    The plot armor "Champions are not going to die" problem that you mention towards the end is why I think that the show might actually be better if you know nothing about League. I sure as hell didn't, and I enjoyed it a lot.

    • @stunseedbackwards1947

      The only character that I know who really had a plot armor in this show is Sevika like she had almost 3 near death situation, first when she pushed Silco away from the blast, second when Cait shoots her (which I think Cait just wants to subdue her) and last when her last fight with Vi, and at the end she's still there having a cigar.

    • @Stolanis
      @Stolanis 2 года назад +135

      @@stunseedbackwards1947 That isn't plot armour, that's just her surviving due to being lucky / her enemies not wanting to kill her. Plot armour is when a character absolutely *cannot* die because if they did it would ruin the show. Sevika, as cool as she is, is not integral to the overall plot in the same way that all the champion characters are; she could have died in that first explosion and they coulda replaced her with someone else, it wouldn't have absolutely broken the story like, say, Vi or Jinx dying would have.
      That being said I really hope they're keeping Sevika alive for a reason, i.e. she has an important part to play in S2. I really enjoy her ongoing grudge matches with Vi.

    • @iCloxx
      @iCloxx 2 года назад +29

      it's also something inherent to a video game adaptation. the only way around this would be to not have the champions be in the show or for it to not be canon. both solutions would make the show worse imo. It's not really something one can criticize the show for, only the format of a video game adaptation.

    I didn't take Jinx's traumatic episodes to be flashbacks for the audience's sake, I took them to be literal representations of what she's currently seeing in the moment. Not the writers talking down to you, but the writers opening up the window on the character to let you see inside.

      It's important to know that she cares. She isn't actually a psychopath. My _only_ quibble is that she couldn't see Mylo and Claggor dying. Maybe their bodies in the rubble or something would have been better. Burn rate? What burn rate? The show had a budget and wasn'tjust gifted to us by the Gods of Taruma so they could taste or tears??? But anyway the existence of the flashback itself is totally solid and I'd only _very mildly_ critique the footage used.

      agree, that was quite a stupid comment from him. like we are shown her mental state ( which is still that of a 9-10 years old child ) we are shown that she constantly lives in those emotions and this trauma, there is 0% chance that the authors done it to remind us

    • @abstraktfilms
      @abstraktfilms Год назад +11

      exactly. If Jinx had completely moved on from it, it wouldn't be there. Everything these writers put on the page has a purpose. The line "nothing really dies" or "no one really dies" or whatever she says near the end just goes to show how much her dead friends/family still haunt her from her POV.

    • @Kevin-jb2pv
      @Kevin-jb2pv 8 месяцев назад +2

      It's also important to remember that we can binge the whole season at once, now, but for many other people who watched the show as it went out it would be reasonable to assume that they may not have seen those episodes, in which a lot of shit happens, for over a week. This means that to someone watching this as they aired, they may not have felt like this was an intrusive flashback at all. I watched the show in one sitting and I never felt like those flashbacks were intrusive or condescending to the audience at all because they were very brief and also had the added distortions and scribbles to communicate the emotions that Jynx associates with these memories. It tells us a lot about how her feelings toward Vi are conflicted and extreme; both negatively and positively.

    I deeply disagree that the cliffhanger ending is bad. It ends at the precisely correct moment - The council votes for peace, and Jinx ruins everything (again) with her missile. The council (the real villain of Arcane) are finally made to see reason with the combination of the threat of Silco and the empathy of Jayce, but the Undercity (represented by Jinx) is just fed up and flips the table. This wraps ups the arc of the season perfectly.
    You don't need to see who lives or dies inside the chamber, because you know the most important casualty - peace. The rest is details.

    A point towards your view on Champions' plot armor: I don't play League. So to me, the fact that they killed off multiple characters that seemed important in the first act gave me the impression that they would kill any character without much thought. Vi and Jinx I knew were safe, but to me, I never felt the plot armor was particularly egregious.

