RED OAK SIDEBOARD

- This little sideboard cabinet goes together with all wood to wood joinery, no glue, nails, or screws needed. The framework is made up of quarter sawn red oak and quarter sawn tulip poplar. The panels are flat sawn red oak on show sides and poplar on the back and bottom. Framework goes together with draw bore pegs and through wedged tenons. The top is joined with draw bored free tenons and attaches to the base frame with sliding dovetails. The drawer uses wedged dovetails and stopped grooves so it needs no glue or nails to hold the bottom in place.
The finish is just some canola oil cut with citrus solvent, but really brings out the grain.

Humble and heartfelt thanks to all for the overwheming responce to this video.
bro your stuff is tip top
a masterpiece .. you are the best carpenter who works with hand tools that I have never seen in my life .. your work is amazing
Wood is to you what marble was to Michelangelo!!!! You don’t make things of wood, you sculpt them! Just magnificent! The cat approves...love it!
Anyone who says they can't fit a square peg in a round hole isn't trying hard enough.
;)
You do the species proud my friend. Please, whatever else you do; don't stop building!
Mr. Chickadee, there are only a couple of channels that I subscribe to that I get excited about when I see they have a new video out and yours is on top of that list! Ive actually been wondering when the heck you'd put out a new video and I see now that you've been putting in a LOT of work with this project. Bravo friend. I absolutely love your work and videos, you are definitely an inspiration to me. PLEASE keep the videos coming and if you ever want to bounce ideas or "youtube" questions off another like minded youtuber please hit me up! Till next time...

That wedged dovetail! Never seen that before,! Best videos on RUclips!
yeah, that was very interesting.
Wow! Working red oak with only hand tools! A manly wood worker! The new generation needs to take notice.
LOL Charles the awesome cat has to inspect the work. He wants to make sure the work is nice and square and the joinery is tight. The sideboard meets Kitty approval. Charles has high standards.
Very nice as usual, Mr. Chickadee. It's much nicer than mine from Ikea and I like the sliding doors on the bottom where mine is wide open.
Someday I'll make some curtains to close off the bottom shelves.
Hey Mr.C! A big G'day from Australia mate! Your videos are like water during a drought! Very much needed and appreciated. Big happy's to you and yours.
Everytime I watch one of your videos I feel like I've done a workout! It's like holding your breath when someone's singing. Thanks for sharing these wonderful videos! It's inspiring!
The live edge is very cool, your cat is the calmest cat in existence, if I tried hammering next to my cat he would totally freak out. Thanks
A delightful piece indeed. I particularly enjoyed seeing at 16 minutes how that weathered oak was planed so clean and beautiful.
Thank you very much!
Great demonstration of using a draw bore pin. Not sure I've ever seen it done on a spline joint but it makes perfect sense.
Very well shown detail from a beautiful work.
Very nice, good to see the apprentice helping.
Damn, just like everyone in "your" crowd, I'm in awe! Mad conglomerate of all world's woodworking/cabinetmaking traditions over here.
I need to make a dough board (with "bench hooks" & breadboards on 2 sides) for my wife & myself. I'll try to mimic at least few joints used here. Need only to choose which ones to use (serviceability in mind) :P
Josh, it's a freaking masterpiece!!
With Sir Charles seal of approval of course 😉.
What a craftsman, makes me want to rush to the workbench immediately and get creative.
Can't believe someone gave this a thumbs down
I guess someone likes Festools and jabber more than craftsmanship. They should go watch AvE's channel.
The most exciting part is no glue and no nails, that is true art of wood
That has to be the most chilled out cat on the planet 😄 🐈
I am new to your channel. Blown away! And at such a young age. The real deal!
Your products are amazing. I have never seen better carpenter.
Wow, thank you!
Love how your nosey cats watch everything you're doing! Enjoy your channel greatly. Keep'em coming.
The best craftsman I have ever seen, thanks
This is the best woodworking video I have scene this year. Just incredible.
I know of no other source for viewing such craftsmanship. As always, a real pleasure to see how rough lumber becomes a piece of furniture using only vintage and antique hand tools, no nails, screws or glue! Roy Underhill would be proud! No distracting verbiage and excellent editing!
A good start of the day by watching this peaceful video
That little cabinet is beautiful, and that is the calmest cat I think I have ever seen!
The kitty sure likes to be involved, I like that.
sweet...sweet,sweet.thanks Mr. C.
Wow.... beautiful craftsmanship. Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Cheers, Rob from Tasmania.
Гениальный мастер на все руки👍👍👍👍
Too funny how your cat just sat there and watched you pound that peg in😂Great stuff Mr. C
That is one Beautiful piece of work! Superb job once again.
Wonderful mate. Whenever I think the American people are without any hope I think of your work and attitude to life that you and your family live by and feel more optimistic about the future. Well done Mister Chickadee and all the best wishes for your journey onwards. Thank you.
Notguilty Yourhonor American people have huge amount of talent and faith and courage. We are not bankrupt despite what hollywood and cnn and the dregs of the media portray. It is people that try to move onto positions of power without a clue how actually do anything that make a country look bad. Craftsmen like Mr &Mrs Chick have always been the backbone of the good things in life.
You are an inspiration. If the major TV networks carried a show like yours, I would not be cancelling my Cox account next week. God blessed you with great skills.... thanks for sharing
Not sure who all is thumbing down your video, but it looks to me as though you’ve got yourself a case of what I like to call haters. Flawless work sir, cheers!
This is how a rugged simplicity looks like! You're happy man, you have I guess three cats around ))))
Nice..I appreciate your videos and look forward to them..I kept you on my subscribe list,,,Thought you were done with them..This has made my day...I'm well into my seventies and grew up in a time when tools were tools and the maker actually did the work. Thank you for sharing the experience.....
not done by a long shot!
Mr. Chickadee Glad to read that! I was also afraid the story end.
How can anybody say anything about his work, it's all so good
Of all I watch, and there are many, YOU are the true hand crafting master. I admire every second of every video you make and miss you when you're not there. Please make more - if not for money or fame do it for the pure joy you give to all of us..
Breathtakingly beautiful.
Everything.
Thank you and thank you to whoever is filming your work.
God has bestowed upon you multiple gifts. Thank you for expressing them so eloquently.
There are many excellent woodworking videos and channels on RUclips, but I feel that this is one of the few that merits the description “outstanding” in every aspect. Thank you for sharing - I’m sure your videos are an inspiration to many.
this is a true artwork and craftsmanship, mimicking the built of the Arc of Covenant.. NO NAILS NO NOISE...AWESOME!!!
Red oak is such a pain to work with- props for using it in the majority of this piece! And I'm also impressed by the glue free method of jointing boards. That's a new technique for me.
These videos inspire me, and resonate on a foundational level. Genuinely -- thank you so much for taking the time to produce them, and share your work.
Absolutely beautiful old school work. I guess someone does make things that nowadays. You are a true artist Mr. Chickadee. GOD Bless.
THIS is woodworking. Now that I've seen the light, you, Sir, have barely condemned me to rethink all my future projects without glue, nails and screws.
Nice piece of work! The cabinet and video work.
You are a true artist.
Mr. Chickadee, watching you make such a beautiful things made out of wood with manual tools is amazing! My grandfather used them too and I am pretty sure he loved his work just like you! You really know how to used those tools and the knowledge of wood and iron. I loved your video.
I didn't think quarter sawn red oak had as much character. Good to know! You left out a ton of time consuming steps. NICE JOB.
Jewelry work Master. Congratultion!
You are such an amazing craftsman it's almost ridiculous. Love your vids!
Beautiful white oak, and a beautiful build. Congratulations on your craftsmanship.Your wife is doing a great job with the camera too. About midway thru, a light showed up with it's many colors.
Wonderful! Love the dovetails. Thank you.
I see it but I still can't believe it. Incredible! The precision in measuring, cutting and trimming to get such a perfect fit in all the joints takes unbelievable skill and patience. Sir, that is a totally impressive job!
My favorite hand tool woodworking on RUclips. Feels like looking in on another time. Beautiful work.
This guy is brilliant a true craftsmen
Thank you Mr. Chikadee.
Amazing work as always. Watching you since 2016 from Brazil and applying your lessons to my craftsmanship since then, which is inspired most by you and Proenneke... The 93-year-old grandfather of my wife, in one of his visits to my home, being well acquainted to carpentry in his youth, was really amazed to see the joints and the way I was dealing with wood (someday I'll show you and he'll jump of his chair). People only believe in machines and I really get a heavy conscience when I go to buy wood and see the machines processing them for me somehow... My opinion is straight that a machine is the opposite of progress. Best regards and once more your work is really mind-changing.
Im both flatered and overjoyed to hear your comment! It reminds me of a famous quote by the Patreon Saint of woodworking, Mr Roy Underhill, "these are not the tools and techniques of the past, no, they are the tools and techniques of the FUTURE!"
Roy has 5 books on traditional hand tool woodworking and over 30 years of his TV program "the woodwrights shop" all dedicated to traditional woodworking, if you can find them I would highly recommend. The last 10 seasons of his show are available to watch free online here

