Glad the secret is getting out. It definitely has potential in the international community. If only it got the coverage it deserves from the international sporting community
The men's season kicks off in March and runs through September. There is an older video that touches on some other facts such as the size of the ground compared to other sports. Not sure if you know much about cricket, but the Aussie game was invented to keep cricketers fit in winter back in the 19th century, They had cricket grounds available so that's what they used.
gold coasts first home game, near brisbane is saturday 18th march, brisbane first home game is friday march 24th, and the season ends in late september
This. Is a much better video than the American explanation. Explained by Aussies. I'm 49 born and raised in Queensland and have never really got into AFL but one of my best mates played at local level on the gold coast. Im Really starting to enjoy listening to it on the radio on triple m our local radio station usually while I'm busy working or driving home. I'm definitely no expert but I appreciate a high level of athletic fitness and skills are needed to play this game. Definitely worth taking in a game.glad you're coming to my town of Brisbane. There's plenty to do and see around brizzy and this year hasn't been too hot so far. Hope you have a fantastic time mate😀
Welcome to the best game on the planet. Watch the AFL 50 best marks next. That vid will blow your socks off. Attending a game is a must, and make sure to enjoy a pie smothered with sauce, and a beer. Cheers mate. 😀
The AFL started as the premiers cup from around 1865 , then VFA 1877 , THEN VFL in 1897 ,and has Evolved since it started , it's a ripper game GO BLUES RARARA
It's well worth getting to a game if you can. Brisbane are going to be contending for the title this year. Preseason matches usually start in March, so it will depend when you are going to be here.
The 2023 AFL Season starts on the 16th of March and finishes about the 30th of September so you should be able to go to a live game if you are here during this period. Cheers from Australia.
Welcome to the greatest game in the World!! Thursday March 18 is the 2023 Season opener but depending on when you get to Australia, there will be practice and preseason matches to watch! Enjoy.....
The playing field is an oval. There were about 90,000 people at the westcoast / collingwood Grand Final at the Melbourne cricket ground. Yeah we love it
Mate Hi , when you come to Brisbane Australia, ( i think you said you have family here in Brisbane ) ,and you want to go and watch AFL ( mens ) football game , the AFL season Starts Early MARCH and goes for 6 months , Friday Nghts and on the weekends , , Enjoy you stay Mate,
I hope you do get to check out an AFL game, but rugby is more popular in Queensland. The seasons run at about the same time, but AFL very much takes a back seat to rugby over there, especially with news coverage and tv broadcasting.
The thing that really sets AFL beyond and above every other code , is that since the first game of Football played on a rugger pitch , our game was codified earlier , And it has not stopped evolving since , look back the game changes rules every year, some drastic , some forced , drugs in sport , serious Concussions, but it's blink and you'll miss something worth watching ,and exciting , you have no idea , it's just an extraordinary game played by extraordinary sportsmen and women , it's magic , a feast for the eyes , a blessing for the soul , SOUL ,,, GO BLUES.....RARARA
Hi! (I’m the guy in the comment section at 7:46 lol) Welcome to the greatest sport on earth! Honestly I’m surprised why the beautiful game has been hidden away for so long in the international community. We hope you enjoy your time watching our sport. Go Hawks! 💛🤎
As an Australian myself its very fun to watch and play my favourite position is midfield but the only protection you have is a mouth guard it can be very brutal but very fun and i play and it is very fun #PORTADELAIDEBESTTEAM
This game is very old beginning in the 1860s. We take the sport seriously as say European Football or Americans would love their brand of football. This is a game we grow up with and think little of its complexity. The womens league started in recent years and is in it's early development. This video must be the latest version of explaining Australian Rules Football (AFL).
Australia has 4 versions of "football". Rugby union, rugby league, AFL (or Aussie Rules) and soccer. AFL is the biggest but in QLD and NSW, rugby league and rugby union are more dominant.
NRL is only big in NSW from just south and west of Sydney up to Ballina. Idk about QLD since I live in NSW but AFL still has a big following here in NSW, you just have to look in the right places
If yr in Queensland you can get a lot of fruit picking or farm work . When yr in a country town. , Go to local footy games .it's a great way to bond with the locals . Enjoy your trip buddy
Good on you digger. It began as Victoria Football League, before it became National, now the Australian Football League. Played over our winter. I live in Canberra. I prefer Rugby. It's all good. The atmosphere, with 80,000 fans at a match is electric. Hope you have q great holiday here. Cheers.
If your going to Brisbane the game played up there is Rugby League (not to be confused with Rugby Union) You need to watch a how to play Rugby League its like NFL but without the stoppages between plays.
I'm going to to México this year and you're coming here 🤣, I hope you have a great time here in Australia amigo ohhh and my edit,,,, GO THE MIGHTY PIES😉😉
It’s been played for several years now in other countries and teams have come here to play their finals against other countries but covid put an end to it for a while but it’s started up again.
Its a shame more people overseas havent heard about it. Its not actually a blend of all the other sports its the original sport being one of the oldest codified sports on earth , older than soccer , 1858 I believe . There is even elements of a much older game played by the aboriginals within it, probably why so many aboriginals excel at it. You should definitely go to a game . Its super fast , spectacular, multi skilled and it can be played by any sized player from the small fast players to the tall strong players and every size in between . There are actually quite a few teams forming around the world from the US and Canada to all over europe and as you can see the ladies are now getting more coverage in the last few years. This is a pretty good video from which to learn the game but there are a lot of highlights by individual players like Buddy Franklin , Cyril Rioli, Dustan Martin , Eddie Betts. There's also the best marks of all time and one called The decade that delivered Geelong and Hawthorn that documents one of the biggest rivalries of all time. Welcome to the greatest sport in the world.
Definitely see if you can go for a kick, too. They often let people on the ground for a kick after the gane. And if you happen to really enjoy it, you can always start a team in Mexico. There are plenty of teams in the US that would come down to play.
"You do this to Neymar and its over!"🤣 Someone has probably already recommended watching AFL biggest hits or AFL, here comes the boom. If not, check em out. These hits are not a regular occurrence, but pretty bloody mental. You would think someone might die from some of these. We are seeing the results of head trauma now as well, much like the NFL players are Onya mate
Brisbane is expected to be around 3rd or 4th best team , it's not a huge sport in Queensland so expect closer to 20,000 people at a game instead of 100,000 but it's well worth attending just for the crowd experience
I played rugby league and union but if I had my life over I would definitely play Aussie Rules. It’s a free flowing game compared to rugby and would suit me more. Unfortunately I grew up in an area without a Aussie Rules competition .
Mate this is a man’s game. Unlike soccer where if they get flicked in the ear they drop to the ground like a sniper shot them. Or they get kicked in the shins even though they’re got shin pads on they roll around like there dying.
So glsd uou have been introduced to AFL - It took a while for me to study the rules just based on what I was watching. And it then made so much sense. But that aside, they have to totally FIT to do what they do - no real rest. The game was at its best maybe 10 years ago - before violence doing the biffo that we expect in NRL started seeming in - never been sure if it was done as a tactic to bring more attention. It is a brilliant game.
Haha, that Neymar comment. He would be rolling around for days! Have to see the Brisbane Lions, they are one of the best teams in the league right now too!
I'm an Aussie who has no idea about Aussie Rules or Aussie no rules as it's known in Queensland or AwFuL football played by Mexicans from Victoria. If you can work it out, let me know.
The original was created particularly for the US market back in 2014 so it has an American accent. I think we accept it over this due to that accent. We are more forgiving when we believe it is made for someone else, especially those outside Australia. Many lines in this video are identical but the Aussie accent and tone here makes it sound like they are talking to kids, but only to us Aussies. Foreigners probably wouldn't feel like that so much.

