Frank said that his solos were an amount of time that he is given to decorate. Very few can tell a story with their musical instrument of choice. Frank was the master.

One of my favorite Frank jams. It’s hard and Frank was in the zone.

The intro drum roll is Terry Bozzio (Hands with a Hammer of YCDTOSA Vol 4) the rest of the drum is Vinnie Colaiuta. The solo is from an Illinois Enema Bandit performance, that you can find (whispers - 'bootlegged') on RUclips somewhere...

Great reaction. I've obsessed over this song and all the others since the 80s. Only Zappa can make a 10 minute guitar solo work.

Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar was a 3 lp set of guitar solos originally rereleased separately for the fans and then as a 3 lp box set for general release. There is also from a few years later a double lp titled "Guitar" that is also just the guitar solos.

And to think his best work on guitar was actually from the 76-77, up thru Baby snakes solos. Better than the solos on the Shut up series, except for ship ahoy, from the Bozzio era.Colaiuta was a bit sloppy on some of the cuts of Shut up series.

@@globextradingsystemsllc1740 I agree on the most part that the 70s was a better time for his guitar work but I'm ok with the 80s stuff.

@@SPKdesign1 OK. His Broadway the hard way 87-88 /tour was sensational, bringing in a grand Wazoo type big band, and his guitar solos were more shredding.

Love this one, I think I'd call this a "reggae funk boogie." Zappa was a master at replicating and infusing different genres. He would petition the audience to choose what genre he would play a song in and had his band able to play each one in different styles on the fly.

Almost every song Frank wrote was a showcase for his soloing capabilities... And rightly so. There's a reason why an overwhelming number of musicians in the 60s and 70s, INCLUDING the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, & Eric Clapton thought Zappa was a musical savant. The first artist ever to be banned from the Royal Albert Hall in London, following his performance in 1971. When you get special permission from Paul McCartney and John Lennon to mock one of the Beatle's most famous cover photos of all time, Sgt. Pepper's, You know you've arrived...

@Leddy Gee - The 1971 performance at the Albert Hall didn't happen. It was cancelled because of what the Albert Hall people considered profane words in the songs. Also, Frank never got permission to do the parody of the Beatles Sgt. Pepper album cover from McCartney or Lennon. That's why the original release of the album had the cover reversed. The inside of the gatefold album became the outside and the outside cover became the inside of Frank's We're only in it for the Money LP.
