Y'all had been requesting our group learn a new a cappella song, so we found "The Old Churchyard" and knew it would be a great fit for the sisters to sing. HOWEVER, Katie started playing around with droning on her violin, making the song so unique we knew we had to keep it.
I guess the search for the next a cappella song carries on! lol
~Ellen
P.S. Don't have the volume up too loud when the outro comes. We about had our souls leave our bodies hahaha

►LYRICS - The Old Churchyard
Come, come with me to the old churchyard
I so well know those paths beneath the soft green sward
Friends slumber there that we want to regard
We will trace out their names in the old churchyard
Mourn not for them for their trials are o'er
And why weep for those who will weep no more?
For sweet is their sleep, though cold and hard
Their pillows lay deep in the old churchyard
I know it seems vain when our friends depart
To breathe kind words to a broken heart
And I know that the joy of life, it is marred
When we follow those friends to the old churchyard
But were I at rest beneath yonder tree
Oh why would you weep, my friends, for me?
I'm so weary and worn, why would you retard
The peace that I seek in the old churchyard?
Why weep for me, for I'm anxious to go
To that haven of rest where no tears ever flow?
And I fear not to enter that dark weary tomb
Where our Savior has lain and he conquered the gloom
I rest in the hope that one bright day
Sunshine will burst through these prisons of clay
And Old Gabriel's trumpet and the voice of the Lord
They will wake up the dead in the old churchyard [x2]

Thanks, Liz!
Thank you for posting the lyrics! Such a wonderful song.
Thanks Liz!!!
Thank you Liz. A friend to us all
@@josegenaroriveraloanzon Liz, can you tell us who wrote this song? It sounds Scots to me.
That ending in the outtake… Gabriel’s trumpet blowing!!
Smiling, crying. I have loved this song for years…this is my new favorite version!
It's always a nice day when the Petersens post a new performance.
Thinking about the men and brothers that sacrificed everything while listening to this is tough but beautiful at the same time. The words hit the heart cords.
Thank you!! So glad you enjoy it!
I'm 59 years old traditional man and maybe my increasing age is what sometimes makes me feel the need to go to the kitchen to cut some onions. It's good kinds of onions, and this was one of those occasions. Beautiful presentation. Thank you.
I'm only a year ahead of you, and it had the same affect on me........ dang allergies...lol
Nothing wrong with a good Ole cry...and some onions!
Is there room for one more in the boat?
58 old school truck driver, firefighter here, you're spot on. 😪
Enjoyed that
I agree with the earlier comment that the violin sounds like a bagpipe, which gives it a Scottish kind of feel. Well done. I would bet that that train whistle got your hearts either racing or stopped altogether. Love you all!
Well it’s because she’s creating a drone.
Just beautiful! I only wish Katie and Ellen switch sides so we can see the playing of the violin and Katie’s face a little better. The train blooper was great. Way to keep the show going Katie! 🚂
The violin first made me think of a Shruti Box, which is used by some folk singers, for example in Scotland. However, the sound of the drones of a set of bagpipes makes a lot of sense, too!
Best outro ever! 😂😂😂😂 They are the BEST! ❤
So powerful a performance, with so little ornamentation. Just exceptional.
Katie is able to create the drone of a bagpipe with her fiddle. She is amazing! They're all amazing!
Yeah, spot on. But this time the Bagpipes are actually playing a tune.
Her violin is so much better than bagpipes!
Q: What is the difference between bagpipes and onions?
A: Nobody cries when they cut up some bagpipes.
Yes they are
Hoi - more respect for bagpipes please. Cannae beat the skirl o the pipes😀😀👍🏴🏴🇬🇧
Playing an open string drone is actually not at all what is difficult in her part.
So beautiful! Katy's fiddle sublimely recreates the tones from bag-pipes. Amazing.
I was just thinking it reminds me of Irish music.
OK, Irish Bagpipes
@@68corvette08Uilleann pipes also have drones.
I really like the drone effect from the fiddle. It is a lot like the sound of bagpipes.
Gee, d'ya think?
This was hypnotizing, truly. I don't listen to this sort of music typically but it came over my headphones on auto-play while at work and I had to sit down. Beautiful
Uniquely perfect as only the Petersen ladies could perform. Thanks
I think I just found my new favorite Petersen’s song. Absolutely stunning.
My ex-wife passed away from cancer less than a month ago and I’ve been mourning her loss along with my kids and grandkids. Hearing this song has brought me back to the understanding that she is truly at peace now. Thank you for sharing. God Bless you all.
Prayers lifted for you, friend. ❤ I’m so sorry for your loss.
Fantastic music. Beautiful harmony and Katie's fiddle skills never cease to amaze.
