I recently got fitted into a set of Callaway XR Pro irons and have been blown away by the performance of this iron. My shafts are the new KBS Tour V in stiff flex, a mid weight shaft at 110 Grams. I'm 51 yrs. old and a 7 handicap and these irons are by far the longest and most accurate irons i have ever played. I really like what Callaway Golf is doing with technology, very impressive.
I just purchased a set of Mizuno's JPX 825 still have Mizuno MP 32's which I love. Now I have two sets of beautiful clubs to play. My clubs are in excellent condition, they are cleaned after every use. Thank's just me. I would recommend Mizuno's to everyone, they are in my opinion the best clubs on the market.
Thanks for such a comprehensively tested list. I own Taylormade RSi1. I love them. I had a Callaway N415 iron set earlier and traded them for the Taylormade RSi1. I think I made the right decision. I am able to hit the ball better since I started playing with RSi1. Lets see if my handicap improves
Switched from 712 Titleist AP2's to TaylorMade RSI 1's. 4 weeks ago. Great clubs which do everything you said. Very impressed. Important to get custom fitted to get the best out of them.
+thefridge1000 I am still happy but frankly I think the Titleist wedges are better or perhaps this may be as a result of long term familiarity with them. Might also be because I am using different bounces with the Taylor Made ones.
I own those Callaway Apex irons with f3 95g Recoil shafts and must say they made it to the top list for reason. Huuge forgiveness, stylish look, and pretty nice feel despite graphite shafts (I had pains in elbow with steel shafts). The only downside is a soft metal they made of. After just one season they have more dents than my 5 years old Mizunas and I did use head covers.
I would have thought that the Titleist range especially the AP2 would definitely be in the top 3, but that's my opinion. Unfortunately TM has pissed off so many of their present and past buyers by bringing out a new set of equipment every 3 months. Great review nevertheless.
I play G25 irons, checked out the G30 irons and they are very much the same in looks and performance, so don't feel like changing. I was impressed by your review on Taylor made RSi1 irons, may give them a try. Enjoyed the review on top ten irons.
Really surprised the Mizuno MP line didn't make it to the list, but I understand why they're not. They don't offer a full line (high, mid, low handicap) similar to the Calloway Apex, Titleist 714, etc. The MPs are almost strictly low-handicap irons (though I play the MP-57 as a double-digit). I went from Taylormade R7 to the MP-57 and will probably never play another manufacturer's irons. I've very tempted by the 850 Forged right now.
Rick...Great review as always! Demo'd the RSI 1's and was carrying a 7 iron 180-183 yds on my best hits! Have to say I didn't lose many yards on my mishits- maybe 5-6 yards so the clubs do what TM promotes. Currently playing Rocketbladez irons. Will probably change but when the price comes down! Thanks again Rick!
I'd imagine that the new Bridgestone range would have made the list if you could have tried them prior to this vid. Definitely a lot of great looking irons this year.
i just got some AP1 714's and i absolutely love them!!! i think you could have placed them a little higher on your scale, but i havent tried all of the others. I'm a 15 handicap and the AP1's elevated my game immediately! Great videos keep it going!!!
This is great! I've tried almost everything on the list and was trying to decide between JPX850, G30, and the Rsi2. I could go with any of the three....decisions, decisions.
Great to see you've put G30 in the Top 3. I bought some on the back of my Dad being a Ping player and your review. Can't fault them. As you say also the fitting is second to non !!!
Hi Rick! Ive used a set of Callaway apex pro irons for the 2014 season and loved them! But for 2015 I've put the apex mb's in from 7 iron up! Feel the blade gives me a lot flatter ball flight into the green and so much easier to fade!