      Have to agree, when they spent 3 episodes building up the characters if Milo, Klagger and Vander I really didn't think they'd just kill the lot of them all at once, I expected maybe Vander would die sure but the other kids dying was completely unexpected considering the direction and tone the show looked to be aiming towards up until then, it really made me feel like no character was safe because I genuinely knew nothing about League at the time. I was in such shock that Milo and Klagger both died so unceremoniously, no time for last words or any heroics, just Powder causing them to immediately die when they were so close to getting out the the situation relatively unharmed, it really makes you think about what could have been.

    • @ReaderViaNil
      @ReaderViaNil 2 года назад +35

      @@jamon8139 i see what you did there. But also, Grayson dying sets the tone very early. Up to that point there had been no significant deaths other than backstory characters. You can see that a lot of people immediately fear for Vander when he gets hit just a moment after. He turns out fine, but it sets a scary precedent that we think will not be repeated when Vi starts taking out people with her cool metal gloves. And then the episode ends, and you don't know what to believe anymore.

      Whether Jayce will be corrupted.
      Whether Jinx and Vi will reunite.

    I don't quite agree on the part of the flashbacks in regards to jinx. To me it seemed more like they were trying to drive home that these specific events are still deeply traumatic to her. And as such helps distinguish between being thoroughly broken and just extremely traumatised. As that is what Jinx is at least up till the end of act 3. Deeply traumatised rather than just insane like she comes off with her league counterpart. Highlighting that she isn't a Harley Quinn clone.
    I believe this is the purpose those flashbacks served, rather than to remind us of what happened. Because I agree with you that having flashbacks of what happened last week, or just 2 episodes ago is not even remotely neccesary, especially with how memorable that episode 3 ending part is. That'd be some Dragon Ball tier flashbacks.

      I veged out to league for so many years. A casual noob cannot possibly like this series more than me. But I never thought of that perspective. That is interesting, kinda wish I could have the same perspective only for a moment. But I still enjoy the fact that I end up loving jynx and heimer way much more than I did. Its like the love I had for these characters is outrageous with the knowledge and fun i had in the game, and then learning even more about them and seeing how awesome they are in the series as well. Just draws in so much depth to the characters that people who dont play the game cant understand. Not to mention all the thousands of little easter eggs you find in the series that tie to the game. Like the fact that we know how incredibly awesome warwick is in the game, and knowing that vander is going to be turned into a murderous evil jungler warewolf monster that gets enraged and does more dmg and kills faster ect, who ganks and scares the entire enemy team of a gank always possibly lurking in the shadows. I cant wait until they write this feeling of always being conciously terrified of warwick is going to be put into the series somehow. This is a feeling only an experienced gamer going up against a warwick many times really knows. And I guarantee they will write that feeling into the series. and it will be glorious for the gamers to actually see it in animated glory. Like there are things that the gamers understand and feel that someone who doesnt have years playing cant understand. And the writers of the series clearly have taken ideas directly from the game, like the writers obviously have some greast level of understanding and emotional ties to these characters through a lot of time either playing or developing the game, lore and characters. There are things you catch and can feel in the series that you cant really explaine if you havent played the game for a long time. It also made the moment jynx and caitlyn meet, and essentially square off, so much more epic. That part actually made me fight back a tear it was so epic. Because I cant remember which season of the game, but at one point jynx and caityn were the #1 and #2 picks for being bottom ADC, so for a long time while playing LoL in every single high level or high elo match would be a cait vs jynx fighting each other in bot lane, and they literally took that and somehow wrote it naturally into the series and made a very epic scene where the square off. No one would understand this scene better than a few people who played high elo meta during this season and knew about this jynx vs cait meta. It also reminds me of the final scene in ff7 the original where cloud faces off with sephiroth and it keeps flashing from cloud to sephiroth. so epic.

