I'm really glad this Popeye movie is getting another chance with Genndy still on board. As excited as I am with Sony Pictures Animation's upcoming lineup, they shouldn't have canceled it in the first place. The animation has way more energy and life than in anything The Emoji Movie ever had.

Grey Delisle is actually also known as Grey Griffin if you didn't know btw. She voice acts for Azula in the Last Airbender, Mandy from The Grim Adventures, Vicky from Fairly Odd Parents and some other more various cartoon and game characters that are quite popular. Considering those roles, I don't think she's a "little less prevalent" in my opinion lol.
It's interesting how archaic Popeye is, since one of the most iconic and widely-appealing video game characters ever, Mario, took inspiration from him in terms of character design.
I think nintendo wanted to make a popeye game and once they didn't get the rights, they released Donkey Kong while the popeye IP also released a game later on which was very like donkey kong (with some diner dash mixed in).
Yeah! And he only got like a couple of games. You'd think they'd pull a Battletoads and make a platformer/beat 'em up or something, but it's mostly arcade games and a weird foot racing game for the GBA.

My disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined when I learned this movie was thrown away in favour of the emoji movie, but now my happiness is immeasurable and my day has been elevated

A simple man just trying to make his way in the world, but circumstances out of his control force him to use his Navy experience to be a one-man wrecking crew. Spyglass in one hand, spinach in the other. I want, like, The Lighthouse, but family friendly, and starring Popeye.

SONY animation has experienced a renaissance though with Into the Spider verse (which also won an Oscar), and the Oscar winning short animation "hair". And with the new Playstation studio created within Sony studios I would imagine they would make animated movies of Crash Bandicoot, Rachet and Clank, or even Astrobot.

I remember seeing this teaser when it came out and being SO excited! I've always loved the black and white Popeye cartoons, since I was a little kid. I feel like the teaser really nailed the energy and vibes of the original shorts (I never read the comics so I can't comment on that part) I'm so glad they're planning on making it now!

How did I go for a month without knowing this?! Popeye is the character that introduced me to that age of animation and I see him as the icon of that animation era (alongside Betty Boop and a few others of course). I loved the short and absolutely hated when they went quiet with the film and The Emoji Movie took its place. To learn that it is still arriving honestly has me very excited.

How did I go for a month without knowing this?! Popeye is the character that introduced me to that age of animation and I see him as the icon of that animation era (alongside Betty Boop and a few others of course). I loved the short and absolutely hated when they went quiet with the film and The Emoji Movie took its place. To learn that it is still arriving honestly has me very excited.
What are your sources? You said this other studio will tackle it and that the project is back, but I can find no information about this anywhere

Well a year after this video-we got the entire films animatics LEAKED of the film-which also includes a similar scene to what we got with that proof of concept.
Honestly they should just animate those animatics at this point because legit it’s pretty good and would sell tickets like hot cakes.
It didn't come out in 2022.
