The Yata Lock

- The Yata Lock was a notorious control beat down used in the game many many years ago. This Lock ultimately lead to the banning of the card, Yata-Garasu. The whole point of the Yata Lock was to deplete ones opponents field and hand and had of all resources, (This could be done quickly with the help of Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End) followed by summoning Yata-Garasu and attacking with it. Once damage has been dealt to a player via Yata-Garasu, its effect would cause the opponent to skip their next Draw Phase. The opponent would then have to start their next turn with no cards to use in their field or their hand, forcing them to pass their turn. On your next turn, you would simply re-summon Yata-Garasu and attack yet again causing the opponent to skip their next Draw Phase again, thus locking them out of doing any moves for the rest of the duel.

Story time:
Alright so it's been a long time(2004) but I did consistently beat Yata/Envoy decks back when they were the best deck. I made this deck to celebrate after winning a regional with the Meta BLS/Chaos/Yata deck. You see, for a time BLS and Emperor Dragon were restricted but DMOC was not yet; and Painful Choice was still also only restricted. My deck was of course Tripple DMOC(way before the errata) w/ Monster Reborn, Premature B, Painful, Graceful, MoF(Semi), Apprentice Magician etc etc etc. I didn't need Envoy or BLS or Yata as I could fairly consistently bring out 3 DMOCS. I can comment the list if anyone cares.
Also during the Yata era but before Chaos stuff was out(maybe 2003) I had an amazing machine deck that never lost to Yata even once. Limiter Removal was at 3 and I was lucky enough to own 3 Mechanical Chasers(TP1 was new still) and also figured out Magical Scientist could bring out 3 Machine Dragons and they can all attack over a Reaper on the Nightmare which you Creature Swapped to them of course. I really thrived competitively during these YGO eras and made a lot good friends. I still have my Millennial Puzzle Trophy too. I'm thinking about playing in April again but not sure yet.

a redundant thing to say by today's standards. This combo cannot be depended upon if ANY OF YOU are prepared to mention classic sacky cards that REQUIRE luck to be on your side in drawing them. Plus even if you do go 2nd as you'd like, good luck expecting to pull off this combo without getting to send cards to YOUR GY for search effects, playing thru negates or even player interaction. It worked for it's era cuz of the lack of strategies available but now? Uhm,.. Bring it on boomer? 🤷🏻

It's funny how most players try to say they always survived the lock even though it's was pretty much a 100% sure loss... You guys realise that Yata isn't the only monster that was attacking in this lock, right ?

Today on May 17th 2022 Yata Garasu came off the banlist to limited. Being one of the longest banned cards up there with Raigeki and other classics.

This has gotta be one of my favorite old school locks of the time. Up there with Magical Scientist.
Damn. I remember just over 10 years ago when I was in middle school, I bought this one Yu-Gi-Oh! book for 2005 that covered the anime and popular cards the pros were using. Granted, the card images they had were enlarged so much you couldn't make out what the text was so I couldn't really see what Yata's effect was, but the pros were saying how before it was banned it should have just been considered an instant win condition. I was always curious as to how a level two monster could be so crippling, until now. Thanks for showing us the highly infamous Yata Lock!
I never scooped when I got yata-locked. Why? Usually when the combo was done, it was deep within the duel. Yata only has 200, so by the time the lock was set, my LP was high enough to where my opponent would deck out before I lost LP (I was big on protecting my LP back when this was legal).
"Oh darn! I got yata-locked! It's okay. Keep drawing, my friend."
Then they can just pull out bls or chaos sorcerer and do extra damage
Prophetless772 Well yes, the Yata Lock is only countered by Decking Out, but then again, you can have a powerful 2000 atk photon thrasher, or alexandrite dragon before your last 10-1 cards run out.

since this was common on chaos decks, you were on a timer till they got BLS or any of the other chaos monsters in the hand
if you were relaying solely on yata for lp damage past CED you like wasting time

original dcr ioc remove from play yata-lock deck was the most fun ive ever had in a card game.. i won so many tournaments i love this card

What if your has a card like reborn tengu which says if it's sent to the grayard you can special summon another copy of it to the filed

Summon Chaos Emperor Dragon, effect.
Veiler? Breakthrough Skill? Fiendish Chain? Herald? Even Memory Loss or Divine Wrath. The card is broken but there are answers for days to the Yata-Lock. Some of those cards are viable for a return, maybe the Envoy of the End alone or Yata alone. Or maybe even both since we don't have witch or Sangan.
Yata was a beast, coming from a traditional duelist, i still use him.

