Bas, thanks so much for investigating this stuff and explaining to so clearly here in 15 minutes so we don't have to. When I heard about this in the blog I was intrigued and even watched the whole monthly update waiting for them to explain it and....they never did! I love your work. Please keep the world-class content coming. Thank you, again.
This was a great summary! Definitely saved all our time messing around with it. You really need to wonder what Microsoft is thinking. Surely they could have used this effort and something else more useful.
Hi Bas, I'm quite new to Power BI. I really appreciate these looks into new features. Especially when you give your own opinion and give us food for thought. Keep 'm coming!
Please Microsoft, just make a proper filter pane instead. I saw some concept pictures from the PBI Core team a couple of months ago but back then it was not prioritized.
Yes, google data studio (formerly called looker) has amazing looking filter pane. Having something like this in pbi would eliminate the need for messing around with all those slicer objects.
Great stuff Bas ! I'm really happy I followed your design training earlier. You have a big fan over here across your southern border. I do have an issue here : I used these new BI List Slicer - for a FiscalYear & FiscalPeriod dashboard, based on your previous Financial Reporting video - and it shows fine in Poser BI Desktop, but after publishing : it doesn't show at all in the Power BI app on iOS or in a Brave Browser. There is a big empty space, no error, no slicer to be seen.
Have to agree with your commentary. For me the slicers (and card visuals) are the least developed parts in Power BI and I usually find it very difficult to get them to look or operate how I really want them to. Its always an unhappy compromise.
Nice overview. I hope they release this as a separate feature, as they may not have had enough time to test its integration with the existing slicer (whether old or new). Releasing it separately could help avoid sudden crashes or functionality issues, giving them time to ensure it works as intended.
A native "date between" slicer with an option to always open a report with the most recent date, like today, or just a button to do so, without us having to do any workaround would be much more useful!
Thanks Bas as always for teaching us how to use the new Power BI features. This time the new list slicer is not as impressive. On the other hand, I'd like to know the settings you use to format the graphs, in this case the line chart (border, shadow, padding, etc) and the background color, well the 2 backgrounds, the first one for the slicers and the second for the line chart. Thank you.
lol... You would think someone at MS would have asked "Why" a few times before this was implemented 😁 - Are you volunteering to be on their change board? Thanks for sharing Bas 💥💥💥💥
Thanks Bas, It's not a hot take, its pointing out the obvious. Half finished stuff rushed to production without anyone ever asking why? like you did in the video. There is no coherency to what's happening with visuals. It's almost like 2 competing teams were given the same objective. I would never touch this because A) why? its not finished and B) Sooner or later it will be rolled into the new "unified slicer experience" that will inevitably come at some point meaning you have to go back and update every Report it was used on. 9 years of development and here we are, the visuals and artistic control are still weakest part of Microsoft's "visualization product". Thanks for your work Bas, a true MVP.
Thank you, you made me laugh. Please keep being sceptical. To be honest I have been a little frustrated for some years now about many new features that I dont need or don't seem thought through. As with many MS products and features, I get the idea that there are technical people behind the steering wheel, that don't use their own programs or don't have any feeling for design and UX.
Hi Bas! It's also impossible to disable the selection of an item of a top hierarchy, am I correct? For example, disabling 'Europe' in your video so that users cannot click on it
You could filter Europe out by going to "Filters on this visual", add Region, and say Region is not Europe. Then you wouldn't see Europe. This is not exactly what you are saying though...did you want to see Europe but just not be able to click on it? That seems like it would frustrate the users.
@@DanNewton Hi Dan! thanks for your reply. I would like to still be able to collapse the Europe button, while not being able to click it to select all of the countries in it. This behavior might be expected when you are using a field parameter and do not want all the options to be selected. Just to be clear, I'm using the single select configuration.
your 100% right. Microsoft needs to focus more on tidying up all the stuff they already have versus adding useless features .00005% of the user base might actually implement. So silly.
I like the new slicer with hierarchies, but I agree that it could have been integrated within one of the other slicers. I will stick with my slicer, including a dropdown with multiple selections possible. Thanks Paul
Thanks for the deep dive, Bas! I agree that this one should have been an option for the new 'button' slicer instead of a whole visual. I still find it comforting to know that the team is still continuing to work on visuals (not only on Fabric stuff).
Hey Bas. Many thanks for all your amazing videos. On the trip to Tesla now for my interview. Looks like they value something in my powerBI report that I leaned from you!
I think it would be useful if the list slicer could keep two different fields on the same level of a hierarchy. This way you wouldn't have to create multiple slicers for different fields, but have it all under one slicer.
Bas, as another viewer commented, I laughed while watching this also. Nothing is better than watching you say things like, “well, maybe they’ll fix that later” as you kinda shrug a little. This should be a new drinking game. Every time you point out something that is either obviously lacking or doesn’t make sense, the viewers should take a drink. I cannot believe how many bugs and inefficiencies are present in a professional product. I have a lot of complaints with the program. While some of them are of course due to a lack of knowledge on my part, seeing you question the logic/(dis)functionalities validates many of the overall issues that I run into. Your videos are great! Keep commenting on how MS can actually make the product better.
I agree quite useless but Thanks for showing a good way to integrate with our visuals. Can you share some ways we can effectively use page navigator. Create categories & sub-categories for navigating different pages we have in the reports.
Thanks for sharing this. I feel the arrow (to the left of the names) are also counter-intuitive. It is pointing downwards when not expanded and rightwards when expanded. It is normally the other way round, no? Agree with your analysis that from the utility point of view, it doesn't add much value.
I agree they should make one slicer with all the options seems really odd what they have done. For Slicers what I really need is a default slicer option / value based on a Measure so the default value is dynamic is something I have been after for a while. I have noticed default visual improvements we were promised sometime back have still not materialized. Still holding out hope.
Sigh was so hoping there would be a native slicer that would properly deal with ragged hierarchies and removing blanks... alas the hierarchy slicer is still the only free visual out there that does this.... although it can't be a drop down which i desperately want in my visuals
EDIT: Finished the video and I see that's where the video ended up lol. For me this is basically the regular dropdown slicer but made more customizable and presentable. I'll be using this new list slicer when I have the space and need something to look good and default to the regular dropdown slicer (using a hierarchy) when space is more limited, but I want the same functionality.
Really wish they would pick an enhancement request, any enhancement request instead of rolling out something that's basically the same as something we already have.
Hi Bass, the List Slicer feature works great! I've already implemented it, but when I publish it to the workspace, the slicer shows an error. How can I fix this?
The date slicer is still terrible! 1. No option for single select. 2. With the between option, you can't pick a start date that is after the end date (let it just set the end date at the same chosen start date). 3. No option to set a dynamic default date. For example: max(order_date) - 1, min(delivery_date), ... 4. Slider (not slicer) that's not for single dates. For example: slide through Year-Months, showing as '2024-Jan, 2024-Feb, ...' Dates are such an important thing to slice and filter. I do not understand how these features are not top priority.
List Slicer is a joke... The ragged hierarchy handling was done some time ago by single developer in Custom Visual Hierarchy Slicer. This should be no 1 feature on list.

