The reason why colors were saturated and contrasting with another color that we wouldn't in our modern sensibilities would put together is that the lighting was by lamp light, candles, or gas light, which has a softer glow, therefore colors needed to stand out. Also in this era, dark haired women were considered the beauties to emulate, to stand out under the soft lighting, whereas today it is blonds. Today's colors are so very soft in relation to our brilliantly lit homes and businesses with LED and incandescent lighting.
Yes! It's great to see what was popular in the past. The first crocheted bedspread I made was in star stitch and fit a queen size bed. It was a gift for my mother. I was 16. When she passed away it was given to me.
I'd venture to guess that most of them are long out of business. If they are pre-1923, they are public domain. Anyone can re-print them or what would be more likely scan and distribute them.
I like that you matched the magazine month with the current one, it makes it easier for me to see the past in everyday terms. Question about the advertising ; were the items presented available through mail order or in a retail shop or both? Do they mention payment methods? Simply interested. I love this segment , please keep it going for May. :)
That was FUN and your dog is ADORABLE! This would make a great series. I just saw The Importance of Being Earnest over the weekend--no problems with cousins marrying!
Even though we are probably the same age, It felt like I was sitting with grandma! I loved this type of video and seeing the colors they were! Maybe the dresscoat lady had a buttonhook?
I would love to grab a cup of tea or my cross stitch I was working on but my cat is currently stretched out fast asleep on my legs while I’m sitting on the kitchen floor. Thankfully I have this video to keep me entertained and take my mind off the discomfort of a cold kitchen floor on my behind! Edit: Forgot to add that I would absolutely love to see more of your collection of magazines, please.
I love all of your videos, but this might be my favourite. What really grabbed me was how you coloured the illustrations to help us visualize better what they meant and I just think it's so charming!
That was such a nice break from the world. Love when you look through your collection!! The star stitch is really nice and with the two colours you can really see the pattern! Thank you for the lovely break in my day
Realy like your way of sharing these old and beautiful magazines. Thank you so mutch. And your blue shirt and crochet skirt your wearing are realy chic and beautiful 🤩
For the star crochet stitch, I turn the work and come back the row with half double crochet (one on the center of the star stitch and one on the top) then I chain three and start the star stitch again. If you want to give it a more interesting look you can make the star stitches on the back loop only or if you want a even more interesting look you can use the back of the half double crochet
Thank you for showing those magazines, it's so interesting! I never understand written direcctions for crochetting and knitting, could you, please, show how to do this beautiful crochetting pattern? When I was a kid in Argentina, my mom used to get a hand crafts weekly magazine. At the end of the year they would send cover for the book, so you could bind it. I still have several of those books.
I color code the stitches when reading a written pattern and for every comma I make a thick vertical black line and for repeats I draw bold brackets around the repeat sequence. I underline each abbreviation with a certain color. For example: sc = green, dc = blue, for 2sc = two green underlines, for a bobble/puff/popcorn I make a circle around the abbreviation, a box around a decrease stitch, etc. I hope this makes sense. Color coding has helped me tackle more complex patterns :)
This was fantastic & I would love you to dive into more of your collection on a whim again & again! Your practical application at the end was soooooo inspiring! Loved it so much-thanks!!!!!
I've done netting! It's a real joy, and goes quickly. I have used old plastic gift cards for gauges and shuttles. You can cut those easily enough to suit your needs. As I became more proficient, I ordered a set of really nice copper gauges and shuttle from an Etsy seller. I'm like you in that I have a flair for all things arts and crafts, so I can literally dabble in all and have mastered quite a few disciplines in handicrafts. Have fun!
Yes please do more episodes like this. I'd love some books like that. Did you find them on eBay or where you live? I have 2 small bags made with that stitch. They are old and I'm wondering if they're from that era or newer. Thank you 😊❤️❤️
This was so cool, I’m definitely going to look up that stitch! I’m currently working on vintage crochet bedspread - it’s composed of large sunflower & popcorn hexagons. You’ve inspired me! I think a series discussing these catalogs and magazines would be so interesting and fun 🙌🏾🙌🏾
That sounds like a bedspread my grandmother made for me when I was a child! It was for my trouseau, for when I got married. I still have it, it only comes out on special occasions lol.
I enjoyed the look at the old magazines - I would love to see a new review each month. If some months you have more than 2 issues, feel free to just show us 2 and saved the others for next year, =P lol. Also, unrelated to this video: I really like your channel. I think I found it after I went into a historical costuming YT rabbit hole? Maybe you were recommended to me after I started watching Retro Claude's channel, actually. But, in any case, I was really pleasantly surprised by your content, because so many knitting channels (I had the expectation coming in that you were a "knitting channel" because of your name) are just knitting (which is fine! I love that YT is full of creators who are passionate about what they do!) But I'm multi-crafty, and it's a lot of fun to watch someone dabble in All The Things like I do! (I crochet, spin, knit, embroider, and sew, and I'd love to get into tatting or other lace-making techniques, and I've dabbled in other non-yarn, non-fabric hobbies, as well).
I recently crocheted a scarf for my sister using the modern star stitch so its interesting to see the difference of how were done then and how they are done now.
I very much enjoyed your delightful afternoon tea with entertainment a beautiful lap-pup and bringing to life - like magic - a craft from an over hundred year old magazine😊 I've been lead to believe one of the reasons we nowadays think of subtle colours being the norm for historic fashion is because the examples we still have from the times have faded after over a hundred or hundreds of years. Our ancestors weren't minimalist, I do not think - more always seems to have been more for much of history.
Started my antique magazine collection last year when I discovered a stash of Delineator. To my very pleasant surprise, same location has a few Demorest's!! Due to condition, they all must be handle gently & infrequently. But the wealth of info contained is priceless 💖
I enjoyed the past fashion magazines. It was interesting and fun to see what was happening at those times and seeing the fashions of those times. Thank you.
my husband's parents were first cousins. I was not let know this information until AFTER we were married. The two of them grew up in different parts of the country - so I did not piece it together until I was married. The first 2 of their 10 children had multiple disabilities and died early in life. Thier oldest grandchild also has multiple disabilities - I don't know if that is coincidence or not; but I was very afraid while pregnant !!!