One of the if not the Greatest Combo Decks of all time which gave birth to the original YGO Banlist and for years to come.
You gotta love the Yata's effect. My cousin won a used Super Smash Brother and $20 store credit from a local comic/card store tournament. The other guy revealed that he had a trap hole on the field. Luckily he couldn't activate it.
I remember the last time I entered a tournament, I beat my homie with a BLS, CHAOS Emperor Dragon and Yata, blasted him into kingdom come. I remember people would literally smash the yata when locked, some even through it across the room. I traded an inject fairy lily for it back in the day. Back when trading for cards and dueling for cards was my grind ha. The games evolved so much since then, glad to see many years after many folks still enjoy the game.

Yata Garasu What a blast from the past. When i was into yugioh when I was like eleven, like most eleven year olds I just wasn't quite fully understanding of the games so i Never made it past like 2 rounds at my local tourneys, However i remember quite the satisfatory feeling when i beat adults with yatalock and they just feel so bad cause its an eleven year old doing this to them after they spent so much money and time into a game XD
Painfully childhood memories, I going to have nightmares tonight of Yata. lol

I used to Yata Lock plenty of my opponents. Back during those days, Confiscation, Delinquent Duo and Forceful Sentry also came in handy. And Don Zaloog.

in all honesty if sangan, witch, chaos emp, and painful choice stay banned then yata should be able to come back imho. He really can't run any major shenanigans now
Man. I've been looking back into yugioh a bit just to have a deck and be able to play with my nephew when he wants because he really enjoys this game and I remember most of the cards. I think I stopped before the Yata lock but all of the rest of these cards I played. Pot of Greed, Raigeki, Heavy Storm, Feather Duster, Magician of Faith. I basically played a beatstick deck with all the good stuff plus some hand control cards like Delinquent Duo and Graceful Charity. The thing that I was proud of at the time was my personal tweak on the decks that people were playing and that was running 3 copies of Penguin Soldier lol Not even a great ploy looking back but my thought was just to keep bouncing their annoying shit and recurring it by also bouncing itself back to my hand and clearing the way for my Giant Orc and Mad Dog. Did pretty well against the decks in my school who were mostly running the old-school beatdown decks.

wouldn't it be possible to combine the yata with the trap robbin goblin? a little slower to get rid of the cards in your opponents hand but combined with raigeki and feather duster you could accomplish the same thing with fewer cards and requirements.

I loved the yata lock when I played chaos many moons ago. There is one card that can throw a wrench into the yata lock and that is sinister serpent when it was playable.
I remember pulling this card out of a packet and everyone was freaking out. I, at that time, wasn't sure what the hype was about, but then when my friends explained it, I started freaking out. This was a really great card if you know how to use it.
To everyone saying "it's just 200ATK so I just wait it out hurrr durrrr", you played against scrubs who couldnt build a deck with free selection to everything. The idea of Yata is to card stun the opponents hand while you draw to special summon. Yata by itself is just the keystone of 99% of it's plays, the player still needs to set up the win.

ahh, i remember getting Yata for my birthday when i was like ten and it was the best. Idk about the game anymore or even in 2013, but at the time, i thought while he was OP, it wasn't to the point where i thought he should be banned.

This is not yata foult it really is chaos emperor dragon clearing every thin an dumping the hand that the reason it work. Pain Full choice is also to blame as it set up the grave so well

When I first started playing you could have 3 monster reborns and no one batted an eye. The first time I ever made it to the finals in my local tournament I lost 1-2 both losses were from this combo
I think if I took out my old deck from when I still played Yugioh half the cards in the deck would be banned now lol

A part of chaos emperor dragon is that fir each card sending to the graveyard with hi effect inflicts 300 lp to your opponent. So you dont need 40 turns to win.

