至少对我来说,可能说母语会展现出你的主要角色/性格primary character,然后呢次要语言会展现出另一个在不同环境下培养出来的角色-- does that makes sense? hahahahahah, obviously my Chinese isn't as good as my English. What I meant was, the mother tongue holds our cultural identity, emotions and life experiences since birth thus, it's easier to display their true and natural character when speaking our mother tongue. And with a secondary language, we might be influenced by different cultural backgrounds and contexts, gradually developing another role or personality! Either way, both are still you! 还有Dave的bar,这个月有机会就去探店!装饰感觉好酷哇哈哈哈哈哈 Great video! Thank you for hard work!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! That makes a lot of sense - when I speak Chinese my personality is more a reflection of the part of my life spent in Chinese, shaped by my family, and when I speak English it's more reflective of my "acquired" personality, shaped by my experiences in English - perhaps that's why I feel more comfortable vlogging in English, because that's the person I chose to become. nugget will be open this month Thu-Sun 5pm onwards @泮塘五约涌边街4号 - but it'll be closed this week b/c Dave is on tour again. 谢谢支持 希望可以碰到你~
I'm so happy you did a vlog in Chinese, I studied Chinese and this is such a nice way to brush up on it! Also was so excited to see your boyfriend is Irish, like me!!
Greetings from Singapore. I understand both English and Mandarin but most Singaporeans (myself included) can't speak with your level of refinement and confidence in both languages. Hat's off to you for a job well done. Continue to have the same confidence in your videos.
I'm so very flattered! I went to Singapore for the first time when I was in 6th grade, and was blown away by how people are so multilingual there. You guys are my inspiration!
I love how you describe your English speaking self represents more of a acquired personality. That’s such an elegant way to put it. I also moved to a English setting in my teens. I find it interesting that I can talk about things in English which I don’t feel as comfortable talking in Chinese. When speaking English, it almost feels like a 1.5th narrative, a slightly different personality, so I’m sharing my stories and thoughts through a medium of a lens. This might not make any sense at all but thanks again for sharing Evelyn!
Same! I go to therapy in English because I'm unable to talk about feelings in Chinese...but strangely I feel more vulnerable in Chinese because of the lack of a medium
I was about to say that you have the same personality when speaking both english and chinese and then you asked that on the vlog 😂 I feel like I am two totally different people when speaking english and chinese!
hahah I actually feel like different people too! Like the core part of me feels the same, but speaking English/Chinese brings out different parts of me, and I can't quite tell what...Do you feel like speaking German brings out a different personality too?👀
Evelyn, your energy and editing are just beautiful! Chinese was my first language but I'm so out of practice - it's so lovely to hear you two speak casually. Just subscribed and I see your channel going so far -- keep going
I love hearing you speak Chinese! As an ABC, I can speak Cantonese fluently and some Mandarin. I've been trying to deepen my connection with my culture and language, and hope to visit China one day, so I'm so glad to have found your channel!!! 🥰 Your videos bring me so much comfort and I appreciate your vulnerability always - esp in the reconnecting with family one and this one!
sorry if this question is offensive or something, but I'm really curious how Dave got his visa while working (I belive) as a musician/barista? I thought it was really hard to get one in china if u r not a student or office worker (?)
Dave here; I set up my own bar/cultural company, nugget records, which I then used to employ myself as an owner. It's easy enough to do (though costs some money if you use an agent), as you renew your visa each year the government will want to see you're paying some tax, earning some money, so it has to be a legitimate business that's earning some money every month!
@lostmemorymachine Dave, fellow Irish man here. Just wanna say this is the most inspiring thing I've heard in a long time. I lived in China for a few years 10 years ago and have always wanted to move back. It's literally my dream to move back. But the problem has always been 'how?'. I absolutely hate English teaching, I did it for a year in Shanghai and it crushed my soul so hard, so I could never subject myself to that again. But aside from English teaching, it seemed like (at least when I was there) the only other jobs for foreigners were things like architecture, engineering, computer science and some other high end corporate work. I don't have the skills or experience to do any of that stuff and at my age (33) I have no intention of going back to college to do a degree in computer science. I work in ICT/healthcare but my passion is music, working on my debut album currently. Would it be possible to get in touch some time and have a small conversation about how you get set up over there? I'm really hoping to do the same myself. Hope to hear from you, kind regards, B.
