- A video about Berdly that aims to explain why he acts the way he does based on information about his past and motives. In this video I cover his appearances throughout Chapter 2, particularly the scene where he confesses that he is not smart, and his relationship with other characters particularly Noelle, Susie and Kris.

I want to add, while Berdly's character development doesn't happen on Snowgrave, it definetly lifts it up.
When we meet Berdly after getting the thorn ring, Berdly immediatley notices something is wrong with Noelle, after getting these suspicions confirmed, Berdly drops the stupid smart kid facade and helps Noelle, and I don't mean the damsell in distress Noelle Berdly made up in his mind, Berdly wants to help his friend whom, as he understands, is in danger.
I think this shows that he genuenly cares for Noelle and that, while he may be a cocky asshole, he's always been a good person deep inside.
Yeah he's always cared for Noelle for sure. He thought Queen's plan would be in Noelle's interest, and Queen thought it would be in everyone's interest until she realised otherwise at the very end lol.
i also noticed when fighting us in snowgrave ge has no cocky smile he is generally concerned
Let's be honest, without Berdly in the story we wouldn't have got that many funny moments and iconic ones in chapter 2

Exactly
berdly haters just dont make sense. how can you hate a character when he's this funny

I think since I’m a bit older now (at least old enough to think 13-16 is very very verY young) I always think the hate young “annoying” characters get goes way too far. Berdly is an insecure, stupid kid, a kid that craves attention from a lack of it from the people who raise and take care of him. Plus! Berdly, IMPROVES over his arc. Berdly learns and improves while still being a kid! It’s not like he’s 40 and still acting like this, it’s not like he’s 40 and stuck in this mindset.
Truthfully, I get why some people don’t like Berdly. But, for me, instead of wanting to punt him into the sun when I see him, I’d rather just give him a pat and tell him he’s doing a good job. Kids who act out in this way specifically just need someone to care about them enough to step up and be someone in their lives. Which is I guess why I can’t hate him as much as the rest of this fandom seems to djdbsjd
Yeah a lot of people in that age is still immature, and a lot of them change later. I think a lot of us at that age made stupid stuff or made mistakes about people and how we should treat them. I am like you older enough to see in retrospective, at that age I was not like Berdly but I did mistakes to people or stuff that I learned later…. You understand that for some people their teen years are a time where they need to mature and grow more than others at that same age and that is fine. Not all of us had the same environment or emotional support.
I love Berdly so much, his personality and 'pro-gamerness' is actually pretty endearing
I think that Berdly isn't COMPLETELY stupid, honestly. He gets good grades, he learns, he tries. He's not naturally smart like Noelle, but he has LEARNED.
Agreed, I believe that during puzzle scene he was just overwhelmed with anxiety and need to portray the image of "cool smart gamer guy".
I believe that his belief that Noelle has crush on him is actually rooted in his own need for Noelle (he is projecting his feelings on Noelle), likewise with Queen (who he objectifies as "gamer girl of his dreams"). As narcissist Berdly objectifies and puts on pedestal people he sees useful or worthy of his time (though it doesn't work with Queen since she's a "bigger fish" and unlike Noelle has strong personal boundaries). I guess his care for Noelle shows that he is still a person under narcissistic guise and can care and feel empathy, at least some of it
3:48 I’m pretty sure he’s never had a crush on Noelle. He thinks Noelle has a crush on him and doesn’t want to hurt her feeling. That’s what he told her when he confessed his feelings Susie at least.
yeah wtf i was so confused
Great video, I never hated berdly, and I loved him in chapter 2 because I relate to him slot (except I completely crush my self esteem instead of inflating it), so I was very confused as to why most of the fandom hates him since "he is just annoying" as queen said
Yeah there are two sides of the coin and Berdly chose to act in the way that he did. I think a lot of people relate to his issues like you have too.
It's okay if people hate him, I can see why. Like all writers Toby creates his characters for many reasons but one of them is to elicit various emotional reactions from people, which were all entitled to feeling. What's important is how you go about expressing those emotions lol. Glad that you enjoyed it!
I actually have a friend who has the same exact personality with berdly. And almost everyone (not me im also a nerd) hates him. When i talked about berdly with my friends they agreed about its just like our classmate.
I’m glad some other people agree. I loved Berdly since his reveal in the dark world in Chapter 2