Bout to buy the Nike vapors SO STOKED!!! Rick has THE best videos on RUclips bar none , I've researched about 20 different irons and 75 videos of Ricks and nikes are right for me , they look amazing THANKS RICK
Well I wouldnt buy any of them, none of them made it to my short list. I bought the Nike Forged VR Pro Combo set last weekend because they were half price (thanks Nike for bringing out the Vapor range and prompting amazing sale prices - how could i turn them down at £350). But sitting at double the price at the top of my list was the Mizuno MP-H5 set which comes from 1-PW and is absolutely gorgeous. Even at £660 for 4-9 irons i was still very tempted especially as I could have chosen a lighter shaft. Still I have been lusting after the combo set all year since I tried them out in a store and I am absolutely delighted with them. My wooden spoon for technology this year goes to Taylormade with their RSI range, as a failures specialist I would never buy anything with holes in teh face of the club; especially as at least one reviewer has shown that if you take the loft of the club into account they have no better performance than Ping with a more traditional build and no holes in the face. If I was a TaylorMade fan I would turn my attention to some of their other excellent clubs like RocketBladez ;-) P.S. And thanks Rick for your great review of the Nike Pro Combos that I watched again before committing my credit card :-)
well I am old and retired, golf is what i do, yeh i would love to go back to work in my old job but thats life, have to find other things, so I play golf, watch videos and play keyboards and anything else that comes my way. Cant think of anything better than golf as i get exercise, meet people and get a bit of excitement - winks
The MP-H5 would be first on my list too, my friend...IF they made them in left-handed. Glaring omission, in my opinion. I have loved my MP-60's for many years now and was so looking forward to the latest and greatest. Now Mizuno is trying to force-feed us lefties the M4. Might have to go off the reservation for new sticks this time...:(
sabr686 oh that is a huge disappointment sabr, you would have thought that as they presented the irons as a complete set from 1 to PW they would have followed that through and provided left hand as well. More important to provide left handed than extra irons i would have thought - sigh
Vici Martynov Thanks for your sentiment, Vici. BTW, I meant to say I was looking forward to the MP-15's. No difference, they don't come in left-handed either. Too expensive to make all the castings and dies and not enough of us lefties, don't you know. Ping, Taylormade and Nike, here I come!
For 2016, as a beginner, I would rather see the top 3 for each range of handicap. No one can go see and test all ten brands, unless you are a full-time golfer. This Top 10 is basically every major brand in the market - so does not narrow it down really at all for me, and I think most people with a handicap over 10 (the vast majority of golfers). Are the differences so marginal you cannot recommend a top 3-5? Are you worried about offending a major brand? If not please limit the selections better and maybe do 3 separate Top 3 videos for high, medium and low handicaps. Thanks for all your work and videos. Beginners mainly care about "forgiviness" while more experience will value other attributes more. We are struggling and want to stay in the game and improve rapidly. Intermediate golfers are polishing their swing. Low handicaps, presumably, are tweaking and will trade many things, like pros, for pure performance. I also would love to see you test Gigagolf's custom clubs. They are a value seller (generic clones) that implements all the same technologies (knock-offs) that are not patented without the added retailer cost, advertising budgets and sponsorships tripling the prices. Custom irons starts at $20 and custom drivers at $99. They have been selling in the U.S. for 15 years now and like in most industries offer a Do It Yourself solution online that reduces costs significantly. I suspect they would be happy to provide a full, custom set to your specs for review. Lowers the price of a custom set from $1,500+ to $500.
I've been using the irons AND the drivers that my next door neighbor gave me. My irons are all Hogan's (2-9, SW, PW), and callaway for my drivers, and some old fashioned wood drivers.
I change irons like I change my shirt, but I'm back with the Ping G series again. They are so reliable and will take a BEATING. I'm lucky enough to live in Phoenix so the fitting center is just a 10 minute drive. I've played G2, G10, i15 and G15s. I'll probably try the 30s, but giving up the G15s would feel like losing a limb.

Rick, you should really be looking at the new Bridgestone J15 range. By the looks of them, they are very, very good and should be on your 2015 ahead of 2014 models such as Taylormade TP range and Titleist 714 range.
After watching Ricks review on the Callaway rx pro, I thought for sure they would be in the top 5. I liked them so much they found a nice spot in my bag. Mr. Shiels keep it up, I really enjoy your videos.
This was great, I have been researching "what is considered a complete set of golf clubs?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Aanraaster Particular Authority - (do a search on google )? It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my work buddy got excellent success with it.
Rick, just a suggestion…when you review the Nike vapor range, could you do a comparison afterwards between the Vapor pro combos and old VR pro combos? I'm getting new irons this spring and am not the tallest person out there but still like to work the ball, and as a Nike fan, I would love to see the new vapors out-perform the shorter hitting VR pro combos. Keep up the great reviews in the meantime, you're channel has been a huge help to me over the last year and a half!
