  • Leon Russell, “The Master Of Space And Time” Dead at 74
The singer got the ambiguous title during his stint as Joe Cocker's Musical Director for the “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” era in 1970.
Russell died in his sleep in Nashville, Tennessee, this morning. (November 13, 2016) His health had not been good for at least the past 10 years. In 2010, he underwent surgery to stop leaking brain fluid, and he suffered a heart attack in July 2016.
It was Elton John, a few years ago, who felt it was his mission to make sure that we didn't forget about Leon Russell. So much so that the pair recorded the fabulous rootsy Americana album 'The Union' in 2010. On hearing the news of his old friends death Elton wrote, "My darling Leon Russell passed away last night. He was a mentor, inspiration and so kind to me," John wrote. "Thank God we caught up with each other and made The Union. He got his reputation back and felt fulfilled. I loved him and always will."
On Russell's own website the words..."The Master Of Space And Time was a legendary musician and songwriter originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma who performed his gospel-infused southern boogie piano rock, blues, and country music for over 50 years."
The singer was born in 1942. His real name was Claude Russell Bridges and like many who were just wired to have the gift and the wisdom to perfect it, he got on stage as early as he could playing in nightclubs as a young teen. He got people talking quickly and soon Jerry Lee Lewis was knocking on his door.
By the time he was 17 years-old LA was his home and he quickly became one of most in-demand session musicians playing with the Byrds, Herb Albert and Phil Spector. He also earned his membership into, the now famous, "Wrecking Crew," of backup/studio cats that were the best in the business. Then came the segue from his name only being on the back of albums (if at all) to the front - in big letters.
Russell's self titled debut album featured a tune that would have a special quality that would describe many of his future hits, many that would be recorded by others - it was an ingredient that many Jazz standards had. 'A song For You' could be recorded by any artist in any genre and still sound well-rooted in that land. The tune about forgiveness has been recorded by The Carpenters, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Donna Summer and in 2005 Herbie Hancock and Christina Aguilera's version was nominated for a Grammy.
Like, 'A Song For You' his standard 'This Masquerade' was recorded by dozens of musicians but it's the 1976 rendition by George Benson and his classic 'Breezin' album that stamped it's place in music history. Originally a B-side to Russell's 1972 hit 'Tight Rope' the tune earned Benson a Grammy in 1977 as 'Record of the Year.'
Russell almost disappeared in the 80's and 90's. Instead of stadiums he played in clubs. He just fell out of flavor.
Elton John said a few years ago, "There are some people who are born to be leaders of musicians - and he is,"
Russell loved to talk about his journey's and friends most notably Bob Dylan, George Harrison and the Stones.
Russell, an inductee of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Married to his second wife, Janet, since 1979, Russell has six children. - by John Beaudin
John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 33 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a news man so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first album, “Madman Across The Water” by Elton John as a teen. In the 80's Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show “The Cross Canada Report” which had two version (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the popular Lovesongs at QM-FM in Vancouver.

Truly one of the greatest. If you think you haven't heard him, you've been in a hole for the last 50 years, or more likely didn't know you were hearing him when you heard a hundred other artists.

Elton did a great job of demonstrated just a bit of Leon's genius during his Rock and Rock HoF induction. The list was endless and covered so many genres it would make your head spin.

Thanks, Leon, for all the great music. And thank you, Elton John, for bringing Leon back to us and for helping to restore him to his rightful place in the spotlight. I've no doubt he died a much happier man because of your kind efforts.

I got hooked on Leon when I saw the Mad Dogs movie in 1971. Introduced a girlfriend to him on 11/06/71 when he was playing at the U. of Iowa. It was our first date and it led to our marriage. She's just as heartbroken as I am. Saw him several times over the years. We were always amazed that we could see such a talent in small venues. Sat no more than 20 feet from him at the Cabooze. Caught him at Tipitina's in New Orleans on 05/27/00. Stood outside his bus after a show in Medina, MN on 03/14/02 with his "blue" album in hand. Explained to a roadie that my wife and I fell in love while attending that concert in '71. Asked him to take the album to Leon for an autograph and explain how important he was to us. Leon obliged. After a show at the Dakota Club in Minneapolis a few years ago, we waited for him by his bus. When Leon pulled up in his electric wheelchair, I made sure he knew we loved him. He replied with a smile. Saw him twice since then as recently as this January. Watched him shuffle off stage at the end of the show. Wondered if we would ever see him again.

