- Actor Daniel Dae Kim sits down with Ronny Chieng to discuss his role in new Broadway play “Yellow Face.” They talk about meta aspects of the show - which is based on true events and stars Kim as playwright David Henry Hwang who accidentally casts a white actor for an Asian part - as well as its relevance in present-day Hollywood, and the importance of Asian performers playing Asian characters. #DailyShow #DanielDaeKim #Broadway

DDK lived here in Hawaii while he was doing Hawaii 5-0. He was adopted as local as he assimilated to the culture and exuded the Aloha spirit. But it was no problem with him because he is genuinely a grounded, generous, thoughtful person to the core. He will be successful and respected wherever he goes or whatever he does. Big Daniel Dae Kim fan. He did lose his sun tanned complexion tho now living on the east coast. 😀🤙🏼
So happy to read this ❤
Thank you for your insights and your post
He lived there since LOST
@@Tweek08 I stand corrected.
Anybody else read this while doing the Hawaii Five-O theme song in their head?
A rational, reason-based conversation about race in film? What a crazy proposal! Seriously, this was a great interview. Daniel Dae Kim is very insightful.
Exactly! Feel like narrowing casting down by country, as opposed to larger regional race, makes things tougher. But it’s definitely an interesting discussion.
Expect a "this is political correctness gone mad" arguments from certain elements of the media. The fact is, questioning this sort of thing isn't new. I remember talking about Breakfast at Tiffany's with a friend and her mother walked in and told us to stop, telling us how it should not be a respected film. She had taken her mother to see it at the cinema when it came out and when Mickey Rooney appeared, her mother stood up, grabbed her and marched out. Apparently, 2 others followed. Even then, people (inc some critics) knew his reprehensible portrayal was wrong.
@@vickiep4217 Yes, there have always been people who have stood up to discrimination, going back through all of history. The "that's how things used to be" argument is never a valid justification.
Exactly! i’m a 41 year old black american who worked in entertainment in multiple countries for a few decades and this question comes up in casting a lot. i live in Asia now and have worked in entertainment here for almost 20 years. I was preparing myself to be disappointed by Daniel’s hot take but was shocked by how much sense it made. i’m definitely using that answer going forward. Even in Africa, where i work sometimes, this question comes up - can different ethnic groups play each other.
@@vickiep4217err why?
So refreshing to hear an actor speak with real wisdom, intellect, and clarity.
The one person that clapped for Miss Saigon 😶🌫️
😂😂😂
I came to the comments sections for this! 😂 Their friend probably stopped them like, “No… not now.”
💀
I wonder if Asian actors ever ask Jonathan Pryce about it.
Daniel and Ronnie, so much talent and cuteness together I almost can't handle it! 😍
I want to handle both.
The perfect combination of thoughtfulness, clarity, and cheekbones.
"The sharpest cheek-bones on television!"
Mmmmmmm jawline 🤩
🤤
Daniel is 56 years old....and my mind is blown.
😮 I was thinking, is this the actor that played that Korean guy in Lost? It looks like him but he should be older by now. Then Ronnie mentioned Lost and my mind was blown.
My Japanese girlfriend is around the same age and she's beautiful.
I know. Dude looks maybe 35.
my dad is 68 and everyone think he is in late 40ies haha
people don't believe my mom is retired, because she looks like 40 y.o. as well 😅
Asian don’t raisin
Wow, Daniel has an ENORMOUS presence. I bet he can really fill a room with his emotions.
It’s so nice to discover that an actor you admire is actually a lovely, down to earth kind of guy. Great interview, learned a lot.
He is so beautiful 😍 I'll have to watch this several more times to hear what he actually said ❤
Even though I personally don’t know a lot about this actor, I’m going to follow him more because he’s so well spoken and honest.
He was in Lost, he was excellent! So compelling.
And Angel.
Hawaii 5-0
Live action Fire Lord Ozai
@@shahidmirza1138 wolfram and hart!
I was introduced to Daniel Dae Kim, not from his character in _Lost,_ but from his stellar portrayal of telepathic first officer Lt. John Matheson in the _Babylon 5_ spinoff _Crusade._
Which made it even more hilarious for me to see everyone's shocked reactions when his character in _Lost_ revealed he spoke fluent English!
Same!
the key element for Asian actors is " is there a language requirement for the role?"
Let's look at Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi), an American born Japanese actor who never had an accent, who was the first Asian to be nominated for an Academy Award. He also played a Chinese emperor in Mulan. IMO, if the actor can nail the role, then they should have the job.
Jack Soo from Barney Miller was funny
Daniel Dae Kim is a great actor.
You can really see the respect that Ronnie has for this man.
Can see him blush every time Daniel lauds his work
love Ronny Chieng, more of him please 🙏
Yes, More Please. 😊
Same! He’s hilarious!
This man ages like fine wine
Asian don't raisin
Loved his character in Lost
Have a cluckity cluck cluck day!
Me too, I even loved him way back on Angel.
