      Thank you very much for your videos but I must be missing something and I'm sorry I'm really terrible with technology.
      I have an issue with only having an Xbox X at the minute to watch dvds on but the guy from eBay told me that it will only play the movie itself on Xbox but the second disc the bonus content will not, because it is locked? I would greatly appreciate any advice. Edit. I forgot to say that the version I'm trying to buy is dark skies because of the steel book and poster.
      I would like to eventually buy the second sight edition especially if I can watch everything on my Xbox, since it seems I can't watch the bonus content of the dark skies edition on Xbox X.

    I personally prefer the Second Sight release as while it is brighter I feel it looks just a tad more natural especially with the grain. The Grindhouse aesthetic is fun but I do think it's a little too dark at times on the Dark Sky release. Either way though it really is such a close call. I had both but ended up parting with my Dark Sky and stuck with my standard Second Sight. Definitely ripped that Tobe Hooper and William Friedkin interview from the U.S. release as that's an exclusive treat. Either way these releases rule!

    What 4k ultra players do you recommend watching these films on to see the best picture presented? I have an LG C1 OLED but want to get a good player. Also I assume since this is a UK revamp then I need one that reads region free. Thanks

    I’m fine with the Dark Sky version. Not having a region free player is part of the reason I didn’t get the Second Sight version because I wouldn’t be able to watch the normal Blu-Ray discs, as I’d like to be able to make sure all the discs work whenever I get a new film be it on DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K Blu-Ray. But I’m glad to hear your thoughts on the releases. The stuff the Second Sight has such as the book is something I would have liked to have seen an American release have, since this is an American film, but overall I’m fine with the steelbook. Cheers for a very helpful review. I have a question though. I have the 40th Anniversary Blu-ray of the film, and it states that it is a "new 4k transfer". So if I buy the new 4k release, how much better will it actually look on a 4k TV? My current TV is a 1080p one, which I watch via an Xbox one X.

  • @RyanWard1987
    @RyanWard1987 Год назад +3

    Great showdown, Jeff! Some things I noticed with the Dark Sky transfer was when there’s a cut to another angle/scene (only in some cases, not all), the first 1-3 frames are way clearer/crisper/sharper in quality for some reason, showing a ton of delicious grain, lol. And then after those first couple of frames or so, it’ll shift back to “normal,” or to what it looks like normally, which (in comparison to those first few frames) is much more smoothed out.
    In the Second Sight transfer, while this weird phenomenon is still there (which I assume is just part of the source material rather than having anything to do with either of the transfers themselves 😅), it’s more balanced out with the rest of the frames.
    And back to the Dark Sky transfer, whites can sometimes be blown out more often than on the Second Sight transfer, and in some cases they’ll even get a bit blocky/artifact-y (especially noticeable in the shoulder area of Alfredo Sawyer’s shirt when he’s talking with Franklin in the van), yet I noticed some of the natural splotches/imperfections in the film negative (which I *love* they kept in/didn’t clean out!) tend to come through much, much clearer, crisper, sharper, and more detailed in the Dark Sky transfer than they do in the Second Sight transfer.
    At the end of the day, I tend to agree that the Second Sight version wins out overall, especially due to the superior/way more active Atmos track (they are different in both releases! 😁👍). But that being said, it certainly is *very* close in my opinion, as the Dark Sky version *does* have the occasional moment of better clarity/sharpness/detail over the Second Sight transfer, but in turn, it has more blown-out whites… which leads to *less* detail than the Second Sight version in some places. Although the DS version sometimes wins out on detail/clarity (to a *very* minor degree), the Second Sight version is, in a way, seemingly more “refined” and “uniform.” I hesitate to say more “smoothed out” as I don’t believe there’s any DNR or smoothing going on (or if so, it isn’t much at all!) but whatever it is that Second Sight did to their version that Dark Sky didn’t do to theirs, it makes for a seemingly more “consistent” visual presentation overall, which I think most will appreciate more (as has seemed to be the general consensus so far). And just to add here at the end, it doesn’t always mean everything (as shown above & in this great showdown by Jeff), but for those who care, the total file size and bitrate are both higher on the Second Sight version than they are on the Dark Sky version, if that helps you to make a personal choice between them😁
    I do think if they didn’t cram all of the special features onto the one 4K disc on the Second Sight release, it might’ve saved more room on the disc for the video file, and perhaps that “leg room” could’ve given the video file more “room to breathe” and lead to less compression (of which, again, there is seemingly less of on the SS version vs the DS anyway, so make of that what you will!), but I digress. Plus, ya can’t argue with the convenience of not having to switch out discs to watch the extras!😂
    All in all, they’re both easily worthy of owning/both have their own individual pros and cons, just like Jeff said, so if you like the movie enough and can afford it… it’s a bit of a cop out for me to suggest, but honestly, I’d say get both👍

