I am a age group parent for my daughter's swim team, I have an average of 18 7-8 year old girls. I help a lot of them get their team caps on and the soul cap our definitely help 2 or 3 of my girls.
It's this about being more streamlined in the water for the best time?

This cap provides tons of drag which makes you swim slow in the water. I tried this cap and threw it away because to get the tyr long cap because I don’t want to move slow in the water. No one wants to move slow in the Olympics so why would they advocate for this cap?

I have one thing to say. White women with very thick, long hair also have to cut their hair down to fit into the regulation swim caps. There's very little difference here. Everyone who's hair doesn't fit under a regular cap has to cut it off short.

It's not just about length. Black hair needs to be moisturized regularly or it becomes super dry and brittle...especially black women who choose to go natural. I don't think those caps are gonna slow anyone down or speed anyone up. As long as soul cap would be willing to put the USA Olympic logo on the caps, then this really shouldn't be a problem.

@@lapeach5898 I know all this. A regulation cap would fit over shorter hair, thus protecting the moisturizer. These soul caps are no tighter, no more water resistant, they are BIGGER to fit over afros and dreads. Hence the argument of them not following the natural contour of the skull. The argument isn't about the chlorine drying out the hair. Cutting it short would also help with damage from the chemicals. White ppls hair gets damaged from it also. Some turns green. It's a trade swimmers are willing to make for the sport that they love! The majority could care less about their hair. They just want to perform at their very best. The last thing they're worried about is shaving their head!!!

@@brandi_tardy These caps give a disadvantage. They are not for professional use as they produce too much drag. Braiding hair allows them to wear tighter caps and reduce drag.

I have been swimming competitively as a black swimmer for almost my whole life and these caps are clearly not suited for racing. If they suck for racing, then let them. If they can pull off speeds with the cap on, that just proves the point of the Olympics that it’s the best competing for the best. This is the same idiocy that went into banning Serena Williams’ suit, that was designed to prevent blood clots, for dumb reasons like “it’s a distraction”. If it does t enhance one’s performance but is meant to make it easier for the user, then what is the issue?
Since when does racial diversity play into Olympic swimming? ALL the swimmers cut their hair or shave their heads to be more aerodynamic. How many black Olympic swimmers compete with an afro? I want to see a video of someone in a competitive program practice wearing one of these. I saw one guy swimming a little in one and it popped off multiple times becauseit had a largeair bubblein it. Maybe if it was tighter but when you dive in it will put so much pressure on your neck from the water wrenching it back from the shape and the air bubble.
Because it’s supposed to fit more hair, if you don’t have more hair then it’s not useful and is actually counterproductive.

If she dove in the pool as aggressive as even my 8yr old daughter (who swims year round) she wouldn't just be last place. If the cap didn't pop off she'd injure her neck. It would be like diving in a pool with a air filled swim buoy duct taped to your head. It's actually as large as my daughter's swim buoy that she uses when she swims open water. People have lost their common sense and become so ignorant and easily tricked. Swim caps for competitive swimmers aren't there to keep your hair dry. Your hair and cap should be wet to put it on easier. They hurt everyone to put on if everything is dry and sometimes when wet. My daughter screams bloody murder when she has to put them on dry and she keeps her hair short because it benefits her in her sport. And if you're going to be a competitive swimmer you have to be ok with having horrible hair and thinned eyebrows from the constant friction of the chlorinated water. Men have shaving parties to get their back and have to shave their beards before events. Even in track the best of the best has short hair and then 6x more resistance you can't be vane about hair. You can't expect to swim a competitive race without smashing the air out of your hair. Watch the Olympic swimmers, they're trying to get every air pocket out of their cap before the race because even a small wrinkle makes a difference in something that has 600 times more resistance than air. That cap in the picture is to stay pretty and not for a serious race. Someone show me a video of someone in one of those caps just half that size diving under water in a race into streamline in any of the 4 strokes. Still won't work. People get triggered and they don't use their brain or find the fact out. Literally no Science in that add's picture. Hey, what about the Olympic stream lined bicyclist's helmet. Unless smashed down that person couldn't fit her hair into that either. It's a dilemma.
It's up to the athlete to decide what is right for them.

Stop treating black women’s hair like a handicap. My black mother used to wear the regular swim caps to swim all the time in the 80’s. This cap is huge! Do you honestly think you will go anywhere with this huge thing on your head? It will act similar to a parachute and hold you back. Do you honestly believe white peoples hair doesn’t get ruined too from all that chlorine? Do you honestly think this will stay on your head for competitive swimming? Please stop with these ridiculous antics. It’s becoming very immature. Black hair isn’t a handicap and will work just fine if you stop trying to make it be straight. All these extra precautions just to maintain a slayed hair do and risk losing your livelihood has gone way to far.
That's not the cap the swimmer was using. That just one of the caps you can buy from the website. The one she was wearing looked normal, but they still rejected it anyways. And speaking personally, swim caps didn't fit my head because my hair, even when straightened, was too thick, so there's a market for more natural hair-friendly caps.

There a tons of black women walking around with their hair braided under stocking caps so it will fit under a wig. We call these protective styles. But some how you have an issue wearing this protective style in competitive sports when you wear them daily just to look cute? Please stop with this victim narrative. It’s sad. Furthermore in most competitions you can’t just go around wearing random items as there are sponsorships and agreements involved. If they have a contract saying all the swimmers have to wear the same cap then that’s what they have to do. This is a non issue.
@@thekendyshow522 Honestly, I don't know the entire story. I'm just bringing up my viewpoint as someone who saw the cap and has had issues with trying to find one that fit for me. Soul Cap was sponsoring her, and the cap didn't look like it was breaking guidelines to me, but I'll admit that I might have jumped the gun on this. It reminded me of when they wouldn't let Serena wear a bodysuit to play tennis in despite it not giving her a special advantage.
Swim caps are unpleasant in general for everyone but I do feel that this is an equity issue because natural hair requires treatment that society does not consider the "default". I am sure current regulation swim caps could be improved a lot with better materials and better designs and they should offer more options for folks with long, fluffy, curly, fragile or dry hair. Pool chlorine is very harsh so everyone, who wants to, should be able to wear a swim cap to protect their hair.

Whatever swimmer that is upset she cant wear this swim cap shes sponsoring or whatever, thats her own fault. She shoulda checked with the committee to see if this particular cap was allowed or not before getting sponsored. And if you want to complain about this to draw attention, that just means you probably arent a very good swimmer to begin with, because youll use this as an excuse as to why you lost.