I loved the little snippet in your video when you were wondering whether your personality is different when you speak in Chinese versus English. I really enjoy hearing your musings or your “in-progress” thoughts, perhaps because they aren’t definitive and instead retain a sense of wonder and curiously about life and the world. I leave your videos reflecting on the questions you are asking yourself and think about how they apply to my own life. I’d love to hear you talk more about what home means to you, especially since you are going to create a new home somewhere else in the future. Keep up the good work!
really appreciate this comment...I keep youtube as sort of an open diary, and I'm very very grateful that you are interested in hearing my "in-progress" thoughts. I get a lot of inspirations from the comment section too. We are building a little community together, and inspiring each other. I love that. Thank you!
When you speak Chinese you have a cute voice!! While when you speak English your voice tends to be more mature, it probably has to do with the fact that you used these two languages in different environment. I have the privilege of being multilingual too and they definitely shows a different side of my personality everytime i switch language ahahaha
That’s what most of my friends say about me speaking Chinese vs English! I have different accents too when I speak Chinese…in this video I’m using my de-accented Chinese, but when I go back home and speak with my parents I have a different Chinese accent, which reflects more of my childhood personality - but I like the person I am today much better…
i have pretty similar experience as you too. And somehow, for some reason, I felt extra grateful for being able to speak both English and Mandarin (considerably) well recently! Jia you, Evelyn!! I love watching all your vlogs
谢谢❤️it's definitely a journey coming to terms with my language, culture, and identity. Still exploring it and learning so much every day. Thank you so much for coming along!
I'm so happy you did a vlog in Chinese (even though my Chinese is not good enough to understand 80% of it). Your personality sounds the same to me in both languages but for some people I notice it sounds different. Perhaps it is because your fluency in both is very high? Also, as a native English speaker, your English sounds perfect to the point I would barely know that it's your second language. But I know we are all harsh on ourselves when it comes to second languages 🥰
I actually found Lost Memory Machine long before I ever stumbled upon your channel (serendipitously)! Love all of their songs so much that I've been shoving it in all my friends' and followers' faces. Didn't know you were together at all until watching this video -- what a lovely thing to find out! I think it is so lucky and amazing that he also speaks Mandarin so well! Also, this made me so nostalgic for China and I can't wait to go back again soon. :')
Amazing video!! Well done! My husband and I are raising our kids to be trilingual in Russian, Mandarin and English and I really hope that my children will one day be able to communicate confidently in Mandarin like Dave :DDD 谢谢你的分享!!
I can relate with having different personalities in different languages! My mother tongue is Thai but after spending years overseas, most of the books I read, especially those on self-development and spirituality, are in English. So, when it comes to those terms/ideas/feelings I discovered in the books that speak right to my heart, I tend to use the English words first and then translate it into Thai to people around me. This is even more true when it comes to Japanese words. So many words have its own complicated meaning that does not have an equivalence in English nor Thai. So, I ended up using Japanese in certain moments too (even to those who don't know Japanese -- but are close enough to me to wait and listen to me explains. Haha). I think you seem more confident when speaking in English, but that could also be because you were speaking in your own home/alone, whereas this one is a travel vlog. Look forward to more videos in Chinese too! I know that it is not the focus of your channel but it sounds fun. Btw, I like your videos! I came across the "a day in a life without a job" video you released 2 months ago today and was surprised that you only had 8,000 subscribers then but now that has grown to over 36,000. (Congratulations!) I then checked your shorts and noticed that you have a really candid but pleasant style! Was really impressed by how meticulous and honest you were in your weekly expense too. I'm considering moving to Beijing for work and your videos have been so helpful in giving me ideas how daily expenses might look like there. Xie xie, Evelyn! ❤ And good luck with your RUclips channel! I can see the effort you put in and believe that it will keep growing. 😊 Loves from Thailand! (and a new subscriber 😄)
I've actually been wondering about your Chinese personality but having heard it now I think you are still the same person 😄 Really liked the Chinese vlog, you should do more in the future!🤗
Discovered you through this video and subscribed, because I like your vibe so far and I like YTers who are older than me that I can learn from. You kind of look like Kim Saeron in some angles, 姐!
