  • JFRD received the call at about 4:30 am to a large fire at a commercial business, the caller did not know what was burning. The business was a metal recycling center, and the initial on scene report was numerous vehicles on fire...
As it turns out, it was not vehicles on fire, rather a large pile of metal to be recycled. The fire burned from deep within. No structures were in danger of ignition.
The biggest obstacle faced by crews was the distance fire hydrants were from the fire...that situation was easily mitigated, then the next obstacle was shutting down a major roadway just before rush hour traffic. Thanks to our partners with the Jacksonville Sheriff's
Office, that too was seamlessly handled and unfortunately just more of an inconvenience for morning commuters.
The business owner was also quick to respond and to provide an experience operator for the heavy equipment to move the metal pile and expose the seat of the fire.
No injuries were reported from this fire.

I am watching from Elmira NY how long did it take to bring that recycling center fire under control it looks like it was a bad one. I am glad the Lord Jesus kept everyone safe including the first responders

After moving the metal what turned out to be burning?

It is all the plastics and attachments to the metal that catch fire.

We’re the crews able to use any foam?

We could have, but it really was not necessary in this fire...once the operator showed up and started moving the pile around, we cooled and extinguished everything.

Recycling centers catch on fire all the time. I've seen tons of videos on them, I have a friend in SC and he lives about four miles from one of them and that place has had three fires in three years, the owner was called before the town council to explain why he has so many fires and he fired back at council saying he provided a service and jobs to people and he shouldn't have to explain himself to no one. The Mayor told him if he didn't get his house in order they would pursue legal action on him.

We have been to this very place multiple times...but I don't believe that you can just blame the owners, we as a society want to save the planet, and recycle, but then we are not willing to put the work in to dispose of things properly...so many things that we throw out have lithium batteries remaining with them, how do you keep them from deteriorating and catching fire...the business owner cannot be the sole responsible person...to properly prepare everything takes manpower, manpower takes time, time is money! You then take the business and their profit out of the mix...it becomes not worth it to recycle.
I can only imagine how many fires that they have when they are working that they handle on their own and never call us!
You cannot place this solely on the business owner...if we as citizens properly dispose of things, that would alleviate much of the problem
      Just some thoughts for consideration.

Fantastic footage. Thank goodness they had a machine operator to pull the metal pile apart, so that the water can get onto the fire. Excellent job . Have a great day ❤️🙂⚘️.

It took a while to get them there...but crucial in getting to the seat of the fire and extinguishment.