I had the same experience, I never hated him in chapter 2, even if in chapter 1 I disliked him. For me he sometimes was annoying and he was not good to Noelle at the beginning, but at the end you understand he does this because he is deeply insecure. It doesn’t excuse his attitudes, I hope that after this he changes. He need to respect more Noelle, Kris and Susie; but I feel he is going in the right path and his arc is complete in pacifist. He is not bad inside, he is very redeemable and can still learn a lot of how to treat others. And after seeing how he tries to protect Noelle in Snowgrave I defend him more, he really cares about Noelle even if he sometimes doesn’t express it the way he should.
Looking at this from Berdly's view, not only is he entirely outside of whatever troubles and trauma Noelle was in, but also he was much younger, and thus may be less aware that something is wrong with Noelle when she broke down, nor was he considerate.
And while it may make Berdly popular with the cost of Noelle... Berdly still hasn't won at the end of the day, always pressured in a fake it to make it mood to be relevant in the way he knows it.
Until he inevitably takes off the mask.
After so, Berdly seems to genuinely want to help people... In fact, Berdly always have a heart to provide others. He saved the Fun Gang after they fell from Giga Queen in the Normal Route, and genuinely feels worry for Noelle to the point of wanting to save her in the Weird Route.
I always loved Berdly because his goofy face and over the top way of talking is way too funny
i feel like its also important to mention how overwhelmed berdly was when he won the spelling bee for the first time, meaning he probably hasnt had much praise in his life, leading me to believe he might not have the best home life, possibly being neglected by his parents until that spelling bee. which means he would've grew up with the idea that love is conditional
There's a theme going on in the game where all of the main character's personalities as a whole is rooted in them having a terrible home life; Susie being homeless probably, Noelle & her mother's relationship... damn I might be onto nothing
I really appreciate Berdley as a character.
I always liked the twist that he didn't have a crush on Noelle, and thought it was the other way around. That moment and others show that after Berdley got over his insecurity, his main flaw is his comical inability to read the room.
You know what I thought about?
Berdly has low self-esteem while having a seemingly high ego, is very much implied to be severely emotionally neglected, still cares about people but tells himself that others won't do the same, and showers those who do show that they care with affection because he's worried about them leaving.
This bird is quite literally the most accurate depiction of NPD in any media I have ever seen. I don't think it was supposed to be intentional, but man, does it feel good to have a character with the disorder not be a shit person and to actually be a protagonist for once.
I personally feel like Berdly is underated and kinda gets false flak for a lot of his actions
Berdly constantly shows his intelligence in the game by saying big words, showing how the spelling bee is the only reason he is this viewed and it could be the only real subject he is good at.
He constantly studies with Noelle which also probably gives him such little time to actually socialize. This could be why his way of being friends with people is through games. This ultimately made him be very manipulated by Queen. The player might see that Berdly only followed Queen because she played video games. However, is more of what you said plus the fact that she manipulated him by having something in common with Berdly which just so happens to be his only way of being friends with other people. Queen has access to history so it’s entirely possible that she knew this and did it on purpose.
Berdly also gets some flak for being a “nice guy” with Susie and sidelining Noelle and he confesses his love for Susie.
Susie has basically done a lot of things for Berdly on a personal level, accepting him, not acting like he is dumb, etc. He just ultimately falls for her because she has something he is able to connect easily. Remember he doesn’t have good social skills so something he already bonds with people on being a trait of someone else has gotta be his saving grace. When he “ignores” Noelle’s responses to his confession, is just Noelle being shy to talk, which she often does.
Also going to how he treats Noelle early in the game, an example being him refusing to let Noelle read, isn’t him just being selfish. He doesn’t want Noelle to mess up again and embarrass himself. Again, the only reason he isn’t realizing this is how low of a social life he truly has.
This seems very interesting, and i can agree
The sad part of Snowgrave id that it's literally everyone's worst fears coming true: Noelle is being controlled by someone she considers close to her to do something horrible, Kris loses their autonomy and is forced to lead Noelle into murder, and it seems that Berdly may have been hidden in the library's closet. His body will lay in there, forgotten by the world as he slowly rots.
berdly the canon teenager = awkward teenager that has poor social skills
berdly the fanon = OOF.
Remember, fanon doesn't equal canon! Don't trust what you see on fanarts, especially on R _ 34.

