Geddy and Alex did get to the know the string section quite well - there are a few nice photos of them out for drinks and dinner (Howard too) and some interviews mention that the band didn't act famous and made sure they were well taken care of - even down to seeing an audiologist for custom earphones to protect their ears during the show. The cellist said most famous people she's worked with don't even bother to learn the musicians' names, yet on the first day she noticed Alex knew everyone's name. They stayed friends with some of them - Jonathan Dinklage (violinist, brother of Peter Dinklage) played on the Envy of None album.
Just FYI, the person Geddy is talking about to the member of the strings section is Canadian actress Alison Pill. She's been in tons of movies including Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Midnight in Paris, Goon, Snowpiercer and Vice, as well as many TV shows. She was engaged for a time to Jay Baruchel (also Canadian), who was in the Clockwork Angels short film The Watchmaker playing the Tax Man.
I know the vocals aren't as good as before, but how many famous rock singers still have a great voice after 40+ yrs on the road,I don't think there can be many,I saw this in the uk & overall he held up pretty good,it certainly didn't detract from what a great show it still was.
It's just a sound check and......they sound effing amazing. At this stage of their careers Geddy needed at least 3-5 days to recover from the strain it put on him doing the live concerts. Nice shout out to Alison Pill (another great Canadian actress). My advice for this concert, just enjoy it Justin, don't worry about Geddy's voice, he will do just fine.
I loved this sound check. It was fun to see Geddy saving his voice. The full version is on the cd’s. On this tour in Cincinnati o was fortunate to be in the arena when they did the soundcheck. They played subdivisions , clockwork angels and red sector a. And Geddy didn’t hold back. He sounded great!
Wow. You're gonna go right into the live one? Cool! It was a great concert. They pulled out some favorites I honestly never thought I'd hear in concert again (my jaw was literally dropped). It was the first time I took my new partner to a Rush concert, so it was a fun experience.
Love this record! the live Caravan, Manhatten and with strings were absolutely fantastic, but the Dreamline was incredible. and of course Halo Effect with that extra oomph, love it! but... YYZ with strings....omfg YYZ.👂👂
Saw an interview with Geddy where he talked about the effort made on the last few tours to help "preserve" his voice. On the last two tours at least he said they never scheduled shows on consecutive nights (which was a common practice in their early days) and on the days with no shows he wasn't supposed to talk at all -- just rest his voice. Journey has been going through something similar. Steve Perry's parts are ridiculously high, and for whatever reason Journey doesn't want to play any of their songs in a lower key. So in the documentary "Everyman's Journey" their manager at the time talked about how difficult it was to space out the shows far enough for the current singer to recover, but still play enough shows in a week to cover the costs of the operation (he said there had to be at least four shows in a week, which means you can't always have a night off between every show).
Great video! After the Clockwork Angels Tour and the R40 Live Tour, can you react RUSH Live on June 28th 1997 at Molson Centre? The Complete Show LIVE Video is available on RUclips. The DVD is called "Echoes of Old Applause".
Keep it coming brother, I need all of this I can get, never having seen them in concert. Unforgivable. This sort of stuff is very cool and of course interesting.
Can't do much about age and the voice going, especially HIS voice and vocals. I mean, it's either call it quits after 30th anniversary or S&A , or just try to adapt and do the best you can. I'm not crazy about his having to go to what one fan once remarked as "that yodeling thing", but we still got to see the best band play 40+ years. I'll take it!
I love strings as well, (is Piano a stringed instrument? it technically is but falls under percussion as it uses a hammer to strike but love piano) so this concert was wonderful for me!
I must admit that I’m a bit sick of hearing this stuff about Geddy’s voice. He’s the same age as me and I think his voice is fine in this concert. Of course he can’t sing as high as easily as he did in his 20s and 30s but he’s still good.
After years upon years of seeing Rush live I found the string section intrusive, I also thought some of the songs they played on lost some of the depth that the band got using triggers and samples, just my opinion and sadly we didn't get to see R40 in the UK.
