Curbing Methane Emissions

Methane is the second most abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gas with 30 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. Curbing methane emissions from oil and gas industries offers an near-term, impactful opportunity to slow climate change. Right now, fuel production releases a substantial amount of methane into the atmosphere each year, but these leaks are localized, intermittent, and dominated by the 10 percent of “super-emitters” who account for more than half of all emissions. However, our current methane monitoring capabilities are insufficient for identifying and stopping these leaks, as detailed in the 2022 APS/Optica Report on the subject.