It took until a few minutes into this interview, and a google to place where I knew him from before I realised who he was. LOST was such a great show, and I hope something as game-changing will come along again
@@ejslade4299I totally forgot he was on Angel. Thanks for reminding me
Everyone else: Daniel Dae Kim from TV!
Me: Johnny Gat from Saints Row.
I can't wait to see more of him as Fire Lord Ozai in Netflix's "Avatar" 🔥🔥🔥
I hope "charisma on command," the youtuber would want to use this clip in his upcoming content as a great example of the way to put a pleasant spin on touchy subjects during the conversation. The way he states his experience, gives examples and positive visions, then wraps everything up with the compliment to the host in such a poised manner is just remarkable to watch.
Great Job Ronny Chieng!!!!! If you read any of these comments, know we want more of you.😊
i just fell in love with Ronny Chieng
TDS is really hitting it out of the park with their new format. The wide range of perspectives is exactly what this country needs.
Hearing Ronnie said DDK being a mentor to a lot of them making me 🥺 He's aspirational
Hey Daniel, don't forget Pat Morita. He paved the way for all the Asian comedians who came after, including Cho and Ronnie and the rest.
Great actor you need more roles sir❤❤
Ronny really respects that man. ❤
In their discussion of Asian comedians, I immediately thought of Pat Morita, who was a comedian long before (around the same time as another legend and comedian, Redd Foxx) he became indelibly linked to his character Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid.
This guy, Daniel Dae Kim, he's such a great actor and a person. I loved his work on Hawaii Five-0. I absolutely loved that show.
Love Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu ❤️🌹❤️
Wow!! I absolutely love this actor!! I remember watching him as a kid. He looks great!!
Excellent interview, Ronny, thank you.
Great discussion between two great performers. Love Daniel & Ronnie! ❤
I love award winning, Ronnie C🎉. Don’t forget Henry Cho, and Johnny Yune,
I loved his character in Hawaii Five O!! ❤❤
💯❤
I love Ronny’s approach to humor - clever and dry. If that is Asian humor, I will take more please ❤❤❤
Dude, stope with the stereotyping, I realize what you are responding to
He is like yes we are funny
And then you were like yes : this small type of funny
you just stereotyped
More Asians on the screen is an important step but we need to have Asians just playing characters where race is not a part of the narrative. Like, just a random divorced guy from Colorado called Pete.
Lotta love for Ronny!!❤❤❤
Daniel has been one of my favorite actors for many MANY years! (Plus he's gorgeous!) He's such a sweet, intelligent, thoughtful person, just lovely ❤🎉
Bobby Lee's going to take it personal he didn't get mentioned with those Asian comics.
What an insightful and educational interview.
Daniel is magnificent. Ronny is wonderful so loosen up buddy when people applaud you!
He seems so awkward with compliments 🤣
Lol and Daniel is just like so vulnerable and real - Ronny is locked up - arms crossed - trying to protect his self-deprecating humour armour
Hollywood did that with Indians in movies - white people played the Indians in westerns
First time I saw DDK was his role on Star Trek Voyager as an alien in the episode Blink of an Eye. He was amazing in the role and the episode was one of my favourite sci-fi stories ever. Very high concept and if you like Interstellar, you'll immediately see the similarities.
Dang, Ronny is hilarious. I think his accent makes him even funnier.
Daniel Dae Kim, intellectual, intelligent, great laugh and flipping gorgeous! ♡♡♡
he is so well spoken. what a badass
That's probably not the compliment you thought it should be, given that race/ethnicity in the USA was being discussed...
@@primalconvoyexactly
I absolutely adored Miss Saigon in high school! Lived in the UK for several years after high school and got to see it in London. The evacuation scene is still one of the most amazing scenes I've ever seen on stage. This was a fun interview, and a worthy subject. I do recognize differences when it comes to Western Asians, Eastern Asians, and South-eastern Asians and have become annoyed when people are cast to play a particular ethnic person over another as if it doesn't matter. Not because this individual is incapable of carrying the role, but mainly because I know they were picked because society just doesn't care! It's all the same to them. But if we can get to a point where we do care, but are open to exploring the idea that ethnicity is important but not necessarily in this particular role then hopefully things will change.
Very sharp! Since Lost, he didn’t get older!
He's so lovely.
A new 'odd couple' sitcom coming to Apple TV next Fall starring Ronnie Cheng and Daniel Dae Kim.
😂😂 I’d watch!
Dude looks amazing for 56
Bro killed it in lost
He's so well spoken and has the best smile.
funny asians in the 80: first that comes to my mind: Jackie Chan!
I saw an episode recently of a French show called HIP made in 2021 where the main actress actually stuck chopsticks in her mouth like walrus tusks and spoke in a Chinese accent. My jaw dropped and my first thought was this show would never air and would get cancelled.
"I'm doing it right now" cracked me up. 😂😂🤣
Great segment! You two rock!