Yes, my friend, when people who watch Australian football or rugby - no pads in either game - see world football players writhe on the ground after a tiny clip, we roll our eyes and think that they are incredibly weak. Also for overdoing it, like a kid fake-crying harder to get more sympathy. It is hard for us to forgive this kind of self-serving drama. It is the antithesis of what we understand to be good sportsmanship.
There's an amatuer league in the US- USAFL. And most major cities in North America have a club. Search them up and join the best game you'll ever play.
@Michael Rogers you're basing that on the minutes of the meeting they held, which were not a full set of rules. Australian football already had established rules in the school football game, and formally codified them in May 1859. The Sheffield Rules were finalised and not formally published in full until after October of 1859.
@michaelrogers2080Aussie Rules is the oldest football code. Sheffield Rules was basically a rip off of Rugby School Rules. But no matter who was first Aussie Rules is a far superior game to soccer.
Try watching the 3rd State Of Origin game played in Brisbane 2022 , Rugby League that's our main game in Qld but they are all good and have their place
Give it 20 years. The next gen will be much better and more skilful than the foundation players. The earliest recorded men’s grand finals were just as bad as the women’s league and look where they are now
Glad you enjoyed our game - Australia's best kept secret. The main men's competition runs from March to September.
Glad the secret is getting out. It definitely has potential in the international community. If only it got the coverage it deserves from the international sporting community
As an Australian I love watching people react to my favourite sport

