RUSTIC OAK NIGHTSTAND

- Reclaimed old growth white oak primary and tulip poplar secondary wood went together using only traditional joinery to build this nightstand. No glue, nails, screws or clamps are needed just a few well placed wedges and an understanding of wood movement.
A bit of raw linseed oil thinned down in citrus solvent really brings out the color and grain of this great old wood.
The tight grained, slow grown old growth wood is a true pleasure to work with, much better than the stuff generally available today.
The patched trousers reminded me of a craftsman I worked with in a New England shop, who had three kids --- all got college scholarships. Came to work same time every day, walked home for lunch, boiled potatoes, wore patched clothes. He and his wife were Mormons from South Korea, and anytime anyone did anything right, he'd say, "Verry Goood ______________!" And it was a good group of people for 4 years.
Verry Gooood, Mr. & Ms. Chickadee!
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!! After about 30 videos from Mr. Chickadee I've watched, at 14:05, he slips and makes a mistake. He leaves his error in the video.......... shows how humble and down-to-earth he is!!! Thanks for another GREAT video. Your chisels and planes are so sharp, can't believe how well they shape wood.
I'd give my left foot for your tool collection and my right one to make furniture with you for a year or two. I'm in a wheelchair now so I don't really need them anyway...lol.
Dale, you just moved to the top of my hero list! :-) well played, Squire! Well played!
Nice piece. I really appreciate your videos. While watching this nightstand being made I was looking at a Woodworkers Supply catalog in the section showing all the glues they sell. During my woodworking career gluing and screwing was the preferred technique in our "quick and dirty" scheme of making cabinets. Sometimes we got to use dados or Lamello biscuits on the higher grades of cabinets. Today I mainly use epoxy on the knife handles I make. I did use your pinning technique using an offset hole and a stainless steel pin to attach a stabilized mango handle on a Japanese gyuto blade. It really cammed the blade into the handle and makes for a monolithic knife after the epoxy sets. I like your use of the nail stained oak top.
Mr. Chickadee and a Primitive technology to start my weekend off on, gotta love it !

Haha, I was just comparing them while watching with a friend.
GREAT comment!
The texture from the hand plane is a nice touch. Thanks for sharing.
I almost had a heart attack when you tapped the wedge into the dovetail joint but as always it turned out wonderfully and your skill is always apparent. One of the best channels on RUclips in my opinion.
Me too, holy cow.
Just throw that old board in the garbage. What? hold my beer. Love the Idea of using the old barn boards with this Piece looks like it was build years ago instead of recently. plus it gives it character. One of my favorite pieces Josh. Looks great. The dove tails locking the piece together with the light pine wedges causes the contrast to look amazing.
I've grown a very strong appreciation for your aesthetic.
In my opinion, this is the most useful RUclips channel.
I've never seen that done with dovetails before, that's a very cool idea to make the joint without glue. Nice touch with leaving the scrub plane marks on the outside of the nightstand.
Those wedged dovetails on the drawer look amazing. Really nice job!
The day will come when people look at your furniture like that of Robert Thompson in England. Look him up - the UK's Mr Chickadee. You are a very clever, quiet and patient man.
A pleasure to see Your work. My mothers father was a furniture carpenter and I grew up in his working hut!
Love the use of wedges. I expected the end tail of your drawer sides to split with the wedges but they seemed to hold. Nice details too. Cat supervision is always important.
Thanks, its very important the joints are very tight at the bottom of both the dovetail and the wedged tenons on the top, this squeezes the wood together and prevents splitting
Mr Chic, you work is excellent of course. Your drawer pulls have the same profile on the inside as 'trunnels' used in planking a wooden ship. Look for a 19th century schooner recently extracted from a remote beach in New Zealand named Daring. She went aground in 1866 and hull and framing is remarkably well preserved. As they were just starting to get her into a preservation area where she can be kept under spray one of the crew took a picture of a particular plank. The joint is solid after all those years.
Lol this dude makes a raised panel drawer bottom. I am in awe of his craftsmanship!
