    Very Nice Lesson and yes Malcolm main guitar part was played using a mutron Bi-Phase pedal. I call it a pedal, but it was more like a small arp synth with patch cards that were placed on top of the controls to get preset sounds. It only has a mono output so the main signal was panned Left and a 1/16 delay of that sound was panned Right. The bass sound was indeed a Roland TB 303. The water droplet noises were created with Edwyn tapping his jackplug into his amp on a metal doorstop on the studio floor which was then flanged. Edwyns amp was a Fender Twin with reverb on.
    The drums on the track are actual drum loops created from Zeke playing for a couple of hours then cut up on a multitrack to create the song. If you want any more info let me know.
    Martin Hayles (Producer)

    Awesome vid for one of the greatest 80s track. What a great guitar riff that is understandably overshadowed by the 303 bass line. In case people are unaware, the Roland 303 that produced the bass is an iconic instrument for techno and is responsible for the sound of the genre "acid techno." But it wouldn't attain that iconic status until years after it was first produced and it was widely considered a failure or novelty when it was first released. You really won't see many uses of the 303 with a guitar like this track by Orange Juice and "Rip It Up" is actually one of the first widely-known uses of a 303 on a recording, only beat by the Indian artist Charanjit Singh who used on a recording one year earlier.

    Saw these in 83 in Victoria Park Hackney along with the Joboxers (Boxerbeat). In 78 I saw The Clash, Xray Specs and Tom Robinson also in Vicky Park, and to this day I can still remember and see exactly what tree I was up :-).
    In 98 also over the park I saw Paul Weller and Ian Dury but by that time id given up on trees and just found a nice hill to stand on :-)

    Hi Adrian, love the video lesson. Word directly from Malcolm in discussion on Facebook on the guitar effect this morning is "Guitar is through a '70s Mutron bi-phase peddle. Split the signal into 2 which were both phased separately." And word from David is the bass line is played on a Roland TB-303. Hope this is of interest. All the best G

    Thanks again Adrian! I thought the world had forgotten Orange Juice. Their second album was very different to the first, but I love both, and the switch to a funky vibe with the new lineup. I saw them at the Liverpool university student union in 1982. They were great, but have to admit my disappointment at NOT going to see another up & coming band that same week, rather than Edwyn and crew, may have reduced my enthusiasm. The gig I missed? U2 😖.

      I think you would be happily surprised about how much this song is known by younger music nerds, at least from my experience in the states. I think maybe around 2010, possibly from a a reissue or something, but there seemed like there was a critical re-appraisal or rediscovery for Orange Juice and a lot of music blogs or sites from that time were writing up there impact or place in post-punk or new wave history. Plus, their use of the Roland 303 has helped them gain exposure to all the techno kids who blinders to a lot of music that did not directly influence the electronic genre. The kind that will tell you about how influential Kraftwerk is but if you ask them about Can or Neu! they can only give you a blank stare.

    My favourite Orange Juice song mainly because in amongst the Chic they name check punk rock legends Buzzcocks and throw in a guitar line from Boredom. My favourite Scottish guitarist from that era Stuart Adamson who was both punk The Skids and post punk Big Country. Also first time I have heard a guitarist talk in drum terminology. If only all guitarists used terminology like the last note of the sixteenth note pattern drummers and guitarists would get on much better :)

    Superb vid and guitar lesson. I'm sure your inundated with requests, but if you get a chance can you do a lesson on 'I've Never Met a Girl Like You Before' by Edwyn, im particularly keen to learn the 7 chords he struts down and up the neck. I think they are Cm Fm Gm Cm Fm Cm x2 in different places around the neck. There are some good vidoes on all the other parts (plus solo) but not these chords the way Edwyn does it. Cheers.

  • @flimbar
    @flimbar 4 года назад +1

    I really struggle with those chords on the high 3 or 4 strings where you have to barre the B & high E string whilst having your thumb over the top to mute the lower strings. I can only seem to barre with my thumb pressing against the back of the neck, so when I bring my thumb over I lose the barre, I can't get my first finger to lay flat, I always end up with either the B or the high E muted.

    • @marklewis1337
      @marklewis1337 4 года назад +1

      I find it impossible, so far. I've found a sort of half-full-barre, where you press hard on the high strings and just rest on the low strings works, but it's not ideal. Keep practising I guess but I think my thumb ain't long enough!