"Kris is the only known character to create dark fountains"
You forgot the end of Chapter 2 where BIRDLY HIMSLEF almost made a dark fountaine before Ralsie stopped him
sorry boss my b wont happen again
Hey, father Alvin might've made the fountains to the first 2 chapters
"too naive" literally you showed us that he actually acknowledges that he is being manipulated
Later on yes, but not at the time i said that in the video (or he hadn't come to terms with that reality).
@@DeepFriedVegan when kris and berdly talk you see him for brief moments knowing he is being manipluated.
Nah man. Berdly’s been my favorite character ever since his first appearance. I always felt like he was the playful, snarky, and funny type who stupid jabs were never actually out of hate or disdain. Chapter 2 proved how much he actually cared even if he’s pretty vain. I just don’t understand how anyone could dislike him. Too be fair, It’s pretty hard to annoy me.
He may be annoying but without him we wouldn’t have Smart Race, an extremely relatable backstory, and of course
I thought you were a gamer
Berdly I only play mobile games
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Above every single character from chapter 2, I really want Berdly to become a mainstay. He NEEDS friends like Susie who are willing to check his ego, and he's proven himself useful in the dark world before. He developed ALOT in the dark world over chapter 2 but the ending where he believes it was all a dream shows he's got a long road to go, and I hope that through Noelle (probably) becoming a mainstay of the group berdly can come to trust and love kris and susie as friends, and learn to chill out and become his true gamer self. He has alot of potential outside of chapter 2, at least to me he does.
I think he will become an ally on the side but not be involved too much, kind of like Lancer throughout chapter 2. The future chapters will need to pave the way for the introduction and development of other characters.
I hope that even if he can’t be an ally again, I’d still be happy if he’s a future antagonist in the weird route, maybe with friends if he starts acted more serious, and I just need my bird boy to live :)
He either loves NFTs or fucking DESPISE NFTs, there is no inbetween
Man i find berdly quite impressive hes an video game fanatic but still manage to keep an A+ up
I know that i truly loathed berdly because he reminded me quite strongly of abuse i experienced at the hands of my older sibling, so while I did have sympathy for the awful ways he must've been treated to make him believe his behavior was justified, i personally struggled to see him in a positive light. that said, when i saw what happened in Snowgrave, i felt bad, yes, but the narrative did a damn good job of making him a forgettable little bluebird, because i felt bad for what we did to noelle, and how berdly's death was going to be extremely noticeable due to how boisterous/loud he is.
Yeah the snowgrave route really did a 180 on how were meant to perceive Berdly (the narrative like you said), which i think is just really cool writing from Toby.
@@DeepFriedVegan Very good writing; it takes a good storyteller to make you feel any which way about Berdly, and with regards to the pacifist route, Toby made some truly inventive twists and turns in how Berdly's character was developed. I will say that his kinship/familiarity with Kris is... I can't tell if it's one sided or not, and I think Toby Fox wants to keep it that way.
3:53 No he does not. He literally explains that he thought Noelle had a crush on him (likely because he thought she only studied with him because she liked him, and because there would be no other reason for her to hangout or care about him). He goes on to say that he only reciprocated those feelings because he wanted to be kind, but that he does not actually like her.
4:20 Erm, yeah, but not Authoritarian though. More like a Smartarian (respects smart people).
5:18 No, I think he’d believe Noelle could do it too, but for how minor this is I’ll drop it.
Berdly is one of my favorite Deltarune characters! Thank you for doing a deep dive into his character, this is really good!
Thank you, I'm so glad you think so!

Even though he is a little flawed gamer blue bird i never hold any grudge against him after ch 2, he had his character development and learned his ways enough, he is an actual annoying person, but he is written from a realistic perspective.
I don't think I've ever seen this convincing of an argument in favor of Berdly. I was part of the camp that doesn't like Berdly, but I think this video won me over.
Was there a specific point in the video that really stood out to you?
@DeepFriedVegan The deeper analysis gave me a perspective on Berdly I hadn't considered. I wrote him off as someone who just... was stupid. This shed more light onto his character. Thank you for the video.

The truth is that he’s the most based character in gaming
My theory is that Berdly is being emotionally neglected by his parents. They only support him financially. This has starved him of love and has caused him to be desperate for it from anyone, especially authority figures like Queen.
Random chapter idea. Not really related to the video but sue me. What if for the day kris and Susie are supposed to present their project, kris just drops the ball of junk on the ground and creates another fountain?

Least based Berdly chad (very based)
Twitter has no lore
I'll be honest I don't think I can get over Berdly interrupting Noelle at the beginning of Chapter 1. He knew EXACTLY how to make sure Noelle didn't get to speak her true feelings and with Chapter 2 expanding on their relationship it makes it feel suuuuuper sinister as he's been probably been doing stuff like that for years. For me it's gonna take a bit more than "haha yes we can all be stupid together" to get me to think of him in a brighter light than "annoying ass". He doesn't deserve death, but I don't think he's earned much if any respect from the rest of the cast yet.
I mentioned more than the "we can all be stupid together" point tho. Berdly really helped the other lightners stop Queen and he told Noelle his true feelings during the Ferris Wheel scene which Noelle was able to respond authentically to. Berdly was rude, he got humiliated hard. Punishment sorted.
Berdly insisting on Kris not getting into their group hardly makes me change my mind about his character development, it checks out with his insecurity of people knowing he's an idiot and his rivalry with Kris.
He showed very clearly that he cares about Noelle and does most of the things he does out of ignorance and his lack of self-awareness.
Dang, he just like me 🙁🙁🙁