Gotta love a craftsman who lets his hands & tools do all the talking!
Thing of beauty
As time goes, the wood gets nicer, very pleased with the way you reuse old wood
This is really a great woodwork with hand and hand/manual tools... No machine or modern technology 👍
Thank you very much!
The first and only dovetail I have attempted split and chipped out and turned into a pile of boards. This video makes me cry.
The wedged dovetails did it for me! They look so beautiful and still provide strength and longevity. By far my favorite video because it's cabinetmaking
Beautiful work. Oak is my favorite wood.
I am partial to hedge, but oak would probably be in my top 3 favorite woods.
Thanks Josh, this design never gets old 👍👍. So simple and will withstand a couple lifetimes and maybe more. 👍👍👏🏻👏🏻
You must be a master of sharpening your tools they cut beautifully
I love the lack of fasteners and glue. The finished product seems so clean, so pure. Beautiful piece of furniture, thanks for another great video!
I'm still stoked about those wedged dovetails. Look great and structural as well. Very good work! Looking forward to more.
You are the Norm Abrams of hand tools! Great work!
Absolutely LOVE IT!!! You are the man Mr. Chickadee. I love the devotion to hand tools, I love the simplicity, the simplicity and leaving a lot of the tool marks is what gives it so much charm and beauty! Most of us wood workers get too caught up in getting perfect surfaces, but the tool marks give it way more character. Let people who see it know it was worked by someones hands rather than just machines. But I was perplexed to see you leave those pencil marks and finished over top of them. I would have at least sanded those away!!! haha.
stunning work as always
AWESOME....FREAKING INCREDIBLE!! To say the least...best woodworking craftsman I've seen!
Great, great video, good sir! A definite change from what I'm used to. No annoying background music to distract from the sounds of a woodshop and a woodworker doing his thing. It was very enjoyable and not ashamed to say, very calming.
Keep up the great work. I look forward to more and will go through your video library.
Oh...and I subscribed. Thank you for the videos.
Your craftsmanship gets better and better every video!!! WOW!! Thank you for the inspiration to get my butt out in the shop.
Man i just love these videos, just because everything is made by hand it looks really great. Thank you for the great content and keep up the great work Mr. Chickadee.
I feel like I'm at the Williamsburg woodworking shop---I can almost smell the wood fragments as they are planed out! Your work is so exceptionally meticulous and completed with such care. Alright now, with that wonderful nightstand that you now have made, I shall wait for the birth of a complementary wishing well table lamp. Best wishes and thoroughly enjoy watching your videos.
Always a pleasure to watch you at work
Beautiful. Not everything has to be precise to have beauty. Love that top out of recycled timber.
Have just started preparing wood for two bedroom night stands/tables. Will be GLUED to this...cheers...rr
Personally, I think that little grey cat reads the blueprints and tells Mr. Chickadee each step.....great help! I have a bookcase that is very similar in it's construction to this.
It is tremendous! I give a standing ovation!
Wow,what a beautiful piece ; your skill, patience and craftsmanship never cease to entertain and impress :)
Nice shop cat, reminds me of one of my grandmother's barn cats.
First thing I did was skip almost to the end. I always like to see whats being made , and then watch how someone did it. Very nice work.
Nice furniture and an amazing cat!
The master carpenter at work again, great build.
Wedged dovetails, so cool!
Once again....stunning!
I really like the wedged dovetails! I've never seen that before, but I'm going to have to try that myself. Great video as always.
You, sir, have yourself a new subscriber! The workmanship you put into all these pieces you make is absolutely astounding; I think God himself might be a tad jealous.
i see you take great pride in your workmanship and you should
Absolutely beautiful, as always. Thank you for leaving in the "saw slip". It makes me feel a little better that if a master like you can have a boo-boo in his woodworking, I am not so bad when it happens to me too. I absolutely love the wedged dovetails, no need for glue with any of your joinery on this magnificent piece of furniture.
Oh, and I love that the ends match the style of your bookcase a few videos back.
How do you not have a million subs yet. Everything you do is so incredible.
