      Well done William, I am 18 years into this stuff now and I still get a buzz from making a great contact, it does not have to be DX just low power or and a nice chat makes me happy. Welcome to the hobby, have fun. 73 Kevan 😀

    Great video & big thanks for posting it. We had a couple of camping holidays on Mersea Island many years ago and we love that part of the coast but had no idea that packing shed was there. I passed my foundation exam this week and was in two minds about buying a HF rig until I get my intermediate licence but after watching your video and others reviewing the G90 I've decided that for the money it's worth giving it a try and (hopefully) should get some contacts even on just 10 Watts. Thanks & 73's Martin

      Thanks Martin, for the money they are a great radio. You may know there is an Ofcom consultation taking place at the moment and one of the proposals is to increase the permitted output power (on most bands) for foundation licence holders to 20w. So the G90 will be ideal as a starter radio👍

      Passed my Foundation 2 years ago - bought a G90 at the same time & to be honest it's probably the best you'll get at the price. Currently got it as a base radio but also use it portable de M7CCQ

      @@DontTreadOnMe825 I have a confession to make 🙂following my post someone at the local club offered me a Kenwood TS570D + external LDG KT-100 auto tuner (with a known history) for not much more than I was going to pay for the G90 so I went for that and loving it. I still want a Xiegu for holiday use but will probably got for the X6100 ...... once funds allow 🙂

    Very nice location! I really think you should take a longer GF pole, maybe a 20/80 split OCFD or an EFHW, and try for some DX on 40m/20m/15m/10m. With all that salt water around you, you have a great take-off. Being in Central Europe, I do miss the sea coasts.

    • @2e0wmghamradioandkayaking85
      @2e0wmghamradioandkayaking85  2 месяца назад

      I was using the linked dipole on this occasion as I was more interested in trying a new radio on different bands and I tend to stick to using resonant antennas, I use a very short middle pole to make reaching the links to change bands easy.
      When I am looking for DX at the shed, or anywhere I am on top of saltwater I mostly use quarter wave verticals with elevated radials, including on 40m, all of which perform very well for DX as some of my other videos show. If I was staying overnight at the shed I would likely look for DX on 40m overnight and in the grey-line in the morning and use the quarter wave vertical but during the day I like to work around the UK.
      Over the years I’ve used all sorts of aerials including OCF and End Feds but return time after time to what works for me for me depending on what I am doing and where, how much time I have and who I am looking to work.
      One of my videos here features a Vertical Dipole Array which is hard to beat for working DX from the shed, but it is heavy and not easy or quick to put up so rarely gets used. A simple dipole used vertically hauled up on the flagpole takes me four minutes to put up and I can swap out the elements to change bands in no time.
      Thanks for watching, I am lucky to live by the water so if I am after DX I make the most of it.

    Interesting video. I would invest in the fan tho'. Mine gets hot after a rew minutes. Use it for cw and Ft8. Longest contact on FT8 was Kazakhstan. Not bad for 20w and some damp string. Good luck interested to see how you get on.

      Thanks Allan, I’ve had the G90 a while now and it’s become my go to portable radio, my FT-857 feels neglected. So far I’ve not found the radio gets too hot, even on quite warm days it’s been ok as long as I keep it out of the direct sun. I don’t do data modes or CW so it might not be the case if I did. It’s a fantastic little radio and the built in ATU is the icing on the cake ;)

    Thank you for the video. I have the same antenna analyzer as you. I wasn’t planning on taking it with me when I go portable with my “new” G90 because it has an internal analyzer and tuner. Why do you bring the separate analyzer? Is the internal analyzer not adequate? Thanks.

    Great video if your a tourist... no so much if you're interested in the G90. 12 minutes of feely touchy and 3 minutes of radio, without any detail to boot.. Each to their own I guess.

    • @2e0wmghamradioandkayaking85
      @2e0wmghamradioandkayaking85  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, each to their own and I am sure there are plenty of videos out there giving you chapter and verse on the G90 features and specification etc, perhaps even a video of someone taking it out of a box but that’s not what this channel is about. If that’s what you are looking for best give this channel a swerve in future as nothing is likely to change. Thanks anyway…
