This is the first OTV interview I've ever seen, and it will be the last. I can't believe this guy claimed to be a huge "Lost" fan and thought they were dead the whole time. And here I thought fans of "Lost" paid attention to every last detail!
Oh god, it's this interview. Perfect opportunity to discuss LOST, and it's handled by this reporter. -First of all, be educated on what you are discussing. -Second of all, let the individual you're interviewing have the opportunity to speak; don't interrupt them.
The end is a masterpiece and the show is the best thing ever....Damon you are a genius....best writer on the planet!!! Prometheus is also a masterpiece.... sooo good!
I just finished "the leftovers season 2 " Damon you are a genius. Don't listen the haters your work is PERFECT. The leftovers is a masterpiece . Far better than Game of Thrones and Walking Dead ( and i love GOT and TWD a lot believe me) DAMON THANK YOU FOR ALL THE BRILLIANT EPISODES FROM LOST AND THE LEFTOVERS...
TheCinemafan87 yeah I have to agree. Dude, can you tell one minute in that Damon already hates this bearded troll interviewer? "Ugh, I left the house for this uninformed creep" haha 😂
It seems to me that people think Josh is a terrible interviewer because he doesn't actually interview. He has a podcast type discussion and I find that much more entertaining and satisfying than the normal uptight interview situation. I also think you get more information out of the interviewee this way as they tend to stray from set questions.
Damon is a genius and lost is a beautiful, epic, emotional masterpiece. The interviewer needs help. He couldn’t have seen lost because the ending was clear.
Wow, Josh. You're someone who watched Lost all the way through. You said "it had an ending that was really clear." Oh, and you declared that the ending was really disappointing, but in doing so revealed that you completely misunderstood the ending and therefore the series as a whole. How closely were you watching it? Did you read even one article about it the next day, or talk to anyone about it before talking with DL?!
I finally have closure on this series he cleared up everything i needed to know. Only a few will fully understand the real meaning of the show. Even more brilliant than I assumed.
Great discussion. And goes a long way to explain what some might feel are the disappointments of Prometheus. I loved Prometheus. For its tricky parts and for its clues. Great!!!
It's Scott's mythology, and he approved it all. To say that it is wrong or bad is to question Scott himself, who is responsible for all of it. Ultimately, it's Scott who is responsible, not a writer who was hired to edit another's script.
In regards to the medium, he is. He is responsible for a number of successful projects that he has helped to produce, and has won multiple awards for his writing.
Damon Lindelof gives people to much credit to be smart enough to use their imagination to come to a conclusion & figure things out for themselves. This digital world that i love very much has taught us some bad habits, and instant gratification is the worst. The i want it now complex..If someone wanted to buy or rent a movie, even watch a music video they had to make an effort. If someone wanted to buy music they had to make an effort. If you wanted to figure something out you had to make an effort
I've come to the conclusion that those who say 'the finale was AWFUL' or 'the last season was shit and it ruined the whole thing', etc, are those who wanted or were expecting something particular to happen at the end. Whereas those who enjoyed the end (like me, who thought it was perfect) were the ones who just sat down and watched it without expectations. Also, people who didn't like it could just be people who don't like 'togetherness' or love or 'finding oneself'. Which was what was central.
I don't understand how he necessarily "ruined Prometheus". I think it's all how you perceive the mysteries and questions being brought up. I for one, love the way Lindelof creates the "ambiguity" at the end. He's got a point, it would be pointless if the film led straight into Alien. Some sequences had to take place in one way or another to make sure the ending happened the way it did. Question= room for a sequel
Jesus Christ, Prometheus was not *that* bad!! It wasn't as good as it could have/should have been, but it wasn't a *bad* film, it was a good one, just not an amazing one. The characters were a little silly, the plot seemed very safe and big concepts were never explored fully, but it was enjoyable. He shouldn't be barred from Hollywood, he should keep trying.
He didn't do anything. He was called in to edit another man's script, not write one from scratch, and use Scott's story. It's Ridley Scott's mythology, and as director of the project too, he is ultimately responsible for the entirety of the project.
I thought you were talking about Lost since Damon actually had input on the storyline there. You can't blame Damon for Prometheus, it's Ridley Scott's movie.
If you think Prometheus is a cheesy space action film which is similar to the AVP movies then you really have no clue. The film may not be perfect, it isn't supposed to be a copy of Alien but it is a thoughtful, beautiful looking sc-fi film which is rare to find these days.
I've always been a fan of completely different stories adhering to the same universe of content, because when they happen to intersect you go "woah, that's pretty neat" and it doesn't detract from either story. if only every hollywood player would focus more on the lore and building unique and attractive stories inside the same universe instead of going "let's kick the dead horse some more just to make sure we've gotten all the pennies"
I love how all of these people who don't even study film hear a bunch of critics hate on the script for plot holes, and then act like they formed the opinion themselves.
And i totally respect that! ;) As i said, we'll maybe see that in the prequels (or in the commentary.. which i'll have to watch in the next time i think..) It's not that i dismiss the movie, since i love scifi, but i was a little disapointed and somehow saw the jj abrams / lindelof pattern.. (i don't even know how many things he changed in the script) which was the same in the new star trek.. i still .. arghhh :/
Hmm..as someone who also watched the series, owned the dvd's and listened to all the podcasts, the only thing I can remember him lying about is the Libby storyline conclusion. I don't hate him or the show for it. Still one of the best shows of all time. U mad bro?
Oh i'm aware of that, in literature you can work with metaphors and allegorys-they make you think, but it should be consistent and logic. I talk mostly about the Alien-Stuff (not even the god/engineer/human/where are we from questions.. they're treated quite clumsy here IMO). What is it with the zombie-guy, and the goo, and the worms, and the facehuggers from the goo, and the bigger facehugger born by noomi after getting infected by Charlie? Either it's quite complex,or just stitched together.:P
i can not imaging how uninformed Josh was for this interview. both clearly didn't understand Lost and that SoIaF is a series working toward defined ending and no just going on and on, i think there was a third thing but i cant remember what that was
*shakes head' I loved "Prometheus" and I admire Lindelof as a writer and charming person! Why is it that almost anything I love or admire is being pissed on by some faceless internet-morons!? ;-) Holy crap, I don't wanna be part of this "bashing-everything - generation"! ;-)
it was ruined for me because i didnt care if it was a prequel or not, i just wanted a good solid story with awesome special effects and got LOST in space
No its because you went in expecting Alien. It is not supposed to be a direct prequel to Alien, even if the PR lead you to believe it. ( It shouldn't of, Ridley Scott even said it only has strands of Alien DNA, and that's the last 30 seconds of the movie.) This is meant to be the 1st in a trilogy, all leading to the Alien. Stop whining about it has ruined your movie life. Pick up paper, a pen, or even your computer, and write an Alien Prequel you want to see. Guarantee Prometheus is better.
He re-scripted another's work, and it was all of it approved by Ridley Scott. Blame the director. And that 'character development' statement is odd, considering which specific scripts were produced by Lindelof and were recipients of multiple awards and nominations. He's no amateur.
"got LOST in space" You mean like that hugely successful television series that was the recipient of multiple emmy awards and nominations, and an international audience of more than thirty million? Hmm. Prometheus: directed by Ridley Scott, mythology by Ridley Scott, story by Ridley Scott, originally scripted by Jon Spaihts, edited-script by Damon Lindelof, approved by Ridley Scott. So, who is really at fault? Lindelof, who came in to rescript another's work, or Ridley Scott?
ruined is harsh, we bought into the hype. I enjoyed the movie but it had a lot of problems. For me is created questions and after movie discussions which I enjoy. The problem I had with the movie were the deaths, I would have enjoyed the spectacle of final action sequences if it weren't for the silly deaths.

