Ha! Good work. Got caught in Vinisce last September, in Squalls. Had a good overnight, others did not. Left early to get ahead of the coming mid morning squall forecasts. Making for Maslinica and the squals came early! Lounge cushion off the bow but, as you said, preparedness helps, i hove to and drifted right back to the location and crew hooked them easily. It was an intense morning there .... no one was leaving Marina Maslinica ..... tortuous maneuvering to keep position to get called in as soon as there was an opening. Finally received the call , outside of breakwater, next to shore. 😮 I took it and we slid in hot and then heavy on forward to stop and the line handlers on pier were brilliant as was my bow gal and the marina fellow in the dinghy. Wind dropped, sun out and celebratory margaritas immediately. Training is everything and I've huge gratitude for my mentors allowing me to handle these situations. 😊
That is excellent! Nice work. Nice nerve to come in and do what is needed. I remember that squall, I was entering Nečujam as it was rolling down the island over Maslinica. Alen said that they got 60 knots!

We have been sitting it out in Venice for the past couple of days and will head across the Adriatic to the North on Friday when it settles. 40 knot winds predicted today. Lots of logs coming down the rivers after these storms. We have also been dodging them.
I’m totally amazed by this. On the same day we were routing Kornati to Milna in what appeared to be entirely calm conditions. Scary that this stuff can come out of nowhere! And as you said somewhere else, these seem to be more and more unpredictable. Great footage though!!
Yes it is a crazy one! Always remember that 'a mass creates' when thinking of weather. So any system hitting or coming close to high mountains will have a significant impact on its behaviour
Vinisce is quite closed and protected bay but the winds can still get very strong. The storms in Croatia are always announced on the weather forecast on WHF. Always keep an eye on the forecast when sailing in Croatia as we get some really strong summer storms sometimes. Most of the time you can hide in some protected bay and avoid it.
Wow, that looks like fun. :) If you have other similar footage it would be interesting to hear some advice on how to manage such short but intense squalls in Croatia.

Well that looked a bit intense. Great job staying calm and in control. Amazing how fast those can come in. I always call them micro bursts when they are super intense but short lived, probably not the correct term though. Was hard to tell what your situation was before the weather hit. Were you sailing then saw it coming and just ducked into there for shelter? Or was it a no warning situation?

I do not get if you are motoring and keeping the distance from the shore or you just stay adrift and let the wind do whatever it wants. What is the best option when hitting a squall? Stay at anchor? Motor?
Really depends on your situation. If at anchor a a safely anchored. Stay at anchor for sure. If at anchor and concerned it’s dragging. You can assist the anchor with the engine to take some of the dragging pressure off. If at sea/underway take a good position fix and account for surrounding traffic before the visibility deteriorates and head away from land. Drop sail or reef down hard before it hits if possible.
I'd say if you're at anchor, make damn sure that your anchor holds, don't trust it! Next best option: strike sails and motor into the wind, if possible. Third option: set minimum sails (storm sails if possible) and ride it out or heave to if you have the room. We've caught a Bora once in Croatia and our anchors broke (two of them), it was not pretty!
You have to take into consideration that 40ft mono/cats typically do not produce enough power to some of the winds speeds that squalls can reach (for example August 2023 Croatia), so if you need to be at sea try to position yourself in a way that wind drifts you toward open sea and not land. Get the bimini and sprayhood down if possible to avoid damage. Wear scuba mask for visibility. Instruct crew to sit safely inside saloon to avoid physical injury from heeling/waves. Boat in this video is pretty robust and with a strong engine, sometimes just a couple feet of genoa might give you the needed power to maintain course.

Ya use weather tools to avoid getting surprised. If you do, heave-to if you have the drift room. If not you are going to have a hell of a time trying to head into the wind and get sails down..

Using a standard delta. Anchor was it’s not resetting on the wind shift as I would have liked and given our position at the time we were just lifting to re drop.
Agreed. And we were not in danger as such. In an anchorage, was just lifting to re-drop anchor in the morning due to the wind shift. Then this hit. In this case the time it would have taken me to get to the bunk and put it on then back up would have potentially put us on the bricks on the land or hit another yacht. As much as it looks dangerous in the video it was just a bit of rain and wind in enclosed waters. If we had of seen it coming, then yes lifejackets for sure as a precaution.
agree. I've sailed across the Atlantic. away from rescue. we had 44 - 60 for 6 Days and nights. this was close to shore and temporary. if you love your friends and family have PFD n iperb on. or not, and let your ponytail fly.
@@celticspike7 one slip and it can go sideways really quick. We just had a bag go overboard and didn’t all get our jackets on with trying to retrieve it, but looking back it was a jackets first and then start recovery. Learning/practice moment :)

We were lifting anchor already when the squall hit. So only 15m of chain left to bring up, therefore no holding.
A rather surreal aspect to that was the seeming flatness of the water which looked so out of place against the gust
Yes I hear you! We were in a very protected anchorage. So the fetch was all of .. 300m at the time.
