- XCOM 2 War of the Chosen Gameplay is here! This is episode 55 of our Let's Play XCOM 2 War of the Chosen. Work with The Reapers, The Skirmishers, and the Templars to take down the Assassin, the Warlock and the Hunter who represent the Chosen. Thanks to 2k for early access! There are two ways to join the character pool:
1) Leave a comment below with the soldier name/biography info and I will select random comments to be added into the game as needed! Due to the fact that I'm manually creating all characters, I will handle much of the visual look. If you want to leave a defining characteristic I will try to work that in.
2) I setup a Patreon tier here: / christopherodd If you choose to join through Patreon, you will have access to a special discord channel where you can submit a very detailed character build and you will be guaranteed added to the character pool!

Assassin: Surely, you can do better?
"get executed a second later"
Zhao:Omae wa mou shindeiru...
Assassin: *N A N I?*
I'm just imagining the "Nani?!" meme going on in the background as she gets one-shotted
The irony is real
Reapers simply don't take shit from anyone
😂😂😂
*Reaper takes a shot and misses*
Assassin: Surely you can do better!
*Reaper takes another shot and Executes the Assassin*
Reaper: *grin*
I really like the Assassin's character; she actually seems to legitimately respect you and your team, and sees you as a worthy equal. Even her dying words is wishing you well on reclaiming your home. What a badass.
Assassin: surely you can do bette than tha- **gets executed**
Final: yes, yes I can you overgrown black berry popsicle
The race for total kills is getting tight, as multiple soldiers turn in some impressive performances. Meanwhile, Darkwood is inching closer to a sweep of all the top spots besides accuracy, and Drake takes the lead in a bad category.

Wolfeson28 I
Wolfeson28 I love this chart!
Holy shit, I was not expecting her to commit Seppuku. That was...hardcore.
I guess she does still have her sense of honor though.
"May you reclaim this world for your own."
I like the assassin now gdi
i'd recommend using the katana and arashi on separate rangers (katana on your sword/bladestorm guy, arashi on your shotgun guy, etc) to give you TWO powerful units for the price of one chosen
Now that you're done with the Assassin (and effectively 2/3 chosen), I think you should consider taking on the facilities with the Rulers.
Let's be real: the game is getting a bit too easy for you even on the supposed toughest missions. It's probably Xcom 2's only flaw (mid-to-late game becomes almost trivial even on the highest difficulty), and to circumvent that, I think you should challenge yourself by bringing the Rulers into the equation. The Warlock isn't showing up much, and no Hunter or Assassin means you'll be cruising in most missions, which lacks challenge given your skills and the depth of your squad.
Just a suggestion.
Haider Khan I agree. Odd, got should do a playthrough with the beta strike modifier active.
The biggest disappointment for me is that Chosen can't coop or compete with each other, but rather act independently. Imagine a mission where both Hunter and Assassin came, either that their minions will "fight"(more like a standoff, similar to ADVENT VS lost) each other, or they will cooperate, then backstab each other.
On the other hand ... the Assassin caused no end of problems earlier and still wasn't an easy fight, the Hunter less so, but still difficult at that stage of Odd's progress. The victories were earned, not given. I'm curious as to the last one, the Warlock, and what imcreases on the final mission will bring, too.
Well organized, well fought, and it was still a close thing, with the Assassin simply unable to finish, and luckily for us.
Warlock is much more difficult cause he reveals the reapers and has mind control (also in my game he was immune to explosions). If Chris does the same mistake of not taking blue screens (for the sarcophagus) and goes with grenadiers and reapers again - I fear he might loose a soldier or two on the next stronghold mission...