So I have a question regarding the witch of the black forest. The move you show here in the video would be illegal back in the day. According to the effect of WOTBF you can cannot activate cards or use the effects of the creature you choose to put in your hand. Therefore you wouldn't be able to use Yata and his effect that turn. You would have to let your opponent draw 1 card then you could summon him yata the next turn.
What do you think? According to what WOTBF says for his effect I believe that this combo is not a OTK.
Witch and Sangan got an errata. The old effect was if this card is sent from the the field to the graveyard add one monster with 1500 ATK(sangan) DEF(witch) or less from your deck to your hand.

oh how I miss the yata. I would have loved to still have that card at least just for memorabilia. It got stolen from me during the era of the yata lock. Heck, I would love to have like most of them cards that were so cool back in the day.

I entered a minor tournament, some kids made it however it was after hate was banned yet this kid used this on me. Eventually I remembered I had a negate attack on the field. Here's how stupid the ref was, he thought that mystical space typhoon negated negate attack. It makes sense when you realize the ref was the punks brother that I was dueling. To this day I want to punch them simply for being cheats, ruining the spirit of the game that day because the first guy I dueled was awesome even in defeat. I just got paired with the cheating brat on my second match.

Chaos End sends all cards on the field to the graveyard. How did you have a set negate attack after this? You say the boy cheated, and this seems a bit hypocritical of you.

It is probably cause you said some kid used this on me and end is used in the video so there is the assumption end was used on you and end destroys the field . doesn't mean negate couldn't be set later and MST could stop negate depending on when it was used since negate can only be used in battle phase

most ppl eventually draw a special summon method that makes them able to inflict more than 200 damage a turn, i.e black luster soilder, premature burial, call of the haunted, etc

Played back then, been Yata locked. Can't accurately express my "opinion" in polite company, but you can probably figure it out.
my main thing about this was.... u would deck yourself out b4 u would take away your opp LP... your only pinging for 200 ATK. and since yata required your normal summon what else would u do???
and CED vs JD would be EPIC, they're like brothers lol
This card doesn't seem as powerful but I think if played right could lock your opponent. I uses Gravekeeper's and think about if I was to play this card with royal tribute, but I think over all the card should be OK at one.
i usually have waboku for that ocacion and saved me like 80% of the time
In fact, any cards that have effects in the graveyard can break the lock (ie, zombies). Yata is so old though, that back then there weren't a whole lot of cards that had effects that could be used while they were in the grave. In conjunction with all of the Yata-Lock support cards being banned, I don't see Yata being much of a threat anymore, nor would it be played all that much.
I remember trying to make the combo end the game faster for those pesky few who didn't want to scoop by including Horn of the Unicorn. That way, every time Yata would return to my hand, Horn would get topdecked and I'd draw it next turn. So I, effectively, had a 900 ATK beatstick.
As for the combo of preventing an opponent from doing anything at all, that is to say, a Draw Phase Lock, one exists in the form of abusing Fenrir in a Spirit deck with Black Garden. I do believe Yugioh4realmen made a video on that. It was funny.

No options? you forget some cards can activate from the graveyard so if CED sent some cards that have this ability then its possible to some degree get out of the Yatalock.
Maybe so but I was still playing the game back when the ban was first placed so there was a small handful even back then.
i think they might one day for one format since their four for the year now but you never know but i miss this lock so much and using it on my friends and watching them get pissed,didnt like it happening to me tournys but i did like when i could pull it off xD
i miss the days of the yata lock cause the game was less complicated
so, since like all the card of the combo set are banned, why are yata-garasu even banned right now? it's pretty damn hard to make it work without chaos dragon, sngan and with anyways
DoesNotExist305 +Keitaro Urashima activate foolish burial, send sky scourge norleras, summon phantom of chaos eff blow up, find a way to get easy yata by putting on top deck with lavalval or spell card and put yata on top then blow up field summon yata attack