Love the splines in the dovetails. Great idea!
Most people who see this will not appreciate what it takes to develop the skills and to execute this project. You did a lovely thing. Kudos
The build put me in a trance, and the brushing on of the finish nearly put me to sleep
This is food for the soul
The way that top was fitted ,and the joints will never be seen again perfection
Fantastically done.
Excellent.............Very soothing Thanks for posting
None of us will ever know, but this piece seems so well made that it could last a thousand years!!
excellent work and presentation. You are most resourceful and clever.
Just maybe your most beautiful piece yet. I love it. It's like Christmas all over again, got a new Mr. Chickadee video this morning, and it is a full piece of furniture with no glue or metal fasteners, brilliant.
Stunning.
I'm truly inspired by your craftsmanship. You're a beast!
Pas de plans disponibles ...mais ce n'est pas plus mal car ainsi, ça nous force à réfléchir et à nous retrousser les manches.
Un vrai plaisir de vous voir à l'oeuvre monsieur.
Fantastic as always, another heirloom piece people will be fighting over it a century from now.
Great work mr Chikade.

The best I've seen out there.
Very nice. Love the wafer splines to the dovetails. No glue needed there at all!!
Would love to see a tour of the shop and cabin now that you guys have settled in. Also your hand tool collection! Thanks for the inspiration.
I really like that it is joined with no glue or anything metal. Again very nicely done.
Very beautiful, I love the joinery.
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! GREAT JOB!!!
Absolutely stunning craftsmanship!
I only discovered your channel within the past week. It's amazing! Everything from the beautiful joinery work to hewing timbers, your methodical approach and attention to detail combined with the simple but high quality video production makes for a very enjoyable experience.
I grew up with a father who started out in a cabinet shop but went on to frame beautiful houses in the northeast. He taught me so much, and while I moved on to an entirely different industry, woodworking (whether box making, furniture making, cabinetry, or framing and construction) always pulls me back in. It's very relaxing, and wood is such a beautiful and unique material to work with.
Thank you for all your videos and everything you do to bring the craft back to life!
