The author of the Polar Express book, Chris Van Allsburg, wrote a series of great almost Twilight Zone-esque children's books with semi-dark and borderline haunting tales. Jumanji was another of his stories, and there are plenty of great other ones to read too, never mind the great illustrations. The Polar Express is no different than his others.
Top 5: 1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carey vers.) 2. Elf 3. Polar Express (Nostalgia hit hard w/ this since I read the book as a kid) 4. A Christmas Story 5. It gets hard to choose around no. 5 lol Maybe Klaus on Netflix
When the elves sang at Santa's entrance.... total heart glow, tear filled fabulous energy . This is a delightful movie . So glad you guys did it. Thank you. Totally fabulous 👌
I knew The Oak was going to love this one. I am so glad you all liked it. Our local train company has a Polar Express trip every year, They do everything including the hot chocolate song, ticket punching, then they arrive at ‘the North Pole’ and get gifts from Santa and take pictures. It is a night to remember every year.
I took the hour and a half trip to do that with my 4 kids and was blown away at how amazing it was and how the faces of not just mine but all the kids just lit up. This is a great story/movie that will last the test of time.
One small note on Oak’s message. If your born into family is not good for your (physical, mental, and/or emotional) health, they do not need to be the family that you spend time with. Found family can sometimes be just as good or better than birth family.
his words made me cry so beautiful what he said ❤ and I agree with you on the family thing. Family has to do with the heart and with the love you share for someone❤
When my son was 5, we bought him the Lionel Polar Express train for Christmas. It came with a full size Santa Bell for the tree. He would shake it to hear it ring and we would pretend we couldn't hear it. Pure magic.
I remember being absolutely terrified of this movie as a kid, but it's a beautiful adventure. I've been wishing for everything to turn into a rollercoaster ever since haha
As a kid there was (sort of) a ride for it in my area run by Jordan's Furniture lol It was called the M.O.M. ride. It's basically a big 4D-specific theatre with seats that lifted and moved along with the movie sequence. They also pumped the smell of hot chocolate into the room, had cool gusts of 'wind', and snow fell from the ceiling :)
This is one of the only movies that still makes me cry. There is just something nostalgically beautiful about it. The way they chose to artistically depict some of those concepts, plus the score is just really emotionally charged.
The author of The Polar Express grew up in my home city of Grand Rapids, MI. The Herpolsheimers department store actually existed in downtown GR. I thought it was cool that he included it in the story. It was a part of his childhood memories of Christmas time.
Fun fact: the ghost on the train used to be a kid that would hop on for free since the train never stopped at his house. While he was riding on top he saw flat to tunnel and started running to the front, but got killed by the top of the tunnel. That how he knew the tunnel clearance was only 1 inches and that you had to jump to make it into the coal car without dying. There’s a deleted scene that explain all thing you can find on RUclips. Fun fact 2: when the ticket is flying around and it falls in-front of the train, the polar express seems to come out of nowhere. If you look closely you can see that the light wasn’t working until just before it hit the ticket. That why the engineers had to change the light, and leave the girl to drive the train.
You guys have to check out the behind the scenes of this movie! It’s really amazing how Tom hanks played almost every single character in this through motion capture! It makes this movie that much more meaningful and magical once you see how it was made
"The Polar Express" was a movie adapted from the book of the same name, and is one of the coolest children's books ever put to print. I vividly remember storytime in the library in 1st grade, and how quiet everyone was because the artwork was so mesmerizing. There was a definite air of both darkness and mystery to it, and years later, when it was adapted into a movie and the trailer dropped for it, just...duuuuude ❤ Went to see it with my grandma, and yes, that train sequence on the ice was every bit as awesome on the big screen as you would think! Imho it is one of the best book to movie adaptations of all time. They really captured the _look_ and inexplicable, almost scary vibe that the book had. I know the movie gets crapped on, a bit unfairly I think, for it's early use of imperfect mocap and goofy facial animation. I believe the studio had lost so much money on it due to that fact alone that it had to shut down, which is a shame - with time and practice, I think they would have gotten much better and produced some real art. :/ At 30, this is in my top 3 Favorite Christmas Movies, to this day.❤
Oak, I love your heart. I lost my mom to covid in 2020 and I've been utterly lost since. Recently I was able to relocate in order to be with ppl who truly care about me and I'm forever grateful to them. Thank you for all the positivity that you give in every reaction. Never change who you are, because your heart is beautiful
Sorry to hear that! Thank you and thanks for watching with us. I know you frequently comment, just know we appreciate your time that you give us. Hope you have a fantastic holiday.
loved your reaction guys, loved the laughs and tears. My family and I always get to see this movie every year! P.S Our main character wished to 'always believe' that's why he got to hear the bell later on as an older man.
