    Looks like Cinestyle for the darker scenes and c-log for the more lit to retain the highlights.

  • @ColinBloodworth

    Yooo, that LUT on the Cinestyle is really good. People go ham for EOSHD but I've honestly never been overly impressed with it. Especially not with a pricetag as opposed to free Cinestyle or the in-camera profiles... I know it's not correct to use, but in good lighting, I like how washed out Cinestyle is. It looks dreamy to me. We have so many vibrant greens here that even when they're crushed for the flat profile, they still come through and are almost accentuated in contrast to the greys and brown which are crushed as well.
    Great video comparison, dude.

    Hello Nigel Barros (and anyone else who is reading this),
    Here is my recommendation when shooting compressed H.264 video with Canon DSLRs (works with motion jpeg as well),
    Go into your picture styles on any Canon DSLR, choose Faithful, use these settings: 0 for Sharpness, 0 for Contrast, -2 for Saturation, 0 for Color Tone. Then white balance using a grey card. Then expose to the right (ETTR), and decide what you are willing to have blown out using Zebras (night lights or the sun, etc.). Then in post production, use Leeming LUT Pro by Paul Leeming and you will now have accurate REC 709 with maximum dynamic range. The modified Faithful picture style works great in low light, unlike C-Log. Paul Leeming also has a Facebook group. He is very quick about answering any questions you might have before purchasing this LUT (you also get Quickie LUTs included). I cannot recommend this enough. I found my colors were a lot better, and looked more professional for concerts. The best part about his system, is you can use multiple cameras, even different branded cameras, and all can apply this LUT for accurate REC 709.
    Here are a few links: www.leeminglutpro.com/

    In your tests, Cinestyle had the most dynamic range . However, if you try either Lightform C ($7), or VisionColor's CineTech ($15), you will see that these have 1 stop more dynamic range over Cinestyle still. Buying these was one of my smartest decisions for my 5 Canon cameras, not only because of the added DR, but also because these are filmic by design, so you don't need to over-color grade afterwards (since Canon's h.264 8bit falls apart with grading). You can check my dynamic range test on my channel.

    I really wish we could have seen more of that highlight roll off test. The CLOG did really great with that, but since Cinestyle basically came out as the winner, it would have been really useful to see how that performed in the same situation

    5:00 There is a huge difference!! :D
    "C-LOG" messes up the footage, you actually have more details with Neutral picture profile. On the other hand, the Cinestyle gives you a better dynamic range, but boosts colors a lot, which might be an issue. When you add contrast back to the footage, your colors will be more vibrant then ever. You might have to tweek the colors too to desaturate the colors a bit to get a natural looking footage.

    • @NKM_Pixels
      @NKM_Pixels 2 года назад +1

      which one are ypu using? i have used cinestyle clog. the footage is not that sharp. i want to try neutral if its better than these two. help!!

    • @anhellehna6858
      @anhellehna6858 2 года назад

      @@NKM_Pixels I've tried the Cinestyle for the experimental purposes, but ended up not using it since years anymore, because of its nonsensical workflow requirements.
      At the end of the whole research, observation and experience, I decided not to use any of the external picture profiles, which would lengthen my overall production workflow without any clear benefits.
      Basically, I use the picture profile "neutral" for most of the times, including professional and semi-professional works.
      You might also be able to adjust the settings of individual picture profiles (sharpness, saturation etc.) according to your taste right in the camera as long as your camera has that function.
      Overall, I would recommend to experiment on your own and decide which one works best for you.
      If you are someone who likes to spend a lot of time on the postproduction by doing a lot of color correction and color grading, then you may like to go with flat picture profiles. If you are someone who wanna have things done in a short amount of time without a lot of hassle, then choose one of the presets and let it roll.
      I would suggest to try both in separate projects to see which workflow is the most optimal one for you. No matter which one you choose, don't forget to enjoy!! ;)

On the cinestyle profile did you use their recommended settings (sharp, contrast and saturation all the way down)? Same questions for EOSHD C-LOG from Andrew. Thanks a lot and great video! Great comparison, thank you. May I ask, what LUT did you use on top of all three to show us the comparison? I am stumped at the beginning adjustment I should be using with cinestyle? I liked how it looked good on CLog Andrew Reed's too. Is it the GC Cinestyle Rec 709? Then after you use the base, do you use a specific set of creative LUTS? I shoot with a Canon 5d Mark iv. Thanks in advance if you see this and respond.

  • @cyantique1064
    @cyantique1064 6 лет назад +1

    Cinestyle is a very old profile now and dates back to before cinema eos and most critically before canon log on the 1DC. Also cinestyle does not match the curve of canon log. I prefer the picture profile from james miller, in my opinion is much better than cinestyle, there are 3 option picture profiles from james miller, the first one is c-log neutral v1 with highlight roll-off, the second one c-log neutral v2 doesn't have the highlight roll-off and little more pronounced, the third option is c-log3 is more of a traditional log with less contrast and a little less gray but slightly different from the eosHD c-log. And I used c-log neutral v1 with turn down the saturation is set to -2.

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  6 лет назад +2

      Samuel Agung yeah I know, I used cinestyle way back in the t2i days, but I still think it’s performance varies depending on the camera. I chose eoshd c-log because it was based off the 1dc c-log, which I liked. I might try the ones by James miller but honestly for most of my work cinestyle and the canon profiles work just fine for me.

    Do you see that much of an improvement comparing 80D to something old like T2i? Besides build quality, AF and low light it's basically the same technology they used 8 years or so ago. To me some really old Panasonic cameras like GH2 or GH3 are waaaay better than this. Image quality wise they are still years behind Panasonic or Sony. I'm so happy that I've upgraded from Canon 550D to Panasonic G7 and now I'm really close to pulling the trigger on GH3 as my B cam (mostly thanks to your videos).