I guess other topics are more interesting
Mr. Chickadee, I only recently discovered your channel and I'm thoroughly hooked! Your timber framing series is outstanding and I've watched them all several times. Thank you for sharing your enormous talent!
Bravo. Superb skill and honesty in the finish of this piece. I felt the pure joy of 'making' in this video
This is incredible! Best craftsmanship I’ve seen on RUclips ! Especially those joints without glue! I really enjoyed this, thank you!
I like the wedged dovetail with the light colored wedge.
the wedged dovetail pins are a nice feature, great result!
Absolutely beautiful! I love the "no nails" joinery!
No nails and no glue joinery.
Another great piece for your home. Nice work!
Wow! Beautiful wood and work Mr. C.
That's the first time I've ever seen a wedged dovetail. Looks really nice.
And that bit of furniture right there will outlast all of us...
No amount of noise will stop Charles from lounging.
Another great video thanks for sharing
Watching you doing woodworking is what it must have been like watching Rembrandt paint.
The definition of rustic. It's amazing.
Mr. Chickadee, Good bravo, bravo 10+ Ciao.
Stickley would be proud of you!
wow love the look oak has very well done.stay safe thank you for the video.
I've built quite a few pieces using tusk tenons. I love that joinery style. And you do beautiful and work, friend.
That is some fine coping saw skills! Great build!
Great design and great project as usual. I am always impressed by the simplicity you manage to convey through your videos. Your design also is very nice : slender with european influences, but also ... a simplicity that makes me think of Japan. Keep doing these videos please, they restart the fire of some people's heart !
love the patina on that oak, nice piece of work
That is beautiful!! I love the detail!! Very inspiring!! Thank you!!
I believe that is the most beautiful drawer I've seen yet. It's been truly inspiring watching your guys' skills develop.
Such an artist you are👍❣️
Excellent, as always.
Charming piece of furniture.
Another time I'm totally impressed about your skills! Great job done.
Trellis terraces garden
Crazy good with a coping saw
A pleasure to watch! Thank you.
Another great piece of wonderful craftsmanship and beautiful furniture that will last a century! Put a little saw cut in the other three corners of the drawer face and it will look like part of the design (that's what I do - haha). I also put my finish on heavy and wipe with a cloth to smooth out the drips.
Might you have the time, in a future video, to slip in how you sharpen your chisels and planes? They are amazingly sharp as seen when you cut crossgrain so smoothly!
The cat seems to like seeing itself in the camera viewer - haha.
Thanks, mac! The nick was under the drawer, no one will see it unless they take it out and really look haha.

Mr. Chickadee Oh ok and thanks for the sharpening link. I had forgotten about that one.
Beautiful, love the joinery work.
Without any glue wow, congratulations
Very simple but nice! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful work my friend plus no mechanical fasteners.
muy buen trabajo!! congratulations!
No nails no screws... nice!
Silver surfer nor glue. Real skills here.
No nails no screws but still not all oak. But Fantastic! To say
Randy Henson
Nothing wrong with mixing wood. The contrast looks great and the reclaimed old growth oak is better saved for parts of projects that are more visible than the shelves.
On this one the shelves match all of the wedges.
And no glue! Very nice!
each time it's impressive thanks for sharing.
That piece is not only impressive but beautiful too. Awesome job !
Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
Nice, Beautiful and excellent craftsmanship Thank You for sharing
Wow, over 13 minutes in and...is even sand paper too modern? But your finish is perfect anyway. That beautiful old grain from reclaimed wood just does it for me, too. You are a true artist and I'm glad I found you!
Great stuff as always! Love the diagonal texture from the plane on the finished piece.
Beautiful work
I love your work, no nails is always an art. How about a simple, beautiful and practical breadbox on the future? Thanks
Maikav Vera
Yes, with roll-up opening? Or just a wood hinged lid/face?
I do love baking bread…;)
My favorite channel!😎👍🏻
Lovely work, as usual.
Tus trabajos son espectaculares, esas tecnicas son laa mejores que he visto saludos desde colombia
Outstanding, looks great!
