Watanabe is an incredible actor. I really wish there was more conversations like these in the film. I could listen to them learning about each other for hours.
Books are a great way to learn from those that aren't around anymore, but if you're around someone who knows a lot, it's better to learn from that person and have a good conversation.
This is one of the best scenes of this movie! Love how Bob, instinctively, was about to send Algren's head rolling and Katsumoto calmly raises his hand and Bob bows. No words needed.
that and "in the spring the snow will melt and the pastures will open. until that time you are here." i think it conveys the message much like life how will choose to spend that time.
Lol Ken has a very dry sense of humor. That really showed by that remark. Everyone loved working with him on the set of Letters From Iwo Jima, filmed on location, no less.
I love how he says, "This is a low rank?" Almost as if he's being funny lol. Which you sort of get that from them during some of their conversations. One of the many things I loved about this film.

There is something seductive about Ken watanabe he has this power that the moment he walks into the room you don't move a muscle until he leaves the room
Custer failed because he split his force into two groups, and the two CO's of the second group that Custer wanted to join him in battle withheld their forces, leaving Custer to hold his position until he was overrun. Still ultimately his fault he died. Just wanted to share that.
don't know how this was recommended, but Custer died by suicide. a few indian kids sent to carlisle told the story to the teachers & were promptly "suicided" themselves.
My dad said that he read somewhere that Custer had 2 gatlings at his disposal and yet he refused to bring them because he basically said, "we don't need those". This too partially caused his demise.

I always interpreted that this simple phrase was a friendly reminder that he is still a in captivity, regardles the relative freedom captain Algren is treated.
This movie does a great job of explaining to the west the nature of samurais. You start out confused like cruise about what is valued and by the end you get it. "That is, bushido."
If this was made today, they would drill the point that Custer was bad, instead here we see the samurai admire him and we get a conflict between these two characters. That is compelling story telling.
I don't know how he does it, but Watanabe always manages to make the scene. Cruise is at some of his all time best, don't get me wrong, but...the under tones and inflection and Japanese Humanity Watanabe radiates is unreal. It's less like he's an actor playing a role, and more like he's a role, playing an actor.
The Indians had 1,500-2,500, Custer had 700. He was severely outnumbered and severally outgunned. The Indians had Winchester repeating rifles and revolvers as well as bows and arrows. The Soldiers had single shot carbines.
Fun fact: I remember from the DVD special features that Ken Watanabe did not speak any English at this time. He learned all his English dialogue phonetically, without understanding it's meaning. Pretty impressive. They must have had a good dialogue coach on set. He puts emphasis on all the right words.
I used to play the game books, cards, miniatures , and even a role playing game called L5R, legend of the five rings, it was based on Asian and Japanese culture in a fantasy realm. I don’t know why this movie always reminds of it and love a movie on the Scorpion clan coup. Do yourself a favor and google it up if you’ve never heard of it, heck go buy the very first book published called Scorpion. Awesome just awesome.

@knightmare91 super frog it is actually pretty much the same, indigenous people being moved and killed for their land. the only difference being about 80ish years of time.
Both the odds and his rationale were insane. I don’t condone the unjust persecution of North American Natives or, in Canada, First Nation Aboriginals. But I wrote this I focused on the arts and all I saw was a death wish that somebody’s ego disguise itself as a glorious battle. There is no glory in mass murder. There is no victory when dealing means are resolving a conflict is by the sword or the gun.
