I have been side saddle putting since 1988 and built my first putter out of plexiglass. It worked great but had no weight. A few years back I bought a reeso/cook vtx putter that did come with weights to adjust toe/heel weight and I have really like it. Unfortunately, the developer of the putter passed away and the family didn't continue on with the company. I would be interested too in your putter as you develop it.
Thanks for the video. I highly recommend you track down a Matzie Charles Owens Slim Jim putter, preferably the "Whopper" model. The Slim Jim was the original long putter and is the perfect design for side saddle putting. The sole is nicely contoured, the shaft goes into the COG, and it has two alignment lines similar to the GP putter. Also, it has wonderful stability and works perfectly with a pendulum stroke. Check it out.
The original Slim Jim has a very thin head. However, when in the vertical position the center of the face aligns perfectly with the COG of the ball. The best part of the original head is the weight and balance. Also, the original shafts from the 80s have much better feel than the current thicker ski poles. The Slim Jim Whopper is very rare but is larger in all dimensions. Both are fantastic. Enjoy and let us know what you think.
Randy, we played against you in the first round of USGA 4-ball in 2019 at Bandon. I’m 5’7-5’8…how long would you recommend a side saddle putter for me?
So going to switch to side saddle putting. I found a couple of really good condition STX putters. They are on the longer size 52". Im 6'4" so would it be better to just try out the 52" for now and cut the shaft if need be. 52" seems pretty long
Have you ever thought about trying the Bomar Putter? It’s a family company based in Post Falls, ID and the president and Vice President of the company are lifelong side saddlers. Billy and Brittany Bomar. I’d really consider at least doing a review and feeling for yourself.
Question for you. Thinking about trying side saddle putting but not ready to make a 200+ dollar investment on a new putter for a technique I may not even like. Since the anchor ban belly putters can be had cheaply. Is this putter stroke possible with a run of the mill belly putter?
@@randyhaag I just ordered a belly something called a shear line spear off eBay. 48" for $30. I will keep you updated when I try it and see if it works.
I've been side saddle putting for almost two years with the pr putter and ive struggled with setting it up and aiming. Ended up going back to conventional putting after a number of four putts on a golf trip. Have you tried out the bomar putter yet? Out of the jaun putt or bobby grace? Thanks for all of your content
Which side saddle putter do you like better the Juan putter or Bomar putters? Bomar makes 2 different models that are both milled putters. They look alot like the STX putters but if Scotty Cameron built them. Thanks!
I actually like both of them, its really a personal preference. I will be developing a side saddle putter in the coming months that might be even better than these, stay tuned!
@@randyhaag Always have enjoyed your videos and as stated before have several of the putters above and have been side saddle putting for about 15 years. Always thought the optimal putter would have a rocker bottom and optimum sizing so the shaft can be upright while getting a solid stroke on the ball. Some of the putter heads are a tad large and when upright give an off center hit. Also in the upright position face angle is a consideration and given green speeds changeable weights would be optimal. Think the stability tour type shafts have also been helpful given the lengths of these putters. Anxiously await what you come with. Started with the STX but the face deteriorated so then started my long journey and a large collection of misfit toys. Thanks
@@Kmax051 Ken you nailed it with your comment. We are working on a prototype that will allow someone to change the weights of the putter depending on the green speeds. Its a work in progress!! Love all my fellow side saddlers!!

Randy, I've been following you for a while and I'm a converted "side saddler." I just have one question -how did you amass your massive collection of trophies over the years and still have time to work. I'd like to semi-retire but I still need income. How was it that over the years you had a job that allowed you to compete so much? Do you have any advice on careers that allow such free time? As usual I'll be eagerly anticipating your next video!!!!!
Ha yes, I've been very fortunate, I have raised capital for exciting early stage companies, primarily using my golf contacts as my investor pool, its been a great career
I think I may have replied already, but I have been very lucky to be in the financial services industry that has allowed me the time to play a lot of golf.

@@randyhaag labgolf.com I've reviewed their traditional putters, but their tec seems like it would make side saddle putting stupid easy. I'm getting into the side saddle putting, just waiting on my first one to get here in the mail.

@@randyhaag thanks been watching all your videos. Im horrendous at putting. Don't have a official handicap but usually shoot mid 80s on my local courses. Really looking to get either this STX or the GP putter on ebay. Could I go with a odyssey 2 ball long broom stick style putter as well?
I'm committed to the side saddle method and I'm looking to upgrade my putter. Is there something unique about side saddle putters vs broomstick putters? They have the same lie angles but I noticed that you seem to be only using putters made specifically for side saddle putting and not any "well known" brands' broomsticks putters. Thanks!
I'm no expert but I gather that it's better to have a face loft of 0 or 1 degree. Traditional putters are usually 3-4 degree loft. Some say higher loft might make the ball go offline when using a straight back and through stroke. I can't say I understand the physics of it.