    I have to disagree about the point concerning Jinx’s flashbacks, because I think it’s a narrative device to further illustrate that she’s stuck in that moment forever. She cannot move past what happened to her, so she lives in this infantile state. In my opinion, I think it sets up for Jinx vs. Ekko to show that while she lives in the past, he learned from it. One of my favorite moments with Mel comes when she's doing the art piece. She's a bit miffed that Jayce left her to wake up alone (understandable) right up until he tells her that he left because Viktor is dying. And almost immediately, Mel's mood shifts, because she realizes just *how big a deal it is* that Viktor is dying. And Jayce tells her he came to her because "nothing feels impossible when I'm with you" which is just... such a sweet little moment. Relationship drama is *there*, it *exists*, but you also get the sense that these two genuinely like and understand each other, and the drama lasts only long enough to clear the issue up.

      Yeah like HOW do you avoid having a rich character not wanting to be rich in a story about duality including rich vs poor? HOW do you write an evil (or just bad or whatever, I'm not here to discuss how Arcane makes morally ambiguous characters) character without making it mysterious, manipulative etc. etc.? I could go on, but pretty much anything has been done at least partly before.
      As you just said, what matters is HOW you DO write the rich character who doesn't want to be rich or the typical evil character and still do it WELL. Arcane mastered it. The most obvious example is Jinx. Never in my life have I thought I would ever be able to enjoy watching the manic pixie (dream?) girl character yet here I am.
      The whole thing about Arcane is the way it does INCREDIBLY well so many overused tropes without making them feel tiring. You can criticize many shows for being too generic with their stories or characters, but not Arcane.

      It was never a good reason. "Generic", "tropes" and other devices are not lazy writing, they are the vocabulary of story telling which is based on us the audience being able to tell the story in our heads as it is unfolding, in good story telling down to the dialogue. It is as you say the execution when we notice it and find it bad because the story telling does not work. We then find it generic because what we see is not able to suspend our disbelief and convince us that is how the story should go.
      In inverse pretty much all suspensions or "surprises" in stories are based on misdirections or red herrings. They actually do not change the generic nature or if they do turn out bad. E.g. Lost and JJ Abrams' mystery box crap.

He constantly preaches about progress but never considers that Piltover's progress comes at the cost of the Zaunites. It's very telling how little he know about Zaun when he questions Ekko about his hover board, saying the blade could be configured better and Ekko has to tell him the blades are configured to work better in Zaun's thicker atmosphere. That's something Donger would have known if he knew about the struggles of living below Piltover. Nothing was going to get done under his leadership and, while nowhere near a solution, is necessary for *actual* progress to be made.

      I agree. Arcane is full of tropes but they're done so well who gives a shit. Also, you will be hard pressed to not find a story without *any* tropes. Arcane also does an incredible job at subverting tropes like how Caitlyn is presented as the rich girl and in general fiction, the rich girl is always kind of cocky and unsympathetic until life teaches her a lesson and she softens up to other people's struggles, but Caitlyn is kind-hearted and tries to work against her own ignorance from the get go. She *wants* to be educated. Or Vi being your typical brawns problem-solver, but she's also shown to be incredibly street smart and not at all stupid, or Silco who comes across as your typical mastermind villain originally, but is shown to be a very caring and loving father and has a very direct approach to his own leadership style, not expecting his underlings to handle all his dirty work for him which is otherwise typical for this trope.
      Arcane takes its tropes as stepping stones but it never feels confined by them, which is why I think the characters work so well. Which I think again makes me wonder if Arcane is heavily inspired by NGE, as I'm reminded of how Shinji is the subverted version of your shonen hero.

He was hot-headed as a young cop and obviously held nothing but contempt for the underground whereas Grayson was still compassionate (as shown in the courtroom scene where she was advising the council not to push things too far to avoid war) Don't forget that he pulled his gun out on a bunch of fleeing kids.
      He was stuck between a rock and a hard place because he dug himself into that situation. He has a moral compass but the things he chooses to do seem to actively fight against it.