Entry 45
The drop point we used was frighteningly similar to the last assault, dropping through a collapsed roof into a supply room. The room we first pressed into was some kind of MEC repair room, the devices packed into the room. Even after we cleared the room of hostiles, including one very annoyed Berserker with an aversion to psionic energy, it felt like they would jump to life any second. As we examined the room, Final pressed behind us and scouted out an Armory. We pulled back, moving through the room he had scouted before hitting resistance coming from the next room. A few vipers and an Andromedon, nothing too difficult. The Vipers went down easily, and Dragon and I killed the Andromedon, and with a hit from Kestrel we destroyed the wreck. The next room was… i'm not even sure. ADVENT troops were laying on some kind of beds, with pipes of all sorts plugged into them, Maybe it was healing, or maybe brainwashing, I don’t know. Final scouted out what he thought was some sort of comm array, while we pressed into some kind of medical facility. A couple squads pincered Final, getting him caught in the crossfire between a squad of ADVENT and a pack of Chryssalids. But with some explosive cover, Final made it out fine. I even got revenge on one of those MECs for that reaction shot a while back. A stun lancer tried to take me on at close range, but I tought him why that was bad idea. After that, we found the Ascension chamber. It was… eerily identical to the last one.
The ascended chamber was… different. It was much more flat, with significantly more cover. Like this place was built for her especially. It even seemed more golden and Opulent, matching it’s occupant. Deathhound was in it for the hunt, so maybe the Voidblade is in it for the glory? I finally got a chance to use my stun strike as we made our way up to the Sarcophagus. I thought about the problem in the situation moments before my blades hit a purifier, but luckily I missed his tanks. When Dragon closed the distance, the Voidblade teleported out of her sarcophagus. Dragon was the first to suffer damage, when she closed the distance under cover and hit her like a truck. The Stun lancers she teleported in weren’t too much of a problem, until one spotted Final. She likes teleporting so much, so I inverted with her to give Final a clear shot. Final overcharged his rifle again, and burned a hole directly into her forehead. In the downtime,Phenix and Mox started taking shots at the sarcophagus while the Beserker that teleported in and I decided to have words. The Voidblade was able to resurrect before we could fully destroy the sarcophagus, but it was on the verge of going unstable.I was told to get clear before they detonated one of Final’s sticky claymores. Kestrel and I took down the wreck, but she got caught by the Voidblade. In sme sort of last-ditch attempt, ther Voidblade brought in even more Stun lancers. One was easy enough for me to deal with, but I got hit by that psionic wave of hers. I was able to get Mox up, but we all were still recovering when she vanished again. Somebody said they found her, so I tossed down the Mimic beacon to try and distract her. We were a blur as she teleported around every time we hit her, but she was outgunned. With one hit, Mox sent the sarcophagus into meltdown. She almost seemed… happy to find an equal. Dragon went straight up to her, jammed her storm gun into it’s chest, and pulled the trigger. The sarcophagus recalled her, but it couldn’t help anymore. She… congratulated us… then she put her blade through her own chest… It makes me think that she was in it for the honor of it. She wanted to prove that she was worthy of being chosen? I guess it’s a little late to speculate now, but Final grabbed her weapons. He seemed to take satisfaction in pulling that blade out of her chest.
People were celebrating in the Bar when we got back. I didn’t see if 4-20 or outrider were there, but I decided to take a rest. I took part in one of the songs, an old German drinking song my dad used to sing. ButI can’t stop thinking: the chosen had their hunting grounds, but when the DeathHound was killed, the remaining two spread their reach. So with the other two down… i fear the Warlock will be more common…
The scientists have started pulling apart the Voidblade’s weapons, and they already have a guess. They react in a “non-newtonian” fashion, so they obviously use strange-matter. The Shotgun, which has the name “Arashi” meticulously carved into the side, forms a sort of psionic Sabot around the ferroslugs, providing it with excellent range beyond that of even our storm guns, while possessing the same damage pattern. The sword however, which some have come to call “nightshade” or “The Void Blade”, is made up entirely out of Strange-matter. It seems to continuously generate a dense psionic field at a currently unknown type. When in motion, this envelope of psionic force will phase through other metal as if it wasn’t even there, but carves through organic material with little to no resistance. They should make valuable weapons in our fight.