This movie is based upon Chris Van Allsburg's book. He also did the illustrations in the book, and the movie animation looks very much like the pictures in the book. Van Allsburg is from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and that is why it is mentioned as the hometown of the boy in the movie. Van Allsburg also wrote and illustrated the book Jumanji which has been turned into a movie as well.
Oak is just an incredible human being right? Damn, even after the reaction, he just keeps getting us hhahhahaha The three of you are doing an amazing job, don't ever stop so you could inspire others 🥰🥰
Oh god i feel like tears, this is my childhood movie. I remember watching it at 4/5 years old, the nostalgia hits different. Almost forgot about this movie
One of my favorite christmas movies of all time! I didn't even realize till I was older that Tom Hanks not only played the conductor but the stowaway on the train and Santa as well
My wife is the manager of the deli at a local family store. One of her workers usually walks the couple miles to work because his truck needs fixed, he's also helping to support his wife's parents, and it's just a rough time and he mentioned he wasn't sure what Christmas was going to be like for his 3 kids. So my wife and one of her other workers are surprising him with a couple of small presents for each of his kids. It's not much, think we spent around $20 for each kid, but they'll be super excited. My wife knows he's going to be upset that we did it because he's proud like that but know he's also going to be grateful as well because he wants his kids to be happy.
In all honesty, I was never bothered by the animation, just thought that's how films were, but it has become a Christmas Eve must. I remember watching it with my cousins while my grandma and my aunts prepared dinner and my uncles and grandpa prepared the living room for a small message before dinner.
The way I always saw it: The Conductor = The Ghost of Christmas Past or the innocent belief in Christmas Santa = The Ghost of Christmas Present or the joy of Christmas The Ghost = The Ghost of Christmas Future or Harsh Skepticism A lot of the lines make more sense assuming this like the ghost saint “seeing is believing” and the Conductor saying “you don’t always need to see to believe”. It also explains why Hero boy saw an older version of himself; it’s the version of him that continues to believe. Also why the older version is voiced by Tom Hanks.
This movie is fun as hell. It's beautiful and exciting and has an air of danger and mystery, which are the ingredients of a great adventure. I love it.
I love this movie; remember seeing it with my step-grandfather, and was a real treat. This was one of Robert Zemeckis' many film forays into motion animation before finally going back to live action with the 2012 film, Flight (with a fantastic award nominated performance by Denzel Washington). The technology for motion animation was just coming around strong, so he took to it like wildfire. While it was praised for looking really good at the time, people complained mainly about the characters having soulless looking eyes. (P.S. Tom Hanks voices the conducter, the hobo on top of the train, Santa Clause, and the boy himself as well. (Plus the boy's father.))
There’s at least 4 references to back to the future in this movie, The Loco’s whistle Doc’s line “I’ve wanted to do that all my life!” The Loco has a Flux Capacitor (you can see it when the pin is bouncing around) And when Santa hits 88mph
This movie is very dreamlike for me because I think this is the first movie I've ever remember watching. So it's always such an interesting experience watching it again. AND please watch Coraline guys! If you wanna see a really inredibly unbelieveable animation! Since you watched Nightmare before Christmas, Coraline can be added to the stop motion animation series!
There are plenty of Christmas movies that fill me with nostalgia and can be considered my favorite, but this one has something about it that just makes it my favorite over all of them.
