This turned out amazing. I am so envious of how effortlessly so many of you professional modelers can use oils. I struggle to get them to do what I want and have all but given up on using them for now until I acquire more skill. Thanks for sharing your hard work and insight on the kit.
The only way to aquire a certain skill set is to practice. Not gonna happen watching videos or reading articles. What you learn here you should put into practice
A really nice build, with many techniques I may need to try, your explanations of the techniques also makes them appear to be not as difficult as they appear. Cheers.👍👍👍
Excellent build. I like the use of the water color pencils on your tutorial video. The idea you can remove the color if it looks over done is a benefit. Thanks for another great build and simple instructions for the builder. Cheers.
That is a very nice Corsair that you made. Sometimes a gull-wing model can give you fits on the landing gear if the engineering isn't just right. Very well done, sir!
What a beautiful finish! Thank you for sharing your work. I am building the same kit and getting ready to paint. Your video will be very helpful. Thanks for sharing your techniques, looking forward to more videos from you!
Hi Metodi, the F4-U is a total work of art, your weathering style is exceptional, the F4-U is one of my favourite WWII aircraft, it would gave been interesting to see how they would have done in the ETO along side the likes of the P-51 and P-47, bestvregards from Australia, Les
Excellent! So many modelers will heavily weather an aircraft but then put on a factory fresh canopy and destroy the look they're after. Your Corsair is very well done! Cheers
G'day Metodi, I just had to catch this video as I'm in need of a little more confidence before I get too far into the same kit. You're right about the vague nature of some parts of the instructions but all that is forgotten when pieces finally come together; in my case, sometimes by happy 'accident'. I don't think you've gone overboard with the weathering. Because the F4U is my all-time favourite US WW2 fighter/bomber design I've collected a huge number of reference photographs. Sadly, the RAAF didn't use the Corsair in WW2 but our brothers across the Tasman, in New Zealand did. They too had really graphic fading issues with their paint jobs. I recall reading somewhere that for some reason blues are most prone to the ravages of salt water and 'baking' sunny days. Or, perhaps it was just the chemical make-up of the paints Voight or the USN used. It was a minor miracle that the USN didn't paint them all 'Haze Grey' like they paint everything else in that navy. 😉 I've done about 6 F4Us over the years but I would like this kit to be a special build for me. Magic Factory has come up with a good quality moulding job for a fraction of the cost of a Tamiya kit here in Australia. It's my hope that one day I'll approach a model like this with the same cool, confidence you do. Isn't removing the masking after a big paint job just about one of the best feelings in this hobby - I know it's mine. One is holding an aircraft model looking like it would have for a short time after it rolled out of the factory (one of thousands) all shiny and then you have to 'take it to war' and begin the inevitable weathering and rough use part of the build. Before I get too old to do this any longer, I've planned a 'tribute' build that will try to recreate a shot down Spitfire that took the life of one of the RAAF's top pilots. He was flying one of the older, 'refurbished' Spits that were sent from the UK when it was thought the IJN would be invading us. It's my plan to use a 1/32 kit from the new Kotare company in New Zealand. In my opinion they have made three models of Spitfires which are the best I've ever seen. They also did a great 109 kit but for various reasons I don't do Axis aircraft. It's pretty safe for me to say that Tamiya and Eduard have now met their match which isn't really surprising because the core of the Kotare company were previously the Wingnut Wings folk. Their models are not cheap but without doubt worth every dollar. All I need now is the guts to deliberately smash one of their kits to pieces.😲 I think, Metodi, I'll be 'pestering' you for all the tips you can give me. Cheers mate and all the best. Bill H.
Whenever my wife sees one of my models before the weathering she says "you are going to make it ugly aren't you". You are welcome to give me as much suggestions for useful content as you want :)
Love the job, MF dual corsair box is in my build que, but 1st im building tge Tamiya F4U-1/2 bird cage corsair. Im going for tge -2 night fighter. Next is Tamiya's-1A kit, then a couple of Eduard's F4F-4 wildcats, after that sime Japaness aitcraft. Oh boy. Im going to be busy. Any i really like what your doing with the pencils. Great work.
I may be completely wrong, but I think you have the exhausts upside down - may be why you had fit issues. This is an incredible model, I bet it’s going to look amazing on your shelf!
Awesome build as usual, but I have to say...I've been waiting for the Phantom build for, I think, at least a year....please tell me there is a video of that beauty soon!!
That's quite a solid weathering work! A bit too much for my tastes, however your interpretation is quite right from historical perspective. USMC (this fighter belongs to VMF(N)-532 I think) didn't maintain their planes in parade condition.
I've know about the AK pencils for a long time, but I haven't seen it used so extensively AND effectively as you show here. I usually work at night where I would prefer to have the windows closed and AC on (I live in the tropics). Using water based products for extended work sessions would be very ideal. My questions is, how well do the weathering pencils stay on the model? I'm not sure if you varnished after. Or is it the case that it stays on well enough if you only lightly handle the completed model?
I did not use varnish over the pencils. It can be done but reduces the strength of the effect. Applied over matt surface and once the excess is removed there is pretty much nothing coming off. I rarely handle completed models so havent had any issues.
What a beautiful finish! Thank you for sharing your work. I am building the same kit and getting ready to paint. Your video will be very helpful. Thanks for sharing your techniques, looking forward to more videos from you!
Really nice work mate, especially with the pencils. Overall build is great but its the details that bring it all to life..
Thanks mate, it is always in the details isn't it

That is spectacular! I love the colors of that MRP paint, they appear to be exactly correct.
I love them too 🙂
A really nice build, with many techniques I may need to try, your explanations of the techniques also makes them appear to be not as difficult as they appear. Cheers.👍👍👍
That's the goal, many people are intimidated for no reason so I want to help and push them to at least give those techniques a try
Great result Metodi, the finished kit looks great.
Thanks mate 👍

I like the reversability too. Nothing else has quite the same property.
That is a very nice Corsair that you made. Sometimes a gull-wing model can give you fits on the landing gear if the engineering isn't just right. Very well done, sir!
Thank you, I find that landing gear situation very frustrating when it doesn't go together well.

❤❤❤ go on, we need more videos like this. Awesome work. Tank you for sharing

Thank you for your kind words Les, appreciated
I think since the color pencils cleanup so easily it will give me courage to try things I wouldn't with paints or even oils. Thanks for sharing 😊
Yes, that's an advantage for sure.
Dang man! Absolutely amazing as usual. Now I have even more things to try!
Have fun 👍
Beautiful detail work!! Perfect Corsair!!

Yeah, weathering captures one single point in time so the model is equally authentic looking brand new and battered.
I've know about the AK pencils for a long time, but I haven't seen it used so extensively AND effectively as you show here.
