Here is my top 10: Awaken (2018) - Think of it more as a demo disc. Absolutely stunning visuals of shots taken across 35 countries over 5 years. If you have a good sub setup, it will also take full advantage. Blade Runner 2049 - Sound is the exact same Atmos as used on the Blu-ray. Video reviewers claim there is not much difference technically either. I may be display dependent on how much a difference is noticed. It is such a great movie you should just get on the best possible format. The Final Countdown (1980) is a great movie concept that is a fun watch and Blue Underground did a stellar job in it's restoration and upgrade of an Atmos mix. Jaws if you watch some of the special features and see how much work was put in to restore it, you will appreciate this release. Road House (1989) is a fun action movie and Vinegar Syndrome just did an amazing job of restoration. Apocalypse Now I agree is a great looking film and the sound work they did to bring to Atmos is nothing short of amazing. They Live (1988) is a classic John Carpenter film. Shout's release looks like it was shot yesterday and has a good Atmos upgrade. Shows just how sharp black and white in 4k can look with the contrast of the color shots. The Thing (1982) Another John Carpenter classic and it really showcase how practical effects can look so good. Universal did a great job on this. Coraline just looks incredible! The 4K work and Atmos upgrade make this a must buy the whole family can enjoy. Just an amazing feast for the eyes. And now the one that should be everyone's number one. I assume if it is not in the viewer's top 10 at least, they haven't watched this 4K disc, Suspiria (1977). Who cares about the "plot" with such an art piece of set design and camera work. Throw in the Atmos upgrade and the Goblin provided soundtrack and you have pure audio visual candy.

Lord of the Rings on 4k is a DNR and an edge enhancement fright fest. I just don't understand how these transfers received such glowing reviews. When I first put the discs in my 4k player, my initial reaction was: wtf is this?! They didn't use a true, 4 remaster of the original negative, it looks like a 2k upscale. Yes, it has good HDR and a very good audio track, but the overall image looks terrible, in many scenes. There are a few image comparisons between the standard blu-ray and the 4k and, oh boy, some scenes in the 4k transfer have entire chunks of detail missing. So, overall, it's passable, but only for the HDR and the Atmos track.
The Dark Knight Trilogy??? I love Batman Begins; however the video transfer wasn't good at all (I own all three movies). None are reference quality at all. I am guessing that you don't have a surround sound system.
Yes 2001 on 4k is incredible. While watching it I kept saying to myself I can't believe how good this looks. Even though I shouldn't because it's Kubrick but "WOW, this came out in 1968" was in my head the whole time. Knowing Kubrick I had to look up the filming dates cause I knew he shot for a long time. Yep he began filming in 1965. It's a Masterpiece.

@@MaxSoininen Hello! So technically speaking it’s 4K vs Blu-ray. Aka, UHD vs HD or 2160 p vs 1080 p. HDR is also a HUGE benefit of 4K UHD that makes it standout.
@@ChadSabourin I shall rephrase my question. Do the 4k UHD movies still come in discs that require a blu-ray player? Or is it another form of physical media entirely?

@@ChadSabourin absolutely!! id say movies shot in digital in SD or HD should not exist in 4k because the 4k is just an upscale and no real extra data can be added. though I guess it could be less compressed than the HD bluray version. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Blade Runner 2049 as an honorable mention? C'mon, Man! It's easily a Top 3 to Top 5 Disc. LOTR Trilogy? It has a very questionable video transfer (and I own it on Kaleidescape).
Love it! Thus why it’s an honorable mention. Have only seen Theatrical Cuts of Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray & 4K. Can’t attest to the extended cuts since I’ve only seen them once a piece on dvd 11+ years ago.
"4K UHDs" is a plural, not a possessive. No apostrophe. I'm surprised that you have the Dark Knight films on the list because they have weak contrast and the non-IMAX scenes look unusually soft. I was excited for Batman Begins because it's my favorite of the three and its blu-ray was so bad, but this still isn't what it should be.
Definitely misheard it! I said I had to rewatch it because my wife & I have it where we watch all of the best picture nominees together. Meaning that since she didn’t see it yet, I rewatched it with her.
Behind the scenes "bonus" stuff always ruins it for me. I never want to see how the sausage is made. If it's a movie history interview, sure that can be fascinating, but that's where it ends for me in the area of magicians spilling their tricks. BTW, movie trilogies or more should never be allowed on Top 10 or 20 lists. That's just way too many movies, and defeats the purpose. Meanwhile, all the single picks were perfect.
That’s fair enough! I definitely get that view point. I just think that it’s a shame when a DVD or Blu-ray has an abundance of bonus features & then the 4K only has like a commentary track.
I totally disagree. I love to see how they made things. I actually find it inspiring. They are so creative in how they solve problems to make certain effects, it's amazing and even sometimes mind blowing. I also usually am amazed on how much efforts can be put into a single moment in a movie that perhaps only last 15 seconds screen time. It always blows my mind in how much work it is to make a movie, how driven some movie makers are, to create their vision. There are so many things you usually never think about, but of which someone else has put down a whole lot of thought to. I find it inspiring. I'm mostly talking about older movies now.
@@ChadSabourin I'm not the only one. You're actually the only one that has stated that Blade Runner 2049 was reference. I'm not disagreeing with the fact that it's a great 4K disc but it is not reference.

