  • Methane is the second most abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gas with 30 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. Curbing methane emissions from oil and gas industries offers an near-term, impactful opportunity to slow climate change. Right now, fuel production releases a substantial amount of methane into the atmosphere each year, but these leaks are localized, intermittent, and dominated by the 10 percent of “super-emitters” who account for more than half of all emissions. However, our current methane monitoring capabilities are insufficient for identifying and stopping these leaks, as detailed in the 2022 APS/Optica Report on the subject.
