Ok, this has nothing to do with ham radio except for the last few seconds where nothing much happens. I do say at the beginning of the video that it has nothing to do with ham radio so please don’t watch it and then tell me it has nothing to do with ham radio😉

Rowing Boat HF Mobile

Operating from a rowing boat… It wasn’t easy, the wind was blowing us around a bit and it was a bit of a faff so I didn’t get a chance to talk about the set up. We used an MFJ 17ft whip with two weighted counterpoise wires dropped into the water. The whip was attached to a jaws clamp and clamped onto the footrest on the floor of the boat. We only had the boat for an hour but managed to make two...

Great place to do radio. All the amenities you need there. I often like to go there and listen to Richard G0NAD Giving the GB2RS news broadcast. Well done to you both on reaching Germany on 2m.
Awsome...
Evening Kevan, dropped on your channel again for the views & the news also thanks for doing the videos.73
Sotabeams wire is lightweight but it does snap and break often
Nice one.
Nice to see you had a good time on 145Alive and could even read the spreadsheet on the Phone !! Keep putting out the calls on 4M I have the same radio and its good to leave on for those occasional calls that come in ..Turn the squelch up though ;-)
Very informative, thanks for the tip about the calculator!
Another good video!
Ah fingering ho.. know it well 😆
I winced when you went under that height restriction not having seen you take down the antenna! 😅
Brilliant video, many thanks.
Thanks for watching Pete👍
Kevan, great video! I’m in CA, and also use linked dipoles made from SOTA Beams wire. I’d love to come back to the UK and work portable one day. All that lovely EU DX just “up the road” 😂😂. Thanks again. And please keep creating content like this. K6KWI
Thanks Keith, having EU so close does mean you can work a lot of different countries in quick order. I spent quite a bit of time in Canada and it’s notable that most of the time I was working USA and some Canada as there are not the huge number of different countries so close by, although working into the Caribbean was much easier from there. Although, when EU is on your doorstep you don’t consider it DX of course, so I got more of a buzz working it from Canada, especially working back into the UK. From here on the East coast it’s quite easy to work into EU on VHF/UHF, it is that close. The linked dipole works great even at only a few feet off the ground which makes it easier to swap bands in no time. That and my home made quarter wave verticals with elevated radials are my go to antennas. Thanks for watching, 73 Kevan
Great job Kevan! 73
Thanks Tim😊
Nice one and I love the way you used the no overnight parking sign! Amazing what you can do with little more than a length of wire! Just wish I had a longer garden!
Thanks Richard, the sign is handy for sure. I have a small garden and have no antennas for HF at my QTH at all, but on top of that I found trying to deal with urban noise tiresome so concentrating on portable and mobile operating was a choice I made years ago and I have never looked back. Thanks for watching, 73 Kevan
Fingeringhoe - probably the best place name in Essex, hotly followed by Vange, phnarr phnarr 🙂 Great video anyway, as always. I remember when 40m only went up to 7.1 - it was always too full to find a space! 72 de G0TVJ.
Thanks Neil, yes Fingringhoe often raises an eyebrow, Finbar Saunders can often be seen enjoying a pint in the Whalebone Pub with Mrs Gimlet. If you know you know😉
Hi Kevan! Glad to see you are OK and outdoor despite of the WX. I like your build very much. Simple, light and maximal performance on each band! Thanks for sharing. 73 de Alex, HB9CKR
Cheers Alex, the linked dipole is my go to antenna if I want to be able to change bands quickly but still use a resonant antenna. Like you say, it is so simple, and keeping it low means I can swap bands very quickly, maybe not great for DX but it just works. If I am looking for DX I try to get next to saltwater and go for a vertical. In the winter I operate more from inside the car but still try and get out portable including in the kayak. Thanks for watching…
I worked G3PXT on the 9th November. Very nice gentleman. David M0DUU
Well done Kevan. Still pioneering usual.
Thanks Russell👍
👍😀
Cheers Graeme…
Great work kevan and managed to keep your feet dry on this video.will give both those parks a go so thanks for activating
Thanks Andy, yes, no wet feet. The tides were not in my favour this weekend. High tide at both ends of the day in darkness, so I stayed on dry land. Thanks for watching…
If Carlsberg made radios, they'd make an FT-891. God tier radio. When I pop my clogs I'm being being buried with mine. Ancient civilizations made the 7 wonders of the engineering world. Yaesu made the FT-891. 😘👌
Wow, you do love your 891. Have you asked it to marry you? 😂 I had one years ago when Yaesu first made them but sold it, and regretted it. Thanks for watching, if you do get married to your beloved 891 please send me an invitation to the wedding. 73 Kevan
@2e0wmghamradioandkayaking85 by all means! The wedding dinner menus will be designed the same as the FT-891 menus i.e. no sod will no what to look for! 🤣🫣
👍👍
Thanks Kev, looked like a lovely day.
It was Phil, sunshine, ham radio and kayaking. What’s not to love 😊
Very good!
Thanks for watching Mike👍
Nice contact in Padua, Italy. 🤝
Very relaxing location. Thank you for sharing. 73
Thanks for watching 😊
Times and Tide they say…..Good paddle out..😅
Thanks Keith😊
Technically you're Maritime Mobile
Looks like big fun. If you only get a single contact, you can explore the conditions and see if you had a bad connection or this antenna doesn’t work at that spot, etc. Good luck seeing you again. N4KBM.
Thanks for watching Tommy👍
E-Bikes is for toothless Grannies like me. But even the Toothless me rides without E-Support. Tnx for the nice Video Kevan. Happy Tuesday over onto the Island. 73 de Uncle Günter 💯👍🙋♂
Thanks Gunter, I will let Richard know he is a toothless granny 😂
My kind of radio operating. Great stuff! 73 de EI6JHB
Thanks for watching Ian😊
Spend many years in Harwich, Dovercourt in the 70's on holiday. And the ferry to Felixstowe was a highlight as well. Way too many good memories to mention. de G0LQP
Thanks for watching Stephen, I love Harwich and its maritime History. A town full of character.
Nice one, Kevan!
Cheers Phil…
Love Harwich, we love staying in the PierHotel right where you were filming.
Thanks for watching Phil, I stayed in the Pier Hotel several years ago, a ringside seat for watching the ship movements but not cheap…
@ you’re right there! Not cheap.
A grand day out, who needs Amateur Radio! 73
Indeed, sometimes a paddle without radio is in order, thanks for watching👍
Hi Kevan, very impressive and lovely video. Well done and enjoyable. This is the type of navigation where you keep the radio only in case of an emergency ! 👏👍 Best 72/73 from Alex, HB9CKR
Hi Alex, the weather was perfect. I always carry a VHF marine handheld radio with me and most of the others had one as well. On this paddle we were never far from the shore at any point and amongst us were some very experienced and qualified paddlers, so with seven of us this and the good conditions it felt about as safe as it could do but I never go on the water without the radio. Thanks for watching, 73 Kevan
I spent many overnights anchored I. The pyefleet❤
What ate the currents like round Mersea? I’d be worried about getting washed out to sea!
Hi Phil, most of the time on this paddle the tide was helping up along. It’s only really when there is a strong offshore wind it can lead to problems. For Mersea that would be wind from the north. The tide can get quite fast at Mersea Stone on the eastern tip of the island and in the past there have been a few cases I know of where paddle boarders have got into trouble. Thanks for watching😊
That looks such a great trip... You had perfect conditions too. Another one now on my todo list!
Thanks, I’ve paddled around Mersea a few times and no two days are the same, I feel blessed to have this on my doorstep😊
Very enjoyable Kevan. Congratulations on your award given you by Colchester Radio Amateurs for your DXpeditions. It’s well deserved.
Thanks Russell, it was a nice surprise👍
Beautiful Trip Kevan...you Guys rock 💥💯👌
Cheers Uncle 👍
Hello Kevan - Nice one. Ya could have been 2E0WMG/MM ⚓⚓
Cheers Gerald, in one of my previous videos I had a couple of HF QSOs while actually floating on the kayak but it’s not very practical😂
Well put together Kevan👍
Thanks Geoff, you’re coming with us next time👍
A great day had by all.
Another great video. Could you share link to the receiver please?