Serious question. Not sure if they had live auto tune back then, but I know a lot of artists Use it now. That’s how many artists now sound great live. If available, do you think Geddy should’ve used it?
Sure. They probably should have triggered their entire show. Just sit back in lazboys with a tv remote that triggers all their parts. No I don't think that would've been good for business for them.
@@JustinPanariello I knew you would be “ triggered” by that question🤣. The only reason I brought it up is because I watch a reactor called wings of Pegasus. The reality of it is that a majority of artists now use auto tune during their live performances. They are even going back and “fixing“past recorded performances. Most people are unaware of this. I’m personally against it myself.
When you are playing live, do you have a person or people running sound and levels or were you responsible for adjusting levels yourself? I know sound checks in an empty stadium will obviously sound different than when it full. Was that something you had to worry about or was it someone else’s problem?
This isn't the whole soundcheck. They did perform all of Limelight (you can find it on the StickHits RUclips channel), and they would usually perform at least a couple other songs to test out all the different instruments/configurations (you can see Alex's keyboard for The Garden), and then finish with the opening song (in this case, Subdivisions) so everything was dialed in for the show.
I dont know for sure, but they may have had their own individual buses. Also back then was different than now, if you catch me. But yeah the crew.. they sick, then they sick 🤷♂️
Some voices last others don't Geddy at 60 struggled Which is not surprising really. Adding strings where they wouldn't normally be didn't interest me at all, trying to get their money's worth me thinks
Yeah, I agree the whole voice thing is really getting annoying and blown totally out of proportion. Dare I say ALMOST acting like the MSM piling on Trump at every opportunity possible. My defense, you be the judge(and the jury)but YOU MY FRIEND have NEVER seen them live, AND the quality of the RUclips footage is and can be A LOT worse than it really was. I’ve seen them 16 times from 1984-2015, and THE ONLY show that was kind of a let down(was still great)but there was both sound/acoustics/vocal issues for a good part of the performance. Mostly, I think from the venue AND Geddy and the band and crew were all battling sickness that just kept circling through them for the loonnngggg grueling HYF tour of 87-88, and that was my third time seeing them. Geddy sounded like Daffy Duck, Alex’s guitar kept getting lost in the mix, and the bass and drums were thundering loud OVER voice, synth, guitar and his vocals. Every time I saw them after that his voice was nearly spot on, and in the later years of 2010-2015, they never played multiple dates back to back and Geddy made a concerted effort to not Speak in between show to save it P.S. I had to
@@JustinPanarielloI wanted to add that I’ve been watching my Clockwork Angels and S&A Blu-ray’s recently and you’ll never get a RUclips video or streaming service that will match the quality of a Blu-ray disc played through high end A/V equipment. Now, THAT ALONE won’t matter if a singers voice is truly shot and recorded in that state, but when it’s just NOT what it used to be, and not represented properly, it will make quite a difference. The HUGE difference in dynamic range is incomparable. YT is great for content, hard copy media is the best quality(usually)🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤

I understand your pain re: Geddy's voice. I mean, just over the past year or two, your voice has completely crapped out.

I thought it was cool hearing this song without all the vocals. I had also forgotten about Audrey(?) I think, the cute violinist. lol
Checking One Two, Checking….Simbalance One Two, Simbalance.😂
This is the low point of Geddy's vocals. R40 is a slight improvement.

That was a pretty short sound check. I guess they were very tired of touring by the time they did this filming and it was already dialed in enough?

right, the guitar solo is not there.🤘🎸🤘@@basketcasedrummer
@@basketcasedrummer Ah, ok... Just seemed like they were really not into a full performance.
So I was wondering if you get sick do you get left behind. I mean you can't go on the bus with a bunch of people.

@@JustinPanariello talking about the crew. Which means everyone.
Half of Lyle Lovett’s band and some crew members got sick in the middle of a tour last year and I believe they stayed behind to recover.
@sethcashman1011 I wonder how you catch up. And also what if you are the only one doing lightning. Who backs you up.
