Yup, know Carmel property owners, and we go shopping in Monterey. Didn't eat out with them as both liked to cook. Deck or patio with blue water views under tall shady trees. What's not to like ?
@@mmakotal4388 Also, the slaughter of the native people against native people. The Portola Expedition diaries by several people on their two land expeditions mention a few of the villages were abandoned due to turmoil. It was not all love and peace before the white dudes showed up. Trust me.
I was stationed in the Naval Postgraduate School in the city of Monterey as a 24 yr old in the mid 90s, and I sure got a good dose of Monterey, CA. Lived in nearby Marina and walked it's cold beaches, slept in my car overnight at the vista view of Bixby Bridge, dinners on Cannery Row, frequent visits to Carmel and drives down Big Sur on Hwy 1 all the way to Morro Bay. Breathtaking sceneries that will never be erased in my memory.
Lived there a year with the military 2009-2010. Loved it. My favorite climate. Scenic. I miss seeing sunsets on the beach. The assorted marine life was pretty neat.
Personally, I prefer abode cut to enlarge natural sandstone rock shelters. Takes about 3 years of day labor for one person. The sandstone must be solid as the layered type will collapse. I also know of a bay-side natural sea cave having a locked steel framed metal door at cavern rear. The stone was Monterey Shale. Softer than sandstone. 'Hmm', I said.
A drop dead gorgeous place! One thing to consider before going, this place has a cool summer climate so be sure to take a light jacket. I was floored that in the middle of July the high's were only in the 60's, and the lows in the lower 50's. Us east coasters are not use to that in summer :)
It's the morning fog that makes it so cool. All one has to do to get away from that is head a little ways inland toward Salinas or up the Carmel Valley.
The Costanoan Tribe shared that thought. Until enslaved by troops out of Mexico. Assisted by paroled convicts from Northern Mexico. Obliged to assist the Catholic Church clerics. I was raised here. Had to leave because of how expensive it is, but it is a great and beautiful coastal city with lots to do and see. If you are lucky enough to move here I wish you all the best.
For herpers there is the Monterey ensatina salamander and the Monterey ring-necked snake. And of course alligator lizards, blue bellies, western skinks, slender salamanders, Pacific tree frogs, gopher snakes, sharp-tailed snakes, multiple species of garter snakes, and several other reptile and amphibian species that can be found both on the Monterey Peninsula and in nearby areas such as the Carmel Marsh or in the Carmel Valley and inland toward Salinas and in the Coast Range mountains there.
Yup, good place for snorkel swim over sunk vessels. Metal detect militaria found about Fort Ord. What 17 mile Drive won't show passer-by is the Frank S. Buck, broken into 3 hull segments, offshore. Another wreck location is in knee to hip deep water all over the sand bottom in pieces near the popular golf location.
We live about an hour away and used to go every year. A must visit city in California. You can visit a monarch butterfly refuge, go watch the otters relaxing in the bay, and explore one of the best aquariums in the world. Honestly it’s probably famous for the aquarium alone. And if it’s not the aquarium to get giddy about, then let me tell you there’s nothing like a Monterey meal. Seriously. I have no idea why the food is so good down in Monterey. Maybe it’s the smell of the ocean that helps
My dad was in the military and I lived there in the 60s - in Seaside and Fort Ord. It looked nothing like this. They have really made it lovely. I plan on revisiting Monterey and taking in its beauty one day.
There are a lot of old western movies about Monterey, CA. A lot are from Republic films and I have several copies of movie videos but one I just can't get my hand on: Pirates of Monterey. What a fascinating history with the Old West, Wild West, and Pirates (okay, one pirate, but he had a crew).
The Old Capital of The Californias and Alta California. Imagine, this tiny city had a French Consulate at one time. The land area of Alta California extended well into areas of modern day Colorado and New Mexico.
Just to be clear----this is not a video or commentary about Monterey, it's of the whole Big Sur coast from far south to Monterey. So, as grand as this coast is, the video shows many miles of coastline that are not close to Monterey. Now, go for a great drive along Highway 1. It's worth the drive.
Have you ever visited Monterey? What’s your favorite thing to do in this sunny Californian city?
It's in my list. Plan to visit it one day.

I’m so blessed to live here where the beauty is immense. I’m grateful to have eyes to see it all and to breathe the fresh ocean air.
Been living here since 86. One thing that you forgot to mention was that Monterey was the first capital of California.
