But Frank was forced to compromise his organic soloing, because of Vinnie "sloppy Colai" off the charts chaotic phrasing. Frank needed to sustain his guitar timbre sound by using a few dimarzio pickups, because Colaiutas drumming added to much chaos in an already chaotic Zappa style. Bozzio, not a better jazz drummer, but miles ahead as a better fit for Frank's direction, from the still young raw Vinnie ,who was still using match grip!!
This WAS the guitar solo to The Illinois Ennema Bandit from the 1979 until1981 Fall tour of Zappa in America ... but..not anymore. After this album came out--- it became---Soup... 'N' old clothes.
All the drummers on this triple LP are just ludicrous good. Well, every member of the band is, but just sayin', as a former drummer, it just always blew me away. The entire album is made of live recordings.
At about 6.30 seconds of your video... there is a perfect example of a String Bending technique that I have only heard Zappa ever employ... it's a bending of the Bottom strings... the thicker strings in a way that is really very very uncommon. It will put a Les Paul WAYYYY OUT of tune. He would do it but rarely and ALWAYS towards the end of a sol,o... so that when the solo was finished... he would hand the guitar to his technician ...that would then tune it back up for the next solo in somewhere around 15 or 20 minutes. I saw Zappa do these kind of bends live... I'll never fortget it.
This solo is the guitar solo to The Enema Bandit, One of many solos, Most of the solos here on this 3 album set are taken from songs that have lyrics you can ask me anything about Zappa Ill know the answer I'm joe I hang out with you a lot keep the Zappa coming I have to see were I can send you a PM
Welll... there are some things to say about this collection of solo's by Zappa... first... it's genius... it's also MOSTLY live tracks....BUT...Zappa went over all of these solos with a fine tooth comb, and while I trust Zappa's choice making in the solos... it should be mentioned that these solos are not untouched... maybe some of them are untouched... but most of them have had entire passages of guitar removed when Zappa would play some bad notes...now...I'm not criticizing this...I'm just mentioning it. Frank would not deny what I was saying... he didn't want the solos to sound bad... so he took out the offending 8 bars here and there . Fair. Also... some tracks... not this one... are guitar solos that are put on top of rythym tracks that had NOTHING to do with the solo...tracks from another show and sometimes... even a DIFFERENT SONG. It's a technique that Zappa invented called Xeno-Chrony. Which was used EXTENSIVELY on this album.
having actually heard numerous edited out sections of his solos, I cannot confirm your *supposition* . he decides to lose some juicy stuff at times in favor of… the sense of the edit, its timing. “so he took out the offending 8 bars…” - is tgat a fact, or is that what you’d do
Treacherous Cretins was actually doubled completely by Steve Vai, IIRC. It almost sounds like harmonizer effect at first but it's really Vai playing a second, identical part that he transcribed.
Zappa called his guitar solos "spontaneous composition" and you would rarely hear the same lick in the solo for the same song every night. Zappa would sometimes orchestrate a classical composition based on a guitar solo... He also called them "air sculptures" because he loved moving some serious air in a hockey arena with his guitar being the loudest thing in the building...
My Son,Frank needed to change up his guitar sound because of Colaiutas drum polyrhytmic phrasing style. The SG was not layered for "sculpting from thin air with chaotic off best drumming",as you gaylee proclaim, with Vinnie's "off the charts" phrasing,so,to compensate,Frank switched to the les Paul with dimarzio pickus,in order to sustain the "sloppy Colai like" chaotic drumming. The two didn't match up,as Frank let him go after just 12 months of touring .Frank was already too chaotic.Shortly after colaiutas very short tenure, Frank changed up again around 81.Difnt need this sound, so let's not toot our horns for SLOPPY COLAI ON DRUMS(this song was an exception but intro is Terry Bozzio). Even Joe's Garage drum sound was fabricated with reverb sampling.Vinnie was a bad fit for Frank. The two chaotic styles began to get tiresome. 12 months of touring is one of the shortest runs of any Zappa drummer.Frank was not happy letting Bozzio go and hiring Colaiuta.

Recorded live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on December 11, 1980 during a performance of the "Illinois Enema Bandit"
An amazing guitar solo. So bad ass!!!
The tone of the Les Paul he is playing around 80-81 is abbsoooluuuute heaven.
Enjoying your Zappa journey. Try listening to Joe's garage from start to the end.

You don't know which instrument to follow. They all have their own presence.
This just brings it so hard right from the get go.
To think that this is over forty years ago and still sounds fresh !
They're all good, but my favorite from the set is Variations On The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression.
🤩one of my favs

Most tracks feature Vinnie Colaiuta on drums.
This was live
Rory Reacts now you might listen to the 3 versions of ( shut up and play yer Guitar )
Think the whole box is live(probleby some cleaning here and there).
Great, thanks!

@Zolar Czakl It was Frank that said XenoChrony was used extensoively on this album... and it's in the liner notes of the cd version of the album.

The band is like a farmer on his tractor steadily cutting the field. And Frank's guitaring is like angry chickens.