Sometimes when I watch your videos it feels like looking at the alternate reality/similar life to mine! My partner is also very involved in the indie music scene (though in NYC, and we do have a band in which I sing in Finnish! :D) and we're also an international couple (though his Finnish skills are beginner at best lol). You give me hope in the whole youtuber/follow your dreams aspect, corporate America is doing more harm than good to me 🥲
Great video :) Hope you do more in Chinese, your way of speaking helps me as a more advanced beginner who needs more listening practice. Why did the post office not want to send the floppy disks?
I picked a 4AD artist to listen to because of this comment! Listening to Lucinda Chua now - if you like Mitski you'd like her too...thanks for sharing inspirations✨
I think your personality changes quite a lot, when you switch between the languages. To me it was like watching your twin sister. Hope this doesn’t offend you 😅 Wishing you all the best in exploring this world and sharing your stories with us.
thank you for yet another fun video!! 加油! also, would love to hear your thoughts on Babel and any other books you read in the future. would you consider doing a book video? Sending love ❤
跨过中文和英文的差距is kinda the story of Babel! I wrote a review on goodreads (also called tapiocapress there). Thinking of making a book vlog this month! Take care Luna:)
Thanks for taking us along 🤩 I love your China content (maybe you could show us your and Dave's fave jian bing places?) but I am also looking forward to following your adventures in Berlin. Pre-welcoming greetings from Germany! 😉
Do you (or anyone else in the comments) have any recommendations for similar Chinese speaking channels? This was so fun and I'd love to see more from you and in general ٩(^◡^)۶
Miki Rai has done a few vlogs speaking Chinese. I love watching Leah's fieldnotes - she has a few Chinese videos. dear nessie did some Chinese vlogs as well. Interested to hear other recommendations!
I’m South African and my partner is Chinese American… I would love to visit but he doesn’t want because he says they are wiping out the Cantonese language …. How true is that now?
sadly there are fewer and fewer younger people in Canton who can speak Cantonese, because it's no longer taught or used in schools. however when I go into shops I'm still greeted in Cantonese first - I hope it stays that way!
I feel like you have basically the same personality in Chinese and English honestly (maybe a bit more confident in Chinese? or is it just because you're with Dave lol)
It's nice to see that despite the Communist Party people can manage to have an almost normal life. But I think it's kind of scary for Dave living under such repressive environment.
What do you mean “almost normal life”? People are living normal lives. This vlog is literally showing them doing the same thing people in China and other countries do all the time, like go out to restaurants and shops and just enjoying themselves. And she has other vlogs where she is working and traveling. Does Dave look scared to you in them? Most average people on China don’t go about their lives in fear.
You guys are so cute together and mutually supportive 😍 also Guangzhou looks so beautiful I need to try some pineapple buns for sure ❤ love how you are a little awkward n cute when you speak Mandarin:) my personality changes as well when I switch from English to Japanese for example 👀 meanwhile I’m also conscious about English’s dominant role due to colonialism but it’s a blessing to be a polyglot and it changes our way of experiencing the world I think😊 anyway have a lovely day you two:)
the more I watch this vlog, the more I realize he was trying so hard to be supportive when being on camera actually makes him super uncomfortable...very very grateful. Thanks Dave!
Echoing everyone else in the comments - I really loved this vlog!! So wonderful to hear both of you speaking Mandarin, and to see more of Guangzhou. Do you two speak both Mandarin and English with one another at home?
love the bits when you speek to the camera, and explain further your though and experiences....you and Dave have a really coo and cute vibe! :) It's really true what Dave said, people outside China should know more about the cool things there are ... hope to keep discovering it in your videos :)
I also feel like i am another person or have a different character when i speak different languages! Btw, how did you like Babel? Would you recommend the book?
Hi! I love your vlogs. I am from Brasil and english is my second language, it was a little bit hard to listen in mandarin and read english sub, but I am enjoying to push my understanding futher. So, I can relate about reading in another language is hard cause it isnt so smothie as in your native. Great content!