I've just seen Prometheus (and i was disappointed by lost..) and yes, he creates a sense of wonder.. with absolutely no payoff or logic. Maybe some things will be explained in the sequels, but the lost experience tells me that this will be disappointing too. I dont need everything explained, good, new questions are nice.. but in prometheus it's often just mysteries for the sake of mystery it think. :( The rest of the movie was great though.. acting (esp. noomi and michael), design, pace..
You mean Riddley Scott should be barred from Hollywood... Did you watch the interview? Lindelof mentions very clearly that every single detail of the movie came out of Scott's mind and he only put it on paper.
Lindelof's mode of operandi is to place as many things as possible that do not makes any sense and let the fan boys keep it alive on the web by discussing , speculating and dissecting it ad infinitum.
Unfortunately just beautiful is far from enough. There's more to Aliens movies than just looking good. And yes, I was perfectly aware Prometheus is not to be assumed as a prequel and it really isn't. But guess what: it 100% will have a sequel. It's just business, isn't it...
The reason it created so many questions is that it was basically a vehicle for the subsequent sequel.......Prometheus, in all it's visual glory deserved a better, scriptwriter......not this small screen charlatan
Great interview! Love LOST, but the problem with Prometheus seriously isn't that it asks big questions or anything. It rather insults the intelligence of truly rational and thoughtful folks. I mean "that's what I choose to believe". Seriously? Choosing to believe something? Especially as a scientist? There's just no other word than ridiculous for it, as much as I hate to hate Damon.
"It's about characters who want something...and there are other characters who want to stop them." And this, kids, was his ENTIRE concept behind Prometheus. Cuz he read it in a book somewhere.
'If "Prometheus" makes no money and everybody hates it and I'm vilified as the guy who basically ruined it, it's still worth it ...' - Damon Lindelof. Man, this guy, what a smug thing to say. Can only be said from a guy who really thinks he can do no wrong. What a bollocks writer. Delusions of grandeur.
Also the interviewer is a very closed minded individual, that obviously didn't understand anything he was watching on lost, lol watch it again geez. (I couldn't believe he said nothing really happen) really? Wtf? smoke more pot dude lol.
i just wanted a good scifi movie with a solid story but got a convoluted mess with characters that had a profound lack of common sense. this was a missed opportunity
Also you seem to get riled up pretty easy. Nothing in my comment to you was harmful, only the Prometheus is better than what you could write. Feel sorry for your parents.
First, Prom is a terrible screenplay. Just terrible. Second, I think Damon did a great job with LOST, even with the lackluster 6th. I am still interested to see what he can do, just keep him the fuck away from ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER.
Finding a fresh steaming pile of human shit on my doorstep makes me think and ask questions, too, though. Who dropped this dump on my porch? For one....and why? What have I done to this person to warrant fecal retaliation? Was it random, or was it a disgruntled neighbor that I've somehow offended? Did they mean this stink pile for someone else, and get the address mixed up?
I'm sorry Mr. Lindelof, but you obviously really screwed Scott's brilliant ideas. "Prometheus" is a disappointment and I'm not saying it as the Alien nerd that I am. Yesterday I just wasted my money on a cheesy space action, closer to the AVP movies than to Ridley's classic. Very very sad...