We picked up another soldier for out Psi-ops. Odd seemed to pick this one out personally, but never faced her directly. Her callsign is Momma Bear, and she shows particularly high psionic aptitude.
We just received news that a resistance force stopped an ADVENT delivery passing through a Lost zone, but couldn’t recover the materials. Dragon is going to be the first to take out the Weapons, so this will be devastating..

As cool as these stories are, theres something eerie I noticed about it, Klaus frequently ends up in the infirmary for help with the 'mental toll' he takes in battle, and the facts that it happens so often, I'm starting to think that poor Klaus is mentally unstable. Maybe thats something you could bring up in the next chapter!
Man, Klaus is really getting worked hard these last few missions. Hope he and Frost get a happy ending when this is all over.
Assassin: "Surely you can do be-"
*Executed!*
Reaper: (lifts face from sights)
"Yes. Yes I can."
Mox really need to learn Wrath, Wrath/Retribution/Reckoning/Justice with Ionic ripjack(Tier 2 upgrade) guaranteed stun effect, you could control any enemy except the Chosen for two turns, even Gatekeeper and Sectopod.
Wait, Cris's mum is a soldier?! GO MOMMA BEAR!
I want to see her one shot the Warlock with a frying pan projectile from downtown (the kitchen)
Nero Mystyra the legendary "null pan" from downtown
I was hoping her bio would say something along ; "I found out that one of my sons became a commander of a resistance group called XCOM. I dont know how I feel about this, but one thing for sure - we're going to kick so much alien ass."
"Surely you can do better"
"Okay Bitch you asked for it"
*executed*
Odd, Scorch has FORTRESS! He does not give a rat's smelly hind quarters about Fire, poison and EXPLOSIONS! :D
ADVENT new Asia intelligence node: we've lost contact with one of the chosen strongholds, technicians are working on restoring the dropped communication line. Update: the chosen assassin is dead, killed by resistance forces, suspected collaboration from other major resistance groups. All forces are to maintain yellow alert.
Personal note: Greg was distraught when the confirmation came. Poor guy, he's a creep but a loveable one y'know?
Honorable Sudoku !
An honorabru dispray!
MaddeningFly this comment makes me wanna commit Seppuku
MaddeningFly Sudoku is the puzzle with numbers...
What's up your ass this time?
Her last words almost made me feel sorry for her... almost...
38:25 Its pretty clear you had 4 HP and then you hit for 6 HP on the thing. So Fraxis didnt want you winning on the first go round. You got screwed, but it was set up so you had to have her revive at least once. Its too easy if its on the first go round.
Yeah, the health bar is compressed. I'd prefer they straight up told you but you have to figure that out...
technically it's 2 points per bar on that thing. it actually had 8 left he did 6, 1 bar with 2 health left.
I never ever played XCOM, after watching you play on legend for about 40 episodes i thought, i can do that, i bought the game, played on legend too, what could go wrong? I watched you, i understand this game, i was going to nail it. 3 of my soldiers died in the first freaking mission haha. Love this game
Yeah i got that, i am going to veteran and start a new campaign, i tried it 3 more missions and have about 60 percent wounded haha but i love it, thats how i learn
VforRevenge right? I yell at him for the blatant mistakes he makes yet I can barely scrape through commander difficulty lol
The Gatecrasher mission on Legend is very hard. It even makes Chris nervous. So don't feel too bad. It only gets easier from there.
On my first The Lostmission iforgot Odd has the Between the Eyes card and i don't. That went well haha
Odd... This is probably my favorite series on RUclips and I CAN NOT WAIT for next season already. But you manage to post these right as I am going to bed. I'm losing sleep because I love you so much.
