This is a really good evaluation of the puck screen. You answered all my questions and more. Also the video quality is excellent, pro level. Great job.
Nice intelligent eval! I always use a screen, for the reasons you outlined. I have the ec680 which gives a few drips post pull so a small bowl replaces the cup to catch drips. A light tap of pf releases screen into bowl prior to knocking puck. Fingers stay unburnt, screen ready for a rinse and another shot! Thanks again for a great vid!
I always screen my shots. It just comes out cleaner, i think it gives a better distributed pre infusion. And they knock out so much cleaner. My experience at least. I enjoy the screens and will continue to use them for my espresso.
I agree particularly on the cleanliness part. From an extraction point of view, I’ve tested it with a double blind experiment and found no difference in taste, however. It also increases pressure from the group.
My 1st epresso machine was a Braun where tamping was not required. Tamping was done by the machine shower head and that the portafilter would "click" when truned to the right and stop when shower head was properly set on the portafilter. I noticed this too with Breville Barista Express that when "loose", that is, portafilter goes all the way to the right, it tends to have "channeling". What i do when this happens, I add a gram or two(2) such that the portafilter goes only all the way to the center. This leads to better extraction times. BTW, i ditch my "Puck" screen entirely.
I have used a puck screen with my Breville for a few months. I don’t know if my coffee tastes any better but the puck goes cleanly into my knock box leaving no residue in the portofilter or on the shower screen. And it adds another fun and possibly unnecessary step to my daily routine.
Get a drawer knock box and an extra screen for convenience. I'm using the flair 58 screen with a 20g ims nanotech basket. Puck's sliding out effortlessly.
I now knock mine onto a bar mat first, then just pick up the puck to throw into the box, leaving the screen on the mat. Works just fine as well, especially with consecutive pucks.
nice video, what type of grinder size do you recommend it for Peet Coffee French dark roasted keep it in mind that's have more oil that another coffee bean, thank you..
I’d buy it just to keep the shower screen clean. The knocking it out of the filter part I guess I’d have to use a needle or something to gently lift it out. Great video. My main issue with e61 is the maintenance… after doing back flushes with detergent it degreases the lubricant of the moving parts inside the group… So this is a balance to not use too much detergent 😂… I mean I’d rather do more often back flush after every shot with detergent so that it’s cleaner for a longer time and then when I use detergent I’ll use less just to keep the “natural lubricant “ from the coffee oils doing their magic and keeping the leaver from jamming… squeaking. I’ve had mine for over a year now and this the only downside to my machine. Nice video Keep up the good work
Totally agree with all your points. A couple of months since this vid, I've started using the puck screen daily after getting a tip from another subscriber to just knock the puck on the counter surface rather than the knock box.
Nice video. Just my 2 cents. You could improve your distribution. That OCD type of device only spreads the top of the coffee. WDT has made a massive difference for me. But the screen has made a difference for you.
Hi Tahir, I do agree a clump removal tool will help, I usually do so but for the purpose of this video, it'll add too much of a variable to the comparison, hence I didn't opt for one.
Hi, I just bought it myself from a store locally (link in desc), however, I'm sure the file is quite public as I've seen the same item for sale on etsy and ebay as well. Good luck.
Frankly, I doubt they're that precise in terms of microns. I'd go with the 100 as a start. I don't think it matters as much especially for a relative inconsistent appliance-grade machine
I knock the puck on the rubber mat (what do people call that? barista mat?) then pick the puck off and into the knock box. so now I call my barista mat, the knock mat. knock box's new name is coffee puck collecting thingy.
I like the screen if only for the fact it keeps ALL the grounds off the group head gasket and screen. I just make a quick swipe with light weight bristle brush to make sure.
Hi, I try another experiment , I put the puck screen under the coffee (the bottom of basket) and the extraction going faster. May be the pressing has some change? Or any reasons? Thanks to tell me
Hello, you mean the extraction spout starts spitting the coffee? If you remove the puck screen without any other changes what’s happening with the extraction?
i have the same problem. using the puck screen, i see spurts and channeling. and my pucks are soggy compare to not using them. i’m new to the espresso game too.. what am i doing wrong?
It doesn't help that much for our deep baskets and imbalanced water dispersement, but it does reduce it. Channeling is very evident for courser grind settings or low absorbsion bean types as well.
I see. Many variables, unfortunately and usually the grind is the primary culprit, then the tamp/basket stability pre extraction. Both of which the screen won’t make much of a difference
Sorry, but you should invest in a better microphone, it's really horrible to listen like this. But your video and your content very informative and useful.
this video basically tell you, how to make good coffee ? u need to buy all equipment and forget about taste, PRIDE and proud of equipment is much important.
This is a really good evaluation of the puck screen. You answered all my questions and more. Also the video quality is excellent, pro level. Great job.
much appreciated mate
Add coffee to porta filter,tap/shake slightly, wdt with small tool, wedge tamp/distributor then tamp add screen, best shot ever.

