You are right--the reason that 7800 catridges were printed in Black and White was because of cost reduction. In fact, a lot of the Atari 2600 games re-leased with the red label (Jr. Pac-Man, Midnight Magic, etc), are printed in Black and White.
Then why were later 7800 games (87-90) all in color? You would have thought by then they would keep them in black and white since Atari Corp was bleeding money bad
80s Williams arcade games were insane with how busy-yet-engaging their gameplay was. Nothing tops Robotron, but Joust is almost as great. 😍 The 7800 port is rather good. I have the SNES adaptation, which feels like they merely emulated the arcade's code but that would be unlikely on 1992...
If there was a 3D version, I think you should be able to use the right analog to aim your jousting stick up, down, L or R. They should maybe even have a shield to deal with, too.
The only game that got nearly as much play time from me as "Joust" were the dueling tanks in "Combat"... so f'ing fun and full of laughs. Man, I have such fond memories of the 2600... and that was the home gaming system that started it all.
I just realized, these are pretty good sound effects for the TIA chip. I had the 8-bit computer version, and it sounds about the same. Did this cartridge have a POKEY in it?
Atari 7800 games have crappy labels because of Jack Tramiel. He didn't even want to release the 7800 and when he finally did they used grayscale labels to save money. I was a Nintendo kid but I think it's a tragedy that the 7800 was never given a chance. It's a technically superior machine to the NES and game developers could have made some kick ass games if they thought it would have been profitable. Jack Tramiel did a grave disservice to gamers.
Does anybody know what the framerate was for Atari 7800? I tried to look up the frame rate for the early Nintendo systems and couldn't find it. It's interesting that when the bird moves around, the animation is excellent, but for the parts of bird moving, like the wings that flap, there are only 2 animations.
Great games. I have this on Midway Arcade Treasures. I have both disc 1&2. Great ports of all the arcade games on this collection. These old games are a challenge and i like a nice simple game with a challenge. Good to get a break from all the 3D graphics of todays games.
Can anyone help me find the old Mac game that was veeerrrrry similar to this? It was basically the same thing, but the background had hieroglyphs and stone...and there was lava at the bottom?
You forgot to mention how short it could be played on the two-player arcade model. I was one of those noisome bastard players that would hover over the pad where the other player was materializing. lol (But if it was a friend, I'd play more collaboratively unless we got too bored.)
I have seen a used copy of the game you speak of once. I got Midway arcade treasures 1 & 2 brand new for 20 each. You can get them on Amazon brand new but they go for 40-50 dollars now. Best Buy or Target might carry them.
Inquiry: When I was a kid, I played this on the Atari 800. On that version, if you managed to smack the pterodactyl square on the nose with your joust, it dies and you get a bunch of points. (Really tricky to do) Is the same true on the 7800 version reviewed here?
The black and white labels are probably because of Jack Trameil. Jack totally ruined the 7800. For one, they could have beat Nintendo to market, they had all of them sitting in a warehouse for years. They were really cheap about everything, didn't support or actively recruit 3rd parties and they did everything to keep the roms as small as possible. This machine could have been great had someone with vision been running Atari at the time. Only 2 games used the pokey! What were they thinking?
you can really tell its by Williams as the sounds in joust are just like Defender , robotron and centipede though I am not sure who made the Atari 2600 version of centipede? I still have a factory sealed copy of Joust for the 7800 & I am seriously thinking of opening it, even though I have access to the game I much prefer playing on the original hardware. enjoyable review (as all-ways)
I knew a pair of kids back in the day who mastered the art of killing pterodactyls in the arcade. They got the lava hand to catch a Hunter and just waited on the 2nd level mid platform.
Awesome, got this version of Joust on SNES on the William's Arcade greatest Hits cartridge. Has Defender, Defender II, Joust, Robotron 2084, & Sinistar-alot better version of Joust than 2600 in my opinion
Ever play Joust 2? That game is way better than the first one. Only ever saw it in arcade once and it was awesome. Picked up a classic arcade disc for PS1 like 12 years ago and it had Joust 2 on it. It is so cool. You can turn into a Pegasus and even has boss fights. Love Joust always have..
You did not explain this or maybe you just didn't know but one could also joust the Terradactyl for extra points but you have to joust it right in the center of its beek or else you die. You're right, Joust was and still is the best arcade game out there.
There actually is a true "Joust" aspect to this game.. You can kill the fast flying "Petrodactyls" by stabbing them in the beak with your Joust stick. It's rather difficult to do, but can be done.
The Black and White labels were because Jack Tramiel was cheap. The 7800 was ready to release in 1984 (with most of the games that were eventually released), but Jack declared consoles were dead and just sat on them. When the NES was a hit two years later, he tried to cash in by dusting off the old consoles and games. Imagine how great 7800 games could have been if Jack hadn't stopped development for two years and been so cheap.
For backward compatibility purposes with the Atari 2600, 7800 used the same sound chip as the 2600, with the game makers having the option to implement their own sound chip on the game cart itself. (See Ballblazer for the 7800) It's too bad that hardly anyone made use of it. Instead, the bulk of the 7800's games sound like cheap handheld tiger electronics games. Check out 7800 Donkey Kong Jr. if you want your ears to bleed.
@yoshimasterleader but he is just a opposite. he takes bad games and makes them look awesome. my uncle has atari 2600 , 7800 and jaguar.and almost all the games are bad
If it wasn't 1 in the morning after watching like 50 of your vids i'd so play that right now, guess I'll have to wait until morning noooooooooooooooooooo
@yoshimasterleader yeah indeed, mark reviews a game for what it is and then gives his opinions on it all angry video game nerd and irate gamer does is just insult games over and over....we really dont need another reviewer doing that it would be pointless. mark is a godo reviewer, really informative and makes good point that nobody else makes about game...largely cus he intelligant and has knowledge on stuff i think atari games are really fun too, some bad ones, but mostly really good
@yoshimasterleader Precisely, plus Mark's easier on the ears as well. AVGN, to me, makes gamers look like a bunch of pencil necked geeks who have no lives and never will.
I would love to see this in 3D! Not HD 2D or 2.5D, 3D!!! Flying EVERY direction and stickin' it to 'em!! If I were to work @ a game company-that would be the first thing I'd make. :D
Can you imagine having insane ideas like this nowadays? That'd be damn bloody great!
Creativity?!
You are right--the reason that 7800 catridges were printed in Black and White was because of cost reduction. In fact, a lot of the Atari 2600 games re-leased with the red label (Jr. Pac-Man, Midnight Magic, etc), are printed in Black and White.