Yeah. i learnt english thanks to ODD's XCOM series :) Now I try to play on my own, it's more for myself as i'm not native. I live in UK for some time already but still have issues with expressing myself. I think playing favourite game with commentary is a kind a good way to improve language skills.
same
Wonder how mom liked it that you put her into the one job that gives her instant white hair.
And than the reaper, with a mind game, misses on purpose... only for the Assassin bring her shin up to reveal an exposed part of her. A reaper took her soul when the moment was right. Not too soon... and surely not too late.
HAHAHA HI MOM!!!! Very cool. Good for her!
Hi Timothy I'm super stoked I made it in!! I'm ready to kick some alien ass! Hopefully Christopher gets me trained up lol!!
Yo waddup mama odd
OMG ODD!!!!! Scorch has fortress! He is immune to explosives
I beat Xcom 2 for the first time on Veteran recently. I am by no means good at the game but I am so glad I discovered such a fun game through this channel. Cheers Odd.
Wow, your mother made an XCom character+bio?! That is so awesome :) You've got an amazing mother Chris!
It's fitting, because mothers seem to have an all-knowing sense of their children, and what they do. Like they're *psychic*.
Love your XCOM series. Just a small tip, if you haven't noticed - mindshields block the daze effect. While this will cost one utility item slot it saves you the trouble of having to revive soldiers. I believe a psy operative with solace also blocks the daze.
I work for a company called DeZURIK and hearing Odd keeping shouting profanities at Dessurik in XCOM makes my day everytime. So long Dessurik.
If you're inspecting a character and you click "make weapons available", the weapons all go back onto the character they were unequipped from when you leave the character screen. So you don't have to worry about unequipping good stuff from your other characters by mistake.
right. only the overscreen pulls them off and keeps them off.
Bradford: Commander Odd, you never told me your mother survived.
Commander Odd: I didn't think she survived.
Remember to give Darkwood a Shredder ability, it'll help a lot. Besides that well played, at least the Assassin turned out to be an alien of honour.
You're gonna like the assassins sword,
It can't miss.....
Central says ‘secret entrance’.
XCOM says ‘giant hole in roof’
YOUR MUM IS IN THE GAME?! LOL! XD That is amazing
17:30 Tears in my eyes, so beautiful Blaster Launcher shoot :) My inner child from 94' couldnt be happier! Blaster Launcher is back, baby :)
If the Assassin obtains 'Return Fire' you'll see a lot more of that shotgun of hers thus nullifying any attempt of Overwatching her if you like your squad to live.
learned that the hard way
MrOdd, so about the need to check health numbers... "Numeric Health Display" is what you are looking for. I think you even said a few episodes ago that you'd want to use it.
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1126938196
Does the "Show Health Values" actually look like it is shown? Because for my taste that looks pretty fugly because of the bars. Which is a shame as they were nicely done in EU/EW.
I prefer More Icons, you can turn off the "loot" indicator if you find it too cheaty. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1127409511 Bottom line, there are a lot of options beyond trying to count microscopic health pips :)
I just wish Odd would pick More Nations mod. I just want my soldier get a chance on the Odd's shenanigans
Well now its late. But Consider getting scanning protocols on sofia instead of battle scanners.
Seeing the support and involvement from family is the best, That has made my day...
that blaster bomb was sexy
also, the chambers seem to be random. pretty sure i had a platform
MAMMA ODD!
ITS MAMMA ODD MORTY!
LOOK MORTY MAMMA ODD!
And best mom award goes to-!!! Srsly you have the coolest mom ever that was funny!
A tip for when you go against the Warlock. Get your psi operative the Solace ability as soon as possible if you haven't already. The dispelling aura from solace will make your troops (within the PsiOps bubble) immune from the Warlock's mindscorch (a chain lighting style daze attack - about a 5 tile jump between units, though I recently saw it jump a 9+ in recent mission). If you do get multiple units hit with the Warlocks daze attack, running in the PsiOp will auto dispell the daze plus the usual disorient that accompanies the revival. In one movement you can get 4+ people up at once to full strength. I haven't tested it with the Assassin's harbor wave, but I'm confident it would work on that as well.
