    "Is you ready Ski King?"
    E. C. Beatty - Ski King lyrics
    Some people say
    This story is false
    But others say it's true
    Fear not, old Ski King
Cause, buddy, I believe in you
    The sun was a-shining
    The water, it was smooth
Ski King was in perfect form
    Daddy-O was in the groove
The pink Cadillac came sliding in
With a big boat on the rear
Ski King stepped out on the sand
Said, the great Ski King is here
Ski King fastened on his skis
    Fifty horses were getting warm
The crowd let out a mighty roar
    Let's see that perfect form
He strutted to the water's edge
He waved back to the crowd
He pounded his chest like Tarzan would
    And that made Daddy-O proud
Daddy-O backed up close to shore
The rope was a perfect throw
Ski King tied it around his arm
And yelled, let her go, Daddy-o
    Daddy-O opened that throttle wide
Sounded like a swarm of bees
All of that power from the fifty horses
Made Ski King lose his skis
Poor Ski King was flying low
Like a porpoise up and down
    They circled the lake
    About four or five times
    Daddy-O never looked around
    Daddy-o was driving that boat
Ski King was drinking the lake
    People were yelling at Daddy-o
Stop the boat, for goodness sake
    Daddy-O finally stopped the boat
    He pulled Ski King inside
Poor Ski King had plenty of water
But he sure had lost his pride
Now, the moral of this story
Keep your neck of the noose
Be careful not to grab ahold
Of something you can't turn loose
Of something you can't turn loose
Of something you can't turn loose

i was a kid in early elementary school when this came out.....it was a great song and we loved it.....it has been at least 65 years since i heard it....so typical of the simplicity of those days....little if any music and just a good beat in the background....no fake electronic sounds and voice enhancments....it is simply great....i wish we could get back to real musical art again

@@zmov1 me and my friends loved it when we used to smoke together. My dad had a cousin back in the day who had a boat and water ski and apparently refereed to himself as the ski king!:p

My dad heard about this story in 1950's from some boys that saw the actual event in North Carolina and told him about it the next day. Two or three weeks later the song came out. He'd been telling me about this for years before I ever heard the song.

This is a classic...my friend Jon played this 45 when we were kids in 1972. I remember this as part of good times and things, This song is a great reminder of how 50 hp was big then and 50 years later 350 hp is norm.... poor ski king would not tie the ropes around is arms today. Go Ski King ... a North Carolina Legend!

I came across this post by hazard. I recognized the label and then I remembered this 45 from my childhood. On weed, I actually see the great ski king going up and down in a perfect oscillation drinking the lake. It has a Super6 cartoon feel.

Don't know how I got here....was looking for how to chicasee a fricken....(from Cinderfella). Always loved that line. Well....Ski King was popular in Portsmouth ,Va. back in the dark ages when I was but a mere child. Supposedly happened by the West Norfolk Bridge in Portsmouth. But as some have stated it was in N.C. at Lake Norman, which I believe is most likely the case. West Norfolk is a branch of the Elizabeth River, and in later years when I was older I always wondered about the lake part. A good ole song from yesteryear.....and I STILL have the record ! Gee...if I keep it another 50 years it will probably be worth...50 cents !

Thanks for giving us this long-lost little gem. It was a small hit in the Atlanta area in 1959. Strange but I have looked for it on youtube for years and all of a sudden here it is.

This was a true story. It happened on Lake Norman near Charlotte,NC. Lake Norman was a man made lake built in 1959.The record was also a monster there in Sept. `59. It sold 140,000 copies in two weeks there according to First Pressings,The History of Rhythm & Blues,Vol. 9, 1959

It hails from the late 50s/early 60s, days of segregation, and is making fun of Negroes (imho) among just being a comical song.