This is my son’s favorite movie and even in the libraries over here in Japan they will always zoom to find the Polar Express book. The train museum we go to also has the book and they will show the movie sometimes during the holidays. I still tear up every time the lead boy hears the bell for the first time 😢
I grew up in the most wonderful Christmas home. My parents made sure Christmas was the best time of year, since I was too young to remember. I still love Christmas, and I still get fireworks in my stomach whenever Christmas comes around. I will bring the spirit down to my kids, when I eventually get them, and make sure they love the Christmas time, as much as I have done my whole life.
The song in the credits always makes me cry because I've loved this movie since it came out. Polar Express isn't for everyone but it has such a special place in my heart so I was super excited to watch your reaction. Hope you all have a great Christmas!
There was nothing better than day before Christmas vacation when I was in 4th grade We had pajama day, ate cookies, drank hot chocolate, and watched the Polar Express. I miss that part of childhood...
I remember when I first saw this, it was OK. But since then, I've had my first kid. Hits different. My desire for kids (and adults) to see the magic of giving and receiving has returned.💌
It’s a tradition in my family to watch this. I was a pre-teen and had a toddler sister at the time and so now we just have to watch it every year on Christmas Eve. The animation never bothered me by the way lol, it never crossed my mind that it was weird. At the time I remember it seems so realistic lol
All week I've been falling asleep and waking up to the guys reacting to a playlist of Harry Potters, now I get to watch them with one of my Daughters favorites, yes!
The animation is definitely different. I just got around to watching this a couple years ago. I was 16 when this came out so I wasn’t really interested back then but I definitely enjoyed it. 💜
This is an unbelievable movie! It has become a Christmas tradition in my family to watch this on Christmas after presents. And every year it still chokes me up when I watch it. This was a great reaction.
This was one of my favorite Christmas books along with The Night Before Christmas. The story is so magical and the illustrations were so unique. I think they did a beautiful job paying homage to that imagery. If you can find an original story book, it would be a great one to read to your young kids.
Something about this movie has stuck with me, I can't exactly put why because I still don't know why. It's one of those movies that has stuck with me and probably will until the end of time. I usually watch on Christmas Eve late at night because that's when it feels the most real, the most gripping, the visuals, the soundtrack is something I can't get over.
This means a lot more to people old enough to remember when the department stores were all downtown and that was where the big display windows were along the main commercial drag. PM 2525 is a real locomotive still working today and Grand Rapids did have those downtown stores.
Rise of the guardians is a Christmas movie I watch every year , it’s such a badass Christmas movie , has Jack Frost , Santa , Easter bunny , sandman , tooth fairy
I'm not sure why, maybe it's because of everything I've seen and experienced in my now 56 years, but I've gotten more sensitive and sentimental. This is one of an untold number of movies, especially Christmas films, that I'll become overwhelmed with emotion at certain points. I still love this movie, even though my boys have rolled their eyes at it for several years now. No, it's not perfect, but you just have to let go of the intricacies and let yourself go with the bigger story. Merry Christmas!
I saw this movie in 3D and it was brilliant! “The Polar Express” is the book that really ignited my love of reading so I was stoked when they made this film. I was in college when this came out and I was happy to go to the theater. 😊
The Know-It-All kid’s voice is familiar because it’s the same voice actor that played Mandark in Dexter’s Laboratory. 😂 He also played the nerd in Grease. This was definitely early mo-cap. I actually enjoyed it . Because it’s early tech, faces couldnt be articulated the way they are currently, but I didnt really notice until years later that it falls into the “uncanny valley” of CGI. I was a senior in hs when I saw this but hadn’t really grown up with the picture book, so it’s not really that nostalgic for me, but overall I thought it was beautiful. I especially loved seeing the rollercoaster scene in theaters on IMAX.
I’ve always loved this movie. When I was little my aunt used to play it every Christmas Eve’s and it really made the day really especial.Till this day I really adore seeing it and remembering how wholesome my Christmas as a child were! Merry Christmas from El Salvador guys🙌🏻🎄
I remember watching this in elementary school for a field trip, and we got these paper Polar Express bookmarks and I think I still have mine somewhere too.
I've watched that movie once when it came out and never watched it again 'cause I didn't like it. Now, after your reaction, I don't even know why I didn't like it and want to watch it again 😂 Also, love how Mason Quinn made a Captain Jack Sparrow here after hearing "savvy" 😂👌💜
It's still my most favourite Christmas movie out of all. The action scenes are the best ones I've ever seen in any movie. You have the stakes and the running clock and every second just revs the tension, even though the time is standing still throughout their whole journey to the North Pole. Pure magic. I shall always treasure this movie.