Srixon should have topped the list. The fact that Bridgestone isn't on here is mind blowing, their "driving forged" iron should be #2, then the Callaway apex. Everything else you can put in any order you like, there all about the same at this point.
nice collection of info there I did try the new cobra fly-z iron in a stiff shaft and loved the performance and sound off the face, I really like those new srixon 745's too and the callaway XR range are a hard iron to go past also,,,,, personally ;-)
Hi, what about XXIO clubs? I have them since 2 years. I used to play with Callaway for 16 years. XXIO clubs are really wonderful. Shame they're expensive.
Good video, thanks. I wish I was in the market for a set of clubs, lots of good stuff out there. I have to stick with my Rocket Bladez for a few more years before I look into a new set.
I tried the RSi irons and did not like them at all. It feels rock hard comparing to my Mizuno MP63. Seems to be the overall feel for TM irons. I also have a set of 2009 Tour Preferred Irons and they feel similar.
Im looking for new irons, I am thinking about the apex or the rsi. I don't know because I like the look of the apex and I like that there is a little bit less forgiveness so I can improve my game. But the rsi for me is cheaper and it has stronger lofts. Advice will be much appreciated.
I'm a 4 handicap and am getting irons in the spring and am debating between the s55's titleist cb's and taylormade mc's. You should do a three way head to head between them. Mabye even through in the Nike vapour pro and apex pro in there!
+Dylan Davies hey bud im in the same position you are 11 months later!...what did you decide on? i am leaning towards the S55's because i currently have S59's and love the custom fitting options and work ability of those irons.
I play the Adams xtd forged iron. Have you ever done a review on them. I really like them but am considering upgrading. Just wondering if it's worth my while. Thanks for the video's, really enjoy them. Cheers.
It would be hard to pick a list of only 10 clubs. I hit most of the new Irons and ordered the Callaway XR which isn't on the list. The Taylor Made RS1 looked great, was the long and consistent but it launched lower and I didn't like the feel of either stock shafts. It was longer than everything but the BB. The Callaway Big Bertha was the longest, easiest to hit, and most consistent in distance and direction, but I just didn't like the looks and didn't want to let go of the extra money. The XR looks almost identical to the original XHot. Great looking club. With stock steel and graphite shaft it was actually not quite as long as the TM RS1 but with the free shaft upgrade the UST recoil shaft made up the difference. I can't wait to get them.
Well Rick your review of the Nike Forged VR Pro Combo irons was spot on, just returned from the range for their first hit, they are "silly good", I am going to love playing with these - thanks ;-)
Rick, did you have the opportunity to try the Cobra irons when you tested the drivers? The irons I am most excited about are the forged Fly Z + and the Wilson FG Tour V4. Wilson doesn't always get a lot of love but the FG Tour V2 was fantastic so I am really looking forward to the V4.
Rick I live in the U.S. I am 13 and I am hitting my driver with a 210 yard carry is that good? I am not the best at getting it more straight and far. I also need help hitting my irons farther. I have a Taylormade tour burner 9.5 degrees and stiff shaft and I have knock off irons that I hit fairly decent but not far. What should I do or could you post videos about it, I love your videos 👍👍👍👍 keep up the good work
Am just wondering do u take into account the cost as well , personally would not buy tm as they change so much would always be wondering if the new ones would be better ,Corba not on your list ???price and performance cant be beat
Great review as always, Maybe would be helpful to review iron set for people new or looking to take up Golf that don't want to spend well over £550 i.e under £300 or are they just not worth it? Or how to pick a 1/2 set to get them going. Cost of clubs, bag, lessons, clothes, shoes etc etc before thinking about joining fee for a club maybe a factor why Golf is shrinking. I don't know anybody that has given up the game due to pace of play?
Lots of bargains about at this time of year David - I bought these - www.direct-golf.co.uk/golf_irons/nike_golf/vr_forged_pro_combo_irons_4-pw_golf_irons/p16153.aspx - sure there are similar bargains at all ability points, just have to buy last years model.
Buy used and don't get sucked into the latest and greatest. Golfbidder tested every Ping G series iron from G5 to G25 and the difference in yardage was only about 4 yards of carry! You can still get a set of g10s for about $150 USD. They'll be in great shape because those clubs are built to withstand nuclear warfare. Might just need to throw some new grips on.