Great tips! Just uploaded a similar video yesterday as well for a newer screen version.
Excellent analysis and demonstration. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I love my BPlus. Overpriced for a screen but I got it as gift so I'm loving it. It keeps my shower screen very clean.
It does feel great not having grinds on the screen, doesn't it? 😊

Agreed, for home use, having a routine makes it more fun
You're funny. So worth my subscription 😂
😁😁

Thanks for dropping by. Frankly, I'm not very well versed with grinders nor dark roasts, so I don't want to lead you the wrong path.
I’d buy it just to keep the shower screen clean.

I use it to keep head clean and wdt great combination
Yeah, after a couple of months, I appreciate the screen-filter result more than anything.
Hey love the video and loved the 3d printed dosing cup any chance u are selling or sharing the stl ? :)
Hi, I just bought it myself from a store locally (link in desc), however, I'm sure the file is quite public as I've seen the same item for sale on etsy and ebay as well. Good luck.
Hi, I have a quick question.
I noticed that for 54.5mm puck screen, there are different hole sizes, which is 50, 100 and 150um. Which one to order?
Frankly, I doubt they're that precise in terms of microns. I'd go with the 100 as a start. I don't think it matters as much especially for a relative inconsistent appliance-grade machine
I knock the puck on the rubber mat (what do people call that? barista mat?) then pick the puck off and into the knock box. so now I call my barista mat, the knock mat. knock box's new name is coffee puck collecting thingy.
Sounds like a good routine!
I like the screen if only for the fact it keeps ALL the grounds off the group head gasket and screen. I just make a quick swipe with light weight bristle brush to make sure.
Agreed, after a few months and the suggestions of viewers to tap the puck onto a surface or anywhere not into the knock box makes the workflow easy.
I think you should be able to use the magnetic side of your dosing funnel to take the screen out with less mess right?
That's a great idea, Arthur!!! 😀
I tried, unfortunately, the screen is probably aluminium and not magnetic 😔
Hi, I try another experiment , I put the puck screen under the coffee (the bottom of basket) and the extraction going faster. May be the pressing has some change? Or any reasons? Thanks to tell me
That's a good idea. I'll do an experiment and get back to you
Another issue for me was maybe 10% of the time my puck would stick to the brew head…. I guess this should solve that issue
Yes it would 👌
Mine started spitting, AFTER I put the puck screen on. I am pretty new to espresso machine though so I am probably doing lots of things incorrectly.
I had channeling when I use puck screen, still trying to figure out how to prevent that
It doesn't help that much for our deep baskets and imbalanced water dispersement, but it does reduce it. Channeling is very evident for courser grind settings or low absorbsion bean types as well.
@@overheadrecipes I m using a VST ridgeless basket, is that what you mean by deep basket?
Mainly 54mm vs the standard E61 58mm portafilter.
@@overheadrecipes yea I'm using a 58mm one for my lelit bianca
I see. Many variables, unfortunately and usually the grind is the primary culprit, then the tamp/basket stability pre extraction. Both of which the screen won’t make much of a difference
I just order one for my Solis Barista Prefecta
Let us know how it works out for your routine 👍
Agree no change in taste but keeps things clean and I find my pucks are drier than without
For sure. That part, I really appreciated, and if I know I'm only making one pull, I'll probably use it for fun. :D
Thanks for dropping by! :D
Sorry, but you should invest in a better microphone, it's really horrible to listen like this. But your video and your content very informative and useful.
Yeah, a very common feedback on almost all my vids hehe. No worries, sorted that out recently. thanks again!
Show the puck from the top
this video basically tell you, how to make good coffee ? u need to buy all equipment and forget about taste, PRIDE and proud of equipment is much important.
I think you missed the context of the video, which is highlighted on the title... We're only exploring whether a puck screen is a necessary accessory.