    • @GasmaskAvenger
      @GasmaskAvenger Год назад +1

      FYI Chainsaw 1 is about 83 minutes long and the file size for the film itself on a 90GB disc is 59.2GBs whereas Chainsaw 2, on the VinSyn 4K, is 60.6GBs on a 60.8GB disc.
      Plus keep in mind that blu-ray/4K encoding wizards Fidelity in Motion handled the disc authoring on the Second Sight 4K UHD of Chainsaw 1, so basically its top of the line quality even with the remaining 30GBs or so allocated to bonus features.

      I own the Second Sight disc, as well as the German SDR release that came out years ago. The latter features some really awful compression in areas, with some egregious macro blocking.
      I kind of want to triple dip and get the Dark Sky release to see how it compares to the Second Sight disc. Based on screenshots, I do prefer the color grading of the Dark Sky disc - however - good compression/encoding is of high importance to me.
      The DS version is currently on sale at the Best Buy local to me (maybe since they’re just trying to weed out what’s left of their physical media) - so I wanted to ask how bad is the macro blocking in the scene you mentioned of the DS disc? Is it forgivable enough to still purchase and enjoy watching without being taken out of the experience? Because the Second Sight encode is virtually flawless from an encoding standpoint.

    • @RyanWard1987
      @RyanWard1987 3 месяца назад

      @@TetraVaalBioSecurityHey friend! Sorry for my delayed response, I didn’t notice the notification until just now! I would have to agree with your sentiment and say that the Second Sight transfer is the best possible version at the end of the day, you’re 100% correct about that FiM encode (as Gasmask Avenger mentioned above, as well!) but yeah the Dark Sky one *does* feel different, to an interesting degree, and “dirtier” in a way-a good way, that is!!-almost like in a “true to the original” sort of manner👍
      As for that aforementioned macroblocking, I honestly only really noticed it when I had it paused and was stepping forward frame by frame. Honestly a *lot* of these minute differences were really only noticed when doing that+flipping back and forth between the two😅
      So honestly all that being said, I would definitely call any of the previously mentioned issues totally forgivable (especially if getting it on sale!) and I think you’d be very happy if just sticking with what you have, but you’d be just as happy-if not *much* happier😁- when giving yourself a treat by going ahead and taking advantage of those “Bye Bye Best Buy” sales and finishing off your trifecta by adding the Dark Sky version to your collection. Some people prefer it to the Second Sight, and you may find yourself being one of them! More options=always a good thing!
      Anyway, I hope that helps, and if you decide to nab it, I hope you enjoy it!! Be sure to let me know what you think if you do! 😄👍
      Edit: side note though, now you have me curious to check out that SDR German version, just out of curiosity! Presumably the least of the three versions, judging from what you described above and all the other stuff I’ve heard + the lack of HDR and all of course, yet it has the interesting/unique wrinkle of being the only 4K version which Tobe himself approved, so there is still that! Curious what he would’ve thought of the other two versions/their respective HDR grades🤔

    I really appreciate your reviews brother, and I am on the same page that some movies shouldn't look "good" (the term "good" being subjective), This movie is a classic example where being 4k/UHD is a disservice, in my opinion. The movie was made to be the way it was presented. It's not "clean" and it shouldn't be.
    I still keep VHS copies of some of these older films, namely the popular slasher series' of the time (Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw, etc.) There is definitely something special about viewing them in a terribly aged format that is flawed. I have yet to watch the original Texas Chainsaw in any other format than VHS, and oddly enough, I'm okay with that. I have been expanding my Blu-Ray collection, but some things shouldn't be tampered with.
    This movie, along with it's sequels, is raw and gritty. Watching them on a format (VHS) that doesn't age particularly well kind of adds to the charm. I don't want perfect visuals, I want a real deal experience.