There are a few image comparisons between the standard blu-ray and the 4k and, oh boy, some scenes in the 4k transfer have entire chunks of detail missing. So, overall, it's passable, but only for the HDR and the Atmos track.
😱
The Dark Knight Trilogy??? I love Batman Begins; however the video transfer wasn't good at all (I own all three movies). None are reference quality at all. I am guessing that you don't have a surround sound system.
I do! Always remember that a Top 10 list is subjective. Meaning your top 10 will be different from mine, which is okay!
Yup! Honestly, his films are sooooo great looking. I own Paths of Glory, Barry Lyndon & The Killing on Criterion Blu-ray & am very happy with them. Still waiting for Eyes Wide Shut to get a 4K…Heard the Blu-ray isn’t that good.
When people mention jaws I leave. 😭. Tired of hearing about that movie. Its mid.
@@PIPERBOYWILLIAMS Films/tv shows are an art form. Thus they are subjective. Meaning that it’s okay for people to have different opinions. If we all had the same opinion, life would be dull. Food for thought.
Lol.
When you say 4k vs blue-ray you are technically comparing 4k blue-ray vs HD blue-ray right? Not trying to pick on semantics, I am just new to this.
@@MaxSoininen It’s two different forms of Physical Media. A Blu-ray can play in a Blu-ray player & 4K Player whilst ONLY a 4K can play in a 4K player.
@@ChadSabourin thanks for answering! The 4k lord of the rings set piqued my interest. So getting a 4K player would be good for both blu-rays and 4k discs then.
Great list in terms of good movies by the way!
No Pacific Rim?
Nope! Only saw it once…In theaters, back in 2013😂 Enjoyable movie, but haven’t had an urge to revisit it. Love Del Toro, though!
@ChadSabourin Cool. Not my favorite movie, but the 4k versions AQ and PQ are unbelievable.
@@mr.w4904 That’s fair! I have heard that too.
I should get a 4k player
100% should! Shot on films in particularly REALLY benefit from 4K transfers.
@@HeavyMetalSonicRM what can I say, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
There is only THREE Indiana Jones movies.
@@RandomPickles 😂😂😂
Did I hear you correctly that you liked Nightmare Alley better once you found out it was nominated for an award? 🤔
Definitely misheard it! I said I had to rewatch it because my wife & I have it where we watch all of the best picture nominees together. Meaning that since she didn’t see it yet, I rewatched it with her.
@@ChadSabourin ok got it, my bad. 👍
Nightmare Alley 1947 original version is better than the 2021 remake.
I can see where you’re coming from, even if I don’t share that opinion.
Can't see the movie to much glare
???
Good to have the option no? For ppl who are genuinely interested.
I generally agree unless it’s LOTR :)
Blade Runner 2049 is not reference quality for video. Many have debunked the lie behind the HDR.
You’re entitled to that view on both accounts. We’ll just have to agree to disagree & move on.
@@ChadSabourin I'm not the only one. You're actually the only one that has stated that Blade Runner 2049 was reference. I'm not disagreeing with the fact that it's a great 4K disc but it is not reference.
@@randybradley4151 For me, it is. For you, it isn’t. That’s okay. If we all had the same top 10, life would be dull.
@@ChadSabourin It has nothing to do about a top 10. It has to do with you calling them reference. You do understand what reference means, correct?
@@randybradley4151 it’s reference for me. It’s not, for you. Let’s agree to disagree & move on like adults. Is that okay with you? Or shall we debate until the trumpets sound? 🤓
The Dark Knight trilogy is vastly, VASTLY over rated for video quality. Some scenes look good, especially the opening of Dark Knight rises but consistency is very spotty . . .
@@kellywilliamson2187 Agree to disagree!
Your picks are soooo predictable, especially your top 5.
@@cavalierdecoupe Okay? Your point? 😂😂😂
@@ChadSabourin my point being that if you check other physical media channels, those are always picked out of hundreds of other excellent releases.
@@cavalierdecoupe Well hey, you could always create your own channel & create a list that you deem to be unpredictable. Or you could have implemented your own Top 10 in your opening comment instead of coming off as pompous. 🤷♂️Top 10 lists are subjective. Everyone’s will be different. Sure, there might be some overlap. But no two lists are the same & to be honest, that’s the beauty of film as an art form: It’s subjective.
@@ChadSabourin indeed you are right. I apologize.
@@cavalierdecoupe Apology accepted! I do want to see your Top 10, though. Might be some that I either haven’t added to my collection yet & or seen yet.