    • @YorkJonhson
      @YorkJonhson 2 года назад +57

      Yeah, it's sad because you can tell that even though young Marcus was a dumb glory hound, he made a mistake that resulted in the death of someone he sincerely respected. Which he immediately regretted and wanted to make up for. He tried to save Vi by keeping her survival a secret, and he tried to carry on Grayson's peace treaty with the Undercity. But by that time the damage was already done. So the closest thing he could do to emulating what Grayson was doing was keep up the ceasefire with the crime lord he inadvertently put into power. And once he realized that people were getting killed either way, his daughter's life was put on the line on top of everything else to keep him compliant.
      Marcus was far from perfect, but I liked his character arc in trying to weigh his personal and moral responsibilities alongside the greater good, but ultimately failing to escape the grave that he had already dug for himself all those years ago.

It shows that he can actually be good with kids, but also isn't afraid to weaponize it. But also it shows that because he too is a father he knows how much that would hurt. Pre time skip we never see him threaten people's kids, in such a way. After he adopts powder we see him threat two people's kids, because now he knows what it's like.

In my view, it's not a problem for the show to use clichés, when they're so well written.

      I actually agreed with the generic point. Also, I have to disagree with you on the cliches point. Just because everything else is so well done doesn't mean you can point out the flaws. Okay, lets start. In my opinion, the show has so many common tropes with the characters. While the character arcs are well executed, the character's personalities sometimes fall flat and are almost surface-level. Jayce is a genuine, copy-paste paragon - he's incredibly predictable and the stereotype of a heroic persona. I'm never really caught off guard by his decisions or responses because I know he's just going to say some general hero line. Vander is the father figure and serves the story as the mentor figure trope to Vi (and like all mentors predictably ends up dying). Even Heimerdinger is a trope. He is characterized as an eccentric, funny little creature science dude, but he doesn't feel original because he reminds me of every other quirky but not-so-secretly wise character in other forms of media. Let's move onto the setting. Zaun and Piltover in the show have very cookie-cutter roles. Like Bricky said, Zaun is the lesser class, Piltover is the higher one. The interactions between the two are interesting, contrasting, and informative, but they aren't surprising or original, really. It isn't a new concept. And like Bricky also said, the whole 'upper/lower class clash' is emphasized heavily, and I personally don't like it either because it just doesn't feel original enough to be worth that much emphasis. And I agree with his point that Caitlyn and Ekko are kind of used as mouthpieces for this emphasis instead of being themselves. Yes, this class shaped them and made them who they are, but sometimes I feel like their personalities are overshadowed a bit by the class debate. There are more examples I can list, like some generic plot twists that are used, but I don't want to go on forever. Now, I like everything else about Arcane. Animation, art, style, ATTENTION TO DETAIL (seriously this show leaves no plot holes. None. It's amazing), and the character arcs are spot on. The only thing lacking are the characters at times and overall originality of the plot. It plays too closely to tropes for me. Maybe I'm being too harsh. I genuinely do want to love it. But because of the generic feel to most of the characters and key plot points, I'm not fully invested in the show as I feel like I should. Sorry for the essay, I've been wanting to say this about Arcane for a while.

    honestly, watching this confirmed my suspicion that not knowing anything about league makes the show better.
    I literally didn't know that Ekko, Viktor, or Heimerdinger were even champions on my first viewing, and I wasn't sure if Vander or Silco were. I knew who Jinx Jayce and Vi were (or at least, that they existed) just through cultural osmosis, and hearing youtubers talk about League in unrelated videos, but I genuinely wasn't sure who was important in the games and who weren't.
    the two points that I sort of disagree with are
    1) I think Ekko being preachy makes perfect sense for his character since he's the youngest out of all of them (iirc, he's either implied or outright stated to be younger than Powder), and I personally assumed he was somewhere in the 13-14 year old range, so for me it made sense that he'd act like a preachy ideological teen because like.... he is. so for me that worked, and felt like a logical part of his character.
    2) I just don't care about the show using tropes, so the "it's generic" thing isn't a problem for me. Star Wars is one of my favorite pieces of media, and George Lucas has openly admitted that he pretty much just used "the heroes journey" in place of an actual script, and WWII footage + Kurosawa films instead of story boards, and I still love it anyways, so Arcane gets a pass from me for using familiar character archetypes, especially with how creatively it transforms them into something new and so expertly crafted in all regards.