Wow! The Petersens are bluegrass for the 21st Century.
Some old timers may remember The Byrds who in some songs blended folk music and bluegrass; listening to the first few bars of this song reminded me of them a bit, joyfully.
Katie's violin playing is outstanding, no studio tricks, just pure three-dimensional sound in open air.
God Bless.
My best friend passed away last night after a long fight with brain cancer. He was just 34 years old. His wife, 6 months pregnant, and his three little ones were there by his side. Sometime the world can seem cruel and unfair. Here's to hoping for a brighter day.
May God give you all strength 🩷
Cameron, I lost my best friend on the 20th of July 2021. The hurt doesn’t get any less, just a little less often maybe. Hold the fort down for his wife and kids, they’re gonna need you. God bless. I’ll be praying from Maine.
I'm so sorry to hear that! Prayers for peace and comfort to his family and you.
I will pray for their little family. ✝️
Prayers lifted for you, friend. ❤
These 3 part harmonies melt my heart
Nothing better than family harmony!
Wonderful job. Appropriately somber, yet hopeful. Julianne's voice was excellent for the lead on this, and Katie's violin was the perfect instrument for this, particularly when played brilliantly, as it was. Ellen provided a nice lift as well. Lovely song. Lovely arrangement. I've never seen a graveyard look so good. Bless you for sharing this. One thing to add - I feel that Julianne's voice is maturing steadily. She's holding onto her unique character, but becoming a little smoother and developing a little more range. That's what it looks like to me. It's wonderful watching this family grow.
Julianne's voice is definitely maturing.... but I think the engineering is just. better in these last songs and it brings her voice forward with more strength. Very nice!
This reminds me of the day I visited such an old graveyard - and expected it to be gloomy and sad - but I felt a wave of a feeling of freedom and joy... Halleluja ! 🕊️
Love that vision!! Blessings in Christ ✝️
@@theresap3467...it was a very real, tangible impression - even some kind of blissful music seemed to be in the air there...(-Also, I had not planned to visit, I just walked by its walls and felt a strong pull to go in and then experienced this joyful vision 🌈🎶🌌
Those harmonies near the end just send chills up my spine.
Welp, it's been a while since I've been able to say it, and I'm sorry to "Down in the River to Pray" but I officially have a new favorite Petersens song! loved the Celtic sound it had with Katie's fiddle drone in the background, as well as the beautiful solo. I'm also super happy with having Julianne front and center on the mic and Ellen and Katie off to the sides, it certainly helped balance out the differences in the volume each of the girls sings at. I also can't wait for the album version of this so I can blast it in my truck without having to remember to skip at the end to avoid a train horn blowing out my speakers 😂😂 🚂
Lovely ode to the deceased. Will send to my kids to play when I'm gone!
So beautiful. Thank you so much. A real blessing.
Beautiful to hear the 5 string droning along.Sounded like a hurdy gurdy 🎼🎵🎶😊👍
So love the petersens sisters music,, Katie is a master of her 5 string fiddle, God bless the millions of good Americans❤
Great sound.. please sing this in cork next month.🤩
Katie knows that when performing ,whatever happens you just keep singing!
Amazing performance. Thanks for sharing. 👏👏
Wonderful singers. Beautiful voices of very beautiful girls. Great artists. Well done !!
I am speechless. That was very haunting with fiddle. Absolutely loved this.
The haunting beautiful melody of this song grabbed my heart and brought tears to my eyes. What harmony. Thank you
Beautiful 🥰
Haunting, yet beautiful and soothing at the same time. Thank you for another great music video.
I would like to say something about what the symbolism behind the colors of their beautiful dresses could be.
- Green: nature, growth, harmony, earthliness
- Red: love, vitality, power, the Holy Spirit
- Blue: peace, serenity, trustworthiness, ascension to Heaven
And the three are connected. Like family, like... sisters.
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it was just a random choice, but I don't think so. The Petersens' videos are always well thought out (that 'trumpet'🚆in the outro wasn't a coincidence either😁).
wow. my ears are blessed once again.
Bransons Best right there. Band, Country Show, Fiddler, Female Vocalist, Gospel Group, Matinee, Singing Group, Family Show... Petersen's are great entertainers!
This brought tears to my eyes. So beautiful!
Oh! Bagpipe Fiddle! I love it!
What a wonderful, different sound from you. How to make a violin sound like a hurdy gurdy, wow quite incredible it was ! The outtake was such fun too. Thank you for this lovely song.
You girls just outdid yourself...been following from Australia for a number of years and this is the best you have done.....take a bow...rod
Glorious! Thank you so much for sharing your music! It is a treasure!
