This piece as a whole is beautiful, enigmatic, engaging, and most certainly difficult... The piano score is no shy of nightmare too... but the musical complication remains in the second layer of beauty... the substance is not compromised over the style... D. Oistrakh performance is among my few favorites ... absolutely legend...
Oistrakh is an universal genius. He feels as comfortable in Beethoven and in these marvellous post-impressionist "myths", which he rendres with the perfect tone. It would be fair also to pay a tribute to Yampolsky since the piano part is not easy and is as important as the violin part to create the atmosphere.

Die intime und perfekt synchronisierte Mitwirkung zwischen den beiden Virtuosen ist echt unvergleichlich im 20. Jahrhundert und ganz unbegreiflich im 21. Jahrhundert. Einfach wunderschön!
This is one of those few dissonant pieces that I enjoy (another one is Prokofiev's 1st violin concerto). I find it so strange. I cannot decipher any of it but I enjoy it similarly to my enjoyment to Dvorak's Dumky trio, despite being completely different works. I don't know what to think of it, but I like it.
I believe this is the true way to enjoy music. It should bypass any of your intellectual and lingual stereotypes. If music could be described by words - there wouldn't be any reason for music to exist.
