  • Oh no! Heron steals koi fish from my pond.
I had yellow string covering most of the pond, since the herons
    last visit a year ago.
    Now I added some more.
Hopefully that will be enough to keep them away.
Herons can be quite pesky when it comes to backyard ponds and their fish. Here are some effective ways to deter herons from feasting on your finned friends:
    1. Heron Decoys:
Place plastic heron decoys near your pond. Live herons are solitary hunters and tend to avoid areas where other herons are already fishing. While this method works well initially, herons may eventually figure out that the decoys aren’t a threat.
    2. Alligator Decoys: These decoys mimic how alligators swim through water to hunt prey. Since alligators are dangerous predators to herons, placing these decoys around your pond can scare them off.
    3. Pond Netting: Cover your pond with netting. This prevents herons from physically contacting your fish. Both floating and raised netting options work well, as long as you maintain them properly.
    4. Fishing Line: Stretch fishing line across your pond in a net-like pattern. Herons dislike flying through obstacles, so this can deter them.
Remember to protect your pond fish.
    Happy pond-keeping! 🌿🐟🦢