Whoo whee! The harmony within the ole bagpipe violin to blossom into a progessive Appalachian feel is so well done, y'all!
Thank you so much 🙏.... That made my day.... God bless you and your beautiful family 😇
That's is the first time I have heard anything about you all and you are really good.❤.God bless you all.
I heard different interpretations of this beautiful ancient hymn and, I have to say the truth, I liked almost all of them.
The Petersens, however, give a splendid and unique interpretation, accompanied only by the fiddle of Katie which, with particularly low and gloomy notes (I have seen that she often plays the two lowest G-C strings) emphasizes, in some way, the theme of death contained in the song. On the contrary, the vocal interpretation, through the brilliant voices of Julianne and Ellen, brings it back in the light of the hope of resurrection and of the future life, resuming the theme of "Morningside".
All is perfect!!! The solo voices of Ellen and Julz, the harmonizations of the three sisters with Julz who holds the higher notes magnificently, the instrumental accompaniment of Katie! Then there is that fantastic fiddle solo of a truly poignant beauty, with that last note, brilliant and unexpected (Bb in Gm chord), which demonstrates, once again, Katie's great skills. 🎻
In a nutshell, it is a truly superlative version and absolutely among the best ever made. ❤
Can't beat that!😁👍🏻
@@FrankvdMuijsenberg Thanks Frank. You're too kind! But maybe you can beat it...! 😂
@@Roberto-pd8vn No 😂
Love your detailed description in this comment, Roberto! Thank you!
@@emmajo4880 Thanks Emma! You're always very kind! 🙏
Great song, and so was the trumpet at the end! All three sisters were great. Ellen's mannerisms with her hands while she's singing always shows how she always puts her whole soul into it. Katie singing loud and good while the horn was blasting cracked me up. This song was made for Julianne, and the way she sang it during the 3:10-3:20 mark, was beyond great, it was exceptional...
Absolutely heavenly song .your trio performance together 👏👏👏👏👏
I always look forward to more Petersens posts! They make me so happy!
Its always a comforting moment to stop and listen during the fast pace of the day. Thank you
The train blasting horns to interrupt y'all is a hilarious outtake!
Yes, just as they were singing about Gabriel blowing the trumpet...Perfect timing planned before the foundations of the world!
I lauged way too hard at that too!
@@stevereason6931🙏
They kept singing through the train whistle.
There's a vid around here somere's called Duet With A Train: "Orange Blossom Special" by Wanigan. Train whistle sounded right in the middle of the song. Fiddler worked it right in
Thank you Katie, Ellen, and Juliann. It's been a while since I've given you a listen. Glad I did.
Thank-you fou sharing your beautiful musical talents with us.God bless you 😊
Thank you for sharing your music with us all. I pray God blesses you all always my friends ❤
Stunning,thank you….London soon,the union chapel is a beautiful venue.
Beautiful. As is so often the case, I put on your songs to play in the background of my work and end up focusing entirely on the song instead of the work. What a marvel! God bless you all.
Much love from Croatia, Europe ❤ Since my dad passed away 4 months ago I've been listening to you every night before sleep. Thanks a lot and so lovely seeing you grow closer and better in music!
They can do no wrong. Every vid a classic
Girl in red is an absolute SMOKESHOW!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
The girl in the red, little miss Julianne has indeed blossomed to be the equal of her older sisters; but the middle sister on the left, the mother of the darling Macy, Ellen likewise is a good and equally beautiful lady; and the eldest violinist and matching in timbre vocalist to her younger sisters, Katie must be included in three remarkable and lovely and talented and impossible to over-praise, all still so young and winsome ladies, singing a macabre, and yet not, song worthy of reflection by all young, middle-aged and older.
"Old Gabriel's Trumpet" in the credits is a little "over the top"... ;)
A wonderful song that you sang magnificently with an "Irish touch". Also wonderful to hear just you three sisters. Katie, I admire how you can sing to the violin, and then without the intonation suffering. The "flat" note at the end of the fiddle solo is surprising, but great!
Thank you!
If you close your eyes while listening, you can imagine yourself to be seated in some old Irish or Scottish tavern, where the locals sing their enchanting melodies.
Three beautiful ladies and a beautiful tune.
Very nice, with a distinctly Celtic feel to the production. Also one of the best out takes for a while😄.
The Petersen’s never disappoint…I just love you guys🥰
That was amazing… thank you.
Great old Hymn Katies playing double stops gives that beautiful groan like a bagpipe. It is nice to see Julianne dressed up as her sisters are.
The fifth low string sings sooo beautifull ❤❤.
Well done Katie. 😊
4 tickets purchased for the show on August 19th in Paris. We cancelled our holidays to see you and we are very happy about it.