When they were talking about the economic change from 20 years ago, it was for most people. War had a devastating effect in the South because of the Confederacy printing money like it was candy and the supply chain disruptions for in the north. Immigrants staying in cities had what we look at as a hard life, and was, but from what they came from they weren't relying on a government to feed them or one that taxed them into starvation. Those who moved west at the time opening farm land (yes, taken from Amerindians) allowed for immigrants to own property and farm. So anyone looking at economic times in 1880s and comparing them to the 1860s it was a new world.
Those magazines are so fascinating! Many years ago I found old newspapers under linoleum flooring, they were from the 1930’s. A very interesting read. Thank you for sharing your videos. That crochet pattern is lovely. 💐
Lovely vue of your collection. Thanks. Also, not to worry, your first prononciation of sewing terms is fine ( in fact it's better than a lot of English speaking people I know)
Would you mind placing your videos related to magazines in magazines playlist? I find this topic especially delightful and fascinating and I'd like to share them all with friends
Definitely please continue this series! It's a lot of fun from so many perspectives, from art inspiration to anthropological inquiries, and I'd love to have more!
This was wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing your collection. And thank you for working the example of "star stitch"; what would you choose to use that stitch to create? I think it would be beautiful & warm, for a blanket or shawl. I hope you choose to continue this series.
I find it so fascinating when you go through some of the magazines that you have. I am all for more magazine videos 😃 If you ever dive in to the 1880s sewing and knitting a garment(s) I also here for it! 😍 I love that you have so many different crafts to share!
Hi, it's fascinating to peek into the magazines with you, but can you please share how to do the crochet again, I can't read crochet patterns, and yes I've tried. (Dyslexic) thanks.💖
I would be really interested how you try some knitting and crocheting from The Columbia Book of Yarn. Ladies' Eton Waist with this type of pink and grey is a very pretty combination, but tbh I really struggle with that pattern, so moved to Ladies' Columbia Crocheted Vest right next to it, which is easier to me as a beginner :")
I would love to learn to he star stitch, I kinda crochet, and have been trying to teach myself how to knit it , I love all sorts of crafts and recently bought myself a small loom and some cordage for it but have not put it together yet . Thank you for or the dating advice, lol
Yay! I love these videos 😊 Your outfit is gorgeous, especially your skirt! Is it knit or crochet? Thanks for the demonstration of the stitch, too. I came across the star stitch a few years ago, and could not make heads or tails of the written instructions; I had to turn to YT, and then it was so easy.
My great Uncle Floyd loved to cook and he would would explain the reciet to me, Thank you for explaining to me that this was the proper name for a recipe of his generation. I always had the urge to " correct him" Now I am so glad I didn't.
Your prononciation of those french words is good don't worry =) "coiffure" and "guipure", letter "u" is prononce [y], however I can't remember an exemple in English with the same sound
I love to see what you get up to. I am curious about wearing sweaters. I was always too warm or didn't care if I was cold and wouldn't wear a sweater. Do you feel comfortable in the small short sleeved sweaters all day?
The dating advice is just “don’t marry your cousin.” 😂😂😂😂
Oh yes, please do more of these! I am obsessed with the idea of having some netted mitts, for some reason. I'm just intimidated by netting!
The reason why colors were saturated and contrasting with another color that we wouldn't in our modern sensibilities would put together is that the lighting was by lamp light, candles, or gas light, which has a softer glow, therefore colors needed to stand out. Did you track how long that project took you to create? Also, did you sign & date your work? I would consider that Applied Art.
@@karengerber8390 I have no idea, but it was several months. No, I don't have a label on it. It is 44 years old.
I wish theses companies would offer reprints of their magazines and books. I would love to look through them.
especially knitting patterns
I'd venture to guess that most of them are long out of business. If they are pre-1923, they are public domain. Anyone can re-print them or what would be more likely scan and distribute them.
Thanks!
Don't marry your cousin 😂😂😂 sound advice. I love that crochet stitch though 💚
I made my tam in a star stitch and did not realize I was suposed to break the yarn every row. Makes so much more sense now!
That’s a beautiful stitch and thank you for colouring the illustrations it’s much easier to imagine in colour xx
As to the buttons on the walking coat. It occurs to me that a lady that would have worn it would have had a maid to help her dress.
I like that you matched the magazine month with the current one, it makes it easier for me to see the past in everyday terms. Question about the advertising ; were the items presented available through mail order or in a retail shop or both? Do they mention payment methods? Simply interested. I love this segment , please keep it going for May. :)
So interesting! I've recently read some old german midwifery magazines, those were fascinating too!
I loved how you showed a close-up of all the illustrations, and then colored them in. That made the visualisation much easier!
I love alpaca as well! So comfy! And looking through the magazine was awfully fun! 🥰
That was FUN and your dog is ADORABLE! This would make a great series. I just saw The Importance of Being Earnest over the weekend--no problems with cousins marrying!
I would definitely enjoy a series of looking through antique magazines! This was very relaxing.
I would love a pdf of the cross stitch pattern! I really enjoyed the format of this video and how you added thr colors to the fashion plates.
Please do another video with more magazines, I really enjoyed this one.
Yes please, give us some more antique magazine reading 😊
Even though we are probably the same age, It felt like I was sitting with grandma! I loved this type of video and seeing the colors they were! Maybe the dresscoat lady had a buttonhook?
I agree about the buttonhook, Clovercat. It was an everyday item for well over a century because those buttons were a b*tch. lol
Go look at CaTHY Hay's channels, where she's reconsstructing a long coat from the Victorian era, with a lot of embroidery on it.
I think toilet would be pronounced in French, eg. "Twa let"
For the star crochet stitch, I turn the work and come back the row with half double crochet (one on the center of the star stitch and one on the top) then I chain three and start the star stitch again. This was such a fun and relaxing video! The coloring really helped visualize how it's supposed to look :)
Love this so much! The perfect little break from work with my cup of tea. Yes please to more monthly magazines!
This was fantastic & I would love you to dive into more of your collection on a whim again & again! Your practical application at the end was soooooo inspiring! Loved it so much-thanks!!!!!

