Nice review although you forgot to mention the best thing about the 7800 version - the co-op and deathmatch modes. I didn't care much for the deatchmatch mode but the co-op mode (which 7800 Centipede also had) was a lot of fun and made things more exciting.
You should mention the 2-player mode on the 7800 version. This and Centipede had awesome 2-player simultaneous modes which was what really put them miles ahead of the 2600 version.
This was such an incredibly awesome port of Asteroids. It was often referred to as Asteroids Deluxe, but I've played a port of the arcade Asteroids Deluxe and I must say that this 7800 version is way better. The rendered animation on the asteroids, the colorful graphics, and the killer ambient space sounds in the background!
When that music came up at the end and watching the footage I just had an image of Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar. Did Tempest come out on any other Atari console out of coursity?
The vector graphics of the arcade boxes (and MAME) are so simple and elegant, that for me, they really enhance the controls and the "purist" gameplay experience of Asteroids. I don't like the bitmap graphics or gameplay of the console ports but the arcade version is one of my all-time favs.
I like all versions except the 2600's, which looks like it was designed overnight. This one looks like the most graphically advanced, even more advanced than the original arcade.
I loved this Game. I remember, had to go to Bed @23h and I was sitting there till 3 or 4h in the morning. And the next Day @ school i was sleepy. LOL Yeah, yeah, the good old Times.....
Asteroids is my favourite classic arcade game. Although I prefer one of the remakes on the PC, can't remember the name since I haven't played it in a while. It was released in mid-90s and had SVGA graphics.
Oh sorry about people not liking my comment. Just remember that the game's purpose is clearly explained in that version, you get more ships, can cheat (lol), it looks better, and there are special shots.
I've always been horrible at Asteroids, and I've never really liked it. Although, I did like a Asteroids clone I had once called Comet Busters. This has special abilities such as Hyperspace, shield, and an Asteroid like magnet shield thing, which would pull or repel Asteroids, as well as a disruptor. It was a 4 player PC game, really sweet actually. The "Asteroids" were also differently shaped, my favorite was the 4th level, the Asteroids were billiard balls.
It's great to see that Classic Game Room is still around and better than it's ever been today. The original episodes with Dave are still great though, wish that could still be possible. CGR 4 LIFE!
I remember playing this on the arcade machine. It was way before my time, but my friends dad bought an original asteroids machine that was broken and fixed it. Even though I had a Nintendo 64, I thought asteroids was the best game ever! (all I had was really sucky N64 games)
@ScrewAttackEurope There are prototypes for classic systems, like I know there's one out there for the Atari 2600 (I've played it.) I think there was even a 5200 version planned too, but again, cancelled. (Probably due to the 1983 Video game Crash)
Looks worlds better than the old seizure-inducing vector graphics of the earlier versions. I never liked Asteroids much anyway - same goes for Pac-Man actually - both have shallow, repetitive, depressing gameplay. In both cases you're trapped in a small dark space from which you can never leave, forever fighting a foe that will never be beaten, who will only come back faster, stronger and more numerous if you're somehow able to achieve short-lived victory. It's kinda like being in Hell! :D

What the hell is that sweet music that kicks in at about 2:50?
What is the end music used? Freakin' awesome!

What song's playing at the end? I like it. :)
You are aware that if you select a different "skill" on asteroids for the 2600 they won't go vertical all the time. A/B switches remember?

Yes that music is indeed epic.
My favorite game ever.
two player co-op, versus and alternating turns make this a great version.

This channel is awesome

@PandaGirl1907 You're welcome, have some fun! =P
2-player mode really makes this game. Asteroids deathmatch yeeehh!!

Dude holy shit! I actually played Comet Busters when I was a kid. Thank you for reminding me of that game.

Why don't this 7800 remake classic including Asteroids Deluxe?
my church actualy had the origional cabine, it was awesome and hard to get 200 points
They have asteroids in atari's greatest hits
It is out there because the pilot got stuck in an Asteroid Belt while returning home.
Oh yeah, nostalgic!

@InecomCompany Mark I just wanted to say your awesome.
Heh. the programmers jokingly called this "Meatballs in Space"
heh I had Asteriods for the 2600 and this one looks much better. I liked Asteriods, though I wasn't a huge fan of it anyway.
wow... just wow...
was there asteroids on the 5200- er I mean 2500? er I mean- ah forget it!
Yeah I never cared for that game really either. But still cool video.
I hate meteors, too. Especially when they crash into planets. Especially when it's this planet. Earth. Yes. I know what planet I am living on. :-P
I actually prefer Space Rocks for the Atari 2600.
two player makes this the best asteroids.
thumbs up if you are sick and tired of comercials before the vids on youtube
This is really really good but none compare to the PS1 version.
this game was on everybody hates chris