Really nice idea to bring another very important part of you to the picture! Also I would love to know more about Dave’s company. I’m in the music industry too. 😊👻
I feel very vulnerable about sharing the Chinese part of me, or my relationship, but so overwhelmed by the love here...thank you guys so much! check out nugget @nuggetrecordschina on IG
as a fellow mandarin learner I really appreciate this crossover even more (please give me some hanzi subtitles next time so I can study a few sentences from this xd) This not being allowed to send floppy disks by post thing is just the most China that could have happened in this video. Dont get Dave arrested for espionage please
@@tapiocapress That's impressive. I don't know how I could possibly learn a language that way, but at nearly 70. Perhaps my neurons are not firing as quickly as they should. Good on you !
Wow, its so cool how good Dave’s Chinese is! How did he learn it? i hope you’ll upload another vlog in Chinese soon, you‘ve gained another subscriber :)

Aah this is so cute😩🤭 thank you for essentially letting us in on your date
thank you for coming along with us:)

You should do more videos in Chinese, I really liked watching you film in a little more relaxed/ comfortable state
I've actually been wondering about your Chinese personality but having heard it now I think you are still the same person 😄
Really liked the Chinese vlog, you should do more in the future!🤗
Haha I agree! Still the same person, but different sides of my personality! This was so fun to make haha would love to make more Chinese vlogs🤗

姐姐说中文好温柔 !! ur videos have been poppin off in quality recently 继续加油哦 :))
谢谢
AWW this is so cute evelyn!!
我自己觉得说中文和英文不太一样,不过也说不出来到底哪里不一样...check out pinned comment, I think it makes a lot of sense! thanks so much for watching🥰
Great video :) Hope you do more in Chinese, your way of speaking helps me as a more advanced beginner who needs more listening practice. Why did the post office not want to send the floppy disks?
My guess is they wouldn’t send the disks due to concerns of espionage!
I agree with one of the other comments - it's the most China thing ever🥲
I appreciate the 4AD t-shirt reminding me to listen to some of my favourite music today ❤️🩹
I picked a 4AD artist to listen to because of this comment! Listening to Lucinda Chua now - if you like Mitski you'd like her too...thanks for sharing inspirations✨
Loved it!, more videos like this please, awesome job and "Hi Dave"
I think your personality changes quite a lot, when you switch between the languages. To me it was like watching your twin sister. Hope this doesn’t offend you 😅 Wishing you all the best in exploring this world and sharing your stories with us.
hahaha if it's twin sisters like Laufey and Junia I would not mind at all!! thanks so much for watching!
@tapiocapress oh wow, what a great comparison! 💯💥
Didn't think of them but totally agree!
thank you for yet another fun video!!
also, would love to hear your thoughts on Babel and any other books you read in the future. would you consider doing a book video?
Sending love ❤
跨过中文和英文的差距is kinda the story of Babel! I wrote a review on goodreads (also called tapiocapress there). Thinking of making a book vlog this month! Take care Luna:)
hi, can u plz do an episode about what is making you consider moving to Berlin? thank you!
I support
That was great to watch, thanks for the fun video 🎉
Thanks for taking us along 🤩 I love your China content (maybe you could show us your and Dave's fave jian bing places?) but I am also looking forward to following your adventures in Berlin. Pre-welcoming greetings from Germany! 😉
Thank youuuu
Do you (or anyone else in the comments) have any recommendations for similar Chinese speaking channels? This was so fun and I'd love to see more from you and in general ٩(^◡^)۶
Miki Rai has done a few vlogs speaking Chinese. I love watching Leah's fieldnotes - she has a few Chinese videos. dear nessie did some Chinese vlogs as well. Interested to hear other recommendations!
Coco xu as well!
Such a cute vlog! Greetings from London 😊
You have the same bubbly personality in english and chinese! But maybe you're more expressive (?) in chinese ^^
Love this ❤❤ !!
Love it! I would like so much to learn chinese!
You are both so cute! Thank you David for the effort! You're glowing btb

Evelyn! 这是太棒了!我爱它!
谢谢greg
太可爱了❤
I feel like you have basically the same personality in Chinese and English honestly (maybe a bit more confident in Chinese? or is it just because you're with Dave lol)
Haha I feel like speaking English vs Chinese show slightly different sides of me, but still the same person!