That stick looks so cozy. 🧶

I do love these chats
Fun! Would love to see more of these in the future!
Oh that star stitch is so fabulous! I'd love the instructions
Joining the chorus of 'yes please!' to seeing more of your magazine collection, please!
More! yes please. This was a real treat.
I'd love a glimpse into your historical collection! Sadly not enough spoons to craft whilst watching today.
Been crocheting for a long time but haven’t come across this stitch,it’s beautiful, can’t wait to try it❤️🧶😊
I`d gladly watch you flip through all the magazines!
I enjoyed the past fashion magazines. It was interesting and fun to see what was happening at those times and seeing the fashions of those times. Thank you.

That’s horrible, there’s a reason most cultures don’t do cousin marriage anymore. The ones who do end up with higher amounts of severe disabilities.
I love the magazine flip throughs!

Definitely make this monthly! If you think you have time and want to though, no pressure ☺️
Absolutely do this again! It was delightful.
Thank you for sharing! I would really enjoy going through more magazines with you.
Those magazines are so fascinating! Many years ago I found old newspapers under linoleum flooring, they were from the 1930’s. A very interesting read. Thank you for sharing your videos. That crochet pattern is lovely. 💐
This was fascinating! Please do continue sharing!!!
have you evr heard of puntoinaria or reticella there italian needle lace from the 1400s
This video was so cozy, more of these please :D
I just made a hot cup of tea and this video popped up in my feed - how perfect!
Lovely vue of your collection. Thanks. Also, not to worry, your first prononciation of sewing terms is fine ( in fact it's better than a lot of English speaking people I know)
Also, forgot to add: please show us the headdresses! I need more headdresses in my life!

I love walking back in history with publications. So interesting to ponder all of our similarities and occasional differences. I would enjoy more!! 🌺
Love this and would love this to become a monthly staple! I love looking through the old magazines. It’s delightfulz

Looking through the magazine was really interesting! Thank you! I would be interested in more😁
I really enjoyed these videos and would love to watch more!
I would love to see these videos for different months! This was such fun.
So interesting. Yes please - more Victorian magazines. ❤️
I would be really interested how you try some knitting and crocheting from The Columbia Book of Yarn.

This was such a nice relaxing video to watch💕 Thank you for all the inspiration 🥰

omg i wanna try filet lace! not sure how to make netting tho lol
I'd wear the scarlet and gold necktie with a black gown.
More magazines please.
I love to see what you get up to. I am curious about wearing sweaters. I was always too warm or didn't care if I was cold and wouldn't wear a sweater. Do you feel comfortable in the small short sleeved sweaters all day?
Is it possible to get those beautiful netting patterns? They look so stunning!
I would like to see the crochet stitch instructions more clearly and watch how you did it.
I realised I didn't know your name despite watching many of your videos! Hi Maike!
i love the jumper & skirt your wearing - did you make them ? and if so would you be up for sharing which pattern they are?
