Shocked to hear him say they used an AT2020. I had a client that bought one back in 2010 and couldn't believe how strident and just lack luster it was. Maybe they've improved the design but I was shocked as I've used LOTS of ATs, starting with an AT4033 that we bought from Sarah McLachlan, through AT4050s and 4051b's on piano. Liked them all but the 2020 which I thought was pretty poor. I guess Billie could sing through a MXL and still sound good.

She’s mostly a whisper singer. When you’re comparing a cheap mic to a more high end one, the difference is usually in the mid tones which you never hear from her.

Besides that, I think many people forget or don’t want to acknowledge that quiet singing in tune is in fact very hard and at times harder than mid range belting. What Was I Made For is a perfect example for that, as the way she sings requires really much control

True. But that's not why it's used. The 7b needs a TON of gain so it carries some of the heavy lifting for the preamp so it does reduce noise. Not the self noise of the 7b though, you're right about that

He didn't actually say it was "overrated". He just said he didn't like the noise floor on the mic. - It's a valid point. It's not a "great" mic. But neither is the AT2020. In the end, it depends on who & what you're recording. Particularly when it comes to styles of music. Michael Jackson famously used an SM7b., though it doesn't mean it will work for every vocalist. But sometimes a $10,000 Neumann doesn't give you what you want either.