What a shitty tent! - not a fly-sheet in sight, if it rains, you get soaked.
It rained a lot and we didn’t get wet, but thanks for your input.
Very nice location! I really think you should take a longer GF pole, maybe a 20/80 split OCFD or an EFHW, and try for some DX on 40m/20m/15m/10m. With all that salt water around you, you have a great take-off. Being in Central Europe, I do miss the sea coasts.
I was using the linked dipole on this occasion as I was more interested in trying a new radio on different bands and I tend to stick to using resonant antennas, I use a very short middle pole to make reaching the links to change bands easy. When I am looking for DX at the shed, or anywhere I am on top of saltwater I mostly use quarter wave verticals with elevated radials, including on 40m, all of which perform very well for DX as some of my other videos show. If I was staying overnight at the shed I would likely look for DX on 40m overnight and in the grey-line in the morning and use the quarter wave vertical but during the day I like to work around the UK. Over the years I’ve used all sorts of aerials including OCF and End Feds but return time after time to what works for me for me depending on what I am doing and where, how much time I have and who I am looking to work. One of my videos here features a Vertical Dipole Array which is hard to beat for working DX from the shed, but it is heavy and not easy or quick to put up so rarely gets used. A simple dipole used vertically hauled up on the flagpole takes me four minutes to put up and I can swap out the elements to change bands in no time. Thanks for watching, I am lucky to live by the water so if I am after DX I make the most of it.
Quite a lot of Wilson ships here on the Tees and Hartlepool ports
Cheers Carl, I’ve just been looking at their website, it says they have 140 ships, Brightlingsea is very small so there is only room for one ship of that size at a time. Marine Traffic is currently showing the ship in the Bay of Biscay on the way to Bilbao in Northern Spain. Thanks for watching.
Another nice video, I have a G90 and occasionally complete a hard reset because the software can get corrupted after a long period of operation. SDR radios, being very similar to my laptop, need a complete shutdown from time to time as the first port of call to sort out an issue. M0NMT
Thanks Neil, I’ve had the G90 a while now and it worked flawlessly until that. I’ve lost a bit of faith in it but hopefully it will be ok again now. Thanks for watching👍
As always, Kevan, this is a lovely video from you on the water. Sesame snaps are always a good find for when you need a little boost of energy. Thanks; nice work!
Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it😊
Nice WX, cool navigation passing the yacht and commercial harbour. Love the island. Glad you could fix the G90. Only one QSO but a good one. Are you monitoring CH68 and 16 at the same time? It was like beeing there! Dont change anything, good work 👏 73 de Alex, HB9CKR
Hi Alex, the radio does have dual watch so you can monitor two channels but I just monitor 68 when in Brightlingsea Harbour. Thanks for watching and your comments😊