      starting new tropes is pretty hard as it is with all sorts of work these days
      music? well, there are limited way to arrange notes behind each other, so unless you somehow make the notes sound differently (like with new instruments), it's going to be hard to make new music (that is also good)
      pictures? maybe some new ways to edit will help you make it look differently, but especially with photography and photoshop existing for years now the possibilities have been expanded on in such an insane way that there's not much left.
      in science at least you have some ideas where things haven't been expanded on.
      tropes are only an issue if used badly.
      (blue) avatar was pocahontas, but instead of a new continent it was about a new planet. there are tons of these stories out there, some of them are actually good.
      starcraft 1 was about living in australia. still people loved that story.
      and now with this one the orgininal characters were tropes. because the idea was that they were simple enough to understand in half a page. ofc they got expanded upon later, when riot started to care more about lore, but initially, they were very simple characters and all you had to understand initially was the general vibe they give off.
      This show has had the issue of working with characters that were intended to be as generic and simple as possible, telling a story of these characters most people knew how it was going to end, all of that with the prospect of people hating it because it's by riot.

      Problem is:
      They did this whole retcon thing years ago, because "IoW hindered (their) creative freedom" and then proceeded to spawn bajillion of alternate universes like Star Guardian and Arcane disregarding both the pre and post-retcon lore anyway.
      So the answer is: nowhere.
      What they'll go from here is nowhere.
      Sure, they'll make the next season of Arcane, but that's not going to anyhow tie in to the canon _(since they made a looooot of stories while making Arcane and Arcane isn't anyhow relevant to any of them, not even to Caitlyn lore she got A WEEK BEFORE ARCANE RELEASED)_ and that's the end. This alternate universe will be concluded and dead for the foreseeable future, most likely forever.
      The truth is that despite getting rid of the "hindrance" of the Institute of War _(which didn't need to be retconned, it could've been destroyed in-lore, but that'd require THINKING)_ they have absolutely no idea what to do with most of the champions and locations.
      For example Syndra is a champion that's been released in the limbo before Riot discontinued IoW lore, but before they officially announced it some 2 years later. She has two stories, one of which is her bio, basically a longer version of the one she got when she was released all those years ago and another story that's 80% not even about her and the two stories contradict each other at several points. That's been 4 years ago. That's everything Syndra got after 6 years since IoW was unofficially axed and everything since she was released.

Much like Ahsoka in Clone wars first season was a trope. It takes more focus to develop their characters. Jinx being Jinx and not developing is the LITERAL POINT of Jinx. She's stuck as a child in a teenager/young adult body. She and Vi are mirrors of one another, in that they are both stuck in time, but for very different reasons, and handle that in two very different ways.
    Also the ending was not a cliffhanger, because the result of the missile isn't who gets killed, but that the missile was even launched in the first place. It doesn't matter if everyone survived it, peace is gone.
    Plot armor is a pretty poor use of the term, here. Everyone gets their ass kicked two ways to Sunday, except Jayce, and this is only if we take the physical damage into account. Psychologically and emotionally, everyone loses here, which is, again, the point of the story. That's hardly plot armor. No one gets the sun here.
    And what does 'generic' really mean here? Every story is 'generic' in that they all need tropes to fill it. It's what you do with them that makes it unique. And Arcane does a very good job of flipping them or subverting them or even piling so many that they catch you by surprise.
    Overall, good critique and video, just left me scratching my head on some of your points.

Heck, many of Shakespeare's most successful plays are adaptations of other playwrights' works. I love Jayce and Viktor. Their friendship is so real. With issues that would stem from them coming from such different backgrounds. I'm really glad that they didn't do the jealous partner thing. Or the screw your partner over thing. Without Viktor Jayce wouldn't have reached the point of being able to accept giving the undercity independence.