What about The Leftovers? Season 2 was brilliant .... 6 years waiting to enjoy something like that, after LOST.
I just finished "the leftovers season 2 "

Wait, he wrote Prometheus? Yeah, I love that movie... still waiting for a sequel, better yet sequels
Philip Simmonds there was a sequel. Alien Covenant. Wasn’t the best tho so maybe your comment was meant to be ironic...
That interviewer really pulls off being simultaneously stupid and undeservedly smug. I respect Lindelof so much for being so cool with him.
The best show EVER! we should be thanking him for his part in Lost.
It seems to me that people think Josh is a terrible interviewer because he doesn't actually interview. That was brilliant, really interesting and well done interview.
I watch this interview once a year. No lie. Damon is amazing 💙
Then I feel bad that you've never seen LOST, The most innovative, imaginative TV series ever created.
The first couple of minutes of this are hilarious 😂
Damon Lindelof is a genius
Great discussion. And goes a long way to explain what some might feel are the disappointments of Prometheus. I loved Prometheus. For its tricky parts and for its clues. Great!!!

he just can't wrap his mind around the LOST finale....really? People still don't understand??
I agree, I would have loved to have seen what Ridley could do with Nolan as writer but that's just me :)
it was very interesting how he destroyed the mythos of the Matrix
Man, you need more hugs...
Damon 'It's open to interpretation' Lindelof

great job josh, now go get joss whedon!

i just wanted a good scifi movie with a solid story but got a convoluted mess with characters that had a profound lack of common sense. this was a missed opportunity
then you haven't seen many
You know they are beaten when a sarcastic attempt at humour fails miserably.
Also you seem to get riled up pretty easy. Nothing in my comment to you was harmful, only the Prometheus is better than what you could write. Feel sorry for your parents.
A true scientist will explore ALL avenues, After-all magic is only science yet to be understood.
HEY DAMON STOP WRITING SCI FI SCRIPTS, YOU CANT DO IT.
really? what is the big deal that a fictional character who is a scientist believes in religion?
"is it good?"
ughhh
First, Prom is a terrible screenplay. Just terrible. Second, I think Damon did a great job with LOST, even with the lackluster 6th. I am still interested to see what he can do, just keep him the fuck away from ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER.
First Lost, then Prometheus, and soon Star Trek 2... are there no other (better) sci-fi writters alive in Hollywood?
You do realize there is going to be a sequel....Dont you???
Finding a fresh steaming pile of human shit on my doorstep makes me think and ask questions, too, though.
Who dropped this dump on my porch? For one....and why? What have I done to this person to warrant fecal retaliation? Was it random, or was it a disgruntled neighbor that I've somehow offended?
Did they mean this stink pile for someone else, and get the address mixed up?
I didn't really have any particular expectations with the finale and I hated it. So there goes that theory.
You think scientists don't believe in some form of religion??? Lol..
Yes how shit it was
Prometheus was a mess loaded with completely nonsensical character motivations and both Lindelof and Scott deserve the blame.
Why don't you see if you can do better? Oh you don't write.
LINDELOF GENIUS?.....HE RUINED PROMETHEUS
He may be a genius but I know this, his genius does not translate to the tv or movie screens...
Lost cheated its audience. Period. They built up a world that they themselves could not explain and they chickened out. You can take bold brave leaps in your story telling but if you cant tie up all the loose ends together then u have failed as a story teller. You can brazen it out in the interviews like this one but u LOST dude.
They never had a satisfactory answer to all the mysteries because there never was a satisfactory answer but that never bothered me. LOST was really a show about the characters and how they related to eachother.
Everything was explained but you like many others just didn't pay enough attention to detail
These two individuals have contributed absolutely nothing to society. And they are so smug about it. Why?
The only thing 'Alien' to this hack Lindelof is character development.
Worst writer ever.
