I am American and after being in South Africa for the first time I knew little about these great people. Afrikaners are now my favorite people and I hope to God they can stay a great people.

Check out this interesting episode in South African history that might clear up your view.
In the beginning Afrikaners only settled in the Cape Town area. But when the English took over, a lot of Afrikaners left their farms to move on, because they didn't want to live under English rule. After a long and hard journey they met with Zulu tribes. They helped the Zulus to get back some catle that was stolen from them by robbers (African style as they were always used to). After that, they started negotiations about bying and renting land, because the Afrikaners just wanted to start farming again.
Please check out the history files to find out what happend then. Maybe you can us words like "Dingaan" or "Piet Retief" in your research.

I've seen your comments defending the Afrikaner people, and being one myself, I have to say I respect you and what you are doing, I can see that you are very educated on what happened to the European settlers in South Africa. Most people just don't understand us and where we come from, what we've been through and our culture in general. Most people believe what you described very well as "propaganda" because if you think about it, that's all it is. It's just a bunch of uneducated bullshit.
I have to say, for someone who's not from South Africa or possibly never been there, you are more educated than the massive majority of South Africans themselves, including me. For that you really do have my full respect.

You are right, I never was in South Africa. Never managed to get further than Zambia. The horrorstories about SA never gave me any desire to visit the country. And with the ANC and EFF, I don't see a very bright future for SA. And that is a pitty. There were a lot goodhearted people involved in building SA up, it took ages, let's hope something remain of that. If the Zulu/Xhosa/Eswatini/Setswana communities want their own schools the government has the deepest of pockets for funding for those schools; however if Afrikaner people want schools exclusively for their community they are immediately labelled racist and the government acts like it has vipers in their pockets

Sooo hard to comment on. I have spent time in South Africa and found the Afrikaaners to be warm and hospitable people. Still a lot of resentment against the British over land grabs in South Africa and the resulting wars. Think it is too far in past to hold resentment for English people today (who probably would not be able to tell you what a Boer was let alone the war dates) but as someone who has studied the history, they have a point. I loathed Apartheid and the atrocities carried out in its name as do the many Afrikaaners I have met. Even the gentlest of them are racist though. They told me that if I was brought up there I would be too. Very complicated situation but happy memories of these people. They are not the monsters many make them out to be though proud of their culture. That was the reason that was given to me when I was in Vryheid Natal. I asked why there were two schools: Brit medium and Afrikaans medium when both communities (at least in that area) aimed to be bilingual.

Please remember people living in Orania and people like them are a small minority of Afrikaners. Most Afrikaners live in normal cities and towns and attend public or private schools with the rest of the population.

Reading these comments saddens me. Why can't people just get on? I don't get it. We're all people, and we are not born racist. Treat others how you want to be treated; black, white, purple, whatever - we are all the same, just with different life experiences. I hope South Africa and all the cultures there learn to put aside their differences; so much innocent blood is lost for no reason except different levels of melanin!

Crispercrayon9 Treat a white community the same way a black community is, and they will turn out the same. Give a black man equal opportunities with the white, and they will turn out the same. Obviously some cultural differences, but I am from New Zealand where we have many cultures that in my generation generally get along - some of my friends are Tongan, Samoan, Maori, Afrikaners, Dutch, black South African, various Asians, and more. They are all the same, just with different life experiences. All just people who, given the right circumstances, can all become valuable members of society.

I am not a South African but I lived there from a very young age and personal circumstances, rightly or otherwise gave me a chance to explore the wider world. I experienced the old and the new SA as I kept on going back until 3 years ago. The old SA had many things right but the biggest wrong was the so called 'apartheid' system which was misunderstood. The new SA has many things wrong and very few things right. The old SA was used by the West to stop the onslaught of so called communism. It's borders on all sides were used by Eastern Bloc/Russian trained 'freedom fighters to infiltrate the country and to cause problems. The Americans [CIA] provided SA with intelligence on positions/situations for example in Angola which was used to fight the FNLA/MPLA and Cuban forces on the SWA border. I know this because I was there. We were in contact with so called 'weather planes' [USA] on a number of occasions and they provided positions only to disappear after short bursts of communications. I suspect that we were only getting bits and pieces and that the info was being controlled and acted upon at a much higher level. But SA was also inn a corner. Generally in most Asian, and African nations, traditionally the upper classes never give any chance or opportunity to the lower classes to get educated, wear in better dressing standards, have ideas about social equality, and never the chance to learn English.