Well said. Unfortunately the manufacturers are the biggest voice to the people about this game. I have no problem with companies making a buck, but it is a conflict of interest for them to have the main stage for advice or opinion. The clubs are maxed out period and if anyone is paying attention they just flip flop head designs every few years paint it a new color and put a notch in it here or there and a racing stripe and boom, new and improved. There are hundreds of vids on comparison reviews that trackman shows to be pointless. I understand feel and confidence at address and so on, but is it worth spending so much for so little? Hey, if anyone has the money to piss away knock yourself out and go for it. Majority don't and are being lied to about what they are gaining from this and that. I do believe this is killing this great game.
Waiting on a set of custom G25s to come in. I did the research and didn't think the G30s were worth the extra price for me. Work as a photographer is sporadic at best and my disposable income is...well...inconsistent. Regardless, still beyond excited to finally have a set of custom fit irons. My optimal lie angle is too flat for most off-the-rack clubs. I can hit them but I don't like the flight. Plus, I was able to get the lofts weakened which was nice because I hate the 'more aggressive' lofts that seem like nothing more than marketing fodder. "Oh, your 6 iron goes the same distance as my 7? Cool, it should. It's the same loft." :P
I wouldn't touch TM in a million years for irons. Their superseded in no time with another wizzbang version. They also perform no better than equivalent lofted/length irons from other manufacturers. The 6 goes further because guess what, it's actually a 5 iron!!
Well the "chunkier" TaylorMade irons are made for high handicappers and they are stronger in lofts. The TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB and CB are actually not that bad in lofts.
I have a set of TM RSI2 and they are so forgiving and consistent. I had a set of Rocketbladez Tour for about a year and I practiced about 4 times a week at the range hitting about 200 balls and I never had an issue with the polymer inserts wearing out. Yea TM will probably be releasing an newer versions of the RSI's or an entire new line by July but that doesn't mean they're clubs aren't up to par or phenomenal clubs.
hi rick...i just found your site , gutted i missed the comp. one thing i do need is a day long assessment of my game and my bag, good luck to whom ever one this prize, cracking prize... rick would you consider a day of coaching for me...how much £££ cheers and keep up the good work sheas
Rick, I have a set of Rocketbladez and I recently found a set of Speedbladez on sale for $300 or so. If I decide to upgrade, do you think the Speedbladez will outperform my current set? I'm a 15 handicap. Thanks
+XxGamesandModsxX the xr irons aren't that good to be fair but the xr pro irons are sick I was at a fitting for them yesterday and gained 15 to 17 yards on my irons consistently and I currently have x forged irons. so that being said all of the xr range arnt bad
Now that you got to try out the Nike Vapor Range at what looked like the PGA merchandise show (correct me if I'm wrong) and you got to try them out more in depth, would you put them higher on the list?
Malcolm Herbert I'm a Nike fanboy, and will be first to say those Nike Vapor are terrible. Ugly as sin and don't hit much better. That VR Pro line was great. Covert was so-so. Vapor....terrible. I'm jumping ship to Titleist.
I think the 2 majors, 2 world golf championships, a race to Dubai, and numerous others speak for themselves... He also doesn't use the Vapors, and he didn't have much of a say in the design process. That was mainly Tiger.

Switched from 712 Titleist AP2's to TaylorMade RSI 1's. 4 weeks ago. Great clubs which do everything you said. Very impressed. Important to get custom fitted to get the best out of them.
Still happy with your choice?
+thefridge1000 I am still happy but frankly I think the Titleist wedges are better or perhaps this may be as a result of long term familiarity with them. Might also be because I am using different bounces with the Taylor Made ones.
Great thanks, I am torn between srixon, mizuno and TM rsi 2
I just bought myself the JPX 850s (not the forged). Best club for me that I tried by miles. Can't wait to pick them up
As a very high handicapper the Big Bertha irons have been absolutely game changing!
I am a beginner and found your segment very very helpful Thank you
I have the Vapor Pro Combo. Excellent.
Agree with you, as it's their best clubs ever produced thus far.
Great video! I just picked up the Mizuno JPX 850's and they hit like a dream.