Hey guys I'm just sat here listening to some of my faves of yours, my absolute faves are your yodelling songs, they melt my heart 💛 pls can I request a few songs that you could do a cover of, firstly "he taught me to yodel" 2nd "the cowboy yodel" and 3rd "cattle call" I know you would do them all fantastically👌 if I could choose just one of them as asking for all is a bit cheeky lol it would have to be cattle call, I know cattle call isn't really a yodelling song but its close, pls pls pls would you consider them, it would make me soo happy to hear you all singing my 3 favourites, 🤞 Xx
I'm glad they have stayed true to themselves. Beautiful!
YES YES YES
Bravo! Just awesome! I just Loved this performance so much!!🥰🎶
That fiddle sounds like cello & pipes! Great job!
I thought bagpipes! But cello didn't occur to me until you mentioned it. Yes, cello!
These three young ladies are the epitome of christian decency. The fiddle sounded as an orchestra this time..Gave me goosebumps...Brilliant!
Held my breath, lovely trio of voices!
The train in the blooper section is just funny, and I love each of your reactions. Your dresses are beautiful as are you.
Your family is a special blessing from God. What a great song, I’ll be listening to it for years to come…
That wa just beautiful and maybe my favorite song you girls have done. Sounded very very Irish as well. Just lovely. I keep replaying it.
I'm so glad I'm a lot older than the Petersen siblings. Because of this, I will be able to keep enjoying their new performances for rest of my life.
Their choice of works as well as their original works set to their arrangements, along with their re-arrangements of pieces of exceptional value from other areas of musical endeavors into classic Petersen exemplary masterpieces can bless all the world over time during their slow but inevitable expositional encroachment upon all of us who appreciate music done so enjoyable with their flair and their caring,... usually followed by a little of their Petersen whimsy, such as here with the final verse of the tune sung as interrupted.
😂
One of my very favorite religious folk hymns! A fantastic rendition.
wonderful, absolutely wonderful, thank you!
Somehow I blame Matt for the train. Seriously ladies, that was so beautiful. So many great treasures among the old folk songs. I love all of the Petersen's Band, but I am always so taken by the sound of the three of you. Whatever the blend of instruments. The glorious sound of your voices blending is simply awesome. Thank you all for the gift of another video. Hope you all are having a great summer. Stay safe and well!
I always marvel at how Katie's fiddle seems like a part of her - so beautiful, and this is extraordinary! Ladies, you all sound so wonderful!
This is so beautiful and inspirational. A genuinely great job singing by the three lovely Petersen's sisters Julianne, Ellen and Katie, with Julianne in the lead, along with some real magic from Katie's Fiddle! You have to listen to this as it is AMAZING IN EVERY WAY!
So beautiful! Thank you for sharing your faith with us!
I like the way you were storytelling the song. I couldn't stop listening.
Dear Petersens, This was *perfectly stunning*... very moving. Yes, the invoking bagpipe fiddle-droning of Katies powerful accompaniment indeed flows so well. Lyrically the story conveyed is so beautifully 🪻🌹🌲 timelessly classic. Gorgeous to me it is near-showstopping in its utter greatness 🎉 🤯 Cheers and blessings belived clan!!!
Y’all are such sweet and beautiful people. Thanks for being such great examples. 😊
Vielen vielen Dank!
Ganz großartig und einfühlsam musiziert und gesungen!
Liebe Grüße aus Iserlohn Deutschland Ernst Klar
OMG! I loved this soooOOOOooOOOoooo much! Angelic tongs foretold the future for those who passed, before us! BRAVO!
Beautiful and classy 😊
3 beautiful sister with magnificent voice, God bless you ! ❤
Beautifully done.
Emocionante. Preciosa canción. Me calleron las lágrimas. Gracias. Cpmpatro este video.
Thank you Ladies for that engaging song. Lovely voices and singing together. Katie you can really bring that fiddle to life (in the old churchyard)
The violin certainly has a drone effect and keeps this in the zone of 'a cappella' --just enough to support the vocals.
Absolutely beautiful. I love that you left the blooper at the end!! You're all so amazing and i loved hearing your laughter!! ❤️
I get goosebumps every time the three Petersen sisters sing together. Thank you ladies !
I'm loving the Irish vibes I'm getting from this song. Thanks for sharing!
Your dresses are so beautiful. and I am happy to see the sisters singing together. With Down the river this is only the second time.
You young ladies are so beautiful!!! And I love to hear the 3 of you singing together!!!
But that last part was a “ train wreck “ 😂😂😂
Not that the brother and friend are not great (they are) but sometimes I like just the gals!
What a beautiful beautiful song! You all are amazing! Julianne has such a beautiful voice!