My Grandpa was a worker on the Polar Express for many years up here from Maine to Boston. it was a for a long time a yearly event. and he loved it. the train continued into New York. but his job stopped at Boston. He came back home after doing his shopping in Boston. but loved greeting the children and their Families.
When you manage to make a steam train drift on ice like a street race in Tokyo in a Christmas movie without it being confusing you know it's a masterpiece
And he also loved thanking them all for coming at the end of their ride. he had grown too old to make the full trip, but they kept him on to do that because some of the kids grew up being greeted by Jack.
The DVD our family got came with a 3D version. Which explains some of those angles. I love this movie, but watching it again, I got the man tears going! Aye yi yi!
This movie came out the year I was born and my elementary school played it every year before Christmas vacation and the nostalgia is great. I still have the book and dvd that it came with since 2009
I don't know if this has been said, but the movie was in Imax 3D when I saw it. You can really tell that's what it was designed for with the rollercoaster type shots.
If you get a chance to see this in IMax...DO IT! The 3D is amazing. Saw this when it came out...with my then 17 year old son...we were grabbing for the ticket as it flew around, I literally had to sit on my hands. Now, to Oak's message...my son is gone now. I lost him a couple years after seeing this movie with him. I will always cherish sharing this movie with him. You only have one family...relish in every memory you can share, and make more every chance you get.
My favorite Christmas movie ever, watched it on repeat when I was a kid, I know the songs by heart, when Christmas comes to town song is my fav, everything is so perfect in this
This is an all time classic. a must watch every christmas. If youre looking for others, i think Rise of the Gaurdians and Klaus are fantastic, if you havent seen them yet! great reaction guys!!!
For me and some friends I remember it as "Motion Sickness - The Movie". But rewatching it now with you guys as an adult I really appreciate the fun and atmosphere. Not one of my top 10 chistmas movies but still a great one. But alongsides with masterpieces like Miracle on 34th Street or Home Alone that would be very hard. But also you can never have to much of Tom Hanks in a movie :D
This is such a great movie. I loved the book growing up. For the past 14 years our local railroad museum has done a Polar Express train ride for people that my family has done every year. The ride lasts an hour and they take everyone to the “North Pole” where Santa comes aboard and gives everyone a bell. During the ride they serve hot chocolate and cookies. They have dancers come through dancing to the hot chocolate song and the hobo arrives throughout the trip talking to the kids. The ride to the “North Pole” they read the story to everyone and the ride back they play Christmas carols for everyone to sing along to.
Btw this came out the year I was born. I was a picky move watcher growing up. I only watched movies from the 90s and before. This was one of the few children's movies I watched. And we e watched it every Christmas no matter what.
Something that is hinted towards the end of the movie, is the way time works. You hear the conductor repeatedly say how they're going to be late and arriving 5 minutes late, aka 5 minutes till midnight. If you look at the clock in the elf town square, the same time. The kids, when in the santa bag, were about to go over the tree and the hero girl says, "Its still 5 to. Were going to make it" The know it all kid telling the conductor how it is only 5 till, that theyre not late, and the conductor says, "Exactly!" With the many hints, the kids were only gone 5 minutes as time froze for them. Which is added humor with the conductor worrying about being on time.
If we're on a strange animation movies binge, I highly suggest A Scanner Darkly. It was shot normally and then they painted over it. Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson, and Rory Cochrane. Mind fuck of a movie
I was 20 when this was released, and still went to the theater to see this with my mother. I wasn't half the Christmas nut as I am now, just curious to new sort of animation I guess. It went to be an instant Christmas classic in my country. The train also holds a flux capasitor thanks to Zemeckis. 😄

We had pajama day, ate cookies, drank hot chocolate, and watched the Polar Express. I miss that part of childhood...