Rock In Peace, Leon Russell.... I was so lucky to have seen you many times in New York, especially at the Fillmore East, where on a special weekend November 20 and 21, 1970 you headlined over another young piano player named Elton John... Loved you when you pulled together a crazy bunch of excellent musicians for Joe Cocker, and the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour hit the road! You and your talent will be greatly missed and never forgotten.... xxx

A fellow Oklahoman... I loved him since a teen in the sixties... saw him many times through the 70's Most memorable meeting was at a concert in Tulsa with George Harrison and Ravi Shankar. Leon was right behind me, I was on the 13th row...I turned and there he was... giving me a huge smile. He touched my shoulder and a sweet hug on his way onto the stage after George called him up... So lovely.... Also saw him at the Norman Music Festival. I shall always feel his music, his sweetness and in awe of his talent. RIP beloved Leon.

I remember listening to Leon Russell when I was 7 or 8. He'd come on the radio and Dad turn it up...we all jammed to his music, the whole family. I ended up seeing him in concert at the blues club. That was a surprise and made me so happy to hear that voice! Thanks for getting that music out there, Mr. Leon Russell! It's so sad. He's in a place where there is no space and time. He'll always be a friend of mine, in my heart. My Mike loved him and I hope he welcomed him in to the beautiful place we call Heaven. I saw Elton John in South Bend in the 70's. I was in the front row and was wearing a poncho. I know he was singing to me and I was sure I was going to marry him. I love you both so much. Heaven is a place I'll see my Mike and Leon. Elton will continue on and I'll enjoy him now and forever. God Bless Leon and grant him your love and peace. He had God given talent. Thanks, Leon.

I became a fan after Mad Dogs and Englishmen but only recently through You Tube did I encounter him again. His lyrics about a place where there is no space and time really resonated with me because I experienced that with Jan, a lover of mine, whenever we made love. If heaven is better than that, it must be, well, heaven.

Got to see Leon about 4 or 5 times over the past 25 years or so at small venues....after the shows you waited outside his traveling bus and hand one of his bandmates a photo/cd/or whatever he'd take it into Leon to sign. Those 3 standard/signature tunes the Carpenters recorded back in the early 70's, were enough for me to know this man was a giant in the songwriting business. He will be missed, but his music will live on forever.

I have so many precious memories of encounters with Leon in Tulsa in the early 70sin my early teens....like sneaking into a bar at age 14 to hide under the piano and listen to this legend sit in with other local musician friends.....and getting to play on his enormous black Steinway grand piano at his home studio not far from my own home....and attending the Mad Dogs and Englishmen outdoor party (replete w/acid punch) at age 15, that is featured in the movie of the Joe Cocker traveling commune, mega-tour.
You are surely missed.....RIP LR, truly the Master of Space and Time

I liked the album "Will O the Wisp," that one had "Lady Blue" on it. That song really just stopped me in my tracks bcz I was in my songwriting phase and that song is just the perfect song with a beautiful melody along with the beautiful romantic lyrics. I'm so glad I got to see Leon live in Portland in the early 2000's.

I got to see Leon Russell play live for just $10 at the door in Austin not long before Elton John revived his career. It was an incredible show. Needless to say after the duet album he got back to what he deserved and demanded larger rooms and more money. He was such an incredible talent and the world needs to remember that

Thank You Rock History Music what a nice tribute to Leon. He truly was the master of space and time, the creator of the Tulsa sound and a fellow Roper from Will Rogers H.S. His passing has knock the wind out of my sail as in so many others who enjoy the sound of Leon Russell music. His last concert at the Hard Rock here in Tulsa there were so many Baby Boomer's and when Leon walk out on stage his band and songs would take you from the now to a walk down memory lane. omg I see now how Leon talk to Elvis about making all those movies and thank God Leon didn't make it in advertising or the world would've miss his music altogether. Yes, Sir Elton John did good to team up with Leon in the latter days of his journey a project and tour that will live on.Rest in Peace you misplace-d okie we all will miss you dearly.

Wonderful tribute, John. I am a huge fan of Leon's. I finally got to meet him about a year and a half before he died. I told him he was my favorite piano player and he gave me a big smile! His playing and singing can't be topped. His first 3 albums as an artist is some of the best music ever made. His session piano on songs like "Let It Rain" (Eric Clapton) and "Day After Day" (Badfinger) is classic. This guy was one of a kind. The documentary for "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" is a must-see for any music fan. His performance on the "Concert For Bangladesh" is legendary.

Totally agree with you. I first saw Leon during the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. He sure captured everyone's attention. After that, I saw him with the Shelter People, another concert and then during his Carney tour. I never saw him later, which I truly regret but I have great memories of those ones I did see. He was a great piano player, played guitar really well too,
fantastic songwriter and singer. I loved his unique voice. He also was a great showman, in his young days, despite the fact he was somewhat shy. His music will live on forever so he
      will never be forgotten.