Daniel not trying to talk himself out of any roles
It’s the same with whites. English actors will play an Irish character. A German actor plays an American. Back in the day Charley Chan movies were very funny.
DDK much love to my Korean-American bro
Ethnic authentic casting -- It's a complicated question and there are many considerations and perspectives. It is cool that people are talking about it.
Bobby Lee should be included in that list. MadTV
Who would’ve thought Johnny Gat would be so well spoken and erudite
I want more of Ronny Chieng, I will only watch if he is on daily show
I'm old enough to remember the TV series Kung Fu from when I was a kid. I loved it! Thinking back, I was pretty sure that David Carradine was not Asian, and he is not. He did adopt an affinity for and practice of the martial arts, and he eventually visited the monastery that was his home of study in the story behind the series. the head monk said he was pleased by how Carradine had represented and promoted the martial arts. So at least the non-Asian actor showed some humility in spite of his culturally appropriated casting.
Carradine got the role in part because he looked like he had some asian ancestory. The character had a white American father and Chinese mother.
Love the questions DDK raises...
Ronnie is a national treasure
He is just awesome at everything.
self deprecating humor about taped eyes on DDKs part, gotta love it.
“I’m doing it right now” 😂
The question should be : why can't any race play any characters base on merits, not appearances!! My eight years old in 1990s, had a role in third grade playing Queen Elizabeth. We used to live in a town in NY where 80 % are whites. The teacher, after several attempts to try to replace her for a minor role, could not let go of her almost perfect intonation of a British accent. (she did have talents on imitating any accents since 5 years old, and that's one reason she works for major broadcasting station now). But still those little tots classmates were protesting, " who ever heard of an Asian American Queen Elizabeth?" ! America had a long way to go to see a person in spirit, not just outside appearances!
I. Y. Yunioshi is a fictional character in Blake Edwards's 1961 American romantic comedy film Breakfast at Tiffany's, which George Axelrod adapted for the movie based on the 1958 novella of the same title by Truman Capote. The character in the film is significantly different from the character as presented in Capote's original novella, and the film version of Mr. Yunioshi, as portrayed by Mickey Rooney, has been the subject of extensive critical commentary and review since its theatrical release due to its use of ethnic stereotypes.
I physically cannot bring myself to watch that movie - as much as I want to - because I am revolted and get angry as soon as I see that character.
I think if ur portrayal is accurate then ur real ethnic origin is insignificant...casting calls shouldn't even divulge ur background imo
Full disclosure I'm half Korean Chinese moved to NYC...i root for all Asians in screen! Thanks Daniel for pioneering!
Hawaii 5-0 was never the same for me after Daniel Dae Kim & Grace Park were not paid what they deserved. But, doesn’t seem like he wasted any time moving on to bigger & better.
Awesome material as always, well done ❤
Agreed.
DDK is awesome in Yellowface. I would go back and see it again.
I remember how the casting of Memoirs of a Geisha was really controversial. On a related note, I think that blackface and brownface still happens in other countries. I saw a Vice episode that said some traditional operas in China still use blackface.
Excellent interview! Top tier content!
Great interview. Love Ronnie & Daniel ❤
Love Daniel Dae Kim
It's nice to see him succeed.
First time I became fascinated by his acting was back on Crusade, the Babylon 5 spinoff that died a death by a thousand cuts courtesy of the network's meddling.
Loved Daniel in LOST! 🏝️
Can we get a show or movie with these two guys already!!!
I believe it should be permissible for any actor to play any role. I also don't believe any actor should be discriminated against due to their race, ethnicity, gender, ect. Acting is just that, acting. I am not an actor, but if I were, I would relish the chance to challenge my acting abilities by portraying a character that is vastly different than I am in real life. Be it physically, verbally, psychologically, or otherwise. The bottom line to me is discrimination is bad.
❤ I have long admired Daniel Day Kim. Terrific interview. ❤
The term 'Yellow Face' is a misnomer. The proper term should be 'Golden Face'. Remember this always.
It's a wonderful development. Maybe one day everybody can play anybody. Hamlet played by an Asian man. That's freedom.❤
Randomly bumped into Daniel in two different countries. Seems like a cool dude
I KNEW I recognised his face! LOST was such a great show, but sad that I haven't followed his career since. Would love to his play made into a movie or series where I could watch it
Great interview❤
he looks younger that he did on Lost. how?! you go, Mr Kim!
To the topic that Asians are not funny... I think we generally have a strict upbringing and high expectations to be taken serious to get respect. I love seeing humorous Asians and giving us permission to have fun, be funny & laugh.
Both specificity in casting and open gender and race blind casting are valid approaches to creating performance art.
What I loved most in this interview, after the brilliant content, was watching these two embarass each with praise... it honestly melted my heart.
Jin!!! Seeing him here, he could’ve been a great multiverse version of Tyler Hoechlin Superman.
I still see him from Lost. one of my favorite shows
I love the episodes he did on Voyager and Charmed.
