      It literally took me 34 minutes to install and make my first round. It runs like a sewing machine. Very simple design. GREAT PRODUCT

  • @digitalbrick
    @digitalbrick 2 года назад +3

    I have been reloading for years. I had high hopes for this product but it is a failure. I installed it and reloaded 300 rounds or 9 mm. It started okay, but you better have EVERYTHING set up before you load the cases because it is in the way and if you have to adjust either powder of case length you have to either empty tube or fight the thing with every action. I then did 100 rounds of 380 acp. The product started to fail regularly. The slider started to hang up so the case was not inserted completely. Then the swing arm would fail to drop cases. Then the clamp (that scratches the press) gave way a little. I took it off and restored to factory
    This is not ready to be part of a press. The stress is too much for long term use and defeats the purpose of a 550 which is to have a more intimate role in the reloading process. It is a great tool if you want to learn how to control your frustration or new swear words. If you really want a case feeder get the 750.

    Neat product, but one of the reasons I chose the 550 was so that I manually hold and feel the case mouth of each piece of brass. I reload lots of range brass and it’s worth the small amount of extra time to quickly review each piece.

    I suggest that you put a 45acp case and put it on the top of the primer push rod for a little extra weight. I did this to my 550 and 650 and it seems to help keep the rod settled during the operation of the press.

    I bought his case feeder and have the Dillon 550B which is about 30 years old. Had to file down the plastic part as my press had a lip so be aware. I also ran into clearance issues with the Dillion Roller handle as it would hit the shell feeder. I put original handle on and it works fine. The roller handle has a bend in it that causes the issue. I have ordered an inline fabrication handle and hope this works. This case feeder for the money works very good.

      @@robertchichitano3209 I am sure the 'Blue Press' will operate flawlessly if you set it up carefully and don't get in a hurry and take measurements of seating depth and powder delivery as you progress. Also...monitor the priming system as it can and will be problematic at times. When you get to know the press it won't be so intimidating. As far as a manually advanced turret style press goes, it will make fine ammo and stay in 'specification' for the entire batch if you are attentive. Therein is not the problem I see.
      The problem is trying to make an almost full-on progressive out of it. Notice all the hoops he had to jump through to get all the aftermarket gear to fit and work correctly. Do you have the time & expertise and the tooling to do that? Not too many do & they'll end up screwing with it until they get tired and pull the stuff off and go back to the way that machine was designed to be used. On the other hand, some will be successful and stick with it.
      Today many handloaders think speed is most important, that is not so... loading accurate ammo is. When you make a press complicated with ad-ons it will distract you from paying attention as you should & you end up wrestling with the little adjustments of the add-on gear...in the meantime you run the risk of making 'squibs' and that can be a very calamitous event, even deadly.
      If you want higher production, look for that type of press...a full on progressive but be warned...it takes time and experience with any progressive to make foolproof ammo that you can rely on.

  •  3 года назад +10

    I reload many calibers and will have to change toolheads and be able to single feed as well. This is too much work for me when calibrating the press. I might as well just get myself a 750 on top of the 550 I already have...

    I know nothing about reloading (other than the obvious, i.e., you put new powder and primers and bullets into cases you're reusing) -- but, I _was_ a camera repairman (for too many years), so I have a bit of an "intuitive" grasp of how various parts interoperate with each other to perform a task (i.e., shutter release is pressed, releasing _not_ the shutter, but, the _mirror._ Mirror rises, stopdown mechanism actuates the lens's aperture, and when mirror is fully raised, shutter is then released _by_ the mirror. When the shutter has closed (duration depending on the speed to which it is set), the shutter tells the _mirror_ to drop, and the mirror tells the lens to re-open the aperture.
    Within each of those subsystems there are numerous parts, all interacting, and I haven't even touched on things like the transport, metering, shutter timing, and so forth.
    I digress.
    It seems to me that a simple pawl could be used to rotate that stack of clear tubes each time the lever is pulled, so that they would all be used at the same rate without the operator needing to be paying attention to _that_ and as a result possibly missing something _else_ (i.e., too much/too little powder, etc.)
    I doubt it would be very difficult at all to implement something like that.

    • @waynehendrix4806
      @waynehendrix4806 3 года назад +1

      Agreed. I did a lot of automation in my life, and anything waiting for an operator action without an alarm drives me nuts. The incremental rotation at least would exhaust the whole battery before failing. On the other hand, if you watch your process, you at least increased the rate.

    • @This_is_my_real_name
      @This_is_my_real_name 3 года назад

      @@waynehendrix4806 -- Yeah, and it does _more_ than drive you nuts -- the best illustration that springs to mind is from a work of fiction, but that does not diminish the reality of the problem. Ever see "The Andromeda Strain"? (I have not read the book, so I have no idea how closely if at all this part matches it.)
      There is a group of scientists in a top secret underground laboratory, so secret, working with such _potentially_ world-changing materials that there resides at the core of the lab a nuclear bomb, there for the purpose of "sterilization" of any infection that has breached the confines in which it had been kept.
      I digress. Worse yet, I forget exactly what "tell" they were testing in order to find -- but, the scientist who was on-duty at the time that particular reaction _did_ manifest had "zoned out" because of sitting there watching one uneventful reaction after another for hours on end, and when THE reaction occurred, she was basically out of it, and didn't notice!
      This is IMO something endemic to sentient beings. A chicken can be trained to look for the right (or wrong?) kind of "shiny thing" moving down a conveyor belt (I'm not making this up!) -- but for a _human_ it's not just a matter of it being "boring" work -- it's a matter of it having a genuine effect upon the mind, possibly upon the brain itself on a bio-chemical level.