Just played during winter, hence the shorts. In summer we play cricket, in long sleeves.

Well the Gabba can only hold 42000, so you can't expect any more than that for any sport in Queensland.
I played rugby league and union but if I had my life over I would definitely play Aussie Rules. It’s a free flowing game compared to rugby and would suit me more. Unfortunately I grew up in an area without a Aussie Rules competition .
Best game in the world 💪🏾👌🏾
To think that all the comparison sports you named, this league is older than all of them including soccer, & NFL (American football)
No! It's NOT a bit of anything.
The game was first played in 1858 and the rules were codified in 1859 so, it pre-dates most other sports.
Good onya, mate!
Best game in the world got everything
Good team , Brisbane are ready to win this year.
AFL started in 1886 long before NFL,soccer and basketball
We might be biassed, but we think it's the best team sport in the world. It's also one of the oldest sporting competitions in the world.
Mate this is a man’s game. Unlike soccer where if they get flicked in the ear they drop to the ground like a sniper shot them. Or they get kicked in the shins even though they’re got shin pads on they roll around like there dying.
My Sydney Swans team got humiliated in last years grand finals. 😢

You need to check out What Is AFL: Aussie Rules Explained, the original is better than the upgraded version.
Agreed, original is much more hype. They speak to us like children in this one
The original was created particularly for the US market back in 2014 so it has an American accent. I think we accept it over this due to that accent. although this one explains the rules a lot lot better
This one is better I reckon because it explains more that wasn’t covered in the original, plus some rule changes occurred since 2014

Unlike soccer, no 'girly men' play Aussie Rules. No padding, no bullshit.
Best and oldest football code. If you’re here during footy season you must go. One thing you’ll notice is that opposing fans mingle.
@Michael Rogers you're basing that on the minutes of the meeting they held, which were not a full set of rules. So what ya saying is ya want to visit australia but not end up a cripple?
Watch "What is AFL?" although dated, its miles better then this video.
one thing wrong womens game is losing support
Afl was the first football game so any other footy came after ours
@Michael Rogers nope and nope. Not sure why you are pushing this barrow.
rugby duh???
there is a much better guide to AFL, this isnt so good
Why would they show womens football. It is terrible. It is a male game. Nobody wants to see a second rate game,
Give it 20 years. The next gen will be much better and more skilful than the foundation players. The earliest recorded men’s grand finals were just as bad as the women’s league and look where they are now
Enjoy Australia mate.
Welcome to the best game in the world mate
Carn the saints
There’s not actually 18 teams in the AFL. There’s only one. They are called the Sydney Swans.🦢🦢🦢