    I liken this interesting picture comparison to Halloweens Lionsgate and Scream Factory releases. I thought the SF release was superior. It is great to have options. Personally I think the extra restoration work done by SS on TCM makes their edition a clear winner here on picture quality alone. Originality is great but if quality matters why settle for less when you can have better? To me personally that’s why i upgrade to 4k for a better all round image presentation? And that’s what SS have done. If you then consider the packaging with the original UK art work on the box plus art cards and hard back essay well then its not much of a showdown at all. Second Sight is far superior to the Dark Sky edition. Having said that the DS release is still a good transfer it’s just not as great as Second Sight. They are leading the way right now with their releases imo.

      It is funny because from the reviews and from hearing about it (and screenshots) I totally thought I would like the LG version better… But when I watched it on my TV, the SF was superior.

    The Darksky version has the William Friedkin/ Tobe Hooper, interview. The Second Sight, does not. I agree with the Darksky transfer. It’s suppose to look grimy.

    Great to see a comparison of two 4K's, but I hope double 4K releases won't be too common, unless they are fixing a really bad one. To much stress about getting the "right" one and should I double dip when this other comes out etc., as well as two or more companies spending time on the same movie when they could be spending time on different movies. I this case however I won't be picking up either of them. I didn't really like Texas Chain Saw Massacre, nor did my dad and no-one else in my immediate family watches horror, so I'll stick with my blu-ray, in case I ever feel like giving it a second chance.

    While I love the bells and whistles of the Second Sight release (I'm a sucker for sexy packaging), I'm content with the Dark Sky release. But god, I need to go region free already...these Second Releases are gorgeous and I'm missing out on them. I think I'll finally bite the bullet and budget for a region free player next month.
    So I only have a little bit of FOMO for the Second Sight release only for the suped up packaging and book. But Dark Sky fits easily on a shelf, has a transfer that honors the visual language of the film, and has the supplements to satisfy.

    I've got the second sight version. While I love grain in picture, texas chainsaw has a bit too much, to the point it's intrusive to the picture, it detracts from the overall viewing which is a shame because the detail and colour is phenomenal.

    Woooow this is a miss BIG TIME. The Second Sight release is more filmic, higher indetail, and there are a lot of spots where the Dark Sky image is completely blown whereas the Second Sight is properly balanced, not blown, abd revealing detail that was previously only seen on the film print.
    THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME AUDIO TRACKS. INCORRECT. The Second Sight has a much cleaner and better balanced atmos track.
    Jeff either did this without fully watching both films or he's being kind to Dark Sky for....reasons.
    I recommend checking out the Twin Flicks side by side comparison for a true comparison.

    If you already have the Dark Sky or the Turbine release, I don't think you need to upgrade. But, if you have no version, the Second Sight is the one to get. I had the Turbine and got the Second Sight just because I love their releases. I know there is always trepidation about not wanting TCM to look too pretty or if it even needs a 4K but, I think the 4K just brings out the grime and grain even more. It looks and sounds awesome.

    Why are you using the term "grindhouse"? Obviously, TCM is grindhouse cinema, but original grindhouse isn't an artistic vision so much as a market condition. Creators who were constrained to operate outside of production cinema were forced to distribute to grindhouse theaters. As much as I understand that this lent itself to a particular aesthetic, the aesthetic itself wasn't the objective for these films as a category. In this way, your use of grindhouse feels like a very post-modern take on the genre. (Great work on the review, BTW.)

    • @JeffRauseo

      The film is that aesthetic though. And in this case I felt like it made sense because that’s how one version looked vs the other cleaner one.