I'd imagine that the new Bridgestone range would have made the list if you could have tried them prior to this vid. Definitely a lot of great looking irons this year.
I love my Taylormade rsi 1!! Just bought the Grand Prix ghost putter and love it as well
The Wilson V4 irons should be in the top 10. What a tremendous iron and quality of Wilson
i just got some AP1 714's and i absolutely love them!!! i think you could have placed them a little higher on your scale, but i havent tried all of the others. I'm a 15 handicap and the AP1's elevated my game immediately! Great videos keep it going!!!
Thanks Rick for all the equipment reviews and content. Very informative!!!!
This is great! I've tried almost everything on the list and was trying to decide between JPX850, G30, and the Rsi2. I could go with any of the three....decisions, decisions.
Srixon irons look AMAZING!
Very classy n discreet irons i'd say.
Debating on pro combo nike vs titleist 714 ap2. What's your take on either. Pros vs cons - thanks
Great to see you've put G30 in the Top 3. I bought some on the back of my Dad being a Ping player and your review. Can't fault them. As you say also the fitting is second to non !!!
I miss Cobra Fly-Z, I love the look of the new clubs.
Hi Rick! Ive used a set of Callaway apex pro irons for the 2014 season and loved them! But for 2015 I've put the apex mb's in from 7 iron up! Feel the blade gives me a lot flatter ball flight into the green and so much easier to fade!
Was just wondering if this video came out before or after you tested the Callaway XR irons. Really want to hear an in depth review on them.

I just got my set of vapor fly pros! so nice to hit!
+Symon Powlison sweet!!! I'm stoked to get em next week!
+Dosy Boy how are they?
+John locke I pick them up today they were getting made to my specs. I'll let you know
+John locke when I tested them to get fitted. it was super solid with a good responsive feel when striking the ball.
Well I wouldnt buy any of them, none of them made it to my short list. Considering I just bought the RSi irons, they're #1 on my list.
RSI1 AND PING G30 are my best candidates. Both companies keep coming out with quality offerings year after year.

missing the cobra fly z range in this list... hope you can make a review soon
Matthias Gold Below-average to average distance, muffled feel... overall it's towards the bottom of most people's lists
This was great, I have been researching "what is considered a complete set of golf clubs?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Aanraaster Particular Authority - (do a search on google )?

Hey Rick, how far down past 10 would you rate the cobra fly z+ irons?
Callaway XR ? You were creaming about them when you tested them !!!
Yes, TaylorMade RSi range - amazing clubs!
nice collection of info there
I did try the new cobra fly-z iron in a stiff shaft and loved the performance and sound off the face, I really like those new srixon 745's too and the callaway XR range are a hard iron to go past also,,,,, personally ;-)
Rick do us a video to show the before and after effect of a custom fitting
I really liked this review you did Rick on the irons keep up the great work you and keep them coming.
It's definitely going to be hard for me to pick between the 714 MB, Srixon 945, and Vapor Pro.
Rick, any chance of a Bridgestone J15 CB iron review?
I would say that after 8 months into 2015, the titleist 714s have proven to be fantastic clubs, and probably sit in the top 3 now.
My Mizuno mp-54 are amazing! Made for a guy who's miss hit is a bit thin. If you hit it thin with these they will still get up in the air!
Well Rick your review of the Nike Forged VR Pro Combo irons was spot on, just returned from the range for their first hit, they are "silly good", I am going to love playing with these - thanks ;-)
Mizuno JPX850 forged , slim look and easy to hit.
Watched your 2015 driver comparison's. I now own new Ping 30 driver after two fitting's.
Added 15 yd's. without loosing control. Love it. Thanks.
For a very high handicap player which would you recommend. Apex, Bertha, G30 or RSI1?
As a fellow high handicaper, I got The Rsi 1 customfitted today. Would recommend you go and get a customfitting to find which suits you best.
what about the Miura 1957 small blade?
Great review as always, Maybe would be helpful to review iron set for people new or looking to take up Golf that don't want to spend well over £550 i.e under £300 or are they just not worth it? Or how to pick a 1/2 set to get them going. Cost of clubs, bag, lessons, clothes, shoes etc etc before thinking about joining fee for a club maybe a factor why Golf is shrinking. I don't know anybody that has given up the game due to pace of play?