Option to assign default selected value to slicer please. Have been wanting for ages.
I am pretty sure it will be there at some point in the next 5 years 😅

fully agreed. the right side filter bar is just all we need, but it is s badly designed

I have the same issue. In the Power BI app on Adroid they are showing up, but not in Web Services.
@@VladimirKem you found a solution?
It's bizarre no one else mentions this.
Have to agree with your commentary. For me the slicers (and card visuals) are the least developed parts in Power BI and I usually find it very difficult to get them to look or operate how I really want them to. Its always an unhappy compromise.
Cards are really versatile. I use them a lot for top-level visuals - but they’re limited. Definitely an enhancement opportunity
Nice overview. I hope they release this as a separate feature, as they may not have had enough time to test its integration with the existing slicer (whether old or new). Releasing it separately could help avoid sudden crashes or functionality issues, giving them time to ensure it works as intended.
That’s probably it. Very clunky experience for the user however.
I want bookmarks integrated in slicers!
Hahahahaha
Now you have bookmark navigators! 😱😱🤯🤯
I hereby nominate Bas to do all UAT on any new visuals the PBI team want to launch. 😁😁
Hope you do more weekly video, always on a look out for your great and amazing topics.
Hahah thanks scary so many emojis at once 🤣🤣
@@HowtoPowerBI sorry, 😐

So is there any list slicer that would not show blank values for City, if that's not specified?
Can we set up filters with OR condition between columns?
Hello, is it possible to create a toggle with this new slicer?

this whould be a decent feature if they simply allowed us to turn it into a dropdown, the way it is now its just... weird, to say the least
We need default slicer option whyyyyyyyy is this not a thing .
it is a big thing for everybody but the pbi dev team lol
This is what happens when an organization has too many engineers. They start reinventing the wheel
We don't need the List Slicer. Add additional feature to the last released Slicer New visual
And they never “fix” the no selection = empty visuals/no data.
yea, a lot of stuff to fix still when it comes to slicers
Bas coming out swinging

Why microsoft spend time on this and not paginated tables
