    Finished this project yesterday, on a 2001 F150. It was a (2) day project, I had a cpl screws left over, but accomplished w/o assistance from another. Very gratifying to save the $$, couldn't/wouldn't have attempted w/o these videos,....THANK YOU.

    Tips like that shift control wire are gold. they are also the main reason that DIY effort can backfire, since a minor mistake may erase any potential saving, even if you put in all the effort to learn how to do this yourself. But the payoff for many of us comes in the form of deeper understanding of how these devices go together. Even without saving money I like that feeling of accomplishment....

    I truly love watching an old school real mechanic. These days schools are pumping out ASE mechanics that can’t change a clutch. But will say he mentioned cutting corners. I am a mechanic also and he did several unnecessary steps. Lost some time on someone’s dime. Total should be 3 hours total job. I charge 468.00 to do this job.

    I just wish he would have explained the true time this takes 8 hrs for the most experienced mechanic who does this daily ,he’s not kidding get 4 boxes of 25 spaces label your boxes DO NOT TAKE ON THIS PROJECT UNLESS YOU ARE MECHANICALLY INCLINED AND HAVE DAYS TO WASTE!
    This is no joke I would rather rebuild an engine then do this project! This guy does have the best video for instruction I’ve found top notch Thanks for the video!

    I thought about your parts box holder and I think I improved it. Got an old stamped steel cupcake pan at the 2nd hand and put a magnet in each 'cup'. Put a color dot on each magnet and a matching dot on each component as I took things apart. Then took a color Crayon and rubbed the threads of component screws. I am a complete amateur but got everything in and out with no mysterious 'leftovers. The color-coded thread on the screws helped when I had to reposition some things and found a wayward screw on the floor mat. Quickly located the empty hole in the color-matched component. The magnets let me move the parts box around without worrying too much about spillage.

    Great videos.. My only tip is make sure before you start taking things apart that your a.c/heater gauge is turned to the cold side to make sure the blend door is shut.. Mine was set to heat and I had to reconnect power to close it

    I work for Chryslar Dodge Jeep of Nashville and I look for all the experience that is out there. I like that I see the best mechanics out there and how long it takes and how they know what they are doing. I trust my mechanics!!!!!

    I did one of these on a 1998 F-150. It is a mean bitch. I had to replace the blender door in the one I was working on. I just pulled the dash back from the passenger side and took the top off the duct case to replace the door. You will earn your money on this job.

    Did this job last weekend and came 5 screws ahead. Havmt had problems yet and my heat works. I'm sure I can find something to use those screws for 🤣🤣🤣

    great video and nice instructor. My 98 F150 x cab shortbed 4x4 is a great vehilce and I maintain it. I hall attemt my rask tomorrow with this video. Good idea for the bolt bins.

    I thought about having my 4 grandsons help with my heater core in our f-150, but I think this a little above my skill level and theirs.

    The book on a heater core for a 1998 F-150 is 6.9 hours, according to Alldata! GM heater cores take a long time too! What do we glue the weather strip back on with? For a 1998, that truck is really clean inside and out. Imagine what could be or has been found... I agree that with a little advanced thought by the designers, this could be so much easier. How often do Ford heater cores need R&R ,typically? Great Video!!!

    Whoever disliked this video is just jealous, this guy is good. I think that maybe he did all that disassembly because of the weight, just like he said " a robotic arm puts it in".

    THE HEATER CORE GUYS HAVE PROVEN THE DEALER AND OTHER MECHANICS ARE OVER CHARGING TO DO THIS, IT TAKES 2 PEOPLE ABOUT 2 HOURS FROM START TO FINNISH IF YOU WATCH THE VIDEO, THATS HAVING FUN, TAKING YOUR TIME , AND SAVING A LOT OF MONEY...YOU DONT HAFT TO REMOVE ALL THAT CRAP....

    Ford made all of this extra work for aesthetics. They could've made it a lot simpler by just making the dash 2 parts with a seam down the center.