55:10 Love the Hari Kari at the end.
Interesting that an alien assassin would use a human tradition such as seppuku when killing itself.
Echo TheEcho its explained that they were in fact humans before.
Timothy Barth Even those main 3? Huh, didn't know that.
Echo TheEcho it's lore that besides sectoids (which is the true nature of the aliens i think) all other organic classes have originated from meddling with human dna. The chosen are just better lab results. Selected among the others (should i say chosen?) for their unusual strenght.
Least thats what i gathered from all the playthroughs i watched.
christopherodd take my advice for Klaus. buy arc wave since it works in conjunction with rend, and his last ranked abilities. trust me, Klaus will become a beast.
You forgot about Klaus's Fortress. Again.
And about Mox's Interrupt and Battlelord.
Lmao codename for the assassin weapons is Hanzo
New Ability: Scatter Shot
Use the power of bullshit RNG to eliminate any enemy in your line of sight.
Hanzo is someone from history, moron.
Laitinen got 30 spare APs. Pretty much any free skill
My god that blaster bomb + claymore combo. Though it is Chrysalids. I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
i read somewhere and tested it myself in game, in WOTC, you can remove burning debuff by hunkering down. Useful in early campaign, when you have only one charge of medkit, or no medkit at all for that matter.
good job !we finally got that bitch ! a good tip for you . dragon rounds is uesful against chosen so they can not use some of their power.
I know right! She's so annoying to listen to!
Unsure if anyone noticed, but at 30:17 you can actually see the outline of where the assassin is sitting while invisible after she jumps in. It looks like some kind of glitch from the pillar on the left covering her position. Amusing.
That is really cool that your mom added a soldier.
Reasons we need the numerical hp mod:
shit like 38:26
That claymore+blaster bomb combo had to have been the singular most epic mass murder in XCOM history
"It is only 2 of them? We can take this"
*4 units + 4 Crysalids appear*
Holy shit!
"Frick!" obviously refers to the Major League Baseball Commissioner in the 1950s, Ford Frick. Christopher must be a baseball fan for him to use it so often. Maybe it gives him good luck.
Now you better take care that Mom doesn't get killed, or there'll be hell to pay! ;)
"Was" hardcore. And that blaster bomb was amazing... made my day.
I said "noooooo" in sync with Odd! :-)
so, inmthis chapter we learned an important lesson, yo simple do NOT talk shit to a Reaper, much less one like zhao with banish and a superior expanded mag and 5% chance of execution.
my favorite cards were the one that made me pick up the monthly loot immidiatly, the one that gave me a resistance soldier almost every mission and the one were i get 1 Advent Traitor in my squad. those extra help were on chances but they showed up alot of times.
One health point remaining seems to be a common random result built into the combat results table. They don’t want it to be too easy.
Either a Battle Scanner or Scanning Protocol on Specialists can reveal the Assassin.
Great win, great new(then) weapons, Christopher! Impressive.
Welcome Mommabear!
in this room, the scanning protocol on specialist is divine, it scans the whole room and reveal the assassin. Basically, it offers you a full turn of DPS on her.
1:02:15 Ah. Good old nepotism. That is actually really funny and cool.
So he never realized that the wraith suit is an upgrade for the spider suit but he knew the war suit was for the exo suit?
Shen: Commander, the Shadow Chamber is up and running. All we have do now is put it to use
Commander Odd: *hands Shen orders to research the blacksite vial* I just did
Love the new logo ♥
Next is Warlock. Mr. Odd, I recommend Psi operative with solace ability. He will made almost all of Warlock's ability become useless. But there always the other choice so have fun with your own pace.
I think a Mox quote would be great for the end of mission photo.
