- Hey Guys! So, today is a craft kit review. I decided to test out this pottery kit I found at walmart called "My Very Own Pottery Wheel" (obviously geared toward kids, but hey....). As a complete NEWB with pottery, I thought maybe starting out with a kit like this would be a good starting point for a beginner.
I always get so excited for these type of kits where you are given the tools to make something, but you can also use your own creativity. I am always looking for new painting projects and different things to decorate. Like all the other kit reviews I have done so far, it doesn't go completely according to plan. Is it just me, or are all these kits terri-BOWL?!?!?!

I'm a pottery student and according to the fact that this is your first time with ceramic, you actually did pretty good. We had to work with our hands for one year and then they let us use the pottery wheel in the second year.

This was one of the first videos I watched of moriahs after seeing her do the first squishy makeovers we all know and love today. After I watched this video I was OBSESSED with the idea of making pottery. After a couple of months my mom found a pottery class for kids and teens. I have been taking that class for about 3-4 years now and I am almost certain I will be doing pottery for the rest of my life as either a full time job or a hobby. I was recently gifted my very own pottery wheel and I have never been happier. Thank you so much moriah, I loved your videos then and I love them now. Thank you ❤️

After taking pottery classes and throwing pots, I think you did an amazing job! It's not easy, seriously! Even when you are in a class and have professional equipment it doesn't work out at least half the time. Lol. You did well! as someone who took a ceramics class, Im here to say a potter’s wheel takes awhile to learn. its really difficult.
I took a college course in ceramics and I was cringing constantly. However, it wasn't a bad job for someone who never did it before, didn't have proper instructions, and was working with terrible equipment.
I took a ceramics club so ya,i agree with you.
I was basically the worst there lol

I got a pottery kit like this that was missing some pieces so I had to use my hands for it. It actually worked fairly well.

potters do sand their pottery! it makes everything a lot smoother and nicer to handle, so ur right about that! the air drying thing is weird though, hope you haven't used the mug because that does not seem safe lol

I've actually done pottery before and yes, they do use sandpaper to fix up the pot or dish with sandpaper

Hi, I take pottery classes, and I can say first hand that wheel thrown pottery is a lot harder than it looks, especially with that crappy kit.
You never mentioned anything about centering the clay, which means that the kit never mentioned it. Which is a shame, because that is literally the most important part of pottery. If your clay isn't centered on the wheel, It's going to look wonky no matter what you do.
The kit didn't tell you to rest your elbows on your hips or the edge of the wheel. Having steady hands is important, because it ensures that you control the clay, and not the other way around.
You said that the wheel didn't spin very fast, which also makes the process more difficult.
Now, I will say that if you do this again, by following a youtube video's instructions or something, DO NOT SAND THE CLAY. At least, not without some sort of mask. Perhaps this clay is safe, i don't know, but with the clay I use in my classes (which we have to bake) breathing in the dust that sanding creates can give you cancer.
Genuinely, though, I think your pots turned out very cute, especially after the paint jobs. They're wonky, but cute.
Honestly, this kit should be considered a scam for how easy it makes pottery look.

Trust me, a real ceramic wheel is just as hard. It helps to have a sponge and to keep the sponge wet at all times. I have many cups bowls and mugs I made in that class. But my teacher taught at a collage level, and I was pretty good at it. Lol I loved doing it. It was fun. Even the mess.

A agree that a real wheel can be pretty hard but that kit spun wayyyy to slow actually create anything lmao. Lowkey I miss doing ceramics though, it’s so fun.