Lots of bargains about at this time of year David - I bought these - www.direct-golf.co.uk/golf_irons/nike_golf/vr_forged_pro_combo_irons_4-pw_golf_irons/p16153.aspx
- sure there are similar bargains at all ability points, just have to buy last years model.
Love the Taylormade Speedblade from 2014!!! :D
Opinions needed. Thought about rsi and current Taylor made user but the srixon are cheaper and nicer looking.
I wouldn't touch TM in a million years for irons. Their superseded in no time with another wizzbang version. They also perform no better than equivalent lofted/length irons from other manufacturers. The 6 goes further because guess what, it's actually a 5 iron!!
and I doubt it will be going that far if the polymer insert in the face wears badly and starts to fall out ;-)
Well the "chunkier" TaylorMade irons are made for high handicappers and they are stronger in lofts.
Not understanding the Callaway XR left out.....could you expound?
Interesting picks. Ping G series are my #1 pick to try. No gimmicks or marketing nonsense, just classic Ping goodness.
hi rick...i just found your site , gutted i missed the comp. one thing i do need is a day long assessment of my game and my bag, good luck to whom ever one this prize, cracking prize...
rick would you consider a day of coaching for me...how much £££
cheers and keep up the good work
sheas
What's the least expensive blade Irons on the market right now (2013-current)?
Rick you never mention graphite shafted irons. I use graphite mizuno irons. i am 74 and 20 handicapper I am doing right or would steel shafts be best.
I used graphite shafted Lynx Elegance irons all last year and I loved them. I do prefer lighter shafts :-)
Rick, I have a set of Rocketbladez and I recently found a set of Speedbladez on sale for $300 or so. If I decide to upgrade, do you think the Speedbladez will outperform my current set? I'm a 15 handicap. Thanks
Yeah get the speedblade irons they are more forgiving and go farther. On mishiyts
Did you forget the Bridgestone line or do the not sell them across the pond? They definitely should be on that list.
dakota jones Sorry never tested
Those Srixons for sure!
All Pings have a Hosel....But not a Ferrule...
(Slight misquote there Rick....) ;)
You didn't like the Callaway XR?
I've been catching up on old Rick videos. Bearded Rick is better. #staybearded #beardgang
How are the Callaway XRs not on there?
They suck
Yea they really rant that great srry
Cause they shit irons...lol
lol they have no distance on them at all. I compared the rsi2 and the xr pros, i hit the rsi2 7 iron 10-15 yards farther the the xr
Yes I might just do. Certainly the vapor pro combo
Malcolm Herbert I'm a Nike fanboy, and will be first to say those Nike Vapor are terrible. Ugly as sin and don't hit much better. That VR Pro line was great. Covert was so-so. Vapor....terrible. I'm jumping ship to Titleist.
John Rambo that's certainly how Rory feels minus the going to titleist
Malcolm Herbert Rory coming to Nike ruined their clubs. Rory has bad taste in women and club design.
I think the 2 majors, 2 world golf championships, a race to Dubai, and numerous others speak for themselves... He also doesn't use the Vapors, and he didn't have much of a say in the design process. That was mainly Tiger.
Rick, if this video was made a couple of months later, would you have included the Callaway XR line? If so, where?
You rated the Cobra Fly Z drivers quite high in your top 10. Have you not had a chance to hit the fly z irons or didn't they make your top 10.
Great video
Team Mizuno all the way lol. But those jpx850 fordged I feel are under rated should of been at least second or number one from Taylor mades.
I would have loved to see the Cleveland CG Black CBs on the list
Rick Shiels PGA Where do the Ping i25 irons fit on your list ?
Ugh I came here to look for steam irons. Why are there no steam iron reviews?
how come no mention of the xr range you were so excited by. hmm???
What about the taylormade speed blade irons ??
Lol, we're far away from the Wilson Staff kit i bought 20 yrs ago, which came with a bag for around 200$ :)
Nice !! But y don't u also make a video of your top ten fairway woods too !!?
Rick,
No Cobra love? You seemed to love them when you tested them....
vapor irons and woods are the best
Rick: Is there a reason you left off the Cobra and Honma Irons? I do enjoy your videos!