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  6 лет назад

      Maciej Kobus yeah the improvement is minimal but the 80D and newer canon cameras are definitely sharper than older camera like the T2i. The Panasonic cameras have an upper hand in image detail but I think the biggest think is that Panasonic lenses and other micro 4/3 lenses are just sharper than most canon lenses, the cheap 14mm is miles sharper than any cheap canon lenses typically. Don’t get me wrong I loved the Gh3 and if I ever had to start from scratch again I’d probably go back to Panasonic, but the autofocus of the canons is just really nice to have. Thanks for tuning in!

    • @maciejkobus
      @maciejkobus 6 лет назад

      I'm wondering if Panasonic will come up with an improved AF in upcoming GH6 and in the successor to G85 or G7. If they do I'd say there would be no solid reasons to choose Canon over Panasonic. Anyway, that's an interesting point regarding lens sharpness. Would be nice to see a direct comparison between two systems with the same lens.
      Are you thinking about getting Sigma 18-35mm for your 80D?

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  6 лет назад

      Maciej Kobus yes I’m actually in the market for a sigma soon! I would also say the canon color science is a really attractive feature for some too but never really was a must have for me. My problem with Panasonic’s is that for the cheaper ones that aren’t the GH5 or 5s, so for the g7 and g85 the 4k is cropped too much for me, so keeping a rig small isn’t as easy cause a speedbooster is needed to get a wide angle shot in 4k. The g9 was one that really intrigued me cause it had better AF performance but for me the new bmpcc 4k seems more appealing for a around the same price

    • @maciejkobus
      @maciejkobus 6 лет назад +1

      Crop is something I wouldn't take as an disadvantage. Example: as a skate filmer (guess why I watch your videos :D) I need as widest fisheye as I can get. WIth MFT I can use a focal reducer which gives me 1.5x crop in 1080p. With my Samyang 8mm f/3.5 I get wider image than I was getting on my Canon 550D. It's actually comparable or wider than HPX+Xtreme combo which is the most popular setup among HD skate filmers. So I'd say MFT is great for filming skateboarding - cheap cameras, cheap fisheye options etc.
      But I get your point. I believe a successor to G85/G7 with 2.0x crop in 4K will make sense with cheap focal reducers.
      BMPCC4K intrigues me most due to the 5 inch display. Damn... 3" displays are too small for cameras! I have hard times focusing on those. The fact I can't use HDMI display with the G7 is making things worse.
      Not wasting more of your time. Keep your videos coming. Currently I'm digging your content the most and always wait for new videos.

      La Canon 80D es una gran cámara, auto enfoque preciso y muy completa, solo que no graba en 4K. Yo soy usuario de este modelo y estoy muy feliz con los resultados. Te la recomiendo. Saludos desde Colombia

      If you have poor light cinemastyle and all kinds of flat profiles become noisy and if you use a high non-native ISO it gets shittier as fuck

    @NigelBarros I really need your help. I downloaded a Eoshd c-log toy camera and I really don’t know how to use it. I understand it’s flat images but how do you boost the photo back up ???? Also shooting in M,Tv,P etc comes our flat,it dark but I honestly don’t know how to use it. Please help because I’m just thinking to delete this.

      don't use flat picture style/ c-log for photo, if you bought eosHD picture profile, then for doing photo shoot you can choose other picture style like scarlett, vivid skintone, chrome, cinema 3, if you have any problem with the colors then you can setting manually adjust the contrast saturation color tone in picture style setting.
      How to fix oversaturated and punchy skintone on these custom picture profiles:
      - Cinema 3: saturation -4, color tone +1
      - Cinema 4: saturation -4, color tone +1
      - Scarlett: saturation -4, color tone +1
      - Vivid Skintone: saturation -4, color tone -1
      - Chrome: only color tone 0
      - C-log: only color tone +1 (because +2 makes the skintone looks blotchy also too much dark greens) My Sharpness Strength : +1 (because in-camera sharpness is much cleaner and un-artificial looking when compared to using the unsharp mask in post edit, setting below +1 seems to almost blur the image. and finally fixed everything, hope it helps :)

      Samuel Agung I need like a video tutorial of this. Only half of this I understood I’m sorry. I started this in my own so it’s hard understanding these settings and knowing where to go. I factory reset my camera. I’ll try to upload it my camera again and see. But I didn’t see those different picture style all I was on was the c-log setting. I didn’t get the setting where I got different picture styles to try, it was only one setting and all my pictures taken in other modes except for portrait mode came out flat and dark.

      NigelBarros so do you rent when you need to do works for tv commercials to get the required colorspace?

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  6 лет назад +2

      Jason DeGarmo yes typically I rent on any high budget shoot, whether it’s lenses or camera systems. But the majority of my work is promotional content for small businesses, weddings and short docs. I’ve never done anything for TV so I’ve never needed a camcorder or cinema camera with those color features

      Jason DeGarmo the G85. doesn't overheat, no record limit, clean HDMI out (in need case you want to stream) and the kit lens is great.

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  6 лет назад +1

      Андрей Харитонов I think it’s mostly due to the cheap lenses I’ve been using

    • @KharytonovYouTube
      @KharytonovYouTube 6 лет назад

      maybe, but canon do worse detail than lumix and sony (excepy "C" series and 1dx ) but it is another price)
      (sorr
      y for my poor english :) )

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  6 лет назад +1

      Андрей Харитонов well kind, Ive shot with a c100 before and the detail isn’t very different from an 80D, just the codec and real c-log. I think with the same lens, the c100 and 80d would look pretty similar, I might do this test soon to see if I’m right I’m thinking this. Thanks for tuning in!