I have this game on one of the Midway Arcade Treasures discs for PS2. This is a great game to put on every now and then.
you can definatly tell its by williams as it has a lot of very familiar sounds ,used both in defender & robotron
The flying mechanic in Joust is like 1982 flappy bird, with a bunch of other crap flying at you trying to kill your ass.
Joust is awesomeness incarnate.
80s Williams arcade games were insane with how busy-yet-engaging their gameplay was. Nothing tops Robotron, but Joust is almost as great. 😍
The 7800 port is rather good.
I have the SNES adaptation, which feels like they merely emulated the arcade's code but that would be unlikely on 1992...
And it blows your mind when you hear the sound from Enduro playing
I want the high score in "Bird Ass"!
"Bird Ass".. ROFL, What a classic.
Hearing you narrate this, you almost sound like Harold Ramis.
If there was a 3D version, I think you should be able to use the right analog to aim your jousting stick up, down, L or R. They should maybe even have a shield to deal with, too.
This, Commander Keene and the original Mario Bros. were my favourite games back when we still had the old 486 running DOS. Aah, those were the days...
No, only Ballblazer and Commando have POKEYs in them.

I seriously doubt that the atari 7800 was graphically superior to the nes. I love atari and the 7800, but it had its flaws.
Does anybody know what the framerate was for Atari 7800? I tried to look up the frame rate for the early Nintendo systems and couldn't find it. I put so much money into that game in the 80's.....it was the only one I really played.....
You forgot to mention how short it could be played on the two-player arcade model. I was one of those noisome bastard players that would hover over the pad where the other player was materializing. lol (But if it was a friend, I'd play more collaboratively unless we got too bored.)