      @@briannemec9214 -- A friend just sent me a box with about a grand worth of film -- he's a retired "famous photographer" from a major newspaper. Bricks of Tri-X, 100
      rolls of Tri-X, beaucoup other emulsions including a LARGE bulk roll (250' I think) of Super-XX -- plus lots of Ilford film, a bunch of 120 film, some C41 B&W (which Kodak no longer makes), etc.
      My freezer was already full (including treasures like bricks of Ektar 25), but I'll manage to fit this in. So, I'm more than set for life, given my advanced age. My wife should make out nicely on ebay once I'm gone.
      So, whether they still make film or not, there'll be lots of it in deep freeze all around the world. Plus, Ilford, the Eastern Europeans, Agfa -- all still in business, IIRC.
      And, yes, the bankrupt EKC _is_ still making _some_ film, but nothing like the cornucopia of emulsions from their heyday. I don't think they still make Plus-X (one of my favorites -- but, I do still have a decent supply), Tech Pan is gone, Panatomic-X (incredible film) long gone.
      And, of course, the King of Them All -- Kodachrome -- RIP. Long Live the King. :(

    Well chalk one up to not reading enough comments. I got this an assembled it over the past weekend and right off the bat I knew what the problem was going to be. There is nothing to hold the case in the shell plate, so as it feeds it any slight drift outward and it hangs on the resize die. And even if it is fully fed and resized, if it drifts at all on the way down, when you go to push in the primer it will hang there as well. So without some kind of clip that the stock feeder ramp has, this thing is more or less useless. I tried adding some material to the feeder to push it in tighter, but then the cases don't drop. And of course these guys won't take a return once you've assembled it, only a store credit, can't imagine why 🙄 EDIT just noticed he didn't use dies with the 9mn🤦 he would have had issues trust me

    In my opinion: as long as you seat the bullets by hand, you have all the time in the world to grab a case with the other hand simultaneously and insert it manually. And it seems you are not getting the time back which was spent on filling the case tubes. Indeed, you have to let go off the handle for inserting a case manually.
    But turning the tubes every 25 cases of 9mm is just another thing which might cause distraction. I think i will leave my 550 as it is or upgrade to a more advanced press.

    Having owned a Dillon 550/550B since 1998 I'm hard pressed to believe that this "upgrade" is worthwhile! I've loaded thousands of rounds of pistol ammo rounds over the years, and once the dies/powder are properly set I can easily crank out 400 rounds per hour manually setting the bullet and case for each round. Dillon's much better and more expensive case feed upgrade for the 550 is only rated at a 20% through put improvement (480 rds/hr for a typical user). The DAA upgrade is worse than the Dillon, takes more time to load and index and probably only increases through put by 10%! The Dillon 550 was NEVER designed to be an auto case fed reloader! The ergonomics are all wrong and I've never seen an "auto feed" case or bullet upgrade that worked! Maybe "upgrading" a 550 to auto case feed makes sense if you are loading 5,000+ rounds without changing anything on a desert island. If not, be happy with 400 rounds per hour from a manual feed 550. You are advertising a great solution for a problem that doesn't exist. If reloaders need/want production/high volume, point them to a Dillon 650/750/1050 reloader that is optimized for autofeed!

But I use the Titan EasyDial powder measure option on my small powder measure because I load quite a few calibers with Titegroup, which measure extremely accurately thru the Easy Dial. I am concerned with the clearance of the EasyDial and powder bar as powder is thrown and the bar and dial reciprocate past the white cable that is operated by the center plunger for the Mini Case loader. Do yo think there would be sufficient adjustability to arrange the cable to have clearance for the powder bar and EasyDial to pass without obstruction?

      @@allenhoward178 to some extend, I agree. On the other hand, they made it this way to be as widely usable on all 550 variants as possible.
      I don’t care, quite happy with my full equipped XL 650.

    I'm new to reloading and I just bought some hodgdon lilgun powder and I would like a little info on a safe charge that would put me around 900 950fps with a 10.5inch barrel 300blk 150 to 170gr bullet just ball park

      May I suggest not to get your reloading data from the internet but rather a reliable current reloading manual. Also suggest getting a chronograph to verify.

    Looks to me like they took some of the ideas from Lee case feeder.

    Hi, Gavin. Another good video. Where can a fellow pick up those Allen wrenches and screwdriver sets?

      @Joe Chance I meant the exact sets, not just any old sets.

    Not a good system, a modified dillion case feeder is better, and better yet no case feeder on a 550. At that point get a 650/750.

    Still think my Hornady LnL case feeder is a huge step above this mr. bullet feeder. Reason I didn’t go with Dillon and not rich enough for Apex 10 😂

    Hi, I've been following your channel and am looking for feedback on a previous topic. 6.5 Grendel vs 6 ARC. Looking and commenting on the two comparisons I keep getting confused when 6 arc 107gr is compared to 6.5 Grendel 123gr. When do you compare 107 to 107 or 123 to 123?. After looking at 107gr Grendel from Alexander Arms the same for 6 arc they seem closer. When I asked Kota boy he gave an explanation of weights for the two I couldn't justify. Are there any reasons not to compare the same weight bullet between them?

    I went from the 650 to the 550 to get away from the complexity. Na’thanks.

    Sorry, I do not see the value of this mechanism. Too much complexity, hand loading should be simplified and not made more complex.

    The poor ergonomics can bee seen clearly as you cant your shoulders to view into the case and place a bullet. Visibility is poor on this design. Probably worth getting a different press all together.

    MEH, way to many manual steps for a mediocre list of workable calibers. If I am going the route of automation I will pop for a 750 with a bullet feeder, case feeder and trimmer.
