Sump Pump: Can We Fix It? - Okie School of Adventure

- When this sump pump quit working, Alex's dad was convinced the motor was burned up. But Alex's mom suggested we tear into it as a learning exercise to see how it works - and who knows? Maybe we can fix it?
This is a Drummond sump pump with a water level switch and freeze protection. Alex got to practice using some tools and explore the parts of sump pump. We may have saved some money by fixing it instead of replacing it...you'll have to watch to see.
Whenever something breaks, consider if it's an opportunity to take apart with your kiddos and see if you can figure out how it works and how it is put together. It's a great chance to learn.

I love that his parents encourage him to learn just for the fun of it.
Thanks! We've loved watching him grow into an eager learner. Thanks for checking out our channel.
😂 this is the best video.
I searched how a sump pump works or what’s inside a sump pump. All that would show up is opening a sump pit in a basement.
Thanks for checking it out. We've been amazed how many views it consistently gets and how it has been our best performing video so far.
What an awesome technician! I can now fix my pump
Thanks for checking it out. Hope you find some of our other videos interesting, too.
Brother, this has been the greatest video I’ve ever seen on the internet. You’re a great Dad!
Thanks for watching!
Liked it less than 1 min in it! Even if it doesn’t get fixed I think this is such an excellent exercise to share. This is great parenting!
Thanks! Hope you check out the rest of the channel and if you like, please subscribe.
Wow awesome video, and job Alex, and parents!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Tool cool Kid, keep fixing stuff, it will become your therapy as it does to me. Kudos !
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I love this. First video I found of the inside of a sump pump. The previous home owner must’ve pulled the power cord out of the sump pump.. so I had bare wires showing.. and my capacitor was blown..
glad it helped!
Awesome video Alex! Keep up the great work and keep studying hard!
Thanks for watching and the encouragement!
OMG cute!!!! Good job, buddy!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great video buddy! I have a sump pump at my house and this helped me out! Gig em 👍🏻
Glad you liked it. Some of the things we tear up don't have a happy ending, but we always learn something.
Great video. We need to encourage our kids' curiosity to take things apart, though I did hear my dad telling me [50+ years ago] not to use a screwdriver as a lever!
I have a Truper submersible pump similar in design. I suspect its float switch connection is bad so I am trying to disassemble it. Mine has Triwing screws where yours had torx. Triwing is like Philips head but with three points, where Philips has four. I had to find and buy some Triwing drivers, for the first time in my life!
Thanks for checking it out and the feedback. The next project that involves prying, I'll let him know there are better practices!
@@OkieSchoolofAdventure Mostly likely a screwdriver will just bend. If it snaps, you could do more damage!
Great job there dad! I can and have fixed and built many different things because of the teaching and of my dad.
Thanks for watching and the feedback!
It’s easy to diagnose burnout in small ac motors such as this. When connected to power a burned out motor will not spin and will emit a faint humming sound
Thanks for the tip!
Awesome big guy ! 🤘🏾🔥
Thanks for watching!
Wow perfect job.
Thanks for checking it out!
I do things like this with my girls I love it awesome job
Thanks for watching and commenting. I never regret spending time on projects like this.
Ty Young Man :))
thanks for watching!
Nver touch the capacitor before bleeding the charge stored in it by touching the prongs together with screw driver.
@@rachidsabri5787 thanks for the safety tip!
@@OkieSchoolofAdventure you're welcome. Be safe
Amy tips for cleaning all of the scale inside and out of the pump? Not sure if submersing it in a vinegar water sultion woukd be aafe
If I remember correctly, the impeller is made out of rubber. Whatever you use, make sure it’s a safe for that and rubber seals and then rinse well.
@@OkieSchoolofAdventure ok thanks looks like my impellers are cast iron, but yeah the seals might not like it
out of curiosity, do you have any idea why my very same pump does not turn off?
My guess would be build up on the water level sensor probes. I’d pull that cover off and clean them off with sandpaper.
@@OkieSchoolofAdventure thanks. I’ll try after tonight rain. In meantime do you think running dry will do any damage?
@@windronner1 could. Depends how long I suppose. The seals could get warped or the motor could go out from running more than it’s duty cycle
@@OkieSchoolofAdventure have any idea of the length of duty cycle? This beast works so well it empties the water tank really quickly
Sorry - I don’t. We don’t use that sump pump anymore. Good luck on getting yours working again!
Is that a feaces pump for a septic tank
No. We previously used it in a drainage basin in our yard in an area that collected lots of water.
Don't have a child explain on how to repair a sump pump. Where I live my basement got 14 to 16 inches of water and have two sump pumps working 24 hours a day. If you need to repair it, it should be explained by an adult. If you want your son to learn about repairing sump pumps do without a video where people are depending on reliable advise.
I'm not really sure how an adult telling you to check for blockage, make sure the impeller is spinning freely, then take it apart to see if you have obvious (and not so obvious - that capacitor looked warped to me!) problems would be any different than how this child explained it. He obviously didn't script the video, he just acted and read the script. (Great job, by the way!)
Most 'professional plumbing' sites say to check the electricity, make sure the electricity is working, then call them. This was much better.
Just because his pump didn't quit working the same way your pump quit working isn't the child's fault.
But, you do you.
I think this video is most helpful for the child and that's the point. Video was helpful for me though.
Thanks! Glad it helped you.
Wow the entitlement of some people. It's a free video on a free platform, no one owes you anything
