Shawna Forester Smith says a life-threatening experience at a Winnipeg hospital led her to start a petition to draw attention to the state of health care in Manitoba.
Forester Smith, 41, was diagnosed with gastroparesis and pseudo-obstruction in 2009. It means that her intestines don't work properly and she gets her nutrition through an intravenous line.
While she is currently a resident of the chronic care unit at the long-term care facility Deer Lodge Centre, her health condition requires her to frequent hospitals for emergency care, with the last time occurring over three days in the first weekend of March, she said.
"I started going septic [and] into shock, so they called an ambulance and I was taken to the Grace Hospital," Forester Smith said.
"And what I experienced was just awful."

The people that work in the hospital are miserable because of being overworked and toxic management

the problem with medicare and lack of doctors now is the lack of available education. it has proven the bariers that have come up because they charge people an arm and a leg to get an education and that had made it unaffordable for those who would like to become doctors to do so because they cannot afford to go to medical school. it used to be that nurses were trained on the job and the hospitals would also train doctors instead of this get an overpriced education nonsense. it has led to rich kids who's mommy and daddy can afford it to pay for their education and burn out because these so called doctors and nurses are only dedicated to earning a paycheaque not to their actual patients in many cases. i have seen good doctors and bad doctors and the good ones stick around and are dedicated to their patients the rest well they seem to not stick around. maybe it is time we remove the bariers to medical education and this way we can have some well trained doctors and nurses without the high cost of medical schooling and get those wait times down and open up more hospitals

I agree with you. It would be so much more beneficial for the staff and the patients.

I was at the HSC ER a couple months ago for my wife. We were there for over 20 hours. At one point there was a man who noticeably was gasping for air then past out and if it wasn't for the kind people beside him who went up to the unauthorized area to find a nurse, the unconscious man who was rushed in may not have made it...

This is a hospital management issue. They see our hospitals as businesses instead of being providers of necessary medical services. The problem has gotten worse over the years and now everyone just excepts the horrible treatment. It’s time to start writing and phoning these managers! I’m calling Grace Hospital for answers.

I was just at the Grace ER yesterday March 20th, 2024 I was there from 6:45AM until about noon the wait was long but not that long considering it is usually 8 - 10+ hours, the triage nurses were nice enough, and the nurse who saw me for my medical issue was also very kind I have no complaints what so ever I actually like the Grace and would go back there if I had another medical scare (hopefully not).

Grace Hospital is a horrid hospital. Elderly mother was in Emergency for 26 hours and was sent home after examination with undiagnosed pneumonia. Was back in Grace Emergency the next day. She could have easily died of the undiagnosed pneumonia.

Manitoba hospitals are basically fourth world hospitals.

No it's not. Your personal experience doesn't mean the hospital is horrid. All emergency rooms make mistakes.

The hospitals are making way too many mistakes because of staffing shortages. This has been going for many yrs now. I know it's all about the money but it definitely has to be fixed asap.

These issues have been know for the past few years. An online petition isn't going to change things.

Get in line! Times are difficult and urgent for all... there are no guarantees. Selfcare is the best care.