I remember when I first saw this, it was OK. But since then, I've had my first kid. Hits different. My desire for kids (and adults) to see the magic of giving and receiving has returned.💌
Great movie, I remember seeing it in the theater with my grandma. The Oak really hit me in the heart with his review, merry Christmas. Love you guys
I used to watch this movie on every christmas eve, and still is my favorite christmas movie of all time! Merry Christmas from Brazil guys 🎄
I love THE APPLETON OAK so much man. Love seeing his reactions ever since his Potter journey
You guys would LOVE Rise of The Guardians, it’s basically holiday Avengers, and a highly underrated animation from Dreamworks 🤩❤️✨
Oaks reaction and message to this was on the spot!! Merry christmas to all of you
Something about this movie has stuck with me, I can't exactly put why because I still don't know why. It's one of those movies that has stuck with me and probably will until the end of time. I usually watch on Christmas Eve late at night because that's when it feels the most real, the most gripping, the visuals, the soundtrack is something I can't get over.
What Oak said was beautiful. ❤️
new sub, but cant stop watching more from u guys. Keep it up🙂
🙏🤜🤛
So far best channel for Christmas reaction 😄 Thanks guys 🥰
🙏🤜🤛😁
Every Christmas Eve for the last 20 years, me and my dad have watched this movie,
It's become a family tradition.
You should do Klaus next, soooo good! Should´ve won the Oscar.
This movie, for me, is my Childhood Christmas Movie (and Book) I have so many memories attached to it.
Also that ending line always make me teary eyed
Aye yi yi!
I love how when he finally heard the bell you all smiled so genuinely
Oak I think you are wearing the perfect Christmas shirt for this movie. Die Hard is definitely about family and protecting what is important.
Just picture Clint Eastwood pulling a Gran Torino on Tom Hanks when the train rolls up. 'GRRRRR, get off my lawn!!'
My favorite Christmas movie ever, watched it on repeat when I was a kid, I know the songs by heart, when Christmas comes to town song is my fav, everything is so perfect in this
This was the movie that might have helped me to love trains 🚂. Now, I know it has (some) inaccuracies, but I can’t help but smile whenever I watch it!
I remember watching this as a kid and thinking it was live-action 😂 I thought they were just really weird looking/behaving people 😅
I remember I was in 4th grade when this came out, we had a day trip to the theater to watch it before the break started.
Such a good memory 💜🎄🤘
This is an all time classic. a must watch every christmas. If youre looking for others, i think Rise of the Gaurdians and Klaus are fantastic, if you havent seen them yet! great reaction guys!!!
I still cry at the end every single time! 😁
The absolute best Christmas movie!
Man they did such a good job with making you really feel every chug if that train.
such a heartwarming emotional film
This is a classic my favorite part is when the conductor guides the train off the ice the left right that whole scene was awesome
One of, if not my favorite Christmas Movie! I can quote the whole thing start to finish because of how many times I've seen it!
I watched this in cinemas when I was 4. Have watched this film every year since.
I think you guys would be mesmerized by studio Ghibli animations, like Nausicaä, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away
I watch this movie every Christmas, Tom Hanks did 5 of the voices for this movie
My family watches this movie every Christmas eve, I'm glad that y'all had a good time with it!
This felt like 3 uncle' watching my favorite Christmas movie
Unlocking a memory from my childhood!!
Btw this came out the year I was born.
I was a picky move watcher growing up. I only watched movies from the 90s and before. This was one of the few children's movies I watched. And we e watched it every Christmas no matter what.
loved that you guys finally got to experience this beautiful adventure!! such a unique christmas movie, definitely my favorite
I still remember going with my school year level in primary school to the cinema to watch this. Good times 😁
Watching this in 3D was the most of a roller coaster!! But so much fun!!
Nice catch with the reflection on the bell Oak, never noticed it before and ive seen this movie a thousand times.
Another strange animated movie is mars meets mom. I remember everyone hated it but I loved it for some reason
my son is 22 as he loves this movies has since it came out. Not only is this a must see for our family but we have the linoel set that came out.
Love how oak is barely holding it together 😂
I was 20 when this was released, and still went to the theater to see this with my mother. I wasn't half the Christmas nut as I am now, just curious to new sort of animation I guess.
It went to be an instant Christmas classic in my country.
The train also holds a flux capasitor thanks to Zemeckis. 😄