@PhilomathBret That might have more to do with the interlacing than anything else. This would look different if you played it I assume.
Inquiry: When I was a kid, I played this on the Atari 800. On that version, if you managed to smack the pterodactyl square on the nose with your joust, it dies and you get a bunch of points. (Really tricky to do) Is the same true on the 7800 version reviewed here?
My uncle knows the guy who made this!
I don't know if it is true in all versions, but in the Atari 400/800 port you were able to kill the pterodactyl in either (!) end.
The black and white labels are probably because of Jack Trameil. Jack totally ruined the 7800. For one, they could have beat Nintendo to market, they had all of them sitting in a warehouse for years. Good ol' BIRDASS
Love Joust always have..
they hav this game, robotron, and digdug in the xbox arcade
the best home version of Joust was on the Atari 7800
You did not explain this or maybe you just didn't know but one could also joust the Terradactyl for extra points but you have to joust it right in the center of its beek or else you die.
You're right, Joust was and still is the best arcade game out there.
You are aware that the 7800 cartridges were black and white because Tramiel (who owned Atari at the time) was cheap, right?
Ya I got the game for my old NES but I can't get past wave five. And did the makers of this game make altered beast for genesis.
Awesome game! Great memories of the arcades and the countless hours spent there.
This was the first game I bought off the PS3's PSN store.
i've been playing this game since i was 4!!!
There actually is a true "Joust" aspect to this game.. You can kill the fast flying "Petrodactyls" by stabbing them in the beak with your Joust stick. It's rather difficult to do, but can be done.

Grew up with this game
I loved finding this game in Donkey Kong 64.
Bird ASS, FTW!

this was my game back in the day i used to beable to get to level 80 before i died and that was when i was 5 now im 35 and i can barely pass lv40
@Wakkajakka Jetpac was the game in Donkey Kong 64. Rareware's first game.
I had a nifty rip-off on my C64 called bagdad where you rode magic carpets.
@amari2001 uhh... not sure about that lol
Fair point. You have converted me to Bird Assism.
Who would win in a fight: Bird Ass or Space's Ass? I don't think I really want to know
hey, are you afraid of terrys?? jeje
Actually, imagine how popular a game called "Bird Ass" would have been. Self explanatory. xD
@yoshimasterleader but he is just a opposite.
he takes bad games and makes them look awesome.
my uncle has atari 2600 , 7800 and jaguar.and almost all the games are bad
Atari was in a bit of financial trouble at the time, that's why the carts were probably b&w, just to cut costs as much as possible.
I still think the game that eats The most ammount of quarters ever is Metal Slug...
I did get the high score in Bird Ass....I was the Bird Ass champion.
i enjoy the old arcade mortal kombat games cuz their challenging
my ps3 wants to violate my intellivision game system by the power connector
@amari2001 No, Atari IS next gen =D
this reminds me of balloon fight...another great game!
Is is any better than saying "I'm off now to play with my Wii"?
Both are hilarious ^_^
Time 0:43 is so Enduro! [C:
poor timmy
im just curious did you ever call this game bird ass or are you just screwing around
It seems that this game is as intresting as going outside throwing rocks. Altought throwing rocks can be more developing.
Bird Ass! LOL! Can we get that one for Atari 7800?
If it wasn't 1 in the morning after watching like 50 of your vids i'd so play that right now, guess I'll have to wait until morning noooooooooooooooooooo
Bird Ass! Rejoice, mortals!
@yoshimasterleader yeah indeed, mark reviews a game for what it is and then gives his opinions on it
all angry video game nerd and irate gamer does is just insult games over and over....we really dont need another reviewer doing that it would be pointless. mark is a godo reviewer, really informative and makes good point that nobody else makes about game...largely cus he intelligant and has knowledge on stuff
i think atari games are really fun too, some bad ones, but mostly really good
they have a quest based on this in wow lol
this game rocks...its also very similar to balloon fight
balloon fight was based on Joust.
Neo Bogard - hallelujah! Thanks for clarifying for all these youngin’s!
You're so wrong, there's no net play, FPS, or even HD! *is being sarcastic, loves his genesis greatly*
got 102,000 score on the playstation network when incredibly drunk.
Great. Now I'm going to be calling this game "Bird Ass" whenever I play it.
Why doesn't he ever kill the pterodactyl.
man you are good
I got the high score in BIRD ASS!
hard game
my dad and i played this game to death!
@yoshimasterleader
Precisely, plus Mark's easier on the ears as well. AVGN, to me, makes gamers look like a bunch of pencil necked geeks who have no lives and never will.
damn youre good. wat about dig dug!!!
ready player one...
Whooped Acererak's ass in this game!
@Lupucillo Sesame Street Edition featuring Big Bird and his ASS!
Thy Game is Over.

Awwww great, another bird ass video.
I would love to see this in 3D! Not HD 2D or 2.5D, 3D!!! Flying EVERY direction and stickin' it to 'em!!
If I were to work @ a game company-that would be the first thing I'd make. :D
...What the fuck is this?