Should change Willy's nickname to The Hound because he has a Fear of Fire XD
do you know why his nickname is willy? because i do he is actually based of the king of the netherlands, king willem-alexander van oranje, so his nickname being willy suits him way more.
I was just making a Game of Thrones reference that's all. There's a character in that show called The Hound that is afraid of fire.
So, I know it's been awhile and I'm not expecting much in the way of replies, but out of all the Chosen, I think the assassin would be the best to take command of the world in the circumstance XCOM lost, having just the right balance of respect for the elders, respect for humanity, and honour at the same time
Odd and his squad of ultimate badasses VS the Assassin? *Grabs popcorn and soda* Lets do this!
Darkwood could have shredded her armor several times over.
Why did the chicken cross the road ? To get to mox's fusion ripjack
You could see the assassin's cloaked position at the start when the pillar covered her rendering position. Battle Scanner not necessary, but a rendering defect the developers should address.
15:16 Good thing you noticed that other room. I had the same exact layout on my Hunter mission, and that pod ended up sneaking up on me and flanking me. It would have been a disaster if it wasn't for my Reaper.
i was fighting the assassin the other day in a tunnels mission and I dropped a claymore on the ground. When she appeared she spawned right on top of it, so the next turn I blew up the claymore, which blew out the wall and exposed her to my entire team.
Please be sure to not select "Integrated DLC" when you start your next campaign. All it does is turn off the two story missions and make you pay for the stuff you would otherwise get for free from those missions.
So the purpose of stun strike is not to stun but to knock an enemy out of cover. that's pretty neat!
Also, about Mox and his ability to take an action instead of overwatch. if he were to shoot does that count as an overwatch shot as Mox has to let the enemy move first?
42:23 , stun lancer, " Donuts!"
The assassin got her ass squarely kicked, and eventually stuffed and mounted alongside her first brother in the xcom trophy room.
That was a cool video.. go mama bear! :)
the assassin end her own life with samurai style, like a true swordsman
MommaBear. The hype is real.
Go get'em, MommaBear! (loud cheers)
That blaster bomb tho
43:28
You could just let Mox Reckoning Stun Lancer and justice to stun the other one, then you could just deal with the Assassin.
And you know when Mox has two action point, Reckoning is a dash distant attack just cost one action, that is big different.
Was waiting for this ! thanks
Her reign of terror has come to an end! Nice job bringing her down, especially since you only had a single minor weakness to exploit. Two down, one to go.
Anyone else noticed that Dessurik didnt finished her Harakiri? She had to turn her blade up next and pull it up (as Close to her heart as posible) and she should have fallen backwards not forward (originally to get beheaded by someone with a sword standing behind her).
Stun Strike is such a misleading name for the Templar ability. Really gotta read the description. However it is a nice alternative to a Grenadier's Demolition ability and explosives. Knock em away from cover, shoot the now out in the open enemy.
You should carry the blaster launcher on another soldier to finish with Rahjin's Reaper. .... 😅
The Blaster bomb was really beautiful.
I am loving this series, fantastic gameplay and commentary.
I am guessing we will be getting some sort of XCOM 2 "Long war of the chosen" in the future?
Wanted to update the character a bit.
Name: James “Spectre” Arkane
Nationality: American
Age:31
Class: Any class is fine
Skin color: brown
Bio: Born and raised in San Francisco, James had always hoped as a kid and much into his adulthood that if or when aliens came to visit our world that we'd have much to learn and share with them. They did come...and what they brought devastated mankind.
From then on James wanted nothing more than to rid his planet of these alien Interlopers. He joined a resistance faction where he made a name for himself and caught the attention of ADVENT as well.
And attack on his faction would see him captured and taken to an ADVENT prison. Having heard what goes on in these places it looked very grim for James.
Before anything unfortunate could happen to him, a group of unknown soldiers infiltrated the facility and lay waste to the ADVENT within. James would later come to know these unknown soldiers as XCOM and that their reason for being there, was him.
