Making a Fordite Ring (Pure Car Paint Ring)

  • In today's video, Patrick Adair designs a ring made entirely out of fordite (also known as corvettite, detroit agate, or just car paint! haha). The end result displays an incredible pattern of the hundreds of layers it takes to make each ring. He also made variants of this ring that are supported by carbon fiber and titanium, they are available on the website.

Yo should cut it horizontally to enhance the pattern

It would break so much easier that way, where the layers connect is the weak spot, anyway It would still be cool to see it.

Video suggestion: it would be cool to see a ring with thermochromic properties, like when you wear it the inside of the ring changes color from your body heat. I know there are some thermochromic pigments on the market that change color at around 30 C (just below body temp.). Would be cool to see a video on making a ring with thermochromic properties.

The ring is nice, it’s like more colorful mokume gane. If you still have enough fordite, i would suggest cutting the ring blanks perpendicular to the layers, or at an angle to the layers. I think that will let you capture the more swirly patterns on the surface of the block.

Hmm.... Thanks for sharing this video. - Heidi

Cool stuff, I had always thought that was called Detroit agate. If you could cut your blanks at an angle to the layers you might get a cool wood grain type pattern on the outside. Easier said than done though I am sure though.

Back in the 70s I worked during college summers at a GM Plant. One year our job was to peel all the overspray layers from the paint tunnels. it was gruesome work. We were dumping fordite(GMite?) by the wheel barrel loads. Later an old timer showed me a pendant he made with it. So they used it then. I wish I had saved all that fordite we threw away.