    You're the man! Let me ask another question. Why am I about to have to do this for the FOURTH time!? Is ford just notorious for crap heater cores? I have a '99 f-150 with the 4.6L engine. After the third heater core replacement I had it to a shop and they flushed the radiator really well, and said it was really nasty. That lasted me about three years I suppose. So would routine, maybe annual, radiator flushes make it last longer? I'll say, I'm getting pretty good at this point, but my dash seems to get a little worse every time :)

    the starter wire under the wheel column is the reddish wire w/bluish stripe on my 1998

    I believe the park indicator in the new f150s is controlled electronically, unlike this one which is mechincal..

    I'm doing this on a 98 Navigator and the top piece of the heater box is sticking at the back between the heat core and the evaporator. A ford tech said I need to disconnect the evaporator also and take the whole assembly to get the top piece off. Is this necessary. It looks just like the one in the video so I am surprised.

    God I thought there would`nt be another dash removal job when they made the 84 Thunderbird Geez 14 hr job Chilton 7 out 7 in one weekend just to remove the heater core --and on the outside theres room for a door figures .

    Hi, excellent video man, very informative, however, im trying to remove the bezel or trim piece that is around the cluster and i cant remove the Headlight Switch, which clearly has a hidden screw behind it holding the last part of the plastic trim, i've seen some of the switches have a notch below but mine doesnt have one, im afraid of breaking the knob trying to pry out the plastic and getting it off, is there any special procedure on removing it? I have a 97 F150

    Maybe I'm missin somethin here. How would an airbag deploy if it's not connected to electrical power in any way, shape form or fashion? I know the SDM on GM products sends electrical power to the inflator modules when it wants to deploy that has a capacitor that gives it power for 10 minutes or so after battery disconnect. Does Ford put capacitors in each of their inflator modules as well as their airbag computer to give them power?

    @skillsfall Hope they thought you to cut the b+ lead to and leave it drain off stored electricity from capicitors, 1st rule before you stsrt cutting :)

    My father and I just replaced his heater core in a 97 f150 using this video as a reference. We have about everything reassembled but apparently something happened and the truck doesn't seem to have any other gears besides drive. When in the "park" position according to the cluster panel, it's really in drive and when trying to shift gears there is nothing else besides drive. What possibly happened here?

      Take the cover off and check every wire hooking the steering wheel. .you noticed the meckanic had the cover off with all the wires exposed . good luck perhaps a wire tester wouldnt hurt

    Jake Payne & his helper loosened the dash is 17 mins... Also once they had the dash pulled back & accessed the heaterbox/core they cut off the core nipples with a small cutoff wheel (Dermel) and then pulled the hoses loose under the hood,,, the special hose loosing tools you used were not needed.... (I'm just sayin')

    This video makes me wonder if it's a good idea to have an air bag in front of my beautiful face when I drive. I once met a lady who was suing GM because her air bag went off for no reason and messed up her face.

    That was pitiful towards the end they’re putting a disclaimer about how the brackets are attached to the floorboard in to the firewall and showing absolutely no process of how you got to those! That was not cool not even an explanation of how you get to him thanks a lot not!

    Your taking too much stuff off that is not necessary to remove the dash. It can be done in about 15 minutes w/1 doctor.

    definitely done this job too many times! Ford has so much crap design like this, i wanna puke when people tell me that ford is better then chevy. Better at crap designs and not fixing flaws for a decade. oh well, keeps me busy with plenty of work!

      It's not a Ford issue, it's a modern vehicle issue. There is a lot of planned obsolescence engendered into the modern vehicle. They do not want the consumer working on their own vehicles.
      For comparison, changing the heater core in my 1985 F250 is almost as easy as changing an air filter. The heater box with it's removable cover is dead behind the glove box. Drop the glove box door, pull the box, pull the cover, the heater core is right there. Couldn't be easier.

    Only 10 major bolts hold that dash in! Why on earth are you taking all that crap off for? Just remove the steering wheel all electrical connectors on driver side. Worked for ford 10 years and you sir are just doing unnecessary removals. 6-8 hours it takes me for a complete job. Over working yourself. 2012 even easier done in 4 hours....

    Horrible engineering. Should be much easier to get to. Either 2 piece dash or accessable from under the passenger side dash. Horrible design.

      I agree. Vehicles are NOT engineered to be serviced, the are engineered for the factory robots to be assembled. Too Bad
