  • This bird eat most of my koi fish, until I installed an electric fence around it. I hope he flew south for the winter months to migrate, he sure has enough fuel in his stomach for a round trip then some….

Those electric fences are designed to keep mammals contained. The bird's thick feathers even if wet, and horny feet would have minimised the effect. To the heron, the shock would be like us accepting a few scratches when collecting blackberries or gooseberries.

At *5,000 VDC* (time: 10:44) .... it should have died, or been so fried that you might as well finish it off.
Any and All equipment I know of with that type of voltage potential carries *killer* current.
At my job, you have to get High voltage qualified by OSHA & NFPA 70E Standards for anything 600v or higher.
(Note: A car battery is only *12 VDC* and we know by touching positive to negative the seriousness of that outcome) 🙄
(I would seriously say that someone made a voltage miscalculation......) 😏

My pond was just up to their belly deep. I contrived a number of sharp spikes (pieces of driftwood with sharpened points) that sat at about the water surface. I noticed clumps of feathers on these sharp points for a few days and they didn't come back. Kingfishers were actually worse than herons because they dove in and chased the fish to their "safe" refuge. The only time my fish were truly safe was throughout the winter as long as it was cold enough to maintain a few inches of ice. A heated ring kept a small area clear to dissipate gasses. I scared my neighbours with the pots and spoons more than I ever scared them!!😆😂

I have a fishing line fence right round mine now about 800mm high and with a 100mm spacing, the ‘fence’ is right by the edge so he/she has no where to stand inside-it seems to be working.

      ROFLMAO ! He said 5000 VDC (10:44) !
That is suppose to be Ultra-high voltage that should carry enough amps to kill.
That lair is probably only pushing 50 VDC.

Any decorative pond construction company or a little research before building this pond you would have learned, minimum 3ft depth of water and about a 1 foot drop from the edge to the water. Only way to protect your fish from most predators. Cliffs and hiding holes do nothing. We as psople might get bored staring at an empty pond, but that heron knows its life and death and will stand there waiting for those fish to feel safe and come out, snatching them as they do. Only way to prevent it is to make it inaccessible to them.

Perhaps the answer is to add slow moving cheap fish to the pond and let the heron feast on them and not prize Koi. just a thought. Otherwise a 22 pellet gun.

Forget the fence charger and hook it straight to your welder. Protect your fish and cook your dinner all in a flash !!

Herons are apex predators, they eat ducklings, rabbits, rats, moles, squirrels , snakes and eels. Oh, and fish , big fish.

Vic it works fine, I just needed something to get me through the winter months. This bird did not come back... as you can see in the video they can land and take off in the water. I think the only reason they don't land in the water, is they don't want scare the fish.

Too low joule rating on that fence charger. Go with 10 or more joules. Be sure to not touch it accidentally yourself.

    though about it.
All the leg muscles are high up. The lower leg bone is like our foot bones -- no muscles.
So, the electricity goes through the leg to the ground.
Does not go through the muscles, or any of the nerves controlling the muscles.
    So, little reaction.
    Very interesting.

Very nice video, suspenseful pacing. However, my take-away is that electric fencing doesn't work for herons. I found that a monfiliment line network above and across the pond works to keep them from flying in. But if they can land and just walk over the line they will.

I HAD HOPED ! to Hear a bit of squawking, see puffs of feathers smoking, and then a smell similar to KFC.
Then a gate in the fence opening up with the neighbors filing in with salad dishes n beer - For a taste of something similar to chicken. I'll bring some Beatles, Eagles , ZZ-Top and Doobie Bros music too . . IF That's Okay ??

Run nylon fishing line across the pond spaced 20 inches apart. Doesn't look too bad, protects fish and repels heron.
