Your scene Setup where you’re sitting in your chair talking about it… with the plants and whatnot behind us insaneeeeeee. So sick better than the podcast room even
Great video. I'm right there with you. It's amazing how many podcasts front light everything, that's always blown my mind. The lighting from the far side is infinitely more interesting!
This is exactly what I was looking for! I have a similar small room setup and was searching for the right lighting look but everyone else had massive studios or large rooms to work with. You guys nailed it! Amazing job! Earned a sub!
This is perfect timing as I’ll be shooting some podcasts for the first time in the near future. I’ve been searching like crazy for a video showing a cinematic podcast setups and these lighting techniques are so often overlooked for podcasts but so worth it for the end result! Nice work. Love the name of the podcast by the way. Wish you the best!
Thanks so much for highlighting the part about filming shadow-side! I'm very new to this stuff and keen to start my own podcast, and I noticed while watching other podcasts that I did tend to prefer shots that were filmed shadow-side too, but never knew that was actually a thing. And indeed the look you achieved is so much better than some very successful podcasts out there. I've also been planning on getting 2 honeycomb soft box lights and it's really affirming to see how you use them so well. I just have a question about the lantern light though - I understand you need it as a fill light because otherwise the room looks too dark, but I'm wondering if there are any other ways to do it, because I'm quite light sensitive and typically don't like bright lights right in front of me (even though it's diffused). I'm also worried about the space the lantern light would take up. Thank you in advance!
We needed this video so bad! Thank you so much. ♥️ Could you make a video of how you record your podcast (which camera)? We are currently filming with your mobile phones and need a camera.
That’s great to hear! It’s hard to find people doing podcasts well. Ik because I tried looking all over RUclips and couldn’t find much 😔 Will check out your podcast!
Yes! If you are sitting at a table I would suggest to have a lantern softbox boomed overhead instead of the two softboxes as your subjects will be much closer. Just make sure they lantern is not directly in between them but slightly behind their line of sight
I’m definitely a novice at this and trying to figure this out. My room won’t allow me to get light behind my seating areas . Love the pole idea. I Need a professional 😂
Great video Anthony! I've been looking for some ideas on how to light a podcast my son is doing and this is the kind of look I'm going for. Our podcast will generally have two hosts sitting across a table from two guests. Would you advice just duplicating the exact same lighting setup for the opposite side of the room or do think that would create too much light bleed?
@@zeljkotodorovic8193 it would work, yes. But then you’d have to figure out how to keep the light from spilling all over the background that’s really close to the subject and you’d still have to figure out hairlights now for both your subjects. It would be beneficial for a large group that has a deeper room.
I see lightning mood to be a personal thing when it comes to podcasts but under normal circumstances, in my opinion, I don't feel the lighting should be moody or cinematic, it's a Podcast so it should be well-lit, nothing should be cinematic about youtube video or content creating. it's not going to the cinema like I said people want to explore. thank you for sharing your idea.
While I agree that lighting is a personal preference situation, I’d have to disagree with you on not having podcasts look “cinematic”. There’s a slight misconception here that cinematic means moody. The other misconception is that flat lighting means it’s “well-lit”. The point of the video is to emphasize lighting your subjects in a certain way and shooting on the shadow side. The contrast ratios and amount of shadow you decide to have is up to you and the emotion you’re trying to convey with you podcast. You can have a high key podcast and still shoot shadow side. The only difference is it will be WAY more visually appealing than just lighting everything from the front. I completely understand where you’re coming from though!
@@AnthonyRodriguezz I don't know if this will help with the angle of your light placement they are called " swivel with ball joint" There is one from impact, that has 360 swivel for maximum flexibility. stay blessed
No… I don’t think her reaction was a compliment. “It looks so serious” is code for “this is too dark, I wish it was more bright and fun”. I think you knew it too and covered the moment with a big forced laugh. I do agree that shooting shadow side is the way to make it look cinematic, but sometimes you have to find a way to also make it bright, and make it pop.
🤦🏽♂️😂 Glad you were there and can read the situation so well 👍🏼 She absolutely did not want bright and fun AND my laugh wasn’t forced whatsoever… I actually know her personally and know how she actually communicates. We ended up making the front fill slightly brighter but that was literally the only change she requested and that’s because she wear hats often. I’d try and not take your inhead assumptions as fact. It doesn’t make you look any smarter.
@@AnthonyRodriguezz Sorry for sounding negative. Glad the front fill did the job. I'm actually impressed that you rigged for shadow side lighting, I know that's much harder for a multi cam setup and most people don't bother. Totally worth it.
This is golden! Thanks a lot for this!
Thanks man!

Hahaha thanks!
I’ve had ALOT more time to really dial in my home office setup, so it does make sense that it’d look better 😂

It honestly baffles me
Because I don’t know what I’m doing😂, glad I seen this video. There’s hope
LOVE the final look! What size of soft boxes did they send you vs what would’ve been the ideal size you were looking to use in this setup?
I was supposed to received the mini parabolics. Can’t remember the exact size

what size soft boxes are you using and lantern?

Looks really good bro! You always have really great tips and advice. You earned yourself a new sub and I'll be checking out that podcast as well! 🔥
Thanks brother! The podcast is linked in the description
Awesome video, Anthony Rodriguez. I pressed the thumbs up marker on your segment. Always keep the fantastic work. Eager to see more from you.
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Hi! We’re can get the extension pole? Thanks you!
B&h!
Hey what lens did you use for the 2 person main shot? What was the focal length? Also, what were the dimensions of that room? Do you remember?
35mm I believe and I definitely don’t know the dimensions of the room, sorry
Anthony I’m digging the Vibe!!

Hey, what size softboxes are these? And which ones had you originally ordered?
These were zhiyun octoboxes and I originally was being sent the mini softboxes
Great video bro, can you give me a link for the pole you have
All in the description!
How high is the ceiling?
This is great! How did you light your set up? Mind showing us that too?
Currently in the process of moving but once we settle in and I set up my new office, I do plan on making a video sharing that!
@AnthonyRodriguezz thank you so much
Solid Video man
Thanks brotha!
how about a big 120 lantern above you, instead of these softboxes? it would be way more easier to install and it would still look awesome

@AnthonyRodriguezz I did put my lights above, just like you did, and my setup looks much better and less cluster
Very nice video, dude.
Thanks brother!
VEry Random, but can you share a link to those chairs? haha lol
Haha! Not that random, idk where she got them from unfortunately
wow Just wow

Looks great but i can see why everyone wouldn’t want their setup this dim lit.
Definitely different types of setups!
The point is to shoot shadow side, not to have a moody lighting setup
Maybe it’s her hat but it’s pretty difficult to see her face with this lighting
Good eye! We had to adjust afterward. The hat played a big role though
I’m confused. At no point anywhere in this video did any of the lighting look good. Which part was what you consider “good lighting”?
@@roblewisjr2 😂 there was only one lighting setup and I thought it looked pretty good.
Not sure what you consider good 🤷🏽♂️