    For Ekko, I don't think he was done badly, think about it, he was left alone for years, be built his own resistance and had new friends, friends that fought by his side, that died by his side.
    He has every right to be "heavy handed" and angry at the world. You can tell he's trying his best and it's not always enough.

      He has the right to do it and the right to be it, doesn't change what Bricky said. It's a normal trope that's honestly kinda generic and boring, I think they did Ekko dirty. I would way rather see him as the funny leader that only gets super serious in dire situations, feels like it would fit him more. Now he feels like the rest of bottom-dwellers in arcane, dark and broody mood kill.
      I liked him more when he was fighting Jinx, he had the humorous aura in that moment.

      @@fallingsplat4431 And I will say it again, he's a hormonal teen that had everyone close to him die and he can't do a thing about it!
      I'm not saying that he's not "generic" and I hate to use that word cause it's being thrown around like hot potatoes, I'm saying that circumstances and environment have a great impact on how a person developes. He can't possibly be anything else than what he is now. If he was Cheery, laidback, funny, it would all be a mask that he doesn't want to wear. We also don't really know how he usually is, we only see him when he's around his "enemies" or people he can't completely trust, always on guard cause he can't afford to let it down. He's like that with Vi cause he didn't see her in years, he's like that with Cait cause top side didn't show a single reason for why they should trust them. Jinx is also the reason why a lot of his new friends died, so yeah. It kinda feels that everybody wants to be his enemy :P
      The main thing that I want to say is that the world he's in shaped him into who he is today and even though you wish he was more fun and laiback, he can't be cause of all the loss, betrayal, and burden of leadership.

      @@fallingsplat4431 his playfulness still shows in the way he do his job. Why else his team operate in a hoverboard when as heimerdinger said "there is another safer method of transportation" , why else did firelight made colorful murals as tribute, the back of his "work" coat is full of neon doodles as adornment. It's all a cool things teen would've do and shown perfectly in the time allocated for him in the show. On contrary I don't think I'd take him seriously if he is more jokey than he is now, unless he have more screentime to balance it out

      Yeah i also think it's worth noting that he isn't done his journey. This kid has a huge amount of responsibility on his shoulders, sand he can't afford to mess up. Once he gets his Z-drive, I imagine he will gain a certain amount of playfulness and cocky attitude, being able to play with outcomes. I'm real excited to see ekko mess with time next season

    the thing i tell myself whenever i see characters that are attached to each other even though they have faced no development together (vi, cait) is that death and tragedy usually brings people closer together

      Yeah, I didn't even tackle that one. I was thinking it was similar to how we develop friendships when we work alongside one another.
      Vi also does this Cupcake thing whilst kinda tellin' Cait she doesn't know much and it's so vexing for Cait, I think. That's how people get brought together, those two things XD

    I think the only two relatively big things that Arcane missed or got halfway were Ekko and Jinx, and Vi and Caitlyn. Both need more setup for the payoff to work as they intended, and ironically, it runs into the biggest issue I think this show has (and I think, the only real problem with it).
    It's in a rush to get to the end. An extra episode, or god forbid two, would really allow for many scenes that could have done a lot to further develop characters in the show so the payoffs to their storylines hit harder. Vi and Caitlyn could have received more bonding moments and more time together so their romance is a little less sudden, Ekko and Jinx could have a preexisting, established relationship, at least one Sky and Viktor scene so her death is more impactful and hits harder, more scenes with Jayce's rise to power/ discussions on the end topic of making Zaun independent.
    With each episode being around 40 minutes long, I don't doubt many scenes that could really heighten the experience to be a 10/10 could be added, or perhaps already existing scenes could be changed and extended. Not sure what that would do for the pacing, since it's clear the studio was aiming for a quick pace with lots of action and drama, but I'm sure they would find a way.