Cool vlog.
cute
I hope I will get my Chinese girlfriend one day too. But they don't give me a visa to go China =_=
没想到你讲中文很慢也,我以为语速也会跟英文一样快😂
可能有点紧张哈哈
FLOPPY DISKS
And they said vinyl was hipster..
Ah ofc hes white
Thank you so much
Omg Dave was like, " nothing, let's go...". Dave's social battery is OUT!!!😅
the more I watch this vlog, the more I realize he was trying so hard to be supportive when being on camera actually makes him super uncomfortable...very very grateful. Thanks Dave!
Lovely vlog and yes !!!! I am happily surprised by finding out all the fun things happening in China ❤❤❤❤
So was I! And I'm still discovering new things every day✨
Do you get in trouble for uploading videos to RUclips through VPN within Mainland China?
strange for me to watch it in Mandarin but calming ☕
david seems like such a wholesome person
he's the best
Are you really not thinking about making content on bilibili again when you move to Berlin?
Echoing everyone else in the comments - I really loved this vlog!! So wonderful to hear both of you speaking Mandarin, and to see more of Guangzhou. Do you two speak both Mandarin and English with one another at home?
Thank you so much
你用中文的时候看起来挺闻容。用英文的比较chill😅
你那么美丽❤
So cute omg excited to watch!!
love the bits when you speek to the camera, and explain further your though and experiences....you and Dave have a really coo and cute vibe! :) It's really true what Dave said, people outside China should know more about the cool things there are ... hope to keep discovering it in your videos :)
These lesser known things in China changed my life for the better. Can't wait to share more of them with you!
David looks like a child when he shows everyone his 1999 tape player hahaha
he was so happy! he's got a whole suite of super vibesy vintage gadgets...maybe we'll see an episode of "dave's show and tell" one day haha
woah make more vlogs in Chinese plsss and omg从来没想到 大卫的普通话真非常流利!! 你们俩是个很棒的couple咯~
谢谢la
I also feel like i am another person or have a different character when i speak different languages! Btw, how did you like Babel? Would you recommend the book?
Hi! I love your vlogs. I am from Brasil and english is my second language, it was a little bit hard to listen in mandarin and read english sub, but I am enjoying to push my understanding futher. So, I can relate about reading in another language is hard cause it isnt so smothie as in your native.
Great content!
So happy for the Mandarin content as Im learning it and it makes such enjoyable comprehension practice. Would love to see more of these!
Really nice idea to bring another very important part of you to the picture! Also I would love to know more about Dave’s company. I’m in the music industry too. 😊👻
I feel very vulnerable about sharing the Chinese part of me, or my relationship, but so overwhelmed by the love here...thank you guys so much! check out nugget @nuggetrecordschina on IG
this was adorable
okay but why did i not know starbucks sells 菠萝包 😳😳 i miss it so much!!
Maybe they only serve it in China? Or perhaps they introduced them recently? So good tho...highly recommend!
as a fellow mandarin learner I really appreciate this crossover even more (please give me some hanzi subtitles next time so I can study a few sentences from this xd)
This not being allowed to send floppy disks by post thing is just the most China that could have happened in this video. Dont get Dave arrested for espionage please
trying my best to keep Dave out of troubles!😆
确实更喜欢中文vlog哈哈哈!
Hey Evelyn, do you have a good reads?? I love your book recommendations ❤
here you go: www.goodreads.com/user/show/119664929-tapiocapress Happy reading!
Hope this is not offensive... How did you learn English and how did Dave learn Chinese?
np! Long story short I learned the most from watching TV shows, and Dave from talking to customers at his shop
@@tapiocapress That's impressive. I don't know how I could possibly learn a language that way, but at nearly 70. Perhaps my neurons are not firing as quickly as they should. Good on you !
你们是太可爱, 我很喜欢这个中文的vlog
嘿嘿嘿谢谢~
evelyn 我好喜欢这种vlog! 可以练习我的听力哈哈哈
希望我说的还算标准哈哈 加油~
Wow, its so cool how good Dave’s Chinese is! How did he learn it? i hope you’ll upload another vlog in Chinese soon, you‘ve gained another subscriber :)
